Rules for the movement of cyclists on the roadway. Traffic rules for cyclists

Many cyclists think about using their bike as a vehicle and riding it to work, to the country, to shops, to nature... Riding on the sidewalks among pedestrians is quite problematic; there are only one or two special bicycle paths in a city with a population of one million, and even that is not a fact. There is only one option left - roads and highways, and traffic on them is equal to cars.

Not everyone knows that a bicycle is equal to a car, and on the road it is necessary to follow the general rules of movement on the roadway. Going out with a bike unprepared is absurd and dangerous, so now we will determine where and how a bicycle driver should ride and what to follow when doing so.

Bicycle safety in the “iron kingdom”

To ride a bicycle safely on the roadway you must:

  • Good condition of transport.
  • Required position relative to other vehicles.
  • Optimal speed.
  • Maintaining distance, lateral interval.
  • Attentiveness, good response.
  • Visibility from the outside.
  • Compliance with the requirements of road signs, markings, traffic lights.

When moving along the roadway, the bicycle must be in good condition. First of all, this concerns the steering wheel and brake system. It is also necessary to check the mounting of the wheels to the frame, the condition of the transmission and the air pressure in the tires.

We decide which side of the road we need to be on. This is a rather controversial issue among cyclists: some argue that it is necessary to ride in the direction of travel, others - “against the grain”, like pedestrians - on the side of the road, others don’t care at all, even if it’s in the middle. So who is right?

Traffic regulations clearly and clearly defined the position of a bicycle on the road: passing other vehicles, moving as far to the right as possible. This could be the edge of the road, the right lane in multi-lane traffic. The key word "possible" means that traffic rules allow cyclists to veer to the left and even enter oncoming traffic. Such cases include:

  • Driving around a parked car.
  • Poor quality of the road surface, when driving on which you can fall and create an emergency situation.
  • Driving through the scene of an accident or cordon.

A group of cyclists moves in one row, in the extreme right position, at a distance from each other. Riding parallel in one lane, as the rules allow for motorcycles, is prohibited for cyclists.

Cyclists are fish in water on the right side of the road

The speed of the bike in traffic is of great importance. According to traffic regulations, driving synchronously with the flow is the safest for each vehicle. On the road it is necessary to develop and maintain a fairly high speed, at least 20 km/h. Driving too slowly interferes with cars, as they are forced to maneuver around the cyclist. This is especially true for narrow roads, where passing oncoming and oncoming traffic is difficult. However, high speed is only safe if all traffic is moving quickly.

The distance for a cyclist is the distance between him and other vehicles in length. Side spacing is the distance across the width. For comfortable driving on the road, they must be maintained so that in a dangerous situation you can turn to the side. If the distance behind the car in front decreases, you need to slow down. And, conversely, speed up if it decreases with traffic behind. When moving in parallel, you should not press too close to passing and parked cars, and here’s why:

  • There is a risk of falling on the car due to unevenness on the road.
  • The door of a parked car may suddenly open.
  • A car can hit a cyclist.

Attention is the key to successful cycling as a driver. You should carefully monitor what is happening in front and to the sides. The road is movement, and the situation changes every second. It will be useful to purchase a rear-view mirror and install it on the steering wheel: this way you can keep an eye on the road behind you.

An integral attribute of mindfulness is the reaction: the higher it is, the more opportunities there are to avoid an unpleasant situation. The reaction speed decreases when tired, taking medications and when intoxicated. In these cases, the rules prohibit driving, including a bicycle.

Peace of mind will give the cyclist the confidence to be seen. It is recommended to have reflectors on the frame, lighting devices (a headlight at the front and a flashing red light at the rear) when driving at dusk, and bright clothes, preferably also with reflective stripes.

Became visible - avoided problems and saved life

Traffic rules oblige, along with car drivers, to comply with the requirements of road signs, markings and traffic lights. Current road signs for bicycles:

  • Priority signs.
  • Crosswalk.
  • No entry.
  • Prohibiting turns.
  • Prescriptive directions.
  • Signs of special requirements: one-way traffic, route traffic.
  • "Driving in lanes" signs.

Pay attention to the signs

Markings for cyclists:

  • Solid line (no crossing allowed).
  • Broken line (can be crossed).
  • Pedestrian zebra crossing.
  • Islands of safety.
  • Yellow markings prohibiting stopping and/or parking.

As for traffic lights, everything is simple: red, yellow - stop, green - the road is clear. When the additional section of the traffic light is on, traffic is allowed after other vehicles have passed through the main green section. For a cyclist, the “right” arrow will be relevant.

Safe flight when maneuvering

Maneuvering on the road is a deviation from a straight trajectory. According to traffic rules, the driver in this situation must give way to vehicles moving straight ahead. Maneuvers on the roadway include starting to move, changing lanes, and turning. We will consider the last category in a separate section, but now let’s talk about how to properly start moving and change lanes.

At the beginning of the movement, you must give way to everyone traveling in the same direction: cars, motorcycles, other bicycles. As soon as a safe gap has formed and other passing vehicles are still far away, we deviate to the left, straighten the steering wheel and pick up speed. When turning onto the road from the adjacent territory (yards, driveways, platforms), it is also necessary to let everyone through.

Changing lanes is necessary when avoiding obstacles or moving in the permitted direction. For example, the right lane is only for right turns, but you need to drive straight. When changing lanes, the trajectory should be as straight as possible, so you need to start deviating to the left in advance. We give way to passing traffic and reduce speed. When driving around obstacles on narrow roads with an exit on the left side, you must stop and let oncoming traffic pass. If the obstacle is on the oncoming side, then the cyclist has the right of way on his territory.

Scheme of passing oncoming traffic on a narrow road

Driving through intersections and crossing roads

In general, there are four ways to drive through a road intersection: continue straight, turn right or left, or turn around. A right turn for a cyclist is allowed at all regular intersections, as it is made from the extreme right position - the legal place of the cyclist.

