- check the brake discs and pads, wear (i.e. depth of the wiped surface) should be no more than 1.5 mm
- find out if the timing belt has been changed

- air conditioner/climate - we check the performance, find out whether it has been refueled or not

You DEFINITELY need to take a ride in the car yourself while driving. Some owners may reasonably refuse under the pretext that you will move somewhere out of habit. Then, of course, it’s up to you to decide, but I advise you to insist, because I wouldn't buy a car without driving it. While driving, turn the steering wheel all the way in both directions, nothing should crunch or crackle anywhere, the engine should run smoothly and calmly without shaking or sudden changes in speed.
You can indirectly check the cooling system - if when you press the gas the temperature needle jumps, it means that something may be wrong. I also advise you to accelerate dynamically, rev the engine to 5-6 thousand rpm, see how the car behaves, and if possible check (by warning the owner =) the functionality of the ABS by sharp braking.

We DEFINITELY go for diagnostics. In general, I would advise at the stage of the first call about the car to ask a question about subsequent diagnostics; if the owner refuses right away, it means there is something to hide, which means this option is not needed. Let's look at the engine, suspension and gearbox (or anything else you want). Don’t be lazy to pay 2-3 thousand for diagnostics, it can tell you a lot that you will never see superficially.

Also, given that you are not buying a new car, it is worth asking the owner what has changed:
