The new Russian-made car Lada X-Ray is available with three different engine model options. The new internal combustion engines have 106, 110 and 122 hp in their arsenal. And they are installed depending on the Lada Xray configuration. Lada X-Ray has three engines which are offered to customers to choose from:

  • VAZ-21129 - this option is used in the basic version of the Lada X-Ray and has a power of 106 horses;
  • HR16DE – engine from foreign partners, is reliable and has 110 hp;
  • VAZ 21179 is the most powerful engine of those installed on the Lada Xray, it has 122 hp.

All engines that are installed on the Lada X-Ray run on gasoline, and the most powerful version has a special VAZ automated manual transmission.

Engine VAZ-21129

This engine, intended for installation on the Lada Xray, differs from analogues in its special intake system. During its operation at low speeds, air is supplied differently - through elongated intake channels. If the speed increases, air begins to flow through short channels. As a result, the composition and consistency of the fuel mixture changes; in the first case, it is weakly saturated with oxygen, and in the second, vice versa. This operating principle allows you to significantly increase the power of the unit with relatively low fuel consumption. In the absence of such a system, a similar device produces no more than 98 horses.

This engine in the Lada X-Ray will only be produced in tandem with a gearbox from Renault, which has 5 speed gears. The VAZ-21129 power unit has the following characteristics:

  • the cylinder has a diameter of 82 millimeters;

HR16DE and its features

This engine, which you can get with the new Lada X-Ray, has the same volume - 1.6 liters. But with a similar volume it has more power, which is 110 horsepower. HR16DE was developed for a Russian car by the friendly concern Renault-Nissan. It has proven itself on some models of these manufacturers and is widely known throughout the world. Therefore, we can say with confidence that the Lada Xray has a world-class unit. The new engine has a number of fundamental differences in relation to VAZ devices, which are equipped with cast iron blocks and conventional belts. The unit has an excellent reputation and promising technical characteristics. However, time will tell us which option is better.

HR16 is equipped with an aluminum cylinder block. The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy. Instead of a timing belt, this device has a stronger and more durable metal chain. The engine is made without hydraulic compensators, but at the same time, it is equipped with a system for changing the gas distribution phases. Each cylinder has two injectors.

The HR16 engine is installed in the Lada X-Ray car in combination with a French gearbox from Renault. Based on reviews from car enthusiasts, we can conclude that the HR16 has excellent dynamics and works flawlessly. Engine characteristics:

VAZ-21179

The most powerful engine for the Lada Xray is manufactured directly by AvtoVAZ. It has excellent technical characteristics and is combined with a robotic gearbox. For the Lada X-Ray, the development of this unit was carried out by a branch of AvtoVAZ called “SuperAuto”.

Larger volume in this engine is achieved by increasing the stroke of the piston itself, and not by boring the cylinder block, as was done previously. The size of the connecting rods and crankshaft has been changed. The engine assembly uses foreign graphite pistons from the famous Federal-Mogul brand.

This new engine used in the Lada Xray has fewer small parts, which increases its reliability and performance without affecting performance. The unit has impressive torque. Lada Xray, equipped with such an engine, consumes significantly less oil. The VAZ 21179 engine for Lada Xray has the following technical characteristics:

  • volume - 1797 cubic centimeters;
  • 4 cylinders/16 valves;
  • timing belt drive;
  • Cylinder D – 84 mm;
  • Power – 122 hp.

With these internal combustion engine parameters, the Lada Xray will develop max. Speed ​​182 km/h. The car will accelerate to 100 km/h in just over 10 seconds. Fuel consumption depending on the driving cycle:

This power unit is an adaptation of the VAZ 21127 engine known from Priora to EURO 5, that is, a distant relative of the 21083 unit. There is, of course, an increased displacement, a new cylinder head with a pair of camshafts and hydraulic compensators, an intake tract of variable length, as well as an absolute pressure and air temperature sensor instead already outdated mass air flow sensor.



The main problems of this engine are the short service life of the pump, oil wastage, tripping when cold and often bursting coolant expansion tanks.

At first, the Lada Xray was equipped with a power unit from Renault-Nissan with the H4Mk index, well known from a number of models of the Franco-Japanese concern. This aluminum engine with a timing chain drive and a phase regulator on the intake shaft does not have hydraulic compensators, so it is necessary to periodically adjust the thermal clearances of the valves.