A cyclist can also freely ride straight from his lane, and he will have an advantage over those turning right. If the right lane is only for a turn, then to drive straight you need to change lanes into the adjacent lane, having first given way to everyone who does not intend to change lanes.

A bicycle driver is only allowed to turn left and change direction from roads where there is one lane in each direction and there are no tram tracks. By the way, about trams: at intersections they have an advantage over a bicycle; if the red light is not on for it, it does not leave the secondary road or the depot.

The tram is always the main one

Warning instructions for turning: “right” - an outstretched arm to the right, “left” and “turn” - an outstretched arm to the left. The direction of turn must be shown in advance, before the maneuver.

Giving signals when turning - good manners, serious approach

Crossroads are divided into several types:

  • Unregulated, equivalent roads.
  • Without traffic lights, with a certain priority.
  • Adjustable.

The first type of intersections is passed according to the “interference on the right” rule. We look to the right and miss everything that moves from there. When turning left at such intersections, you must give way to the entire oncoming traffic unless it has its own obstacle on the right (to the left of the bicycle).

Driving directions “obstruction on the right”

Intersections with priority are intersections of roads where, according to the rules, some pass “without looking”, others give way. The former move along the main road, the latter are on the secondary road. On the main road, a bicycle has the right of way, just like a car. However, you need to be careful, slow down a little and pass only if they really allow you to do so.

The most unpleasant maneuver on the main road is turning left. Here you will need to first let through all the passing people, and then the oncoming ones. Sometimes the main road may change direction: there is an information board under the sign. If such a road turns left, then there is no need to let anyone through. On a secondary road, a bicycle is inferior to everyone driving on the main road if they intend to drive straight or to the left, and only to future passing vehicles when turning right.

Intersection with priority passage

Signalized intersections are usually intersections of major streets where left turns will not be permitted. There are two ways to rotate:

  • Get off your bike and cross the zebra crossings.
  • Drive "at the corner": straight on the green, turn 90 degrees and drive straight on the green again. This can be done where there are no pedestrian crossings, and if there are no cars parked at the edge of the road. In general, the first option is safer.

Turn left from a multi-lane road at the corner (green lines)

You are allowed to drive straight and to the right when the signal is green, including a flashing one. You can complete the intersection on yellow or even red. If the traffic light is flashing yellow or turned off, then we look at the priority signs or get off and cross the road on foot.

There are also T-shaped signalized intersections. They are interesting because you can turn left from a road without a direct passage, even if there are more than one lane. To do this, you need to move to the left lane in advance and calmly turn on green: the bicycle will be to the right of everyone and will not create interference. Don't forget to give turn signals when changing lanes and before turning.

Attention! When turning right or left, you can cross a pedestrian crossing only if there are no people on it. That is, we act like in a car: at turns we let all pedestrians pass, and we also let them complete the transition.

You need to cross the road with a bicycle with your own feet, using a pedestrian crossing. Unfortunately, many people neglect this and ride directly on the saddle. This cannot be done for the following reasons:

  • You can hit a pedestrian at a zebra crossing.
  • There is a danger of crashing into a curb and falling off your bike.
  • A car driver turning a corner may not notice a cyclist and hit him.

The same applies to controlled crossings (without an intersection): the rules clearly state that a cyclist is required to cross the roadway as a pedestrian. A self-respecting bicycle driver always remembers where he can and cannot ride.

This is the wrong cyclist

Where it is advisable to travel, not worth it, prohibited

You can, but you should not drive on streets that are too wide and have heavy traffic. Of course, an experienced road cyclist will ride everywhere, but if there are more reasonable options, it is better to choose them. Also, do not overuse driving on highways and roads with a large number of heavy vehicles. We must remember that a truck and a bicycle are incomparable things.

It is prohibited to ride a bicycle on highways without traffic lights. The speed of cars on such roads is usually close to 90 km/h even in the right lane, and a modest 25-30 km/h is completely out of place here. It is also prohibited to ride on two wheels in tunnels.

If the rules are strictly and timely followed, cycling on the roads will be relatively safe and comfortable. To these should be added the unspoken principle of the “three Ds”, as well as being respectful and patient with other participants. There can never be too much politeness, but it will definitely return.

A bicycle is a convenient and environmentally friendly means of transport, with which you can quickly get to your destination or just have a great time with friends outside the city. There are no age restrictions to ride it. Kids start pedaling from an early age. But unfortunately, not everyone knows the rules of the road for cyclists. But driving on the roadway can be very dangerous.

General provisions

There is an official definition according to which a bicycle is a vehicle on two or three wheels, driven by muscle power. Official rules for cyclists cover all road users. Few people know that the person driving any vehicle is the driver. The term "cyclist" is not official. If a person rolls a vehicle along the road rather than rides it, then he is a pedestrian. In addition, pedestrians include any road users who move on skis, skates, or with the help of any other sports equipment. People carrying out repair work on the road are not considered pedestrians.

Traffic rules for cyclists also describe the zones into which the road is divided. The main element is a special track designed for riding a two-wheeled vehicle. This element of the road must be marked with an appropriate sign. A separate pedestrian road for cyclists describes this element of the road as an area intended for pedestrian traffic. Exit and entry into this zone are indicated by special signs. In some cases, riding two-wheelers is allowed here. The element of the road that is adjacent to the roadway is also called a sidewalk.

While riding a bicycle on the road, any unforeseen situation can happen. Before traveling a long distance, you should check the condition of the vehicle. The bicycle must have a high-quality brake, a good steering wheel and a loud sound signal. If you plan to drive at night, it is necessary to equip the vehicle with a reflector or flashlight. The rules for scooterists and cyclists state that in the event of a malfunction, a pedestrian has the right to roll the vehicle only in the direction of movement of other vehicles. It is prohibited to go out onto a dark roadway without reflectors.

