To what temperature does the heated seats heat up? Is it possible to make heated seats yourself? History of creation: in search of truth

For every driver, comfort when operating a car plays an important role. Sitting in a car seat for a long time, especially in the cold, is not a pleasant experience. Usually a car has a heating system for the interior, but this is not always enough. That is why built-in heated seats will be an excellent option.

Types of heating

There are two ways to heat the seats:

  1. Snap-on or removable.
  2. Built-in.

In the first case, the heating elements are built into the car covers and attached with special Velcro. These are a kind of heating pads. Built-in heating is installed under the seat upholstery.

Each of the options boasts good features; the only question is the financial plan of the owner. The most common choice is built-in. Let's dwell on it in more detail.

Operating principle and materials

Stationary heating elements are mounted between the upholstery and the foam layer of the car seat. For their manufacture, mats made of carbon fiber fabric or reinforced wires are used. Such heating elements have numerous features.

Heating elements

Products made from nichrome spirals are relatively low in cost. Such sheets have limitations during installation; for example, they have to be specially adjusted so that the heating element does not come into contact with the fittings. In principle, this problem is easily solved thanks to double-sided tape.

Carbon fiber or thermal fiber mats do not have any restrictions. They can be cut at the desired location to attach the fittings to the car seat. The cost of such products is high, but is compensated by reliability.

Advantages and disadvantages

Built-in car seat heating has numerous advantages:

  • The heating element is electrical wiring. It is mounted under the seat upholstery, so the interior of the cabin will not be disturbed.
  • A special unit serves as a power source, that is, the cigarette lighter will be free.
  • Regulates the operation of the thermal relay device. It protects against sparks and possible short circuits, so operation becomes as safe as possible.
  • The control unit can be placed anywhere in the car.
  • You can warm up any seats in the car.

One of the minor disadvantages is the price. Built-in heating is a little more expensive than cap heating, but is distinguished by reliability and quality.

Features of work

The heating system is connected to the car's on-board computer. For maximum comfort, it has several temperature settings. In addition to the ability to switch modes, there is a special sensor that turns off the heating when the temperature specified by the driver is reached.

The car owner independently selects the desired temperature on the remote control, and the system starts. When the desired mark is reached, it turns off automatically. Some models provide automatic heating using a timer.

Also, built-in heaters can support the fast heating function, and then switch to standby mode. To do this, you need to choose models with two heating elements.

The number of modes depends on the model; there can be eight of them. Each mode is determined by the driver separately. They are adjusted individually for each seat.

Popular models

There are several popular models on the built-in seat heating market:

  1. Waeco MagicComfort MSH-300. It has a carbon element, an electronic control unit and three heating temperatures. The Waeco kit includes wires for installation and convenient buttons.
  2. Emelya UK-2. It is a heating sheet with a wire folded into a snake. Emelya control units are rotary type and have 8 heating modes. In addition, Emelya's device is protected from possible short circuits or sparks.
  3. Emelya UK. A good budget option, equipped with a control button with two positions and a built-in temperature sensor.
  4. Throne. The design is based on a patented thermal fiber. The fabric frame has an adhesive layer for simple and easy installation.

The best built-in heating is considered to be products from the Waeco brand. It is distinguished by true German quality, reliability and ease of installation. However, its price is quite high.

Waeco built-in heating is suitable for all cars, has several degrees of protection and two heating modes. If necessary, you can additionally turn on the emergency fast heating mode in winter, and then switch it to constant temperature maintenance.

Our Russian manufacturers offer the golden mean between low cost and quality. The most famous is the Teplodom company, which offers built-in heating units of the Emelya brand. They are named after a famous Russian fairy tale. As drivers joke, Emelya’s self-propelled stove was the first vehicle with heated seats.

However, it must be remembered that the Emelya sets are designed for two seats, that is, you need to buy an additional one for the rear ones. Russian heating systems are practically no different in quality from their more expensive European counterparts, and cost much less.

Why is built-in heating better?

In order to properly install the Emelya or Waeco system, you need to remove the seat trim. This is done in a workshop, because not all drivers have enough experience and skill to carefully remove it and put it back in place after installing the heating.

Built-in heaters, such as Waeco, do not move, as sometimes happens with heating covers. All wires are securely hidden, and only the block with buttons is displayed on the panel. If the system is installed in passenger seats, then the remote controls are located individually.

It is worth noting that not all sheathing materials can easily withstand heat. This should definitely be taken into account when purchasing. Fabric coverings practically do not react to heat, but genuine leather is more “capricious” in this regard.

Genuine leather releases natural moisture when heated and can dry out over time. Also, with prolonged use of heating, it can change its original appearance.

Although built-in heaters are reliable, you need to follow several operating recommendations:

Alternative to capes

The main problem is that the quality of the capes or covers leaves much to be desired. In addition, there have been cases when these capes caught fire on the seat, meaning there is a high risk of getting burned.

