Ignition switch for VAZ 2106. Pinout of the ignition switch for VAZ. Ignition switch failures

When getting into a car, any driver turns the key in the ignition to start the engine. This simple action ensures that the starter receives voltage from the power source, as a result of which the engine crankshaft begins to turn and the engine starts. If a breakdown occurs with the ignition switch, further operation of the vehicle becomes impossible. However, many problems can be fixed with your own hands.

Ignition switch VAZ 2106

At first it may seem that the ignition switch of the VAZ 2106 is an insignificant detail. However, if you look at it, the mechanism is an integral part in any car, since it starts the engine and powers the electrical network. In addition to supplying voltage to the starter, electricity from the lock is supplied to devices that allow you to control certain parameters of the car, etc. When the vehicle is parked, the device de-energizes systems and devices.

Purpose and design

If we describe the purpose of the ignition switch in simple words, then this mechanism prevents the battery from being discharged through the on-board network and provides voltage only when necessary, i.e. during operation of the car.

The main elements of the ignition switch are: 1. - locking rod; 2 - body; 3 - roller; 4 - contact disk; 5 - contact sleeve; 6 - block

The ignition switch on the VAZ Six consists of the following elements:

  • locking rod;
  • frame;
  • roller;
  • contact disk;
  • contact sleeve;
  • block.

There are many wires connected to the lock mechanism. They are supplied from the battery and connect everything installed in the car into a single electrical circuit. When the key is turned, a circuit is closed from the “-” terminal of the power source to the ignition coil. The current passes through the wires to the ignition switch, and then is supplied to the coil and returns back to the positive terminal of the battery. When current flows through the coil, a voltage is generated in it, which is necessary to create a spark at the spark plugs. As a result, when the key closes the ignition circuit contacts, the engine starts.

The ignition switch is connected to the electrical circuit using wires with connectors at the ends. If the wires are connected to the mechanism using a chip (large round connector), then there should be no problems with the connection.

If the wires are connected separately, you must adhere to the following connection sequence:

  • pin 15 - blue with a black stripe (ignition, interior heating and other devices);
  • pin 30 - pink wire;
  • pin 30/1 - brown;
  • pin 50 - red (starter);
  • INT - black (dimensions and headlights).

Below is the electrical diagram for connecting the lock:

Description

The ignition switch of the VAZ 2106 is made in the shape of a cylinder and consists of an electrical (contacts) and a mechanical (core) part. The mechanism also has a protrusion for fixing the steering wheel. On one side of the device there is a recess for the key, on the other there are contacts for connecting electrical wires. The two parts of the lock are connected to each other by means of a leash.

The ignition switch provides not only rotation of the contact group rotation mechanism, but also locks the steering wheel when the key is removed from the lock. Locking is possible due to a special rod, which, when turning the key to the right, partially enters the device body. When the key rotates counterclockwise, the element extends, and when it is removed, the part enters a special hole in the steering column. The locking mechanism is accompanied by a loud click when the key is removed.

"The lock

Since each key has its own tooth shape, this is an additional measure of protection against theft. Therefore, if you try to start the engine with another key, it will not be possible.

contact Group

The contacts of the VAZ 2106 ignition switch have the form of a washer with leads for connecting electrical wiring. On the inside of the washer there are conductive contacts of these terminals, as well as a movable element that rotates under the influence of the lock mechanism. When the position of this element changes, certain contacts are closed, thereby providing power to the terminals of the product in question, connected to the closed coins.

How does it work

The ignition switch of the “six” is located in the car interior to the left of the steering column and is hidden by decorative elements. On the driver's side, the mechanism has a key hole. There are several marks on the front surface of the lock - 0, I, II and III. Each of them has its own purpose.

The “0” mark is a position that ensures that all devices powered by the ignition switch are turned off; the key can also be removed in this position.

Electrical devices such as a brake light, a cigarette lighter, or interior lighting operate regardless of the position of the key in the lock, since they are constantly supplied with battery power.