Basics for cyclists

Sometimes there is a special zone on the road for the movement of two-wheeled vehicles. In this case, cyclists should give preference to it. The cars move at impressive speeds, and even the most experienced two-wheeler owner will not be able to maneuver safely between them. Those who still decide to drive on the roadway should stick to the far right lane. You can also drive on the side of the road if this does not cause inconvenience to pedestrians and other road users.

The rules of the road for cyclists do not include the ability to travel on the motorway. Pedestrians, horse riders, and any vehicles that are not capable of traveling at speeds exceeding 40 kilometers per hour are prohibited from traveling here. Driving on the expressway can be hazardous to health and life.

When leaving a pedestrian or residential area onto a roadway, a cyclist must carefully examine the situation on the road. You must yield to those vehicles that are no more than 100 meters away. Pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users are not allowed to cross the road.

There are special rules for cyclists who travel in groups. Such travelers need to split into several columns of 10 people. The distance between individual groups of cyclists must be at least 100 meters. This will ensure unhindered movement of other road users. If there is a line marking the edge on the road, it should be located to the left of the group of cyclists. In this case, the distance between moving cars and two-wheeled vehicles should not be less than a meter. If a group of cyclists moves along the roadway at night, each vehicle must be equipped with lights. The front light should be white and the back light should be red. This will help other road users understand what trajectory the group of cyclists is moving along.

Driving on a busy roadway

An adult cyclist has every right to move on the roadway within the city. At the same time, he must stick to the right edge of the road. It is not recommended to drive further than 1 meter from the right edge. This can only be done to avoid any obstacles on the road. Traffic rules for cyclists prohibit the use of disabled vehicles on the roadway. You cannot move without keeping your hands on the steering wheel and your feet on the pedals. It is not recommended to drive onto a busy road in conditions of snowfall, reduced visibility (fog) or ice.

Particular attention should be paid to traffic with passengers. It is not recommended to transport anyone on the frame. For children under seven years of age, a special seat with seat belts must be equipped. Drivers of this age do not have the right to drive onto the roadway unless accompanied by an adult.

The rules for cyclists also describe the possibility of carrying goods. When driving on the roadway, it is allowed to transport luggage that protrudes beyond the vehicle by no more than 0.5 meters. In addition, you should not ride on a busy road if the load interferes with the control of the bicycle. This may cause inconvenience to other vehicle drivers.

Correct passage of intersections

The classic priority rule applies at every intersection. This means that a vehicle traveling on a secondary road must yield to a car or bicycle traveling on a main road. When turning right, the driver must give way to those driving straight.

Much more difficulties can arise when driving through an uncontrolled intersection. In most cases, a cyclist must yield the right-of-way to a four-wheeler. The only exception is a roadway with a specially equipped path. In addition, many roads have bicycle traffic lights. The rules for cyclists state that they must also obey standard road traffic lights that regulate the movement of vehicles and pedestrians.

What signals should a cyclist give?

Road users will be able to travel safely if they use a special signal language. Motorists make various signs using their headlights. Cyclists communicate their intentions using hand movements. If a bicycle driver, moving along the roadway, intends to turn, he must extend his straight arm in the direction of the turn. When moving to the right, we extend our right arm, and when moving to the left, we extend our left arm. What if, by coincidence, it is not possible to signal a turn with the right hand? There is an exit! You can bend the arm opposite to the rotation at the elbow and extend it upward.

Every cyclist on a busy road must also inform other traffic of his intention to stop. To do this, you just need to extend either hand up. for cyclists state that any signals should be given no later than a minute before performing a certain action on the road.

What should cyclists not do?

Road rules for cyclists are not meant to be broken. They allow two-wheeler drivers to reach their destination safely without causing additional disruption to other road users. Cyclists are prohibited from riding on the roadway if there is a specially equipped bicycle path nearby. It is not recommended to drive a disabled vehicle. The movement of cyclists on roadsides, sidewalks and pedestrian paths is allowed only in extreme cases. At the same time, the driver must adhere to the minimum speed so as not to endanger other road users.

It is prohibited to move along a busy highway without special protective elements. These include a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads. Persons under 14 years of age may travel on the road only if accompanied by an adult. Everyone should ride a bicycle while holding the handlebars firmly with at least one hand. It is prohibited to transport passengers or large cargo on the frame. Children under seven years of age ride in a specially equipped seat with seat belts. You cannot tow a bicycle on the roadway. The faulty product can only be transported manually.

If there are several lanes in the direction the cyclist is moving or if there is a tram line nearby, turning around is prohibited. The road rules for cyclists are the same as for cars. You can only turn on a special section of the road. A road that has several lanes in one direction at once can be a high-speed road. Cars here travel at speeds of more than 60 kilometers per hour. Failure to comply with requirements can lead to disastrous consequences. The rules for cyclists on the road are completely simple. Following them is a guarantee of the safety of road users.

Mass cycling events

More and more representatives of the younger generation prefer environmentally friendly two-wheeled transport. Bicycle lovers hold many events. People with the same views gather at them. All cycling events are a beautiful and spectacular event. However, achieving order in a large group of people with their own vehicles is not so easy. In addition, many participants in such events do not even know what rules exist for cyclists. It is wrong to assume that safety and order at any event is a matter of the qualifications of the organizer. The organizer of an event only creates conditions so that its participants can have a fun and useful time. Those who do not know the basic rules should not attend such events.

The main thing for cyclists at such events is knowledge of the elementary aspects of movement within a large group of people. It is worth noting that there are no age restrictions for participation in promotions of this kind. Even a child can come in their own vehicle. But no one has canceled the cyclist rules for schoolchildren. It is better if a child under 14 years of age is accompanied by an adult. It is not recommended to take children under 10 years old to the bike ride. The baby may get lost in the crowd and create obstacles for other road users.

