What is the difference between an ATV and an all-terrain vehicle? Quadricycle and quad bike: comparison of vehicles. Types of children's ATVs

Quad cycles, quadricycles and tricycles. What are the differences?

Surely you are already familiar with such a vehicle as quadrocycle... It turns out that a regular driver's license is not suitable for driving it. And you will learn a little about which ones are suitable. We will also talk about different types of ATVs and even mention snowmobiles.

But we will start our excursion with a new category of vehicles "B1" - tricycles and quadricycles. These names, unlike “ATVs,” are not yet familiar to us and it is extremely difficult to find such vehicles on Russian roads.

In fact, many people believe that category “B1” allows you to drive a car with an automatic transmission. But no, this is a completely new category of transport, until recently unknown to us. Although, of course, everything is relative. It’s just that previously existing similar transport was classified in other categories.

What is a quadricycle and a tricycle?

Quadri cycles are four-wheeled motor vehicles (tricycles - three-wheeled), intended for use on public roads and subject to the traffic police in the general order.

An example of a quadricycle is the Soviet car-motorcycle SZM-S3D “Invalidka” (on the left in the figure). Some of you may remember this “misunderstanding” of Soviet engineering with a whirring motorcycle engine.

Tricycles (photo in the center) are very common in Asian countries as cargo-passenger three-wheeled motorcycle transport (our analogue is the Ant scooter).

But you can only see a three-wheeled motorcycle in large cities, and only if you try really hard. It’s just that such tricycles are found only among motorcycle aesthetes or handy Kulibins.

By the way, large quadricycles are quite often called Road ATVs, and in the West they are abbreviated as GG-Quad, Also Moto Quad, Quad Bikes etc.

Any of you, if desired, can easily acquire at least a tricycle... A flurry of enthusiastic and curious glances at you on the road is guaranteed!

An example of a commercially available tricycle - "Roadster Spider"

Undoubtedly, modern three-wheeled vehicles look very impressive, but this miracle costs... almost as much as a full-fledged car. Also, according to one of the owners, unlike two-wheeled motorcycles, you will have to stand in traffic jams on such a device no less often than on a car, and the comfort will be much less. Especially in inclement weather.

Roughly speaking, quadricycles are either three- or four-wheeled motorcycles, or mini cars, which require the same documents as a car or motorcycle. When purchasing such vehicles, a Vehicle Passport (PTS) is attached.

What category of rights is needed to drive a quadricycle and tricycle?

On November 5, 2013, a new category appeared in driver's licenses “B1”* - tricycles and quadricycles.

This is of course all true, but there are some important nuances in determining the category of driver's license required to drive such vehicles...
Let's try to figure it out.

What is the difference between categories “M” - moped, “A” - motorcycle and “B1” - tricycles?

With an unloaded mass of such a vehicle. more than 400 kg, the driver must have a license with an open subcategory “B1”.

And owners of light tricycles and quadricycles (with an engine capacity of no more than 50 cubic centimeters) must have a license with category "M" ** or have any other open category of driver’s license.

__________
* - less than 550 kg for cargo transportation.

Those. Tricycles and quadricycles, depending on the required categories of rights to operate them, can be divided into:

"M"- light tricycles and quadricycles (mopeds);
"A"- tricycles and quadricycles, including those included in the junior category "A1"
"IN 1"- heavy tricycles and quadricycles (over 400kg);

And was it worth it to “fence a garden” for the sake of a tiny amount of such transport and separate it from the rest?

The question is controversial. Perhaps the time for tricycles and quadricycles in our country has not yet come... We'll wait and see.

ATV and snowmobile licenses

Quad bikes are motorized off-road four-wheeled vehicles (all-terrain vehicles, all-terrain vehicles) with a motorcycle-type seat and a motorcycle-type steering wheel, intended for driving off public roads.

On some ATVs, the steering wheel and driver's position are no different from a car.

The main document of the ATV is Self-propelled vehicle passport (PSM). Similar passports are also issued for tractors and other construction equipment, so an ATV can safely be called a mini tractor.

Example of a Passport for a self-propelled vehicle.

