The actual consumption of the Ford Explorer is 249 hp. Ford Explorer - technical specifications, fuel consumption. Real fuel consumption figures based on reviews from Ford Explorer drivers

At that time, I was driving a 2011 Kia Sportage, which was also purchased new at a car dealership. I drove it a little over 60 thousand. The car turned out to be very reliable, only the ignition coil flew off the whole time, I bought it for 1200 rubles, they changed it at the dealer for free. (I had to wait 30 days for the warranty, I gave up and bought it with my own money). In general, everything is good, but there’s just no space in it, even the stroller doesn’t fit in the trunk. And another thing I forgave her was the weak rear springs; put 100 kilograms in the trunk, and she starts rubbing the mudguards on the asphalt. And since my wife was carrying a third child, it was time to change to a larger car, preferably with 7 seats.

One rainy December evening, driving past a Ford car dealership, I saw activity inside the salon that was unusual for 10 pm. Curiosity and a craving for freebies made me stop and go see what was happening there. And it was the so-called “sale night”, at which time you could buy a car at a significant discount. Since I liked the Ford Explorer, and at that time I was choosing between it and the Tahoe (Ford - from 2 million, Tahoe from 2.3), I decided to ask the price. After an hour-long conversation with the manager and subsequently with the manager, I received a discount on the car of more than 400 thousand. So for the equipment listed above, instead of 2.1 million, I booked the car for 1,713,000 rubles. Not bad huh? By the way, they asked for 30 thousand for the reservation, and since I ended up there completely by accident and didn’t have that kind of money in me, they booked the car for only 3,000 rubles. I thought for a couple more days, 3000 is not that much money, I could have lost it. But after family council, it was decided to take it. Additionally, I installed bi-xenon with washers, bought studded wheels and floor mats. By the way, the comprehensive insurance cost only 62,000 rubles. I think it's acceptable for a car of this price. And the exploitation began. I drove a little over 35,000 km on it. During this time nothing broke.

The car is packed to the brim with electronics, monitors everywhere, even in the dashboard, good sound, a buffer in the trunk. Ventilated seats, heated steering wheel. By the way, it’s not clear that there is even electric adjustment of the pedal assembly and the steering wheel is mechanical. There is everything, but the engine starts not with a button, but with a key. There's even automatic valet parking, but no rain sensor. There is an electric trunk but no navigation. We don't understand these Americans.

The car behaves well on the road, takes turns well, and goes along the highway smoothly and comfortably. I didn’t really try it off-road, but I went to places where I needed to, but the low front bumper skirt limits the car’s capabilities. I was pleased with the gasoline consumption, the average consumption over the entire period was 15.4 liters, mostly highway/city - 50/50. My family and I went to the seaside in Gelendzhik. So I drove there slowly, the consumption was about 12 liters, I was in a hurry back, the consumption increased to 13.4 liters. I was ready for more expense, I liked it. However, I couldn’t understand why it doesn’t have nearly 300 horsepower. It feels like there's at most 250 horsepower there. Or is it just because of the size of the car!

I have done 2 maintenances over the entire period, at 15 and 30 thousand. The cost of each is about 13,000 rubles.

With a mileage of approximately 25 thousand, I began to feel slight knocking in the front suspension when driving over small irregularities. I went to the dealer and they diagnosed it all day. They say they hear knocks, but there are no problems with the car. Allegedly these are operational knocks, nonsense. I went to another dealer, same thing. They say this is the case for everyone and even new Explorers. I gave up on it and drove like this.

And the car pleased me with its versatility, size, and technical equipment. But life decreed otherwise. I had to sell in August. The question of buying a home arose, but the impending crisis made its own adjustments. I wanted to buy an apartment without a mortgage and without debt. Therefore, the only decision was made to take money from the car. The housing issue is more important. I sold the car quite quickly, as the buyer said, the smell of a new car still remained.

Now I walk, fortunately the car has nothing to do with earning money. I'm thinking of buying something by spring. Priced up to a million and probably used. New cars have now become very expensive due to exchange rates.

Immediately after the release of the first model of the Ford Explorer in 1990, the SUV took a leading position within its market segment in the United States; it fully corresponded to the American style and the American idea of a reliable and good car. But what was the fuel consumption of the Ford Explorer?