Basic rules of conduct at mass cycling events

Safety rules for cyclists are not a guarantee that the event will take place without incident. In addition to the requirements regarding movement, you must follow the unwritten laws of interaction with other participants in the action. First of all, you must always keep your distance and move straight along the track. If the movement is carried out in a column, you cannot overtake its participants. Those who want to ride with a friend, neighbor, or mother need to stand next to them at the very start. By moving between the participants in the column, the cyclist creates serious interference for the others.

The organizers of the event may create new rules for cyclists who wish to participate in the event. They are definitely worth sticking to. You need to move without deviating from the trajectory of the main mass. If the column is following the roadway, you should not drive onto the sidewalk. The only exceptions are cyclists under 14 years of age. Driving in the pedestrian zone is allowed only at low speed.

When moving in a group of cyclists, it is necessary to take into account their interests. While driving a vehicle, you should not smoke. It should be remembered that not all participants in the action have Cigarette smoke may simply be unpleasant to someone. In addition, there are already a lot of emissions on the road. It is also undesirable to talk on the phone while moving in a column. This distracts the attention of the driver of the vehicle, as well as other road users. A cyclist may accidentally press the button. This will cause him to fall and also disturb others.

Any maneuvers on the road while driving in a group should be coordinated with other road users. This applies to turning and stopping. Traffic rules for cyclists describe special gestures with which a traffic participant can inform others of his intentions. Before turning, you should move your arm horizontally in the appropriate direction. A raised hand indicates that the cyclist plans to stop.

It is inappropriate to show your acrobatic abilities when moving in a group. Riding on the rear wheel and jumping over obstacles looks, of course, spectacular. But such maneuvers can pose a danger to other participants in the event.

Organization of mass bicycle columns

The popularity of cycling promotions is growing every year. More and more people want to take part in these types of events. But the huge number of cyclists needs to be properly organized. Today there are entire companies that offer everything necessary to carry out such promotions. These are various reflective tapes and vests. It is possible to rent one or several vehicles at once. Volunteers also provide assistance. These are experienced cyclists who are ready to help beginners at any time.

The correct organization of an event depends on the guides, those on duty and those at the end. These are people who know and unquestioningly follow the rules for pedestrians and cyclists. The guiding drivers of the vehicles set the pace of movement of the entire column. The person assigned to this role should not move too quickly. It should be remembered that participants in the event can be people with different physical fitness. Absolutely everyone should be comfortable - both beginners and experienced cyclists. The guides ensure that other participants do not overtake, and also warn that any obstacles are approaching. An escort car always moves next to the guiding cyclists.

Duty two-wheeler drivers move inside the convoy. They keep order. Most often, those on duty stick to the right edge. This also makes it possible to control cyclists who move outside the right lane. Traffic participants on duty often have contrasting uniforms. Therefore, it is not difficult to recognize them among the others.

The trailing cyclists must ensure that the column does not stretch or break. Most often, radio communication is established with the guiding cyclist. This allows you to control the speed of movement of the entire column.

Responsibility

The movement of cyclists on the roadway is controlled. Violation by an adult is initially punishable by a simple warning. If the driver continues to evade the rules, he faces a fine of 100 rubles. It is prohibited to ride a bicycle on the roadway while intoxicated. Such behavior entails a fine of 300 to no prior warning.

If the rules for cyclists for children have been violated, the parents take responsibility. In this case, the police can report the violation to the educational institution where the offender is registered. If evasion of the rules led to a minor accident, you will have to pay 300 rubles for the misdemeanor. If harm was caused to the health of other road users, the fine will be 1,500 rubles.

Compliance with the rules is a guarantee of safety. Therefore, before purchasing a bicycle, you should carefully study the traffic rules.

In this part, we briefly note the general Rules for cyclists.

Traffic lights

6.5. If a traffic light signal is made in the form of a silhouette of a pedestrian (bicycle), then its effect applies only to pedestrians (cyclists). In this case, the green signal allows, and the red signal prohibits, the movement of pedestrians (cyclists).

To regulate the movement of cyclists, a traffic light with round signals of reduced size can also be used, supplemented by a rectangular white plate measuring 200 x 200 mm with a picture of a black bicycle.

Maneuvering signals

8.1. Before starting to move, change lanes, turn (U-turn) and stop, the driver is required to give signals with turn signals in the appropriate direction, and if they are missing or faulty - by hand. When performing a maneuver, there should be no danger to traffic or interference with other road users.

The signal for a left turn (turn) corresponds to the left arm extended to the side or the right arm extended to the side and bent at the elbow at a right angle upward. The right turn signal corresponds to the right arm extended to the side or the left arm extended to the side and bent at the elbow at a right angle upward. The brake signal is given by raising your left or right hand.

8.2. The turn signal or hand signal must be given well in advance of the maneuver and cease immediately after completion (the hand signal may be terminated immediately before the maneuver). In this case, the signal should not mislead other road users.

Lighting devices

19.1. In the dark and in conditions of insufficient visibility, regardless of the road lighting, as well as in tunnels, the following lighting devices must be turned on on a moving vehicle:

  • on all motor vehicles and mopeds - high or low beam headlights, on bicycles - headlights or lanterns, on horse-drawn carts - lanterns (if available);
  • on trailers and towed motor vehicles - side lights.

What is the maximum speed of a cyclist?

The maximum speed of a cyclist is limited to the same extent as for other vehicles. In the city it is prohibited to exceed the established limit of 60 km/h; in courtyards and residential areas the permitted speed is no more than 20 km/h. Cyclists are required to comply with speed limit road signs.

In addition, a cyclist can reach a speed above 25 km/h only using his own strength, since in accordance with the definition of “Bicycle”, the speed developed by a bicycle electric motor cannot exceed 25 km/h.

Position of cyclists on the road

Requirements for the movement of cyclists are set out in a special chapter of the Rules of the Road - “24. Additional requirements for the movement of cyclists and moped drivers.” This part requires special attention.

