All the best about the people's car and more. Comparative test of Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla: credit history Which is better Focus 2 3

Focus II is a car manufactured by Ford. These cars are no longer produced and can only be purchased used. As a rule, there is a demand for these cars only among young guys who have recently graduated from driving school. Many call Focus " credit sickness" or " office plankton machine”, due to the fact that they are often bought on credit by low-income citizens.

The 2nd generation of Focus was produced from 2004-2012. The suspension design, which was truly amazing and reliable, was carried over from the first generation. In 2008, restyled cars with an updated design went on sale. There is nothing left from the first generation (the only exceptions are the engine and roof).

Safety

The second generation Focus is one of the safest cars. After all, according to Euro NCAR it has five out of five stars for passenger safety (35) and child safety (40), but pedestrian safety is much lower, and is only two stars out of five.

Advantages and benefits of Ford Focus 2

  1. Several body styles: four-door sedan, three-door and five-door hatchback;
  2. Interior: ergonomic, different colors depending on the configuration, good sound acoustics, roomy, informative and readable instrument panel, decent air conditioning quality, leather or fabric seat upholstery, comfortable lumbar and lateral support;
  3. Luggage compartment: the volume of the sedan is 466 liters of luggage, the hatchback is 281 liters, if you fold the seat backs, the located seats increase to 930 and 1145 liters, respectively, the loading height is low, the openings are wide;
  4. Large range of power plants: 5 gasoline engines and one turbocharged diesel;
  5. Low fuel consumption for a car equipped with a 1.4 engine - in the combined cycle is 6.6 liters per 100 km;
  6. Electronic injection, modernized ignition system, good dynamics of the two-liter engine;
  7. Power plants comply with a standard of at least Euro-4;
  8. Reliable steering;
  9. Long service life of automatic and manual transmissions;
  10. The ride is durable and comfortable;
  11. Good controllability;
  12. Maintenance costs are low;
  13. You can install non-original spare parts, of which there is a huge selection on the market.

Weaknesses of Ford Focus 2

  • Body;
  • Salon;
  • Electronics;
  • Engine;
  • Transmission;
  • Suspension.

The first thing you should look at when buying is the body. You should immediately understand that the car is quite old, and that the factory paint has faded somewhere, and the body and doors may be rusty, the interior trim will be worn out, and the sills and bumpers will have operational damage. But still, Ford has other disadvantages in the body that you need to be aware of and fix them immediately after purchase. Ford Focus 2 does not like Russian winters, which is why the Focus has frequent breakdowns:

1) Problem with locks. The most important thing is that with a cylinder for opening the hood (a feature of the Ford Focus of both the 1st and 2nd generations is opening the hood with a key), the lock turns sour. There are two ways to fix all this: apply penetrating lubricant to the lock cover (where the emblem is) or replace the lock from plastic to metal, which will fit well on a Ford Mondeo.

2) Sometimes there are “jambs” with incorrect operation of the central locking, which is responsible not only for locking the door itself, but also for the gas tank flap.

3) Problems with the chrome coating, which is supposed to make the car more beautiful, but after several winters, rust begins to appear in the place between the metal and chrome, which no longer makes the car beautiful.

4) If your car is a hatchback or sedan, then you should regularly check the license plate lights, because These body types have problems with the wires of this unit, which becomes corroded due to moisture.

5) Malfunctions with windshield washers, which consists in the fact that the windshield washer hoses fly out of their mountings and flood the engine.

Overall, the Ford's interior is not bad. The quality of the fabric upholstery is excellent, it withstands the dry cleaning process remarkably well and is wear-resistant, but after a few years of use the interior begins to noticeably creak.

The most expensive electronic item that often fails is heated seats, for which you will have to pay a considerable amount of money. Problems often occur with the stove, the motor of which may fail. Also, at approximately 50 thousand km, the resistor breaks, accompanied by a not strong, but unpleasant whistle. The heat sensor in the cabin also suffers, but only in versions with cruise control. Also, due to Russian winters, the heating threads of the side mirrors suffer. In restyled cars it is quite difficult to change the bulbs in the headlights, since to do this you have to take out the entire headlight.

Focus has four engine options: 1.4; 1.6; 1.8; 2.0 liters. Let's look at each one separately:

1) 1.4 liter engines, by themselves, are durable and reliable (if you regularly change the oil and filter in them), but it is better to install a manual in the configuration, because it definitely won’t go with an automatic transmission. But one problem arises from this - due to the fact that the engine always spins at high speeds (it will not run at low speeds, because it has little power), the engine's life is quickly depleted. Therefore, when purchasing a car from third or more hands, you should think carefully, because there is a risk of getting the engine overhauled;

2) 1.6 liters (100 hp) - this engine, like the 1.4, is considered durable and reliable (also don’t forget to change consumables). Its main advantage is its simplicity of design, so you can repair the engine yourself. But today the engine power is very low. And if you take it together with an automatic, then you definitely won’t have enough dynamics.