The capes heat up at varying degrees of intensity. In some models, the temperature can reach 40 degrees, which is prohibited for reproductive function in men. There is only one socket in the car's cigarette lighter, so if you choose a cape, you can only connect it.

The benefits of built-in heating like Waeco or Emelya are also indicated by the hidden installation, as well as the ability to install heating for all seats or just one. The cigarette lighter remains completely free.

Let's sum it up

Based on experience and practical reviews, several criteria for choosing seat heating can be identified:

  • The system must be made of high-quality materials, reliable and safe, for example, Waeco.
  • The device must have thermal sensors that protect against overheating.
  • It is desirable to have heating temperature switches. The more there are, the better.

Built-in heated seats provide warmth and comfort for the driver and his passengers in the winter season.

Today, seat heating systems are represented by two fundamental solutions: heating elements can serve as a cape, they are placed on the seat, or they can be built into chairs and heat from the inside.

Features of different types of seat heating systems

Seat covers are the simplest and least expensive method of heated seats for vehicles that did not have such a feature to begin with. In them, the heating element is sewn into the fabric, after which it is secured using a system of hooks or elastic bands and connected to the car cigarette lighter. The disadvantage of such a heating system is that during driving the cape can wrinkle, slide, etc., as a result, the passenger and driver may feel inconvenience. If buy such heated seats, then after a few seasons it will have to be replaced. An additional disadvantage of the system is that the cigarette lighter socket will be constantly occupied. It cannot be used to charge a portable device or be used in any other way.

Built-in heated seats, the price of which is affordable for most motorists, has a fairly simple design. The heating element in it is often a Teflon-coated wire, as well as a nichrome spiral. It is placed in thermal fiber or carbon fabric, and is powered by the vehicle’s on-board network. The system is placed in the lower part of the seat and backrest. After the heating is turned on, it heats up to approximately 35 degrees or slightly higher, after reaching this temperature the created thermal regime is maintained at the desired level. The use of temperature sensors avoids system overheating. Some models allow you to set the heating intensity, and, if desired, heat only one element - the seat or backrest.

Features of installing built-in seat heating

To install built-in seat heating systems, the seats themselves must be disassembled. To do this, their casing is removed, the products are installed, after which the structure is assembled. It is also important to take care of proper heating power supply. Often, the vehicle's on-board electrical system is used for this. You can complete the task yourself or contact a special installation center.

Compared to heating in the form of a cape or cover, built-in models have a number of advantages. One of them is that the heating elements are located under the seat trim, while the heating controls are displayed on the control panel. Therefore, during the trip it will not be difficult to reduce or increase the heating temperature. In addition, such models have a long service life.

The AutoProfi store offers a wide range of seat heating systems from various manufacturers. We cooperate only with reliable suppliers, so there is no doubt about the quality of our products. A description of the key features will allow everyone to make the best choice and purchase exactly the system they need.

Below is a number of models connected via a plug to a 12 V socket. Sometimes there are other options designed for homemade ones: in such cases it is necessary to penetrate into the guts of standard seats so that nothing is noticeable from the outside. But about them is a separate conversation another time.

The most important thing to remember when using such capes is not to forget to unplug the plugs from the socket after the trip. The fact is that not on all machines the sockets are de-energized, and therefore the turned on heater of the fillet and other parts of the body will drain the battery quite reliably. I don’t even want to think about fires.

It is curious that from the point of view of the law, such products can easily be classified as prohibited if desired. Indeed, they, like any gadgets, are not provided for by the design of the car, and therefore all responsibility for their use lies with the owner of the car. There is a sound grain in this: if a foreign rug is capable, for example, of getting hidden under the pedal block, then why can’t the Chinese cape have a similar number? It is clear that in practice no one will cling to this, but you need to be honest with yourself, and therefore, when installing, try not to mess around. A wire pinched somewhere can one day make a bad joke.

However, there are much more interesting questions. And the simplest one sounds like this: is such heating useful or harmful?

Let's start with the positive: useful, of course! If only because plopping down on an icy chair is not very pleasant. And experienced people say that such hypothermia can lead to disease of the kidneys and other organs located nearby. In addition, those same experienced people know: heated seats fight against such nasty things as radiculitis and osteochondrosis. And men who jump out of bed at night because they “got thirsty” or “didn’t turn off the TV” will appreciate heating from this side as well. And there are also arthrosis, intercostal neuralgia, etc.

In other words, are you heating it up? No not always. I don’t want to scare anyone, but if you suspect any tumors, it’s better to forget about seat heating - especially for those who sit behind the wheel for a long time. In addition, a warm place sometimes provokes inflammatory processes, which a relaxed body stops fighting. And also such unpleasant words as lymphostasis and swelling - brr... In general, consult your doctor. If there is one, of course.