It is necessary to register * ATVs (as well as all-terrain vehicles, snow and swamp-going vehicles and even snowmobiles) with the Gostekhnadzor authorities and to drive them you must have a tractor driver's license.

To be more precise: a certificate of a tractor driver (tractor driver) category "A1"- off-road motor vehicles.

* - to register an ATV, the owner has no more than 10 days from the moment of its acquisition; (- or until the expiration of the registration marks “Transit”). These registration deadlines apply to any and are defined by paragraph 1 “Basic provisions for the approval of vehicles for operation...”. By the way, such vehicles are also required to undergo technical inspection.

How to get a license for an ATV (snowmobile)?

A tractor driver's license for category "A1" can be obtained from the age of 16. To be admitted to the exam, you need to obtain a medical certificate with permission to drive tractors (self-propelled machines) and prepare for the qualification exam, which is conducted by employees of the State Technical Supervision Authority.

Updated form of the Tractor Driver (Tractor Driver) Certificate.

The exam for obtaining a tractor driver's license consists of theory and practice. The theory is accepted on tickets approved by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, and practice takes place in two stages on a closed site (tractor track).

You can take the practical part of the exam only after successfully passing the theory. The passed theoretical exam is valid for 3 months. If this deadline is missed, then before admission to the practical part, you will need to successfully pass the theory again.

On first During the practical stage, you need to complete the following exercises:

  • starting from a standstill on an uphill slope;
  • turning around with a limited width of the territory with a one-time gear shift;
  • putting a self-propelled vehicle into a box in reverse;
  • aggregation of a self-propelled vehicle with a trailer (trailer);
  • braking and stopping at various speeds, including emergency stopping;

Second The practical exam stage is taken on a special route under conditions of actual operation of a self-propelled vehicle.

Repeated exams are scheduled no earlier than 7 days later. But if you fail the internship 3 times in a row, then on the next (4th) attempt you will be required to provide documents on additional training.

An example of an ATV that requires an “A1” tractor driver’s license

Manufacturers now produce a wide variety of motorcycles, the range of which can baffle even an experienced driver. For example, many buyers do not know the difference between an ATV and a quadricycle. Despite the similarity in name, these are completely different cars.

In essence, an ATV is a four-wheeled motorcycle with a number of individual features. The list of distinctive characteristics of the equipment includes:

  • The ATV's pedals are used only to change gears.
  • The device is equipped with a motorcycle steering wheel.
  • The car has no interior, only a seat.
  • For control, the gas handle and brakes located on the steering wheel are used.
  • To operate an ATV, category A1 license is required.

One of the main differences between an ATV and an ATV is the design. The first device looks more like a miniature car or buggy, and the second one looks like a small tractor.

Types of ATVs

There are three types of ATVs: utilitarian, sports and touring. Each device is designed for specific tasks.

Varieties:

  • Utilitarian devices. This is a universal technique that is used for outdoor activities and work. Utilities can transport or tow cargo, drive over rough terrain, sand, snow and wetlands.
  • Sports. Racing machines allow you to reach high speeds (more than 100 km/h). The vehicles are not particularly distinguished by cross-country ability and load-carrying capacity.
  • Tourist ATVs. This is a comfortable equipment designed for long trips. Touring vehicles are not very fast, but they can travel almost anywhere.

The difference between an ATV and a quadricycle also lies in its purpose. The first device is a workhorse, and the second is a comfortable transport.

A quadricycle is a technique that does not belong to any category of transport. Essentially, it is a cross between an ATV and a car. You can recognize a quadricycle by the following features:

  • Control pedals. The difference between an ATV and a quadricycle is the way it is controlled. In the first case, the gas and brake handles are used, and in the second, the pedals.
  • Steering wheel. A regular car steering wheel is installed on the quadricycle.
  • Body. Another difference between a quadricycle and an ATV is the similarity of a car body. The design is quite simple, but can protect the driver and passenger from rain and dirt. The cars have a primitive roof, but no doors.
  • Comfortable salon. A quadricycle, like a car, has comfortable seats or a sofa.
  • Purpose. The device is used for driving on public roads. The car cannot drive through mud or rough terrain.
  • Rights. To drive transport, you must pass category “B” or “B1”.