For cyclists over 14 years of age

24.1. Cyclists over 14 years of age must use bicycle paths, bicycle pedestrian paths, or bicycle lanes.

Important. This paragraph establishes the obligation for cyclists over 14 years of age to move on a specially designated section of the road, if available. Driving on other elements of the road is prohibited. All subsequent paragraphs establishing a different arrangement of cyclists on the road are sequence of exceptions from the first point.

Driving on the right edge of the roadway

First exception - cyclists are allowed on the right edge of the roadway– in the following cases:

  • there are no bicycle and bicycle pedestrian paths, a lane for cyclists, or there is no opportunity to move along them;
  • the overall width of the bicycle, its trailer or the cargo being transported exceeds 1 m;
  • cyclists move in columns;

And so, if there is no special designated section of the road for the movement of bicycles, the cyclist must first move along the right edge of the roadway.

Driving on the side of the road

The second exception is driving on the side of the road:

  • if there are no bicycle paths, bicycle pedestrian paths, or a lane for cyclists, or there is no opportunity to move along them or along the right edge of the roadway;

Driving on a sidewalk or pedestrian path

The third exception is on the sidewalk or pedestrian path:

  • there are no bicycle and bicycle pedestrian paths, a lane for cyclists, or there is no opportunity to move along them, and also along the right edge of the roadway or shoulder;
  • a cyclist accompanies a cyclist under 7 years of age or transports a child under 7 years of age on an additional seat, in a bicycle stroller or in a trailer designed for use with a bicycle.

As you can see, driving on a sidewalk or pedestrian path is an extreme case for cyclists. Be careful and follow this sequence when identifying a road element for cycling.

For cyclists aged 7 to 14 years

24.3. The movement of cyclists aged 7 to 14 years should be carried out only on sidewalks, pedestrian, bicycle and pedestrian paths, as well as within pedestrian zones.

Cyclists under 14 years of age are prohibited from riding on the roadway or shoulder.

For cyclists under 7 years of age

24.4. Cyclists under 7 years of age should only ride on sidewalks, pedestrian and bicycle paths (on the pedestrian side), as well as within pedestrian zones.

Cyclists under 7 years of age must ride on a section of road designated for pedestrian traffic.

Rules for the movement of cyclists on the roadway

24.5. When cyclists move along the right edge of the roadway in the cases provided for by these Rules, cyclists must only move in one row.

A column of cyclists may move in two rows if if the overall width of the bicycles does not exceed 0.75 m.

The column of cyclists must be divided into groups of 10 cyclists in the case of single-row traffic or in groups of 10 pairs in the case of double-lane traffic. To make overtaking easier the distance between groups should be 80 – 100 m.

Rules for the movement of cyclists on the sidewalk and pedestrian areas

24.6. If the movement of a cyclist on a sidewalk, pedestrian path, shoulder or within pedestrian zones endangers or interferes with the movement of other persons, the cyclist must dismount and follow the requirements provided for by these Rules for the movement of pedestrians.

On the sidewalk, pedestrians and others have full priority over cyclists. This also applies to crossing roads and crossing exits from adjacent areas when a cyclist is moving on the sidewalk.

Cyclists are prohibited

  • drive a bicycle or moped without holding the handlebars with at least one hand;
  • transport cargo that protrudes beyond the dimensions by more than 0.5 m in length or width, or cargo that interferes with control;
  • transport passengers if this is not provided for by the design of the vehicle;
  • transport children under 7 years of age in the absence of specially equipped places for them;
  • turn left or turn around on roads with tram traffic and on roads with more than one lane for traffic in a given direction;
  • move on the road without a fastened motorcycle helmet (for moped drivers).
  • cross the road at pedestrian crossings.

Let us highlight the prohibition of turning left on roads that have more than one lane in a given direction and the position of the cyclist in front of the turn.

Before performing the maneuver, the cyclist who is the driver must take a position.

8.5. Before turning right, left or making a U-turn, the driver must take the appropriate extreme position in advance on the roadway intended for traffic in that direction...

Another important point: cyclists are prohibited from crossing the road at pedestrian crossings. In case of violation of this requirement the cyclist has no right of way.

Towing of bicycles and bicycles is prohibited.

24.9. Towing of bicycles and mopeds, as well as towing with bicycles and mopeds, is prohibited, except for towing a trailer intended for use with a bicycle or moped.

Driving on the highway is prohibited.

16.1. On highways it is prohibited:

  • traffic of pedestrians, pets, bicycles, mopeds, tractors and self-propelled vehicles, other vehicles, the speed of which, according to technical characteristics or condition, is less than 40 km/h;

Cyclist privileges

April 15, 2015 in the Rules of the Road, allowing the movement of bicycles on a dedicated lane for route vehicles.

18.2. On roads with a lane for fixed-route vehicles, marked with signs 5.11, 5.13.1, 5.13.2, 5.14, the movement and stopping of other vehicles (except for school buses and vehicles used as passenger taxis, as well as cyclists - if the lane for route vehicles is located on the right) on this strip.

This right can only be exercised if there are no bicycle and pedestrian paths or a lane for cyclists.

Will my driver's license be revoked if I'm caught riding my bike drunk?

Many cyclists mistakenly believe that riding a bicycle does not carry any responsibility. Despite the fact that regulatory authorities pay minimal attention to cyclists, the law still provides for liability for driving while intoxicated. At the beginning of the article, we noted that a bicycle is a vehicle, and a cyclist is a driver.

The rules specifically prohibit driving any vehicle while intoxicated.

2.7. The driver is prohibited from:

  • drive a vehicle while intoxicated (alcohol, drugs or other), under the influence of medications that impair reaction and attention, in a sick or tired state that jeopardizes traffic safety;

Can my driving license be revoked if I'm caught riding a bicycle while drunk? Let us turn to the article of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation according to which drunk drivers are punished:

1. Driving a vehicle by a driver who is intoxicated, if such actions do not constitute a criminal offense, –

shall entail the imposition of an administrative fine in the amount of thirty thousand rubles with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a period of one and a half to two years.