In the summer of 2019, the French-Japanese internal combustion engine with the H4M index returned to the model range due to the installation of a CVT on the X-RAY. Its power was increased to 113 hp. and 152 Nm.

Engine VAZ 21129

The base power unit for this car was, as one would expect, the domestic VAZ-21129 engine. It was also the base engine for X-Ray's predecessor, the Lada Vesta, and was also used in the assembly of earlier models.

This power unit is available exclusively on the Lada X-Ray in the Optima configuration - the base for this model. Other trim levels are not equipped with this engine.

In general, this development has proven itself successfully. The service life of the Lada X-Ray engine is quite high, due to which malfunctions rarely occur in it, and it practically does not require serious repairs during operation. For this reason, due to its high reliability coefficient, it is used to equip many models of the AvtoVAZ concern to this day.


The rated power of this engine is 106 horsepower. The engine displaces 1.6 liters and has sixteen piston valves, providing a higher level of performance than its eight-valve counterpart.

Unfortunately, the power of an engine of this type is somewhat insufficient for a car with the weight of a good SUV. Acceleration from zero to hundreds with this engine takes almost 12 seconds, which indicates relatively low dynamics and the ability to accelerate along the way. The maximum speed of the model equipped with this engine is only 170 km/h. At the same time, this engine is the weakest of those offered in the line and consumes the most fuel - seven and a half liters per hundred kilometers of mixed driving style. A diesel engine based on the VAZ-21129 will show lower consumption and it will be possible to compare its performance with a gasoline unit.


This domestic engine is combined with a French transmission - a five-speed manual transmission, which is successfully used in the assembly of the second generation Renault Logan. The combination is quite good - given the high noise level of a similar domestic transmission, this import substitution affected the quality of the model in an exclusively positive way.

H4Mk engine

The next engine in the line of engines offered to domestic buyers is the H4Mk, a development of the Japanese concern Nissan, whose engine was successfully used to power the serial Vesta. It comes complete with the French gearbox previously described above. It is worth noting that they harmonize well with each other, showing good performance characteristics within this model.

The engine of Japanese origin also has a volume of 1.6 liters and is designed for sixteen piston valves. However, it is rated at 114 horsepower, which has been converted to 110 hp. after fitting it to the new hatchback.

Even such a small difference as four hp. under the hood, allow this engine to show a higher level of “professional compliance” than the domestic version described above. Acceleration from zero to hundreds takes just over 10 seconds, which provides greater driving dynamics (especially in urban conditions, when starting from a traffic light or making overtaking maneuvers). The maximum speed has not improved too noticeably - 171 km/h, but fuel consumption has decreased to 6.9 liters per hundred kilometers.

This power unit is equipped with the X-Ray configurations - “Comfort”, “Top” and “Prestige”. Undoubtedly, it shows really decent results, so there will be quite a lot of people who want to buy this car.


Engine VAZ 21179

The flagship of the engine line for the Lada X-Ray is the domestic development of the VAZ-21179. The only 1.8-liter engine for the Lada X-Ray competes worthy with previous options, and in many respects wins a complete and unquestioning victory.

The power of this 1.8-liter unit is 122 hp, which increases the maximum speed reserve to 183 kilometers per hour. However, it accelerates more slowly than the previous power unit - to reach a speed of 100 km/h from a standstill, the car will need almost 11 seconds.


Due to the use of a robotic five-speed automatic transmission as a transmission, the VAZ-21179 engine in this assembly is characterized by less dynamics compared to the less powerful H4Mk. A robotic automatic switches gears less efficiently than an experienced driver using a manual transmission - this explains some of the loss in acceleration time. However, with the help of AMT, you can also use the manual gear shift function - then this disadvantage will be reduced to zero.

But AMT has a beneficial effect on fuel consumption. It is only 7.1 liters per hundred kilometers. This is slightly less than for the first, least powerful VAZ 21129 engine offered in this line.

The proposed power unit is used in the same three trim levels “Comfort”, “Top” and “Prestige”, which are specified for the Japanese engine. The flagship engine is not included in the basic package.

We can say that in terms of speed parameters, the version with an automatic transmission is the leader with 122 hp. s, and the Lada with AMT consumes less fuel. This is not surprising. However, this naturally affected the cost of the model. And if the price tag of the basic Lada XRay, whose power unit produces 106 hp under the hood. s., starts from 529 thousand rubles, then the option offering the Lada X-Ray engine of 122 hp. With.