However, you can and should do things simpler. When getting into a frozen car, you need to heat the seat to a comfortable temperature, and then turn off the heating: by this time the cabin is already warm. I think that this advice is suitable for both healthy people and sick people.

The actual current consumption is about 3 A. Among the design features, we note the symmetrical connectors on the right and left: the plug can be connected from either side. The push-button remote control allows you to select one of two heating modes. Just for fun, we tested it for overheating: after reaching 56°C, the device turned off. However, if you believe the instructions, the timer could have worked for half an hour. In general, there is foolproof protection.

Price - 2700 rubles. A little expensive, to be honest.

We were not given a description - alas... However, everything is clear: the intuitive slide switch of two modes does not raise any questions. After reaching 39°C, the current dropped from the initial 2.9 A to 1.6 A. After reaching 42°C, the device turned off: the protection was activated. Cost - 1700 rubles.

Products devoid of any controls have their own charm: plug it into your network and use it. This is how this cape is made: there are no buttons here - everything is as simple as shelling pears. The current consumption is 3.6 A, but it soon dropped to 3.2 A. The automatic shutdown threshold we recorded is approximately 49°C. The price is lower than others: from about 800 rubles.

I was immediately surprised by the current consumption: as much as 4.3 A. At the same time, the protection threshold is the lowest: 36°C. I didn’t like the sealing of the wire, especially since one protective plate immediately fell off, exposing sharp screws. However, the price is not the most prohibitive: 1000 rubles.

According to the description, the cape contains a “carbon heat element” - I quote the developers. We must assume that we are talking about a carbon fiber heater - it heats up quickly, is resistant to elastic deformation and is famous for its high thermal conductivity. In addition, carbon conductors do not oxidize. The current consumption is normal, about 3 A. When heated to 47°C, a “cut-off” is triggered, stopping further heating. Price - 1350 rubles.

For some reason, as many as three heating levels are announced, although we saw only two. The current consumption is the highest in our sample - 4.8 A. It’s not fatal for the on-board network, but it’s still a little strange: others clearly have less. Another surprise was that the built-in protection worked already at 32°C. Price - 1500 rubles.

We have been doing this for many years and have vast practical experience in this work. We will install heated seats quickly, efficiently, and provide a long-term warranty on heated seats. And then, the seat heating that we will install in your car will delight you with its trouble-free operation for many years, and save you from the cold and the danger of a cold.

Heating elements are professionally installed on the seat and backrest under the “original” upholstery of each chair. What is the difference between built-in heated seats and a regular heated seat cover sold in any car dealership? First of all, the fact that built-in heated seats is an almost stationary, factory-made version of heated seats. It will not dangle around the seat as in the case of a cape, and “get off” it. It will not be felt through the seat upholstery and will not be visible at all. It will work reliably for years (WARRANTY - from 1 year to 4 years!). It will not plug into the cigarette lighter like a seat warmer. AND car seat heating will be carried out with protection, and you will ultimately get a very comfortable and useful function in the cold season, worthy of having a place in every modern car - HEATED SEATS. Heating elements are professionally installed on the seat and backrest under the “original” upholstery of each chair.

heated seats with installation in your favorite car!

A heated seat is not only comfortable, but also much more comfortable than a standard car heater. This gadget works very quickly, which is why it’s so nice to sit in a car seat equipped with this seemingly simple option on a cold winter morning.

I plopped down on the icy seat for a couple of seconds, started the car, pressed the heating button, and within a couple of minutes the seat was already warm. Everything will heat up while you clean the car from snow. And here it is, the highest pleasure - to sit in a warm chair when there is frost all around. After about ten minutes you can turn it off or switch it to a less intense mode – the device will fry to its heart’s content.

In general, whoever tried it for the first time is unlikely to ever give up such a thing, especially if you have leather seats... Unfortunately, not all cars are initially equipped with heating. If you are one of them, then there is no need to be upset. You have three ways to retrofit your machine:

either with the help heated seat covers(the cheapest, but least aesthetic option);

through the next installation of heating inside the seats(the most time-consuming and complex method);

by replacing the seat (the most expensive method).

The fastest way to heat your seats: a heating blanket

The cheapest and least labor-intensive way to heat seats is a cape with this very function. It can be found online:

and in specialized stores, where there are many similar products in different versions for different car models with different seats. The cape installs in seconds and is typically powered from a 12-volt “cigarette lighter” outlet. Installation does not require any special knowledge or skills. Straighten the cover on the seat and secure it with the straps according to the instructions.