At first glance, it seems that the article is entirely suitable for cyclists and employees may try to attract attention based on it. However, riding a bicycle does not require a special driving license and obtaining, as well as deprivation of, such a right has nothing to do with driving a bicycle. For cyclists, the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation provides a special article defining liability.

Please note that if you drive a scooter or moped while intoxicated, the application of this article is completely legal. The only exception for this article is cyclists.

Fines for cyclists

Article 12.29. Violation of the Traffic Rules by a pedestrian or other person participating in traffic

2. Violation of the Traffic Rules by a person driving a bicycle, or a driver or other person directly involved in the process of road traffic (except for the persons specified in part 1 of this article, as well as the driver of the vehicle), –
eight hundred rubles.

3. Violation of traffic rules by persons specified in part 2 of this article, committed while intoxicated, –
entails the imposition of an administrative fine in the amount from one thousand to one thousand five hundred rubles.

Violations of the traffic rules discussed in this article for a cyclist will cost 800 rubles, and in case of committing a violation while intoxicated, from 1000 to 1500 rubles.

This concludes the material within this topic. Thank you for your interest.

The bicycle as a means of transportation is becoming increasingly in demand. This is a fast and environmentally friendly form of transport that allows you to maintain healthy physical shape.

Due to the fact that cyclists often move not only along pedestrians, but become direct participants in road traffic, they need to know the traffic rules for cyclists established by law in 2019.

Having studied the basic traffic rules for cyclists, you can learn how to turn correctly at a complex intersection, where it is better to move - on the sidewalk or on the side of the road, how to cross a pedestrian crossing, who should pass the intersection first - a car or a bicycle.

The role of the cyclist on the road

To learn the rules of the road for cyclists, you need to start by becoming familiar with general positioning.

A cyclist very often moves at a speed of less than 30 km/h, he is not protected by the body and special safety arches, and it is also difficult for him to indicate the direction of his movement or to study the situation on the road on the sides and behind.

All this makes the process of moving on the road more difficult and dangerous.

To avoid problems on the road and accidents, a cyclist is currently entitled to the same rights as a car and motorcycle driver. There are only a few minor limitations, which you can learn about in this article.

The authors of traffic regulations use special terms in the process of developing and agreeing on rules. Most of the descriptions are significantly shortened, which makes it possible not to clutter the reader’s mind with official words.

A bicycle is a type of vehicle with two wheels.. It is driven by muscular energy and can also be equipped with an electric motor.

A cyclist is a driver, that is, a person driving a vehicle.

As soon as a cyclist moves with a bicycle next to him, he is treated like an ordinary pedestrian. In other words, its role in traffic is completely changing.

If a cyclist carries a vehicle next to him and becomes a pedestrian, he is assigned the rights of this category of traffic.

It is worth noting that a cyclist who walks along the highway does not become a pedestrian, he is subject to the rights of a pedestrian, he is a driver.

As soon as a person gets on a bicycle, he becomes a full driver, entrusting him with all the responsibilities and rights of such.

When describing traffic rules that apply to cyclists, you first need to note the places where they can move. The permitted places of movement are quite specific.

Here are the most basic valid places:

  1. City bike paths.
  2. The right edge of the roadway, no further than a meter from the edge or directly along the side of the road. These are equivalent places. When moving along the road on foot, a cyclist must walk with the direction of traffic, and not against it, like pedestrians.
  3. In the process of moving along the sidewalk, that is, along the pedestrian zone, you can only move if the first two options are missing.

Based on the above, we can conclude that cyclists who move on sidewalks violate the rules.

A bicycle is a vehicle, not a pedestrian on wheels. This rule does not apply to children under 14 years of age. They can move along sidewalks and paths at the same time as pedestrians.

Difficult situations at intersections

There are several rather difficult situations that cyclists who move along the highway as full road users may encounter. Here are the most basic requirements for cyclists.

Review

Before performing a maneuver, the cyclist, as a rule, does not have the opportunity to look in the mirror, since there is simply no mirror.

Despite such difficulties, the cyclist is obliged to make sure that his maneuver will be carried out according to the rules, and that during the movement there will be no interference with the movement of other vehicles.

This can be done with the help of elementary turns of the head, and here you will need to practice so that the movements do not affect the control of the bicycle.

Overtaking

Cyclists, like other road users, have the right to overtake.

They have the right to carry out this process only on the left side, taking into account the possibility of all overtaken cars starting to move or accelerate.

Bicycles can also be overtaken; the rules do not prohibit moving in two rows, if this process is a violation of all other rules.

People riding this vehicle are equally subject to certain cyclist responsibilities, priority signs and related regulations.

In other words, a car turning right and moving parallel to a bicycle must give way to a bicycle traveling straight.

As for the cyclist, he is obliged to give way to vehicles traveling on the right.

Pay attention to the left turn. On a one-lane road, a cyclist has the right to turn in this direction in the same way as cars and riding motorcycles along a full trajectory.

In all other situations, there are two rotation options:

  1. Crossing an intersection as a normal pedestrian.
  2. Consecutive movement in a straight line, a stop with a turn and another drive in a straight direction.

If the intersection is crossed as a pedestrian, the cyclist must guide the bicycle with his hands. In this case, the person is endowed with all the responsibilities and rights of a pedestrian and relies on the appropriate traffic light signals.

In certain cases, cyclists must ride near corners, tunnels, bushes and other obstacles that block their view.

Due to the serious vulnerability and fragility of the cyclist compared to other road users, it is recommended to use a special sound signal.

It is he who will be evidence of an approaching vehicle due to the area of complicated visibility.

In Russia, the installation of a special bell is still a recommendation, while in other countries, the presence of a bell is mandatory.

A cyclist, like other road users, is required to give timely signals regarding planned maneuvers.