1.6 liter (115 hp) - this engine model will be better than its predecessor 100 hp engine, and you can already drive with an automatic transmission with almost the same gas consumption. It is distinguished only by the added variable valve timing system, both on the intake and exhaust shafts. This motor has a problem with the phase shifter clutch, which quickly "runs out", but on later and improved models this problem occurs less frequently.

3) The 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines are almost identical in design and their problems are also similar. The service life of such motors is 350 thousand km. What needs to be changed? The most important thing is the timing chain (200 thousand km), and the gasket between the head and the block (100 thousand km), otherwise oil loss from the engine begins. You also need to frequently monitor the tightening of the bolts, otherwise they will unscrew due to vibrations.

This car has three transmission options, and each has its own pros and cons, let's look at each:

1) The IB5 manual transmission is not very good, it has a lot of problems and they are not very pleasant. The most common is second gear overshoot. All this happens due to weak synchronizers. But due to the fact that the gearbox will often work at full capacity, the pinion axis in the differential may burst, and all these actions will subsequently lead to a hole in the crankcase, the repair of which will be expensive. There are also problems with the input shaft bearing; if you hear a hum from the gearbox, then run to the service center, because... This will not lead to good consequences, but only to difficult and expensive repairs.

2) The MTX75 manual transmission gives more love and hope because it is more durable. Its disadvantages are the oil seals and shift rod seals, but this is all easy to do. It is also better to monitor the oil; it should not be at a minimum, otherwise the shafts and gear rims quickly wear out and become unusable. You also need to monitor the release bearing, which is very weak and wears out after 50 thousand km.

3) The 4F27E automatic transmission is very reliable, because it has been installed on cars since 1980, and all the bugs in it have long been corrected, which is why this automatic transmission is as reliable as a tank. Only one thing spoils the picture - after 55 thousand km. It is advisable to change the valve body and also need to replace the pressure regulator solenoids.

As I said before, the Focus has an excellent suspension, which was inherited from the first generation. The suspension is reliable and rarely breaks, all this is due to the excellent tuning of the independent chassis, but still some elements fail and need to be replaced. The most basic, short-lived elements:

  1. Support bearings of struts. To 40-70 thousand km. They become unusable and require replacement. The wheel bearing, which only comes complete with the hub, also requires attention.
  2. After 40 thousand, a quiet knock may appear, which means that the stabilizer struts have become unusable.
  3. At 80-110 thousand kilometers you will need to change the bushings and with them: ball joints, levers and silent blocks. After all this, you will need to pay attention to the shock absorbers.

After replacing these parts, your suspension will be as beautiful as the car that came off the production line.

In conclusion, about the shortcomings of the 2nd generation Ford Focus.

Our “office plankton machine” is not even bad. For a simple guy, it is quite suitable, although it has some disadvantages, but if you follow these disadvantages, then everything will be fine. Of course, you won’t be able to buy a new car, but when buying second-hand, you need to check all the listed weak points.

P.S.: Dear car owners, if you have noticed systematic breakdowns of any parts or units of this model, please report it in the comments below.

Weaknesses, advantages and main disadvantages of a used Ford Focus 2 was last modified: March 2, 2019 by Administrator

Ford Focus is a very popular model that is loved and known by many car enthusiasts around the world. To date, three generations have been produced, each of which was better than the previous one. Is it really? You can often come across the question, which is better, Focus 2 or Focus 3? Those wishing to purchase a used car want to know the answer to this question and make the right choice. To find out which generation is better, we compare:

First you need to note the appearance.

The third generation of the model has become noticeably fresher and more modern. The body is made using smooth lines, while the second generation had a square shape. However, even today, some car enthusiasts like the design of Focus Two more. This is a subjective question, so let's move on to the suspension. In this regard, the comparison showed that the cars are almost identical. The front has a traditional MacPherson strut, and the rear has a multi-link suspension. The only difference is that on the third generation they installed different springs, which made the car more rigid.

The interior of the third Focus looks more modern and better made. This lies both in the quality of finishing materials and in equipment. Now the cabin has a high-quality multimedia system and various other options are available.

Thus, the number of possible options on Focus 3 is also much higher. Of course, you have to pay for comfort. If you want to choose a third-generation model with the maximum configuration, then you should be prepared to pay a hefty sum for it. As for ergonomics, there are no questions here. Both the second and third generations have properly organized space. Moreover, Focus 2 may be more preferable due to its simplicity.

When it comes to space inside the car, the cars are also very similar. Noise insulation is at the same level. Therefore, on both the second and third generations, additional sizing will not hurt. It is noteworthy that squeaks traditionally appear in the car interior after 50-100 thousand kilometers.

Technical part

Focus Three is no longer equipped with a 1.4-liter engine, which was considered minimal and was installed on the basic configuration. As with the second generation, the most popular are 2 1.6-liter engines - 105 and 125 liters. With. If we talk about the design, the power units are practically no different from each other. However, increasing power was made possible by using different settings of the control unit and installing different firmware. If desired, you can increase the power yourself even more by performing chip tuning. The Ford Focus 2 was equipped with a 1.8 liter engine, but it was abandoned in the third generation. This unit was considered quite problematic, and therefore a solution was inevitable.

If we talk about the transmission, then both the second and third Focus were equipped with fairly high-quality mechanics. As for the robot that was equipped with the third generation, it cannot be called the most reliable.

Many owners were faced with the fact that when switching there were noticeable jerks, twitchings, etc. In general, in terms of technical aspects, both generations are quite similar to each other.

Summarizing

The third generation has been in production for more than 6 years. During this time, not all car enthusiasts have yet received an answer to the question of why this generation is better than the second generation. Of course, there are a number of advantages, which include the fact that the car is fresher and more modern.

However, it is impossible to say unequivocally that Focus 3 is better in everything, and it has many advantages.

The second generation was loved by car owners due to its unpretentiousness, cheapness and reliability. It was a really great option for people who needed an affordable car for every day use. With the advent of the third Focus, the exterior and interior of the car became brighter, but for the money competitors offered more equipped models, which could not but call into question the popularity of the car. Today, when choosing a third or second Focus, you need to evaluate the condition of each specific instance, as well as the price tag, since this is one of the key factors.

Konstantin Yakubov: Ford Focus II, 2008, 1.8 l, manual, Ghia, mileage 47,000 km

The design is pleasant, although the rear of the “third” Focus hatchback reminds me of the KIA-Sid. Finally they thought of covering the sills with plastic and removed the hood lock from under the emblem! And they realized that symmetry is not only beautiful, but also correct: two reversing lights and a pair of fog lights are better than one copy of both. The mirrors in the visors are more solid, they have built-in lighting - a small thing, but nice. You can also lock all doors with a button on the console.

But inside there is no longer the same freedom as before. Safety, for the sake of which everything was probably started, is an important matter, but you still want to move! There is less space in the back, I also like the driver's seat better in its predecessor. The mirrors are no better than before - with a dead zone where a motorcyclist riding between the rows can easily disappear. The steering wheel is overloaded with buttons; some of the functions should have been transferred to the steering column switches. The headlight switch is located inconveniently: it is tilted towards the floor - you can’t see it while driving. You can’t just get into the glove compartment: the front passenger’s knees prevent the lid from opening. The glossy panel of the radio instantly becomes captivated.

I don’t like the complication of the design, which inevitably leads to higher prices. Two large wipers with separate motors, also stepper ones, are, of course, cool, but I don’t think that visibility in the rain has improved dramatically. I continue: the headrests are no longer removable, but a bunch of extra light bulbs and lights have appeared. Why all this abundance of light?

But the 1.6-liter engine does not detonate when starting, like my 1.8. But at the same time, 125 “new” forces are somehow liquid and do not pull evenly throughout the entire range. But I really liked the box, the switching on is soft and clear.

In general, the impression is ambivalent. If earlier the choice of “Focus” was obvious to me, now I’ll look around, fortunately the competitors are not asleep.

Tatyana Kodachenko: Ford Focus II, 2007, 2.0 l, manual, Ghia, mileage 73,000 km

My assessment is from a passenger's point of view. We bought the car when our daughter was already born. At the nursery, I placed her with a friend of mine, at least half an hour away by car. My husband and I know that the safest place for a child is the seat behind the driver. But if the baby does not look forward, he will begin to rock.

Therefore, for many years, the seat on the back left became mine. We sit our daughter next to her, on the right, lower the back of the front seat and remove the headrest. In the new Focus this number will not work - the headrests are made non-removable.

I have traveled a lot in the backseat of the “second” car: a trip to Switzerland, two trips to the Baltics, and I can’t count the trips to the Moscow region. My husband's height is two meters without a couple of centimeters. When he adjusts the seat for himself, the passenger has about fifteen centimeters of legroom left. Several times I had to travel for ten hours or longer, but I sat behind him quite comfortably, despite the fact that there was always something stuck in the pocket of the chair: maps, magazines, guidebooks. All this does not rest on your feet - there is still room left!

When I climbed into the new Focus, and my husband habitually adjusted the chair to fit himself, the lower part of the back immediately crashed into my legs. There is space in front of the knees, but the chair is curved in some kind of arc, so the knees are comfortable, but the position of the feet cannot be changed. Without this, you can’t sit for 40 minutes, let alone several hours!

Of course, I liked a lot. For example, shorter rear doors. On our model they are noticeably wider, and usually, trying not to hit the car standing next to me, I do not open the door completely. I also like the appearance of the new hatchback, especially the rear three-quarter view! But still, as a family car, the “third” Focus is perhaps a bit cramped.

Andrey Sidorov: Ford Focus II, 2008, automatic, Ghia, mileage 30,000 km

When the sun is low on the horizon, a fairly noticeable rainbow plays on the windshield. Not to say that it is too disturbing - perhaps it is even funny to watch the play of light against the background of the road. The air vent grille and the instrument panel visor are reflected in the same glass. But in the glove compartment I found a USB connector, which was missing before.

Where my Focus has turn signals in the headlights, the new one has side light sections. Very comfortably! They shine brightly and where they need to be. They are activated even when the steering wheel is turned slightly, approximately 15°. When you drive forward, the side you are turning to lights up; back - the opposite way, so as not to blow someone away with your wing.

I have not yet come across a more practical parking sensor than on the new Focus. An informative screen, an unobtrusive squeak, four zones in front and behind, extending to the sides.

The electronic gas pedal is very correct. It seems that its task is not to control the supply of gasoline, but to communicate to the “brains” the driver’s intention to accelerate. And they will decide how to do this with minimal damage to the environment. Up to 2000 rpm the car frankly stalls, then, up to the limiter, it goes normally, but still there is no expected acceleration. You need to constantly turn the engine and click through the gears. I can’t say that it annoyed me very much - it’s a matter of habit.

The gearshift timing indicator will probably be useful for someone. To me, this is a toy. After 2000 rpm, if the gas is not in the floor, the arrow lights up: go to higher. But she doesn’t know what my plan is! For example, I’m driving in fourth, I bump into a truck, and when I let off the gas, I’m waiting for the moment to overtake and possibly switch to third. And electronics are hammering your brain: give it a fifth, otherwise you’ll burn an extra gram of gasoline!

By the way, about expense. I took a car with an average consumption on the trip computer of 11.2 l/100 km. After 400 km of suburban highways, it slipped to 10.1 liters. If you consciously save, you can keep it to 8–8.5 liters (and with the air conditioning on).

The car handles roughly like its predecessor, the Focus, but goes a little smoother. When driving sharply off a wide speed bump, the front end makes a noticeable knock.

In the rain, the rear window gets noticeably less splashed.

The trunk shelf has become stiffer, although not by much. In my Ford it bends even under its own weight. If you are going to install a roof rack, then keep in mind: now it is only suitable with supports on the roof - they would not wipe the paint. The previous model is more practical: it has nuts for the struts covered with plugs.

Summary? I definitely liked the car! For complete happiness, I would like a more powerful engine, 140-150 normal “horses”, and not these strangled ones. And the size of wheels from 16 inches raises questions (of course, if you don’t plan to participate in races).

Mikhail Gzovsky, testing editor

A comparative test of the Focus will come later, but for now we are giving ourselves over only to emotions and first impressions. The engine was a revelation for me. If I had not seen with my own eyes the registration certificate with the power recorded on it, I would never have believed in 125 hp.

The new Focus with a 1.6-liter engine is comfortable to take off - the car is ready to start from idle. But if you then push the pedal to the floor, it won’t move! The engine begins to actively respond only from 3500 rpm; for more or less active driving it will have to be cranked. The reason is probably in the “brains” designed to fit the engine within the Euro-5 framework and reduce fuel consumption.

I was surprised by the ambiguity of the interior. Cozy, beautiful, solid, but, alas, cramped. I feel like I’m in a car of a lower class: from the driver’s seat I’m pushing my neighbor with my elbow, sitting “behind me” is not easy. Fortunately, the suspension is pleasing: with even better ride quality and energy efficiency. A real breakthrough is a noticeable reduction in noise and vibration.

Let's see what other impressions our future Focus will leave from the first production batch of the Vsevolozhsk assembly (now we were filming a sample that arrived from Germany).

WHAT HOW MUCH

The first “tricks” of the new generation will roll off the assembly line in Vsevolozhsk in August. These will be five-door hatchbacks. The release of sedans is scheduled for September, station wagons will appear only at the beginning of next year. But three-door hatchbacks disappeared from the lineup forever.

In similar configurations compared to its predecessors, the new product is more expensive by an average of 30,000–80,000 rubles. The final difference depends on the engine. Sometimes the rise in price is a consequence of better energy availability. For example, the basic Focus III is 33,000 rubles more expensive than the second one, but under its hood, instead of a weak 1.4-liter 80-horsepower engine, it has a 105-horsepower 1.6-liter engine.

So, to replace the old gasoline engines of 1.4 (80 hp), 1.6 (100 and 115 hp), 1.8 (125 hp) and 2.0 l (145 l .hp) came units of the Duratec Ti-VCT family with a volume of 1.6 liters - 105 and 125 hp, as well as a 2-liter 150 hp Duratec GDI. They are equipped with a variable valve timing system, the most powerful with direct fuel injection. The 1.8 liter (115 hp) diesel engine gave way to its 2-liter (140 hp) counterpart. The base transmission is a 5-speed manual. All but the weakest engines can now be mated to the PowerShift robotic transmission.

Four configurations are offered. The initial “Ambient” (from 499,000 rubles) with front airbags, ABS, electric mirrors and front windows, central locking, 15-inch wheels, etc. is in many ways similar to the previous basic “Limited Edition” (from 466,000 rubles ). You have to pay extra for air conditioning and music, but previously it was cheaper - 25,900 rubles versus 39,200.

In the next version, “Trend” (from 581,500 rubles), these options are already standard, heated mirrors and 16-inch steel wheels are added. By the way, in the similar previous version “Comfort” (from 522,000 rubles), you had to pay separately for “music” - at least 11,900 rubles. The “Trend Sport” package (from 640,000 rubles) is equipped with side airbags, rear electric windows, fog lights, alloy wheels, sports front seats, Premium console trim, etc.

But the Focus II, in a similar priced Titanium version (from 612,000 rubles), also had light and rain sensors. Now they are gone, as well as auto-dimming rear-view mirrors, but there is an ESP stabilization system with an EBA emergency braking assistance function. Titanium is now the most expensive Focus (from 685,500 rubles). Here you will get rain and light sensors, plus dual-zone climate control, a hill start assist system, and a push-button engine start. New options include parking assistant, blind spot monitoring, and more.

The color palette of the new Focus consists of ten shades (previously limited to six). For metallic - an additional payment of 10,000 rubles.

Ford Focus II, Ford Focus III: Two by three Ford Focus II, Ford Focus III: Two by three

When choosing a new car, car owners often ask the question: which is better - the Ford Focus or the latest generation Kia Rio? It is important to understand that the third Focus is a car of a higher class and belongs to the C+ segment. But the new Kia also has some tricks up its sleeve, such as a spacious trunk and a lower cost for rich trim levels. By the way, the characteristics given below are also valid when choosing between the Ford Focus 2 or the Kia Rio of the previous generation.

Brief description of Kia Rio

Korean engineers took into account all the features of European thinking and created a car that was able to gain a large number of fans. The only peculiarity is the difference between the versions for the American, European and Russian consumers. The difference lies in different bumpers and headlight shapes, color schemes, engine range and suspension settings.

The version for Russia boasts good ground clearance, a tuned suspension and a large luggage compartment volume. Cars are assembled at a modern plant in St. Petersburg.

Brief description of Ford Focus

Focus is very popular in Russia, not only among ordinary drivers. Sedans can often be found in the livery of traffic police departments or other law enforcement agencies. The Russian assembly in Vsevolozhsk not only does not degrade the quality of the car, but also adds several pleasant options in the form of a battery with increased capacity and a reinforced starter. This allows you to start the engine without problems even in severe frosts.

Exterior Kia

Which is better - Ford Focus or Kia Rio? The exterior of the “Korean” is more youthful and consists of many chrome elements throughout the body. There were also LED lights. You can choose a body: sedan, station wagon or hatchback.

The front part is made in accordance with all modern standards: a large radiator grille with small cells and optics with built-in lenses that can change the height of the light beam. The windshield smoothly flows into the hood with developed ribs. The bumper contains not only built-in fog lights, but also LED running lights that turn on automatically.

In profile, the sedan looks balanced and expensive. The roofline follows the curve of the side glazing, which has a chrome trim at the bottom. The side of the body boasts pronounced aerodynamic lines stamped on the fenders and doors. The mirrors are painted in the main color and are equipped with a heating system and electrical adjustment from the interior. Aluminum wheel design may vary depending on trim level. The stern is not innovative and consists of LED lights and a bumper with built-in reflectors.

Ford exterior

The front of the Focus is very reminiscent of the Aston Martin, which was previously owned by Ford. The C-Class is available in sedan, hatchback and station wagon body styles.

The hood consists of pronounced ribs on the sides and in the center. The optics have a predatory squint and are equipped with LEDs, lensed xenon and high-pressure nozzles to remove dirt. The radiator grille is made of long horizontal elements coated with chrome. The manufacturer's badge is located just above the radiator grille, just below the hood line. The complex-shaped bumper is painted in body color and is equipped with an additional protective cover made of black plastic. The fog lights, which now have a chrome trim, also remain in their usual place.

In profile, the large rims immediately catch your eye, behind which you can see the disc brakes. A distinct rib stamp can be found on the fenders and doors, adding to the car's individuality. The side mirrors are equipped with a turn signal and electrical adjustments. There was also the option of heating the mirror element. The threshold is securely covered with black plastic protection.

The rear of the hatchback and station wagon is equipped with a powerful roof antenna and a glass cleaning brush. There is also a fashionable spoiler that continues the roof line. The bumper is made in a classic style and is additionally equipped with reflectors.

Which is better: Ford Focus or Kia Rio - it’s difficult to compare in terms of appearance. Both cars have a stylish design and modern solutions.

Kia interior

The Korean car boasts a bright instrument panel and stylish lighting for all keys in the cabin. The steering wheel is covered with genuine leather, and the multimedia system control keys are built into the rays.

The “Korean” salon can be called classic. The design of the instrument panel in the form of deep wells makes it easier to read information, and the screen has good detail. The main advantage of the Kia sedan is the luggage compartment. The capacity is amazing - 500 liters, while the Focus has an obscene 375.

The answer to the question of which is better: Ford Focus or Kia Rio in terms of luggage compartment is unequivocal - Kia.

Ford interior

When comparing the Ford Focus and Kia Rio in terms of interior design, Ford definitely wins. “American” belongs to class C+ and is equipped not only with a large number of options, but also with high-quality plastic with an excellent fit.

The steering wheel is covered with genuine leather. The sports uniform allows you to choose a comfortable position for your hands when driving. The side beams have sections with keys for controlling the multimedia system. The instrument panel is made in a classic arrow style, the LED backlight is soft and does not irritate the eyes. The on-board computer display is colorful and has all the necessary information about the car.

The center console has a large 8-inch display with a navigation system, a USB slot and Bluetooth connectivity technology. The dual-zone climate control control keys are reminiscent of Volvo cars. The gear selector lever is framed in a chrome frame and installed in a fairly convenient place.

The seats are upholstered in leather and equipped with an extended adjustment system. The driver's back or lower back will not get tired even during a long trip. The central armrest is wide and contains a built-in drawer for small items. The back row is equipped with a comfortable sofa with an orthopedic backrest. Air ducts from the climate control are located at the feet of passengers to maintain optimal temperature in winter. The trunk turned out to be modest. The volume in the sedan is only 375 liters.

If we compare the Ford Focus and Kia Rio in terms of finishing materials and general equipment, then the first place should be given to the Focus, but in terms of luggage compartment the sedan noticeably loses.

Technical characteristics of the Ford Focus

Buyers mainly choose the Focus with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine, which produces 85, 105 or 125 horsepower, depending on the configuration. A 1.5-liter turbocharged unit with a 6-speed automatic transmission is also available. The maximum stated power is 150 horsepower, and the speed is limited to 208 km/h. Consumption on all power plants does not go beyond 7 liters in mixed mode.

Technical characteristics of Kia Rio

The “Korean” received two engines: 1.4 and 1.6 liters. The 1.4-liter unit develops power of 107 horsepower. Equipped with a manual or automatic 4-speed transmission. The 1.6-liter engine produces 123 horsepower and is equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission or manual transmission. Fuel consumption is stated at 6.2 liters in mixed mode, and the maximum speed is 190 km/h.

The question of which is better: Ford Focus or Kia Rio in terms of power plants is difficult to answer. The cars have good consumption figures and a sufficient amount of horsepower under the hood.

Difference between options and prices

The cars are equipped with all modern equipment and useful options. But the Focus is ahead of its rival in the number of SRS airbags (6 versus 8) and in the total number of available options.

Some positions presented only in Focus:

  • Tire pressure sensors.
  • Reversing camera.
  • Vehicle monitoring system in the “dead zone”.
  • Electric driver's seat.
  • Autonomous engine heater.
  • Automatic parking system.

The listed options cannot be installed in the Kia Rio.

Due to its higher class and set of options, Ford is on average 150,000-200,000 rubles more expensive than Kia. With average equipment, Rio will cost the buyer 850,000 rubles, and Focus - 985,000 rubles.

When choosing between a Kia Rio or a Ford Focus 3, Ford wins the comparison due to the wider number of available options.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of the Focus include an advanced chassis, better quality finishing materials and sufficient sound insulation. Trunk volume is a weak point of the American sedan, as is the higher cost.

“Korean” turned out to be balanced and unpretentious. The final cost of the car is significantly lower than the “American” one, but it also has fewer options. The only disadvantages include lower quality interior materials and insufficient space for rear passengers.

In this article we will try to find out which is better: Ford Focus or Kia Rio. In comparison, we will rely on the characteristics of the last two generations of each of these cars.

Before you start comparing, it should be noted that the machines being compared belong to different classes. Thus, Focus is a typical representative of the C-class, and Rio is positioned as a B+ class sedan. The most compelling argument in favor of interest in such a comparison is, I think, the similar cost. For example, Focus 3 now costs from 707 thousand rubles from official dealers, and the price tag for Rio 2017 model year starts from 669 thousand rubles. The difference, as you can see, is small.

Body

Dimensions

Let's start, as usual, with body dimensions.

Ford Focus 3 has a length of 4.538 m, a width of 1.823 m, a height of 1.468 m, and Focus 2 – 4.481 m / 1.839 m / 1.497 m, respectively. The updated sedan has increased slightly in length, but has become narrower and lower. The size of the database has remained almost unchanged: 2.648 for the new version versus 2.64 for the old one.

The length of the new Kia Rio 2017 is 4.4 m, width is 1.74 m, and height is 1.47 m. The previous generation of the Korean sedan had the following dimensions: length 4.366 m, width 1.72 m, height 1.455 m. As you can see , the fourth generation became longer, slightly wider and taller. In terms of length, the main change is an increase in the wheelbase from 2.57 to 2.6 m.

What do these numbers tell us? Here's what: the length of the latest Focus is almost 25 cm (!) longer than the length of the new Rio. The width of the first is almost 10 cm larger than the second, which is also significant, I think. The height of the Ford is not much larger: only 2 cm, and the length of the base is 4 cm. In principle, with proper layout, even such a small difference can be turned into a big advantage. Next, let's see if the designers were able to implement this. In the meantime, no one gets a point - I don’t see the point in evaluating dry numbers.

Appearance

Comparing appearance is much more interesting than the size of cars.

Look at Focus. Personally, it seems to me that the latest version (and this is a restyling of the third generation) looks like a remnant.

In my opinion, the restyled Ford Focus 2 looks even more interesting, at least from the front.

In contrast, Rio is much cuter. Look at the latest version: both the bow and stern have a very attractive modern design.

The same can be said about the Kia Rio 3: the creation of Peter Schreyer was to the taste of hundreds of thousands of buyers.

In the battle of exterior designs, the “Korean” definitely wins. The score is 0-1 in his favor.

Main sores

The Korean car, as evidenced by owner reviews, does not have a high-quality paintwork. This is especially noticeable on hoods - chips and cracks appear quite quickly.

But the bottom, as the automaker claims, is completely galvanized. Therefore, the body warranty is 5 years!

The problem with the “American”, assembled at the plant in Vsevolozhsk near St. Petersburg, is the crooked hands of the assemblers or insufficiently developed assembly technology. Very often, already in five-year-old cars, the rear arches, the junctions of the body with the rear bumper and, sometimes, the trunk lid, begin to rot or rot with all their might.

In theory, the body seems to be galvanized. Why this happens is not exactly clear. I suspect that it is due to the integrity of the paint layer being damaged during assembly.

In addition, there are quite a lot of cars with different gaps between body panels. Well, this is a real jamb. The buyer should be advised to inspect the car more carefully when purchasing.

I think the Focus has more problems with its body, so Rio gets the point again. The score is 0-2.

Interior

Design

The interior design of the cars being compared is, as they say, an acquired taste. For example, I prefer the interior of the Ford Focus, both the second and third generations. The second generation is probably even bigger – the design is calm and pleasing to the eye.

Unlike the previous generation, the interior design of the third Focus is somehow expressive, trying to look sporty with all its lines.

In principle, I don’t see anything wrong with this, but in this case, it seems that the designers were not completely able to harmonize their ideas in the material. But oh well. Surely, those who like this style and who do not think much about high matters are in the majority.

Compared to the Ford sedan, the interior of the Kia Rio 4, in my opinion, looks simpler. However, this does not mean that it is unpleasant for the eye. You can feel the difference in classes.

Rio of the previous version was no exception. Everything is fine, maybe even a little interesting, but not as good as a competitor from a higher class.

In general, I like the Focus better in terms of interior design. Points for him. The score is 1-2.

Quality of materials

The materials used to decorate the Korean car are of quite high quality for its class. They look soft, but in reality they are hard plastic. Even in the maximum configuration. Only the places where the elbow rests on the door handle are made soft.

The rear of the cabin is always made of cheaper materials. Thus, it becomes clear that the Kia Rio focuses on the front passengers.