In 2011, the current fifth generation of the Ford Explorer was launched. Starting next year, assembly of the famous SUV began to take place at the corporation’s Russian plant in Yelabuga. Car production continues in the current 2019.

The new Ford Explorer 2019 stands out noticeably with its exterior: a powerful chrome grille, black A-pillars that create the effect of a suspended roof, and a protective plastic body kit. The aggressive design, which sharply emphasizes the power and strength of the SUV, also has elegant elements that lighten the heavy and massive exterior. The manufacturer gives a rather appropriate and successful assessment of his brainchild, declaring that it combines premium European style with unique American charisma.

The spacious and roomy interior of the 2019 Ford Explorer is designed for 7 people. The developers managed to achieve high levels of ergonomics, comfort and interior aesthetics. The Ford Explorer model has excellent noise insulation, in terms of which the car leaves behind not only competitors in its class, but is also not inferior to its more expensive “brothers”. To make it easier to drive and stay in the car during long trips and travel, the Ford Explorer is equipped with an amazing amount of electronic equipment. All control, monitoring and safety systems inspire real confidence and peace of mind on the road.

The manufacturer, experts, as well as user reviews note the excellent performance of the SUV, the model’s excellent handling and excellent driving performance.

Engine characteristics

For the Russian market, the Ford Explorer is equipped with two powertrain options:

  • the basic package includes a modern, economical Cyclone 3.5-V6 engine;
  • The top-end Ford ExplorerSport variation is equipped with an EcoBoost 3.5-V6 turbocharged engine with increased power.

The first Ford Explorer, according to the characteristics of the developers, in combination with a six-speed automatic transmission shows excellent results in the field of fuel economy. The main advantage of the new engine is said to be reduced fuel consumption, taking into account the power of the unit. So, company representatives promise that with a power of 249 hp. With. such an engine consumes only 8.8 liters of gasoline per 100 km. Such indicators were achieved by adjusting the valve timing, which allows you to control the operation of the engine with high precision, balancing at the intersection of power and economy.

EcoBoost 3.5-V6 is equipped with a direct fuel injection system and also has double turbocharging. With a volume of 3.5 liters, the engine is capable of reaching a power of 345 hp. With. and torque of 485 Nm. These characteristics make it the most impressive V6 engine in its class. And even for this “strongman”, the manufacturer does not miss the opportunity to use such a characteristic as economical fuel consumption. It seems that we are talking about relative indicators.

Claimed fuel consumption of Ford Explorer

So, the Ford Explorer has two powerful engines, which the manufacturer describes as economical. According to official company sources, Ford Explorer fuel consumption is determined by the following indicators:

— Cyclone 3.5-V6 has a fuel consumption per 100 km in the urban driving cycle of 14.9 liters, in the “highway” mode – 8.8 liters, and in the combined cycle – 11 liters of fuel;

— the more powerful EcoBoost 3.5-V6 consumes 17.3 liters in the city for the same 100 km, 9.4 liters outside the city and 12.3 liters in mixed driving mode.

In principle, for such declared power the consumption is quite tolerable. But do the real indicators correspond to those indicated by the Ford Explorer manufacturer?

Real fuel consumption figures based on reviews from Ford Explorer drivers

Real fuel consumption can only be determined by constant use of the Ford Explorer. The car needs to run in and get used to it. All its systems must “get used” to the driving style and constant loads. Then fuel consumption will stabilize and it can be more or less accurately determined based on real practical observations. After all, it is obvious that it is not determined by calculated figures, but by the number of real gas stations to travel at least real kilometers.

For any model of any car, regardless of manufacturer, assembly, class, the real fuel costs always differ from those indicated in the specifications and technical documentation. And as a rule, in the direction of increase.

The most reliable source for determining the real fuel consumption of a Ford Explorer can be considered a set of data that contains reviews from real users. The fact is that fuel costs for each specific car can also be different. They depend on the driving mode, driving style, quality of gasoline, weather conditions and the number of included electrical appliances, which are presented in abundance in the 2019 Ford Explorer.

