Ground clearance of the Hyundai Creta is a fairly popular topic among domestic owners of the Korean crossover. It would seem why so much attention is paid to not the most important aspect of the car. The fact is that the Creta is an intermediate link between two segments, and therefore the issue of ground clearance causes a lot of controversy. Official manufacturers position the Creta as a crossover, but the design features of the car lead one to think that it is an SUV. In today's article we will discuss the ground clearance of the Hyundai Creta and try to understand this controversial issue.
Features of Creta ground clearance
The ride height of a crossover depends on the type of wheels it is equipped with. When using standard 16-17-inch wheels, the ground clearance is 190 mm. The main difference between the SUV and other representatives of the class is that the lowest point of the body is the crankcase protection.
Fortunately for car enthusiasts, Korean developers paid special attention to protecting components and elements that risk coming into contact with the road surface. Manufacturers managed to achieve this ground clearance by installing independent suspension and the complete absence of overhangs. Elements such as the gearbox, transmission and power unit are located in special compartments of the body.
It is worth noting that initially, the Korean company planned to produce exclusively all-wheel drive vehicles. But, due to certain circumstances, it was decided to start producing a modification with front-wheel drive. There is no difference in ground clearance between both versions of the crossover.
We already said above that the ground clearance of the Hyundai Creta is 190 mm. If we also add the overhang dimensions of 840 mm, we get a luxurious car that can easily overcome even the most difficult sections of the road. As practice shows, for the conditions of Russian roads, this ground clearance indicator is more than enough.
If we compare with the competitors of the Korean crossover, their ground clearance ranges from 170-200 mm. From this we can conclude that Creta is among the leaders in this aspect. For comparison, the “Korean” is only 5 mm inferior to the Russian X-Ray SUV.

Judging by the test drives of the crossover and reviews from owners, the standard ground clearance is quite enough to overcome deep puddles, snowy areas or swamps. The car can be successfully operated on any type of road surface thanks to minimal overhangs and a short wheelbase.
When information appeared that the Creta would receive a ground clearance of 190 mm, this pleased domestic motorists. There are no specific requirements for this aspect of the car and, usually, the success of the engineers' decision is determined during operation. But in this case it was not so - it was immediately clear that the Greta’s ground clearance is the most optimal for Russian roads. Add here another 17-inch “shoe” and even a meter of snow will not stop the “Korean”.
Considering the identical ground clearance indicators, experts advise choosing the all-wheel drive version of the crossover, which in terms of characteristics is definitely not inferior to the average SUV.
At the front of the body there are special linings that protect important elements of the car.
The developers claim that they do not affect the ground clearance in any way, but some motorists claim that after dismantling them, they were able to gain 40 mm. But we do not recommend doing this, since such intervention can negatively affect the technical condition of the car.
Despite the high clearance, the Greta is equipped with 16 and 17-inch tires. According to experts, manufacturers should have equipped the crossover with wheels of larger diameter, but it’s not for us to judge. If you do not take into account the tire size, the maximum off-road clearance is 145 mm - a fairly good result.

Considering the resourcefulness of Russians, it is not surprising that domestic Greta owners are trying in every possible way to improve the car’s performance. One such improvement is increased clearance. This is not so difficult to do - just replace the springs and shock absorbers, and in some cases, the wheels.
Experts identify three main methods for changing the clearance of the Hyundai Greta:
- The easiest way is to install larger tires.
- Installation of special stands in the crossover suspension.
- Installation of a new suspension with increased sizes of springs and shock absorbers.
As practice shows, any of these methods can increase the clearance by 50 mm. But even taking this into account, experts do not recommend interfering with the suspension design, as this may negatively affect the performance of the element. Therefore, domestic car enthusiasts install other tires with a larger diameter.
However, not everything is so smooth here either. If the wheel size differs greatly from the factory parameters, this may lead to inaccuracies in the speedometer readings. Some motorists claim that due to violations in the operation of devices, they received a fine for speeding.
Specialists from the Korean company conducted a large number of tests and trials, and found that 190 mm is enough to operate the crossover in any conditions. In some cases, you can install 215/65 wheels, which will increase the ground clearance by 5-10 mm, without major interventions in the design of the car. In addition, the crankcase protection can be partially upgraded.
As a result, we note that even with minimal changes, it is possible to achieve a clearance of 196 mm.

So, the standard Greta clearance is 190 mm. With minimal effort it can be increased by 6 mm, but rarely does anyone take such a step. The fact is that the basic indicator is the most optimal from the point of view of aerodynamics, and there is no point in disturbing this “harmony”.

Agree, it is unlikely that the owner of a ten-year-old car has not studied its capabilities, including off-road ones, up and down - but it’s worth thinking about before buying a new car. It’s not a fact that the model you like will not only allow you to go fishing or get to your dacha, but it won’t make you nervous when passing speed bumps.

The restyled Hyundai Solaris has been sold in Russia since mid-2014. The model is offered in two body styles: a sedan and a 5-door hatchback (production of the five-door hatchback was discontinued in May 2016). Both versions have at their disposal a pair of power units from the Gamma series: a 1.4-liter MPI engine with an output of 107 hp. (135 Nm) and a 1.6-liter MPI with 123 hp. Each engine is equipped with a variable valve timing system and a timing chain drive. The list of gearboxes includes four items:
- 5-speed manual M5CF1-1;

The main differences between the Hyundai Solaris hatchback and the sedan in terms of technical characteristics are the shorter body length (4120 mm versus 4375 mm for the four-door) and a more modest basic trunk volume (370 versus 470 liters).
The fuel consumption of the Hyundai Solaris 1.4 is 6.1 liters (with 5 manual transmission) or 6.6 liters (4 automatic transmission). A car with a 1.6 engine consumes not much more - 6.3 and 6.7 liters (“manual” and “automatic”, respectively).

Hyundai Solaris ground clearance or ground clearance, as for any other passenger car, is an important factor on our roads. It is the condition of the road surface or its complete absence that makes Russian motorists interested in the ground clearance of the Hyundai Solaris and the possibility of increasing ground clearance using spacers.