Ford Focus receives more expensive interior materials with each update. Currently, high quality soft plastic is used. According to this parameter, this car is definitely ahead. The score was level, 2-2.

Ergonomics

The Ford Focus 2 has excellent ergonomics in the front row: there are a ton of adjustments for the front seats, resulting in a comfortable fit for people of almost any height and build, a large number of niches, a huge glove compartment, and a convenient location of the controls. The instruments are readable very well. As an option, at one time, it was possible to get a heated and cooled glove compartment.

Ford Focus 3 lowered the bar a bit. There are a number of complaints regarding the ergonomics of the front row. The seats are very comfortable, the seating position is comfortable, the tidy is excellent - the problem lies elsewhere. There are just some non-critical little things that have not been finalized. For example, in the pre-restyling version, the center console is a kind of “push-button archaism”, which is definitely uncomfortable to use to the touch.

Or, for example, such a solution as a sporty wide dashboard. Due to its unreasonable width, it will interfere with large drivers, putting pressure on the right leg. Inconvenient.

Both the second and third Focus have “humiliation” for rear row passengers. Here you have a door that doesn’t swing wide enough, a low opening, and little space for their feet.

On long trips, only children or small adults will feel comfortable here. By the way, in the second generation there are not even pockets in the rear doors. Keep everything in your pockets, it's called.

In the Kia Rio, the front seats are not as comfortable as those of the “American”; there is no lumbar support, and the seats are short. The seating position is so-so, for short trips – the back and legs get tired. Moreover, it seems that the situation has not changed, because the previous Rio had the same thing.

The glove compartment is very small – just like a “glove box”. But we are pleased with the large number of cup holders and various niches.

The instrument panel is easy to read, no complaints here.

In the new Kia Rio there is not enough rear space for adults, although a little more than in the previous generation model. But such a detail as the height of the tunnel (for the exhaust gas pipe) in the floor is one of the lowest among all competitors. This means there is a little more legroom for rear passengers.

I don’t even know who to call the best in terms of ergonomics. Focuses are definitely more comfortable in front, but Rio is more balanced in terms of attitude towards everyone who gets into the car. Therefore, think for yourself what is more important to you. If you mostly travel in splendid isolation, then you should definitely opt for the first option, and if you are always with your family, then, I think, the second.

Soundproofing and something else

Until 2014, the Ford Focus had average quality sound insulation. After restyling, the situation improved significantly - the car received high-quality sound insulation. In comparison, the Kia Rio's noise is generally useless. This becomes especially annoying at speeds above 100 km/h: the main noise comes from the arches, and external treatment with liquid noise-vibration insulation does not help. By the way, an interesting feature: the “Korean” does not have hood soundproofing, even in the maximum configuration. For noise reduction I give a point to the “American”. The score is 3-2.

In the second Focus, the strange hood opening system, which migrated here from its ancestors, is annoying. I wonder what the designers were guided by when they decided that the hood should be opened from the outside with a key? And the fourth Rio has a delicate situation with the trunk, in the case when you have a version with keyless access to the car. The idea, of course, is not bad in itself - to open the trunk automatically if the owner, with full bags in both hands, stands next to the trunk for more than 3 seconds. But in practice, if he stands there just like that, talking, for example, with someone, then the trunk also opens. This is somehow not very correct, I think.

Technical and operational characteristics

Focus 2 had at its disposal 2 types of transmissions: “mechanics” and the classic “automatic”. For Focus 3, instead of an automatic transmission, the designers offered a robotic PowerShift, which became famous for its unreliability.

Rio was, is, and, I hope, will continue to be equipped, in addition to a manual transmission, with a traditional torque converter automatic transmission. In this regard, Rio is preferable (for me personally, of course). Therefore, a point in favor of the Korean sedan. The score is 3-3.

But the Ford Focus, before and now, has benchmark handling for its class. The Kia Rio, although good, is clearly not up to its level. The first has an energy-intensive suspension that “swallows” everything in its path and, thereby, gives comfort. The second suspension is not energy-intensive enough, this is especially noticeable at high speeds - it is too rigid, as a result of which all impacts are transferred to the body. In this regard, Focus is the best, so it gets a point. The score is 4-3.

Summarizing

Comparing cars of different (even close) classes is not an easy task. I hope you appreciate my efforts . For myself, I decided that if I had a choice of what to buy: a Ford Focus or a Kia Rio, then I would probably take the Rio. Even though he lost on points set by me. I'll explain why. I like the appearance of the Rio better, I’m not particularly picky about the seating position, I often carry rear passengers, the car has a 5-year warranty. You can put up with the rest or choose the car that best suits your needs.

In general, something like this. I hope that with my comparison I have answered most of the questions that arise in your head. At least he didn't create new ones.