By the way, you should not take into account the data obtained during test drives, since they usually use new cars that have not yet been sufficiently run-in. Therefore, the on-board computer can show, to put it mildly, a strange level of gasoline consumption, for example, 25 or 40 liters per 100 km.

Thus, a more or less objective picture can be compiled by calculating average indicators. Specified by Ford Explorer drivers who have experience in long-term vehicle use. By the way, it is not a fact that these averages will coincide with the data on fuel consumption of a particular car. Obviously, this depends on the factors mentioned above.

By the way, due to the radically different operating conditions in winter and summer, it is worth taking into account seasonality in order to determine the actual fuel consumption. It would be useful if the manufacturer made the corresponding calculations.

According to the collected data, it was possible to determine that the approximate average fuel consumption of the 2019 Ford Explorer looks like this:

Thus, it is noticeable that reviews from Ford Explorer owners note predominantly increased fuel consumption compared to the characteristics specified by the concern. Some reviews contain information about car consumption under different driving styles and in some extreme conditions (for example, traffic jams or off-road conditions). In this case, the figure can be truly fantastic - 25 liters per 100 km.

Serial production of the legendary Ford Explorer SUV was launched in 1990. The first four generations of the model are a mid-size SUV; starting in 2011, when production of the fifth generation of the car began, the Ford Explorer changed its class to a full-size crossover.

In 1990, the Ford Explorer created a real sensation among American car enthusiasts. The car's design, focused on aggression and power, fully met the needs of Americans and their idea of an ideal car. The “American” has also gained popularity among domestic drivers. The car is highly valued due to its excellent driving performance, spacious interior and the presence of innovative systems that contribute to a comfortable stay in the cabin. Having assessed the dimensions, almost every car enthusiast will have a question: “What is the fuel consumption of the Ford Explorer per 100 km?”

Ford Explorer V (3.5 l)

With the 3.5-liter engine, a new era in Ford Explorer production began. The manufacturer changed its course of development, abandoning bulky power units in favor of more economical and technically advanced engines. Starting with the fifth generation, the Ford Explorer has a 3.5-liter V6 engine installed under the hood. The manufacturer has certified the following official fuel consumption for this power unit: 13.8 liters in the city and 8.8 liters on the highway.

Reviews from owners of the Ford Explorer 3.5 indicate the following amount of gasoline consumption by the modification:

  1. Evgeniy, Kazan. I have owned a Ford Explorer 5 since 2014. I can't be happier with the car. The only breakdown for the entire time was that after 90 thousand km, only one shock absorber was replaced. There were no costs on my part, since the car was under warranty. As for the actual fuel consumption of the car, my figures are as follows: 14.5 liters in summer and 15.5 liters in the city in winter, 9 liters on the highway.
  2. Maxim, Omsk. I am the owner of a brand new 2016 Ford Explorer, assembled in Russia at a car plant in Yelabuga. I’ve always liked SUVs; when I saw the updated design of the Explorer, I immediately decided for myself that I would raise money for this car. There are practically no shortcomings in the car, except for the lack of windshield blowing. Car consumption rate: 13.5 l and 9 l city/highway.
  3. Konstantin, Samara. I have always liked Ford due to the quality of its build. The Ford Explorer is a technologically advanced car. I liked the car twice: when I saw the new design and when I got behind the wheel. I'm still worried about the expense. During the running-in, a lot of gasoline was consumed - 16 liters in Samara. A few months later, in winter and summer, the same figure is 12.5 liters and 8 liters on the highway. I definitely like this car.
  4. Andrey, Krasnoyarsk. 249 hp quite enough for those who like to ride with the breeze. Impressions from Explorer are the most positive. Most recently, the whole family traveled around the country. This is an excellent car for long trips with visits to various remote areas. The cross-country ability is excellent, plus acceptable gasoline consumption - 8 liters at an average highway speed of 110 km/h

In the line of power units, the 3.5-liter engine is one of the most economical and technologically advanced engines. With a power of 249 hp. Ford Explorer 3.5 easily overcomes obstacles in its path, while allowing owners of fast driving to experience all the advantages of the car while driving along the highway.