If the backpack or frame is not equipped with newfangled dimensions and turn signals, the cyclist is recommended to use hand signals, which are popular in this case.

Here are a few of the most important ones:

  1. Before turning right and changing lanes, the right arm is extended to the side or the left arm is bent at the elbow.
  2. When changing lanes or turning left, the left arm is extended or the right arm is bent at the elbow.
  3. If you want to stop, just any hand rises up.

There are also several signs that are accepted between cyclists riding in a convoy. If the left hand goes down, this indicates the presence of holes on the left, the same applies to the right hand.

In the process of giving hand signals, you have to control the bicycle with one hand. For this reason, it is also worth practicing beforehand, as this can be difficult for beginners.

Cyclists also get into accidents from time to time. In such situations, they, like motorists, bear a certain responsibility.

Cyclists in emergency situations must comply with the following rules:

  1. It is strictly forbidden to leave the scene of the incident.
  2. The bicycle must not be touched or moved.
  3. It is worth calling the traffic police.

Cyclists have the same responsibilities as regular drivers. The exception is those cases when the cyclist moves like a pedestrian, that is, driving a vehicle nearby.

Bicycle lights

In the dark, special lights or headlights must be activated on each bicycle, as light signs for cyclists.

During daylight hours, it is advisable to install low beam headlights or daytime running lights on your vehicle.

This is a legally established rule, and traffic police officers have every right to impose a fine on the cyclist.

First of all, it is worth noting that cyclists under 14 years of age are prohibited from moving along the roadway.

A separate section of the traffic rules for cyclists includes the following restrictions and rules for moving along the highway:

It is especially important for a cyclist to wear a helmet. This piece of equipment can save the life of a bicycle driver. You shouldn't skimp on your health.

In most cases, a bicycle can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h. Cyclists can appear on the roadway quite quickly and unexpectedly. Every cyclist must take this factor into account.

The movement of cyclists on the roadway in dangerous situations should be reduced to the minimum speed limit. If a cyclist violates traffic rules, a traffic police inspector has the right to fine him in accordance with modern legislation.

These requirements and restrictions are quite logical. In more detail and carefully you just need to study the features of turning left.

If a cyclist is moving through an intersection, he should not turn left. This can only be done in places where it is possible to cross a single-lane road.

Even here everything is not so simple; there are questions regarding the situation. The turn in this case will not be made from the extreme position, so the process may be accompanied by some difficulties. Each of them is worth examining in more detail.

Conclusion

The driver of an ordinary city bicycle must be a competent road user.

He must follow and know the basic rules for moving along the highway and feel fully responsible for driving on the road. Knowing the traffic rules for cyclists makes it possible to move much faster and more efficiently on your vehicle.

The established rules concern not only certain restrictions, but also traffic possibilities, among which we can note correct or priority placement on the road.

To prevent difficult situations on the road, the cyclist is obliged to give signals in the most timely manner appropriate to his subsequent movements and maneuvers.

Every cyclist must be respectful of heavier and faster road users. This is a guarantee of preserving the life and health of the cyclist, as well as an ideal opportunity to enjoy riding without violating legally established traffic rules.

    Good afternoon

    In the paragraph “Driving near obstacles” the statement is incorrect: “In Russia, the installation of a special bell is still RECOMMENDATIONAL...”

    According to clause 6 “BASIC PROVISIONS FOR ADMISSION OF VEHICLES FOR OPERATION

    AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF OFFICIALS TO ENSURING ROAD SAFETY":

    “The bicycle must have working brakes, handlebars and a SOUND SIGNAL...”

    In the spring of this year, it was planned to make changes to the traffic rules concerning cyclists. One of them is permission to cross the roadway at a controlled pedestrian crossing... Are these changes currently in effect or not?

(ArticleToC: enabled=yes)

Everyone who gets behind the wheel of a bicycle becomes a participant in traffic. Therefore, the requirements for it are as strict as for car drivers and motorcycle drivers.

To ensure the safety of themselves and others, drivers of these vehicles must follow the rules.

The number of wheeled mobile vehicles that are driven by human muscle power is growing year by year. They are bought in specialized stores and rented: they go to work, take children to kindergarten, go for walks and shopping trips, and simply use them to maintain health.

Therefore, to avoid confusion on the roads, cyclists must follow the rules.

In European countries, this type of transport is perhaps the most popular. Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belgium are the leaders in their hobby. There is a developed network of bicycle paths and special traffic lights are installed, which confirms people’s attention to mobile vehicles. In Denmark, for example, a car is now considered a luxury, and the bicycle has occupied a significant niche among means of transportation. This is explained by the introduction of a high tax on car purchases, which exceeds the cost of the car itself. Added to this was the introduction of parking fees. So this means of transportation has gained popularity, which is used to travel to places that cannot be reached on foot or by car; it is allowed to enter the center of large cities. Riding such a vehicle is also good for your health.

The advantages this vehicle provides:

  • price – it is much lower than other types of transport;
  • there is no need to buy gasoline, the prices of which are quite high;
  • small dimensions;
  • there are no problems associated with traffic jams on city roads during rush hours;
  • speed. It is lower in comparison with motorcycles and cars, however, thanks to mobility, it is faster to get to the right time by bicycle;
  • pedaling turns out to be a kind of plus: it helps to pump up the leg muscles;
  • staying in the fresh air (where there are no exhaust gases) turns out to be another plus for health;
  • Riding focuses attention and helps a person concentrate.

The list of main advantages turned out to be rather long.

But we can’t ignore the shortcomings:

  • storage problem;
  • insufficient number of parking lots in cities and equipped paths;
  • seasonality, i.e. in rainy weather and winter, this transport is ineffective.

China dominates among the main manufacturers - a huge number of factories for the assembly and production of cheap and mobile transport are concentrated there. But don’t rush to criticize the manufacturer - a lot of good words have been said about its products, despite the fact that in comparison with famous European manufacturers, mobile transport costs much less.