Due to the quality of roads, such equipment is rare in Russia. But in Europe, quadricycles are extremely popular. There are two types of machines:

  • Lungs. These are cars equipped with a 50 cc engine. The maximum speed of the vehicle is 45 km/h.
  • Big ones. Such devices are equipped with a motor with a volume of more than 50 cc. Such cars are more reminiscent of Smart cars.

What is the difference between a quadricycle and an ATV can be determined even with the naked eye. The appearance of miniature cars hints at their low cross-country ability and power.

Difference between tricycle and quad bike

Children can be pleased with a tricycle, and adults with a stylish tricycle. This futuristic vehicle is a cross between a car and a motorcycle. But the main feature of the technology is the presence of three wheels. What are the similarities between an ATV and a tricycle?

  • Motorcycle handlebar.
  • Location of controls. Both cars have gas and brake on the steering wheel.
  • Saddle. The seat of the ATV and tricycle are identical. Of course, there are exceptions, but they depend on the imagination of the designers.

A tritsik differs from an all-terrain vehicle in a number of features:

  • Rights. For a four-wheeler, category “A1” is required, and for a three-wheeler, “B” or “B1”.
  • Patency. An all-terrain vehicle is designed for driving on difficult trails, and a tricycle is designed for walking and relaxing. A three-wheeled vehicle will not travel over rough terrain or mud.
  • Maximum speed. When developing all-terrain vehicles, the emphasis is on cross-country ability, and when producing a tricycle, on speed. Particularly powerful three-wheelers can accelerate to 200 km/h.

The main difference between an ATV and a quadricycle and a tricycle is the use of equipment on public roads. A four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle has some limitations, but its cousins do not.

What to choose?

Having understood the differences between an ATV and a quadricycle with a tricycle, we can definitely say that the technology is completely different. Each device has its own strengths and weaknesses, so the choice of machine depends on your needs.

For lovers of speed and drive, who prefer racing tracks and public roads, a tricycle is suitable. The device will give you the necessary adrenaline and energy boost. Despite its dimensions, the speed of the equipment is not inferior to many sports motorcycles.

Fans of calm and measured riding who are not chasing speed should pay attention to the quadricycle. Compact and maneuverable equipment fits perfectly into city traffic and allows you to drive almost anywhere. A tangible advantage of the car is a kind of roof that will protect the driver from dust and light rain.

To understand what a quadricycle and an all-terrain vehicle are, one look at the technology is enough. The appearance of the all-terrain vehicle hints at off-road driving and high power. An ATV is a real workhorse, with which you can not only transport cargo, but also go fishing. The only drawback of the technology is the restriction on the use of ATVs on public roads. But given the cross-country ability of the car, this will not be a problem.

Surely, you are already familiar with such a vehicle as an ATV... It turns out that a regular driver’s license is not suitable for driving it. And you will find out which ones are suitable below. We'll also talk about the different types of ATVs and even mention snowmobiles.

What category of rights is needed to drive an ATV and a tricycle?
On November 5, 2013, a new category “B1” appeared on driver’s licenses - tricycles and quadricycles.
We also remind you that the subcategory “B1” is entered automatically when exchanging old-style rights with the open category “B”. In other cases, for category “B1” you will have to study and take an additional exam.
This is of course all true, but there are some important nuances in determining the category of driver’s license required to drive such vehicles...
Let's try to figure it out.
What is the difference between categories “M” - moped, “A” - motorcycle and “B1” - tricycles?
According to the traffic rules, tricycles, as well as quadricycles with a motorcycle seat or motorcycle-type handlebars, having an unloaded weight not exceeding 400 kg (or 550 kg for vehicles intended for the transport of goods) ... and a maximum effective engine power not exceeding 15 kW.
It turns out that if the mass of your quadricycle (tricycle) is less than 400 kg and the engine power is less than 15 kW (20 hp), then according to the current traffic regulations, it is a motorcycle and is suitable for driving such vehicles. A license with category “A” is required.
With an unloaded mass of such a vehicle. more than 400 kg, the driver must have a license with an open subcategory “B1”.
And owners of light tricycles and quadricycles (with an engine capacity of no more than 50 cubic centimeters) must have a license with category “M” - moped, or have any other open category of driver’s license.
It is not yet possible to obtain a separate category “B1” (tricycles and quadricycles) or “M” (moped) due to the lack of a new program for taking exams in the traffic police for obtaining a license.
ATV and snowmobile licenses
ATVs are motorized off-road four-wheeled vehicles (all-terrain vehicles, all-terrain vehicles) that have a motorcycle-style seat and a motorcycle-type steering wheel, intended for driving off public roads.