Ford Explorer IV (4.0, 4.6 l)

The fourth generation of the SUV supports two different engines: a 4-liter six-cylinder engine with 210 horsepower and a 4.6-liter eight-cylinder engine with 295 horsepower. Gasoline consumption of the 4.0 modification is: 15.7/11.2 liters city and highway, respectively. The much more powerful and top-end 4.6-liter version officially consumes, according to the manufacturer, 16.8 liters and 11.8 liters in the city and on the highway.

The actual fuel consumption of a 4.0-liter engine is:

  1. Stas, Kemerovo. I picked up a Ford Explorer 4 from 2008 with 100,000 miles. If you drive carefully and slowly, then on the highway you can reduce the car’s “appetite” to 11 liters, with cruise control about 9 liters. In the city, of course, there is too much - up to 20 liters in winter.
  2. Daniil, Orenburg. I have an American-built Explorer. I took it with mileage of more than 150 thousand. There are practically no breakdowns. The car is stable and reliable. Of course, gluttonous. In the city around 18 liters in summer and 19-20 liters in winter. There is also overconsumption on the highway - 15 liters. I don't know, maybe I'm driving wrong? But I read the reviews, in almost all of them this type of engine consumes too much fuel.
  3. Vyacheslav, Ryazan. Ford Explorer is a powerful car, but extremely voracious. However, every SUV owner should be prepared for the fact that he will have to refuel a lot and often. But sometimes it seems to me that I stop at the gas station more often than anyone else. 22 liters in the city during frosts and 20 consistently in the summer. What to do? Comfort and power come at a price.
  4. Yuri, Lipetsk. I have an Explorer all-wheel drive with an automatic 4.0 engine. The consumption is normal - city 16 liters, highway 12 liters. I'm completely fine with this. The only drawback is the quality of service - the dealership can’t even figure out the firmware properly.

Few people can achieve the official gasoline consumption of 15.7 liters in the city and 11.2 liters on the highway. In most cases, this type of engine increases gasoline consumption - in some cases, the consumption rate increases from 15.7 liters to 20 liters. As for driving on the highway, car owners note more truthful figures certified by the manufacturer.

Real fuel consumption of a 4.6-liter engine according to car owners:

  1. Ilya, Tver. I like this car. No complaints. There is a heated steering wheel and seats, a comfortable interior. Quality service. I have had the car since 2008. During this time, a certain indicator of the car’s “appetite” has already been established: 17 liters – winter, 18 liters – summer. Ford Explorer with manual transmission.
  2. Vasily, Belgorod. I have had an Explorer since 2007 – a car for long trips and travel. You can fit everything in it. Disadvantages include noise insulation and poor road lighting. You can also write down the amount of fuel consumed per 100 km here - 18 liters is stable within the city limits.
  3. Alexander, Arkhangelsk. I've been driving SUVs all my life. Probably the Explorer is my last car. I don't want to change it. Despite the solid consumption of the 95th: 19 liters in Arkhangelsk. I rarely leave the city, I don’t travel, I go only for work. But one day I noticed that at a speed of 120 km/h, about 12 liters are consumed.
  4. Bogdan, Murmansk. I've been dreaming of buying a Ford Explorer for a long time. About 8 years ago my dream came true. Then the choice was made on the fourth generation with a 4.6 liter engine and automatic transmission. Car rating - 5 out of 5. Consumption on average is 20 liters with idle time in traffic jams. But personally, I am satisfied with this indicator.

Explorer is a crossover from the famous American manufacturer Ford Motor Company. Production of this brand began in 1990, and continues to this day. The fuel consumption of the Ford Explorer is quite low, which is why the car is so popular. In addition, with each subsequent modification, this brand becomes more comfortable and easier to use.

The fuel consumption rate for a Ford Explorer depends on the quality of certain characteristics. Not only the type of modification can increase or decrease fuel costs. The quality of consumables also plays a big role in the consumption of the unit. These indicators are also displayed at the vehicle speed.

There are several subtypes of Explorer.

  • I generation.
  • II generation.
  • III generation.
  • IV generation.
  • V generation.

Fuel costs

Explorer (1990-1992 year of manufacture)

Gasoline consumption for a Ford Explorer per 100 km in the city is 15.7 liters, on the highway about 11.2 liters. In the combined cycle the car consumes 11.8 liters.