Mark I - in this position, power is supplied to the on-board network. Voltage is supplied to the headlights, dashboard, and ignition system. In this case, the key is fixed and there is no need to hold it.

Mark II - in this position of the lock, voltage from the battery begins to flow to the starter to start the power unit. In this case, there is no locking, so the driver holds the key until the engine starts. As soon as the engine starts running, the key is released and it takes position I.

Mark III - parking. In this position, all electrical devices connected to the on-board network are de-energized, and a latch is inserted into the hole in the steering wheel column, which prevents the theft of the vehicle.

Find out about the malfunctions of the VAZ-2106 instrument panel:

Ignition switch problems

Problems are possible with both the mechanical and electrical parts of the device.

The key won't turn

One of the lock malfunctions is a problem with the key, when it turns tightly or does not turn at all. Quite often the situation ends with the key breaking, as a result of which part of it remains inside the mechanism. A solution to the problem of a jamming lock can be the use of a penetrating lubricant, for example, WD-40. But do not forget that this is just a temporary solution and the switch will still have to be replaced in the near future.

Devices do not function

If such a problem is observed when the key is turned in the lock, but the instruments on the dashboard do not show “signs of life,” this may indicate damage to the contacts of the mechanism, as a result of which they do not fit together tightly enough. The malfunction is solved by replacing the contact group or simply by cleaning the contacts with fine sandpaper. It is advisable to check how tightly the connectors fit on the contacts - they may need to be tightened with pliers.

The starter does not turn on

If there is a problem with the lock, problems with starting the starter may also occur. The reason is damage to the switch contacts or failure of the contact group. As a rule, the malfunction is typical for the contacts that supply power to the starter. The problem manifests itself as follows: the starter does not start or it takes several attempts to turn it on. To determine whether there is indeed a fault in the contacts, you can check the voltage at the terminals using a test lamp or multimeter.

If it is discovered that the contacts have become unusable, it is not necessary to completely change the lock - you can only replace the washer with the contacts.

Ignition switch repair

To carry out repair work or replace the lock, it must be removed from the car. Tools you will need:

  • Phillips screwdriver;
  • awl.

How to remove the lock

After preparing the tools, you can begin dismantling, which is performed in the following order:

  1. Remove the negative terminal from the battery.
  2. Remove the decorative linings of the steering column.
  3. To avoid confusion with the wires during reassembly, write down on a piece of paper or mark with a marker which wire should be connected where, and then remove the wires.
  4. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the lower fastener of the lock.
  5. Insert the key into the device and turn it to the “0” position, which will disable the steering wheel locking mechanism. Immediately, using a thin awl, press the latch, by means of which the switch is held in place.
  6. By pulling the key towards you, the lock is removed.

How to disassemble a lock

During the repair process, as a rule, the “larva” or contact group is changed. To remove the washer with contacts, you will need a minimum of tools: a screwdriver, a hammer and a tool. Disassembly consists of the following steps:

Getting to the core of the castle is somewhat more difficult:

Video: repairing the ignition switch on a “classic”

What kind of lock can I put?

On classic Zhiguli cars, ignition switches of the same design were installed, but it should be taken into account that cars produced before 1986 were equipped with locks with 7 pins, and then with 6. If you need to replace a lock or washer with contacts with 7 pins, and find they failed, you can simply buy the second option and connect two wires together (15/1+15/2), and then connect them to terminal 15.

Installing the "Start" button

Some VAZ 2106 owners install a button for ease of starting the engine. It is connected via the starter power circuit to the break in the red wire, which goes to pin 50 of the ignition switch. In this case, the engine starts as follows:

  1. The key is inserted into the lock.
  2. Turn it to position I.
  3. The starter is started by pressing the button.
  4. When the engine starts, the button is released.

To stop the power unit, you must turn the key counterclockwise. A slightly different option for connecting the button is also possible, so that with its help you can not only start the engine, but also turn it off. For these purposes you will need the following parts:

  • headlight relay RS 711;
  • starter relay 113.3747–10 or 90.3747–10.