The only thing you should make sure is that the pads fit your car seat, are well secured and, if possible, do not slip. Next, plug the plug into the cigarette lighter - and the heating element begins to work its magic, pull out the plug from the 12-volt socket - and the pillow stops heating:

Video taken from YouTube channel MrCAHEK87

There are, of course, more “sophisticated” versions of heating covers, with multi-phase regulators, beautiful appearance and even massage and cooling functions... But they still will not be as comfortable as seats with built-in heating, cooling and massage, they will break down more often , but these multifunctional pads are not cheap at all: 5-9 thousand standard, unlike the same covers with a single heating function that can be purchased for 1,000-2,500 rubles.

Attention: The seat pad must not overlap the side airbags.

Crazy hands: retrofitting heated seats

The second option is suitable for those who know how to work with their hands and are confident in their knowledge and strength. Installation of heating elements inside the seats, under the upholstery.

In this case, the backrest and seat cushion must be removed first (note: this does not work with glued fabric covers, be sure to consult a professional here). Typically, seat covers can be opened easily using a zipper. Then the upholstery is removed. Next, the wiring is installed and connected to standard auto electrics.

Important: If the seat has side airbags, be sure to have it retrofitted by a specialist workshop. Improper handling of the airbag may cause it to deploy and cause injury to you.

An example of self-installation of heating elements:

Video taken from YouTube channel Repeat AutoHack

Depending on the model, a heated seat system to upgrade standard seats costs plus or minus about 2,000 thousand rubles. coolauto.su

If you are not sure that you can carry out the installation yourself, you should contact a workshop. This is an additional expense of from 3,500 to 8,000 rubles, depending on the number of connected seats, for example two front ones, and the complexity of their design. If the seat covers are glued, the labor costs are higher and the installation price increases proportionately.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING HEATED SEATS (EXAMPLE)

If you don't want to give up heated seats in your car, you can install it yourself. We'll show you how to do this using the C-Class as an example in a step-by-step guide. You can also familiarize yourself with the subject in the video above, if your soul is not in the mood for reading at the moment.

Disable: First you need to disconnect the negative terminal. If you don't do this, you risk short circuiting and burning something. After removing the terminal, the airbag warning light will come on.

Unscrew: four screws in the seat rails (floor mounted runners), two connectors under the seat and one screw on the seat belt. No further actions need to be taken in the C-Class. Pull out the seat.

Parsing: Separate the seat from the base of the seat so that you can get to the insides. Two screws hold the seat to the main frame.

Removal: Once the screws are removed, the seat can be lifted off the frame, this is the only way to remove the fabric cover from the cushion.

Removal: Squeeze the seat base and lift the cover guides away from the seat frame.

Working with a drill: The seat heating cable is pulled through the hole.

Cut a window: in the center of the seat there is a clip, which must be secured with fastening wire; in order to gain access to it, a window is cut in the mat.

Installation: the heating mat is cut to fit the seat, a few centimeters need to be cut off (depending on the width of the seat). This is exactly the case with the Mercedes-Benz seat. The mat is fixed with double-sided adhesive tape.

Installation: First secure the wire to the hook, then put the cover on the bottom of the seat. Straighten the fabric; there should be no folds.

Let loose: loosen the lower fastening clamp, now you can remove the cover and slide it down.

Unhook: On the underside there are two hooks that can be easily removed.

Clamps: There are guides on the back side, carefully move them away with a screwdriver, then slide them with your fingers.

Side wall: We loosen the lumbar support adjustment and remove the upholstery on that side of the seat only, thereby making room for the heating mat.

Hook: the upholstery is secured to the base using a hook that fits into a red clip, holding the fabric in place. It can be unhooked using a screwdriver.

Heating mat: cut to seat size. Double-sided adhesive tape is designed to prevent the mat from slipping under the seat cover during use.

Installation of the mat: it should lie flat. To avoid damaging the elements of the side airbag, you can install the heating by folding the canopy on only one side.

Working with a drill: The power button can be placed in any convenient place at hand. In this case, a place was chosen next to the seat recline wheel. Easy to get to, nothing gets in the way.

Set the switch: If a suitable drill bit is not available, rework the diameter with a round file until the heater switch fits into the hole.

Electrical connection: current should only flow when the ignition is on. If you forget to turn off the heating, the battery will not drain.

Mask: route the cable through the inside under the seat. Plastic caps are usually held in place only by plastic clips.

Connection: important (!): the cables must be long enough.

Functional check: is everything connected? The switch will turn red. The seat and backrest will begin to heat up according to your desire with just one click of a button.

Convenient alternative: replacing the car seat

The most convenient - but also the most expensive - option for installing a seat heater in a car is to replace the entire seat with an analog one, but with a heating function.

Suitable car seats with heated seats can be purchased at a salvage yard. Depending on the time of year, a set of two seats will cost from 5 to 30, 60 thousand rubles or even more: baza.drom.ru

The following rule also applies here: if the seat is fitted with a side airbag, removal and installation must only be carried out by a specialist. The price is usually negotiable.