Explorer (1995-2003 production year)

Ford Explorer fuel consumption per 100 km at mixed work is 11.8l., according to official data, fuel consumption in urban cycle - 15.7, on the highway -11.2l.

Stamps (2002-2005 year of manufacture)

The average gasoline consumption of a Ford Explorer on the highway can be about 11.2 liters per 100 kilometers. In the city the car will consume -15.7l. With a mixed cycle, fuel consumption per 100 km varies from 11.0-11.5 liters.

Explorer (2006-2010 production year)

After a complete restyling of the model, it was possible to modernize not only its appearance, but also some technical characteristics. Manufacturers have reduced the costs of fuel and other consumables, making this brand one of the most economical in its class.

Ford Explorer fuel consumption in the city is 15.5-15.7 l, in the extra-urban cycle - 11.0-11.2 l., in mixed operation mode, consumption is 11.5-11.8 l per 100 km.

Stamps (2010-2015 year of manufacture)

Two main types of engines are used as standard:

  • V4 with a volume of 2.0 liters and a power of 240 horsepower.
  • V6 with a volume of 3.5 liters and a power of almost 300 hp.

Fuel consumption in city mode can range from 11.8 to 15 liters. On the highway, the car consumes about -8.5-8.8 liters per 100 kilometers.

2016 Ford Explorer

The 2016 Ford Explorer all-wheel drive SUVs have a six-cylinder engine that produces approximately 250 horsepower.

Having such characteristics, the car is able to accelerate to 175 km/h in just 7.9 seconds. The actual fuel consumption for the 2016 Ford Explorer is 12.4L. The basic equipment of the car includes an automatic transmission with 6 gears.

Additionally, the car is equipped with an on-board computer, adaptive headlights, rain sensors, heated seats, and other auxiliary systems. On the Internet you can find many positive reviews about this brand.

Gasoline consumption on the Ford Explorer 2016 in urban mode is 13.8 liters, in the suburban cycle the car consumes about 10.2-10.5 liters.

Initially, the Ford Explorer was considered a pure SUV, until the fourth generation. But, starting with the fifth, engineers from the company decided to reconsider the class affiliation of the model and made it a crossover. The car has been produced since 1990 and has already gone through several generations. Interestingly, restyling was never carried out. All changes in the model resulted in a new generation. Throughout its existence, the car has been repeatedly recognized as the best in its class, and has also won many awards.

Official data (l/100 km)

Engine Consumption (city) Consumption (highway) Flow (mixed)
2.0 AT (automatic) 11.8 8.4 10.2
2.3 AT (automatic) 12.4 8.4 10.7
3.5 AT (automatic) 13.8 9.8 11.8
4.0 AT (automatic) 15.7 11.2 13.9
4.6 AT (automatic) 16.8 11.8 14.5

Ford Explorer 1

Ford Explorer 1 came with only one engine, the volume of which was 4.0 liters. Its power was 160 horsepower. It was paired with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed robotic one. It was also possible to install an all-wheel drive system. Fuel consumption per 100 km ranged from 14.5 to 16.1 liters.

“I took the car for personal use, as I like the appearance of classic American SUVs. Yes, the car is not the most comfortable and fastest, but it brings unreal pleasures and impressions. This is definitely not the case with modern cars. Its downside, of course, is the huge consumption of gasoline, which in the city reaches 18 liters, and in winter - all 20,” writes Anton from Chelyabinsk.

“The car was purchased in America in the very first years of production. Back then it was one of the best models on the SUV market. And the car proves this to this day, since I have been driving it for more than 25 years. I try to take care of it as best I can, because if something suddenly breaks, it will be difficult to fix it due to expensive and rare parts. The interior of the model is quite comfortable. Of course, in all respects it is inferior to the new products, but you will not get such driving sensations anywhere else. Even the gigantic consumption of almost 18 liters cannot overshadow the impression,” wrote Konstantin from Kaliningrad.

Ford Explorer 2

In 1994, production of the Ford Explorer 2 started. The model was slightly changed in appearance, the suspension was modified, and the range of engines was expanded. The main engine is still a 4.0 liter unit, which can develop either 160 or 208 horsepower. The drive is installed both rear and front. As for transmissions, the configurations have not changed.