According to the diagram, when the button is pressed, power is supplied to the headlight relay, and after the contacts are closed, to the starter. When starting the power unit, the button is released, thereby opening the contacts of the starter relay and breaking its power circuit. If you press the button again, the contacts of the switching device open, the ignition circuit is broken and engine operation stops. The second option for using the button is called “Start-Stop”.

Even a car owner who is encountering such a problem for the first time can replace or repair the ignition switch on a VAZ 2106. To carry out the work you will need a minimum of tools and following step-by-step instructions. The main thing is to connect the wiring to the lock in accordance with the diagram.

On a VAZ 2106 car, the ignition switch is the main control element of the on-board electrical equipment system. Only if the lock is in full technical condition does the correct operation of the ignition system be ensured.

Unfortunately, the ignition switch of the VAZ 2106 cannot boast of long-term uninterrupted operation and quite often motorists are faced with the fact that it fails.

Therefore, they have to figure out what the VAZ 2106 ignition switch is, wiring diagram, remove it, repair what is broken, and then mount it back, at the same time remembering the wiring diagram for all the wires.

Our article will help you understand the issues of electronic ignition of the VAZ 2106. After reading it, many will be able to independently repair the lock on the VAZ 2106 and will no longer experience problems with its dismantling and installation. It will also be useful for those who do not remember the connection diagram for each cable on the device.

basic information

The main elements of the ignition switches on the VAZ 2106 are the ignition switch system and the starter control circuit. Voltage is supplied to a given circuit at a certain key position.

The design of electronic ignition on a VAZ consists of two elements:

  • The electrical part consists of a wire terminal that is secured at the bottom of the lock with a locking clip. Thanks to this element, the correct distribution of voltage to the vehicle’s on-board electronics occurs.

The mechanical part is installed directly in the ignition switch itself. She is responsible in the car for locking the steering wheel, turning on the electronics and starting the starter.

It is worth noting that on a VAZ 2106 car, breakdowns can equally be associated with both the mechanical elements of the part and the electronics.

During the use of a vehicle, contactless ignition malfunctions vary, so you need to understand what they may be associated with and know the wiring diagram.

What kind of damage can occur in the ignition switch?

As mentioned above, practice shows that breakdowns are common to both parts of the lock and often require replacement of one or the other half. Sometimes VAZ 2106 ignition coils can fail

When servicing these elements, you need to know what a non-contact ignition circuit is, and after that you need to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, except if you check the presence of voltage at consumers.

  1. Mechanical failure

The most common malfunction of the mechanical part of the locking system is a tight turn of the key; if the connection problem is not solved in time, the key will jam in the lock or break. As a result, you will have to change the entire lock, and such a replacement will require large expenses.

Factory ignition switches from VAZ 2106 cars very rarely break down in this way; such a malfunction is typical for Chinese spare parts, because the cost of the analogue is an order of magnitude lower. Analogs cannot be repaired, unlike spare parts from the LADA automobile plant.

If a car enthusiast encounters a similar problem, then in the future, as a rule, he already purchases an original spare part from AvtoVAZ, no longer trusting Chinese manufacturers of parts.

  1. Electronic failures

Often, malfunctions of the VAZ 2106 ignition switch are associated with the electronic part of the device and they also require replacement. In this case, it is important to remember that the connection diagram plays a huge role, and you should not mix up the wires.

The main causes of ignition terminal malfunction:

  • Oxidation of contacts.
  • Partial or complete combustion of wires.

Melting of the plastic part of the terminal.

These reasons are caused by poor terminal contact on the VAZ 2106, or by the fact that the starter starts for a long time.

In this case, it is only necessary to change the electronic unit, which can be purchased separately at auto parts stores.