The main document for an ATV is the Self-Propelled Vehicle Passport (PSM). Similar passports are also issued for tractors and other construction equipment, so an ATV can safely be called a mini tractor.

You can prepare for category “A1” at a relevant educational institution, for example, at our “Airport” driving school.
The exam for obtaining a tractor driver's license consists of theory and practice. The theory is accepted on tickets approved by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, and practice takes place in two stages on a closed site (tractor track).

Finally, it is worth recalling that according to the current traffic regulations, both quadricycles and ATVs are classified as motor vehicles. This means that, according to clause 2.1 of the traffic rules, their drivers are required to carry with them and submit for verification to police officers (traffic police) the documents required by law. There is a fine for not having the required documents.
If the vehicle is not registered in the prescribed manner and the driver cannot confirm ownership of such equipment, then it is subject to detention (placement in an impound lot).

ATVs have become quite a popular entertainment and even sport in recent years. Four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles are used both for extreme racing over impassable terrain and for a relaxing holiday with the family, which is why children’s models of such “cars” can also be found on sale today. This pleasure is not cheap (for example, Honda ATVs will cost from 450,000 to 750,000 rubles), but no specific skills are required to operate these motorcycle devices.

It is worth considering that to drive an all-terrain vehicle, an adult needs a category A1 license (the same is issued to tractor drivers). If we are talking about a children's electric ATV, then the question remains open. On the one hand, a child aged 16 must have a category M license, and on the other hand, a “toy” ATV can be ridden from the age of 4. In this case, the rule applies to all cars with a maximum engine capacity of up to 50 cc.

Of course, it is unlikely that anyone will fine you in a suburban area or in an open field in the village. But if the child ends up near the road, parents may face a fine of 5,000 to 15,000 rubles, so it is better to be vigilant.

Well, if you don’t want to get any rights, then just ride on specially designated and fenced areas, where you can enjoy your vacation without unnecessary delays.

How is a quadricycle different from an ATV?

The confusion and bewilderment are understandable, since amendments have appeared in the new traffic rules based on which there are two harmonious four-wheeled motorcycles. So, to understand this issue once and for all, just remember the following:

  • landing at quad bike carried out “on horseback”, and in quadricycle“car-like”, that is, an armchair or sofa acts as a seat;
  • the steering wheel in an ATV is motorcycle (bicycle), and in a quadricycle it is a “steering wheel”;
  • There are no pedals in the ATV; all functions are performed “motorcycle-style.” The quadricycle has an accelerator, brake and clutch, which are made as separate, independent levers.

Well, the last thing is the salon. The quadricycle has it, but the ATV does not. The first “toys” are less common, so we will talk specifically about “quads”, of which there are several types.

ATV classes

Today, there are several categories (classes) of four-wheeled motorcycles: utilitarian, sports and touring. Let's look at the features of all types in more detail.

Utilitarian

Such “cars” are among the heaviest, but at the same time they are by far the most popular. On utilitarian ATVs you can drive off-road and up mountain climbs without any problems. Thanks to their large weight, deep tread and high power, four-wheeled motorcycles can handle even the most difficult conditions. In addition, such models can be equipped with additional equipment, making mini-all-terrain vehicles very convenient assistants in the household. Of course, you won’t be able to use such a “toy” as a truck, but thanks to a power unit with a volume of 500 cc or more, you can perform most of the complex tasks. In addition, utilitarian all-terrain vehicles have independent suspension and disc brakes.