The second engine is 4.9 liters, with a peak power of 215 horsepower. There are also two types of drive available here, but only a robotic gearbox is installed. The consumption of the first engine did not change, the second could consume up to 15.3 liters of fuel.

“I didn’t have much money to buy a car, but I wanted something big and powerful. I decided to choose a car from the American market, since they are made quite well, and therefore last longer. The choice fell on the second generation Explorer. Yes, the model is not new, but it meets all my requirements. The machine is suitable for any undertaking. It is especially good off-road. All-wheel drive and a powerful engine simply work wonders. But usually I only drive around the city, occasionally going out on the highway. The only negative is fuel consumption. The engine consumes up to 17 liters in the city,” said Gennady from Vladimir.

Ford Explorer 3

In 2001, Ford decided to update the Explorer model and released the third generation. Again, all attention is paid to motors, the choice of which has again expanded. The main one is still a four-liter unit capable of producing 213 horsepower. It is paired with a five-speed robot or the same mechanics. A choice of rear- or all-wheel drive is also available. Fuel consumption has decreased and is now at 13.6 liters.

The new product is a 4.6-liter unit with a capacity of 242 horses. The equipment is identical to the previous engine, but the consumption here already reaches 15 liters. The largest engine is 5.4 liters. It is controlled only by a robotic transmission, but any drive can be used. Here the engine's appetite was 16.1 liters.

“When my family acquired new representatives, I thought about changing my small sedan to something more solid and larger. For some reason I wanted an American representative, so I took the Explorer. The car is very roomy and comfortable, and the consumption of 18 liters is not scary at all,” wrote Evgeniy from St. Petersburg.

“I have owned many SUVs, but this is what gave me the most pleasure. It never broke down, behaved well on the road, and its consumption is quite economical when compared with other representatives of this class,” these are the words of Kirill from Rostov.

Ford Explorer 4

The fourth generation began rolling off production lines in 2005. Here we have already taken a serious approach to changing the appearance of the car. Now it has become quite stylish and eye-catching. We didn’t forget about the power plants. And here they did not abandon the 4.0 liter engine. It has not undergone any changes at all, all indicators are identical to the previous generation.

But the 4.6-liter unit has become much more powerful – now as much as 295 horsepower. He is paired with a robot that has six stages. Drive – traditional all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. Compared to the previous version, the consumption has decreased slightly and is now 14.2 liters.

“I never owned American cars before, although I had a lot of SUVs. What attracted me to the Explorer was the interior design. The materials are all nice and look expensive. It is also well equipped, with a lot of everything that makes driving easier. The build quality is much better than other representatives of this class, and the ride quality in general is probably the best. You can drive absolutely everywhere. I was surprised by the consumption, which is only 14 liters,” writes Leonid from Tver.

“I took the car through an exchange program. The reason for the purchase is simple and popular - the family has become larger. I needed a car that could fit a lot of people and things in order to safely go out into nature. I like everything about the Explorer: from the appearance to the interior and technical data. I consider the consumption of 14 liters quite adequate. There are representatives that are much weaker and with higher fuel consumption,” this is Nikita’s review from Cheboksary.

Ford Explorer 5

At the moment, since 2010, the fifth generation of the model is being produced, which was slightly changed in appearance in 2015. It was here that the model changed its class, becoming a crossover. The model contains the best qualities of other representatives of this species. The engine configuration options have also been seriously revised. The smallest engine now has a volume of 2.3 liters and its power is 280 horsepower. Traditionally, any drive can be installed, but the transmission can only be automatic, six-speed. Fuel consumption is only 10.9 liters.

The second power unit is 3.5 liters, the power of which reaches 249 hp, and in the sport version – 345 hp. This engine only comes with all-wheel drive and only with an automatic transmission. It consumes 14.1 liters of fuel in the city and 9.7 liters on the highway.

“Before this model, I already had two Explorers. I decided not to deviate from tradition and bought a new, fifth generation after restyling. The car is perfection itself. Everything is perfect here: appearance, quality and functionality of the interior, speed performance and cross-country ability. I try to use the car as often as possible. I’m used to fuel consumption, so 12 liters is a penny for me,” wrote Yaroslav from Lipetsk.