When replacing, you need to remember or sketch the colors of each cable connected to the lock so that the diagram is at hand, or simply take a photo of the terminal with your phone. Each contact has a specific number. So, the connection can be made according to the diagram indicated on the manufacturer’s packaging box. If there is no diagram or it is lost, then read on.

Connection diagram

The electronic block of the lock has the following contacts:

15 - a double blue wire with a black stripe is connected to the contact.

30 - pink wire. Responsible for turning on the starter.

30/1 - brown wire.

50 - purple or red. The color depends on the year of manufacture of the car. Additional circuit for starting the starter.

INT is a black wire with two contacts, responsible for supplying voltage from the positive terminal to the ignition switch.

The ignition circuit is quite simple, and many people remember the pinout of the wires the first time.

Replacing the ignition switch

This procedure can be performed independently if you have at least basic skills in working with tools, and be sure to follow. The ignition switch on a VAZ 2106 car is not too complicated, and the connection diagram for all the wires is simple and clear. Therefore, independent replacement, without contacting a service center, is carried out by many car enthusiasts.

For repair, disconnection and connection you will need:

  • positive screwdriver;
  • slotted screwdriver;
  • thin awl or small nail.

Before starting repairs, be sure to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery!

Many people know that a voltage of 12V is not dangerous for humans and are not afraid of getting an electric shock. At the same time, they forget that electricity can affect not only the hand, but also car parts. If, when trying to remove the lock, the wires are accidentally shorted, this may lead to failure of some electronic components of the machine.

To replace, you need to take a large Phillips and a small socket screwdriver. First of all, the plastic steering wheel cover is dismantled. First, the lower bar is removed, then the upper one. Once the casing is removed, all elements of the lock become accessible and can be removed.

The second step is to disconnect the wires from the mechanical half of the device, first remembering the position of the terminals, because the pinout of the wires is important in this case. This was discussed above.

After unscrewing the bolts securing the lock itself with a small screwdriver, you need to turn the car key to the “zero” position. The device should now come out of the mount easily and without much effort.

The next step is to unhook all the wires that go to the ignition switch. For those who helped, the diagram was redrawn or photographed, while the rest can print out the memo from this article. This will help them connect the part without much hassle.

Then we look for a small flat gap to the left of the part on the bracket and forcefully insert an awl into it to press the latch.

Now you can remove the ignition switch from the bracket by prying it with another screwdriver.

Installation and connection of a new lock occurs in the reverse order. The main thing is to connect all the contacts correctly, remembering the connection diagram, otherwise you can burn the wires.

Do not forget that the negative terminal of the battery must be disconnected during replacement.

The ignition switch of the VAZ 2106 is a fairly simple mechanism. Its scheme includes only four main elements: the body, the contact group, the anti-theft system and the lock itself. All these elements are closely interconnected, but if any of them fails, they can be replaced separately.

Device

Each of the above elements has a separate design. If we look at the ignition switch in more detail, we can note such details as: locking console, housing, shaft, disk with contacts, bushing, block, and cutout of a group of contacts.

The locking console is responsible for locking the steering wheel in the absence of the ignition key in the lock. The case is a protective element and covers the entire structure of the lock. The shaft is responsible for the rotation of the disk with contacts in relation to the sleeve, and forms contact between them. The block and group of contacts, in turn, are connected to the general ignition system of the car, and transmit the resulting contact to the distributor, through the ignition coil.

Replacing the device

Before replacing the ignition switch, it is worth determining whether it can be repaired. Sometimes replacement is simply not advisable, since the breakdown may be insignificant, and when replacing a separate element, it will be eliminated. But, if, nevertheless, a replacement is necessary, then let's figure out how to do it correctly.

Before starting work, be sure to prepare a bench tool, a file with a fine tip, and a multimeter. First of all, you need to remove the protective housing from the lock. Next, to remove the ignition switch, unscrew its fastenings and set the key to position “0” to disable the lock.

Further, the lock disassembly scheme includes removing the locking element through a special opening. This is done using a pre-prepared file. Now the ignition switch can be easily disconnected from the panel.