The fact that there are up to a billion people in the world who like to ride “with the breeze” testifies to many things, and that people are thinking about the environment and thus are fighting air pollution.

Negative consequences of car popularity

  • pollute air;
  • require significant financial investments, including for routine and planned repairs;
  • make a lot of noise;
  • spending a long time behind the wheel causes the development of certain diseases;
  • low mobility of the driver leads to the same problems.

These problems are not familiar to those who have chosen mobile transport. If it continues to be popularized, it will become the transport of the future, especially considering how quickly production is developing, how many new models and gadgets have been developed for it.

Excerpts from Chapter 6 of the Rules for Cyclists

The chapter spells out the rules that must be strictly observed when driving outside your own home, when the person sitting behind the wheel turns into a full-fledged participant in the road traffic.

What are the rules for cyclists?

The traffic rules (Chapter 6 “Requirements for drivers of mopeds and bicycles”) clearly regulate the behavior of cyclists who have left their home and find themselves on the roads.

Let's look at the basic rules outlined in this chapter:

6.1 Citizens who have reached the age of fourteen are allowed to ride bicycles on the roadway.

Children over 14 years of age, in accordance with the rules, can ride alone on the roads. Younger children are allowed to move only on sidewalks. And those under 7 years old can only ride under adult supervision.

6.2. The mobile transport in question must be equipped with light reflectors– this is another rule for a cyclist. The color of the reflector installed in front is white, the reflector mounted at the back is red, and the reflector on the sides is orange. The rules require that in addition to reflectors, there must be an audible signal.

6.3. If driving in conditions of limited visibility, in particular at night, the rules require the use of lights installed in front and behind, which will help identify the vehicle on the roadway.

6.4. The next rule: in order not to interfere with traffic participants when moving in a group, you need to drive in a chain, i.e. one after another. If a column is moving, the cyclists are divided into groups of 10 people each and move, keeping a distance of 80-100 meters between groups. According to the rules, the distance between the “drivers” themselves is maintained at least 1.5 meters. Compliance with this rule will help drivers of other vehicles move freely, avoiding traffic jams.

6.5. It is allowed to carry loads of such dimensions that do not interfere with the control of the bicycle. The rules allow the transportation of cargo on a trunk or a special trailer, but do not provide for the transportation of oversized cargo.

  • drive a vehicle that has a faulty signal, brakes, no lighting (in the dark), or in poor visibility;
  • You cannot drive on the roadway if there is a bike path nearby;
  • move on paths for pedestrians (except for children’s bicycles);
  • hold on to another vehicle when driving;
  • drive without holding the steering wheel or taking your feet off the pedals;
  • It is allowed to transport adults (children under 7 years old) on an additional seat, provided that
  • that the seat is equipped with footrests);
  • The rules for cyclists do not allow towing bicycles, mopeds, trailers (except as specified above).

Rules: where the vehicle is allowed to go

You are required to drive on the roadway (according to the rules) as close to the right shoulder as possible. This rule is often hindered by parked cars that need to be passed around, which is very risky from the point of view of the traffic moving behind and from the driver of the parked car, who can open the door in front of the cyclist without noticing his approach.

If a breakdown occurs during a trip, an injury occurs, or a person is simply tired and wants to walk, he turns into a pedestrian, even while walking with a vehicle. Now he must move according to the rules along the edge of the left shoulder - towards moving traffic, so that in case of danger, he can quickly react.

How is a bike lane designated according to the rules?

If there is a bike path, you only need to move along it.

Its presence is indicated by a road sign provided for by the rules:

If there is no sign, markings are applied to the bike path indicating the direction of movement (as stated by the rules).

If it is, then the rules prohibit cyclists from riding on the roadway. There are still few paths in our country, so cyclists travel along the same lines as trucks and cars, so the issue of personal safety is extremely relevant.

What is important to know to protect yourself on the roads

  • Riding on the roads is dangerous because cyclists may not be seen at night. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to wear brighter cycling clothing and equip your vehicle with reflective elements, as required by the rules for cyclists, section 6.2. The taillight must be turned on in accordance with paragraph 6.3 of the rules for cyclists. A bicycle light powered by a rechargeable battery or batteries is attached to the handlebars.
  • A front light will help you spot vehicles from afar and illuminate the way.
  • Often headlights have different functions: continuous glow, blinking.
  • In order not to risk turning back, equip your mobile vehicle with a rear-view mirror, attaching it to the steering wheel. This simple accessory will help you focus your attention on the road.
  • Another point of the rules aimed at preserving the health of the cyclist is the mandatory wearing of a helmet, which will protect the head in case of a fall, from which even an experienced driver is not insured. After all, circumstances do not always depend on his experience and skills.

Does a cyclist need a license?

Until now, this has not been required, but the State Duma has already raised this issue, to which the owners of the “iron horses” reacted ambiguously. Most responded negatively to this decision. But the measures were caused by a global violation of the rules, unwillingness to equip your vehicle accordingly, and neglect of safety rules - wearing reflective clothing and a helmet.

The license will help improve the culture of these drivers, as well as apply fines to them for violations. But they are not the only ones to blame for road accidents, so it would be advisable to start installing bicycle paths, about which there is no news yet.

When the law is adopted, it will be possible to move only with a certificate similar to a motorist’s license. But given the increased interest in bicycles, the introduction of compulsory training for obtaining a license may cause the demand for bicycles to fall.

The rules for cyclists include gestures that help determine what maneuver they will perform.

Hands act as car headlights:

  • when it is lifted to the right, there will be a right turn;
  • by raising his hand up, the driver will continue to move in a straight line;
  • Do not turn left - it is prohibited.

What to do if you can’t turn left. In this case, they drive to the nearest underground or overground passage and cross the road, dismounting. If you find it difficult to make signs with your hands, purchase an electronic system that indicates turns. Inform your colleagues on the roads about upcoming maneuvers in advance so that they can get their bearings in time.