When connecting a new device, a special diagram must be followed, therefore, the contacts should be marked with a marker before disconnecting them from the part. Connecting a new lock is carried out strictly according to the pinout marked on its rim.

The VAZ 2106 ignition pinout is deciphered as follows:

  • Value “0” - contacts 30 and 30/1, turn off the power system, transferring it to emergency operation.
  • Value “I” - contacts 30/1-15 and 30-INT, include lighting systems (front and interior), windshield wiper, washer motor, heater and air conditioning fan, generator unit, instrument panel sensors, turn signals and sound signals, and also, the ignition system itself.
  • Value “II” - contacts 30/1-15, 30-INT and 30-50, leave the previous elements turned on, with the exception of the ignition system, generator unit and panel instruments. Also, the starter circuit turns on and the engine starts running.
  • Value “III” - contacts 30-INT and 30/1, considered the parking position, stops the starter circuit, leaving the lighting system, wipers, washer motor and cooling system working.

After the lock circuit is connected, test its performance in all modes using a multimeter. To do this, disconnect the battery terminal and install a multimeter between the contact and the battery positive. Turn the ignition key so that it activates the contact being tested. If a sign of operability appears on the multimeter panel, it means that the circuit has been followed correctly. This procedure should be carried out for all four contact positions.

Conclusion

When replacing this element, you should be very careful, since if it is connected incorrectly, the entire ignition circuit will stop working and you will not be able to start the engine. Also, if the contacts are mixed up, you can provoke increased voltage on one of their nodes, which will certainly lead to its instant failure.

It is worth noting that this ignition switch connection diagram is suitable not only for the “six”, but also for the rest of the VAZ “Classic” model range. This is quite convenient, since when choosing a new part, you will not have any special problems.

The mechanical-electric ignition switch of the VAZ 2106 is represented by a body part with a locking device, an anti-theft mechanism and an electrical contact group. The schematic diagram of the sixth generation VAZ ignition switch is located in the figure below and the marked symbols are numbered as follows:

  1. Locking console.
  2. Hull part.
  3. Contacts disk.
  4. Contact sleeve.
  5. Block.
  6. a – extensive cutout of the contact group.

To connect the ignition switch, you need to know its location in the cabin. This element of the system is located under the instrument panel on the steering column shaft bracket.

Replacing the ignition switch

An unscheduled replacement of the VAZ 2106 ignition switch is carried out when fatal faults are detected, such as dysfunction of the anti-theft complex or defects in the mechanical part of the product. The most convenient option for replacing the ignition switch is a complete reinstallation of this element of the system. However, the contact group must be replaced by removing the spring-loaded hoop-shaped stopper and installing the updated part. Also, regardless of other technological operations, the ignition switch cylinder is replaced, which is dismantled on the removed product.

To remove the ignition switch of a VAZ 2106, you need to prepare a set of locksmith tools, a tool with a thin round tip (awl) and a tester or multimeter. The procedure for dismantling and installing the ignition switch:

  1. Remove the protective casing of the electrical wiring under the steering wheel, having first removed the mounting bracket.
  2. Remove the ignition switch and disable the anti-theft function by placing the key in the “0” position.
  3. Press the fixing element with a thin screwdriver through the technological opening in the fastener.
  4. Remove the ignition switch from the mounting.
  5. Mark with a felt-tip pen or, if the car enthusiast relies on his memory, memorize the order of connecting the wires to the outputs and contacts of the locking device.
  6. Disconnect the wiring from the element.
  7. Test the correct connection of the contact group at different positions of the ignition key using the ignition switch pinout located below.
  8. The general circuit of the ignition switch is designed so that the potential difference from the battery and the generator unit is supplied to connectors “30” and “30/1”. The “INT” output is intended for integrating an audio system or other gadgets.
  9. When checking the functionality of the anti-theft mechanism, the locking console must move to extension if the ignition key is fixed in position “III” (parking position) and be removed from the locking device.
  10. When the key position is changed to position “0”, the locking console “hides” in the opening of the body part. The ignition key must be removed exclusively in position “III”.
  11. When replacing ignition switch contacts, it is necessary to lift the retaining ring with an awl or similar device through the technological opening and remove the group of contacts. When installing a contact group, it must be installed so that outputs “15” and “30” occupy a position from the locking console. This will allow the protrusion in the group of contacts to be aligned with the housing groove of the ignition switch, which will ensure their unhindered interaction.
  12. The group of contacts can be removed without removing the ignition switch, freeing the steering column from the protective cover. True, the installation of this element will be fraught with great difficulties.
  13. Installation of the ignition switch is carried out in the opposite order.

There are malfunctions of the VAZ 2106 ignition switch that occur in the electrical part of the product. This is, as a rule, a burning of a group of product contacts associated with an unstable electrical wiring connection. If the ignition switch is jammed, this is due to mechanical deformation of the key element.

The ignition switch of the VAZ 2106 is the main control element in the electrical system

and the operation of all systems and mechanisms of the car depends on its technically sound condition.

When the ignition key is in different positions, certain circuits and consumers are energized. The main circuits that are “commanded” by the ignition switch of the VAZ 2106. The wiring diagram includes the ignition circuit and the starter circuit - these are the main circuits.

The ignition switch of the VAZ 2106 consists of mechanical and electrical parts. The mechanical part is made in the body of the ignition switch, and the electrical part is made separately in the form of a terminal block, which is inserted into the lower part of the ignition switch and secured with a retaining ring.

During operation, failures are associated in almost equal proportions with both the mechanical and electrical parts of the ignition switch, where the terminal block accounts for a slightly larger percentage of failures.

Reminder. For any work on the electrical part, the negative terminal of the battery must be removed, unless it is necessary to check the operation of the consumer.

Ignition switch failures

Mechanical failures of the ignition switch

Mechanically, most ignition switch failures are associated with tight turning of the ignition key or its jamming in one of the positions. Often such a malfunction ends with the ignition key breaking and, as a rule, the VAZ 2106 ignition switch being replaced.

Basically, such malfunctions with the ignition key are caused by poor-quality assembly of the ignition switch from clearly inferior manufacturers. Initially, the cost of such a lock is significantly lower than the original VAZ ignition switches, and the owners of the VAZ 2106 simply “get” on their own savings. As a rule, such products are not purchased twice and they buy a high-quality lock that is devoid of such shortcomings.

Electrical failures of the lock

Often, even though the mechanical part of the ignition switch is fully functional, the terminal block of the lock fails, which can be replaced by purchasing it from an auto parts network. The terminal part of the lock “suffers” from burning or complete burnout of contacts connecting certain power supply circuits. It is also common for the central plastic insert to melt and open and close certain contacts in a particular position of the ignition key. This is usually caused by overheating from holding the key in the “starter” position for a long time, when the driver tries for a long time to unsuccessfully start the engine.

In such cases, only the terminal block is purchased, and not the VAZ 2106 ignition switch itself. The wiring diagram should remain the same. If the replacement is being carried out for the first time, then it is best to look from below at the ignition switch and sketch the colors of the wire and the terminals to which they are connected. Each terminal on the block has its own number, so it is convenient to write down the wire color and terminal number so as not to confuse anything when installing a new terminal block.

Terminal markings and wire connection diagram

The terminal block has the following pins for connecting to wires: “15”, “30”, “30/1”, “50” and “INT”. The wire that goes to terminal “15” is double blue with a black stripe. The wire to terminal “30/1” is brown. On terminal “30” - pink. At terminal “50” - red or purple. On the “INT” terminal - double black. Terminals “30” and “50” are responsible for starting the starter, which, in the event of a lock failure, can be connected to each other to start the engine in order to get to a service station or auto parts store.

Typically, manufacturers provide a wiring diagram on the terminal block packaging.