Healthy! Some models of utility ATVs can be equipped with crawler tracks.

Utilitarian ATVs are equipped with a 4x4 drive, and the wheels have a small diameter. Typically, such models are equipped with several luggage compartments (rear and front).

Sports

Based on the name of this category, it becomes clear why such all-terrain vehicles are needed. Most often, sports ATVs are used on specially prepared tracks, that is, the terrain seems to be impassable, but it is “designed” in such a way that the car does not get stuck. And this happens often, since the weight of a sports model rarely exceeds 300 kg.

But the “athletes” develop a much higher speed (about 145 km/h) when compared with utilitarian all-terrain vehicles. If we talk about the power of the power unit, then sports ATVs also win here, since instead of 500 cc, they can boast all 800 cc.

The drive of such a unit can only be on 2 wheels, the gearbox is manual, and the suspension is of an independent type with powerful shock absorbers. No additional equipment is provided for this type of ATV. The fact is that any additional settings will increase the weight of the four-wheeled motorcycle, and this, in turn, will affect the maneuverability of the machine.

Another difference between sports models and other types is the emergency check in the ignition system. If the driver is thrown out of the seat, the unit stalls.

It is possible to achieve high stability at high speed on sports ATVs due to the wide track.

Tourist

This type of ATV originated from the utilitarian one and is also considered quite popular in our country, where unfamiliar and difficult routes are a dime a dozen that literally beckon pioneers to conquer new lands.

If we talk about the distinctive features of tourist ATVs, it is worth noting the wheels with low pressure, thanks to which the vehicles can freely cross sand, snow, mud and other impassable surfaces. Unlike regular two-wheelers, four-wheelers are all-season.

The “tourists” have all-wheel drive, and the automatic transmission is equipped with a variator, thanks to which even a beginner can drive an ATV.

Most often there are no trunks on such models, or only free space is provided for them.

Among the positive aspects is space for a second passenger. Unlike other types, tourist ATVs are often produced as two-seaters.

This is about types and differences, but if you are choosing a mini-motorcycle for a child, then it is worth knowing some of the nuances of such machines.

Features of children's ATVs

Outwardly, these four-wheelers resemble adult models, except that the design is a little simpler and the engine is not as powerful. In addition, children's ATVs, videos of which you will find in the article, have a “parental control” function. It works on the following principle - with a special handle you can independently set the maximum possible speed of the machine in the range from 5 to 19 km/h. Also, children's ATVs are equipped with a remote engine shutdown mechanism and a starter key. The latter will allow you to avoid the situation if your child decides to go for a ride without the knowledge of his parents.

  • For children aged 3 to 10 years, gasoline models are available with a two-stroke engine (ICE), as well as with a 350-watt electric motor. With these “toys” a child will be able to ride to his heart’s content on asphalt, sand or paths for 5 hours.
  • For children 10 years of age or younger, larger riders, a two-stroke or four-stroke ATV designed to carry more weight is more suitable. By and large, these are almost adult models, equipped with turn signals, a speedometer, mirrors and more.

If you are afraid to put your child on a gasoline all-terrain vehicle, then an electric children's ATV (electric) is suitable for you. Such four-wheelers are considered safer, since they operate using electricity rather than gasoline. Usually one “charge” is enough for approximately 25-30 km.

  • Children from 3 to 10 years old can purchase a car with an engine capacity of no more than 49 cubic meters or an electric ATV.
  • For teenagers from 10 to 16, the permitted engine volume is 90 cc.
  • Older children (16 years and older) can operate more “serious” ATVs.

If we talk about cost, then the price for children’s models is not as “cosmic” as for adults, and a good car for a child can be bought from 15,000 to 50,000 rubles.

In custody

You should not choose an ATV for a child based on the “growth” principle, since a more powerful model can cause serious consequences. In addition, before placing your child on such a “toy,” give him instructions and explain how to operate the equipment in rough terrain. In all other respects, do not be afraid to instill in your child a love of driving. Learning to drive an ATV, a child from an early age begins to understand the seriousness of driving a machine.

ATVs and ATVs are a type of transport that rides on four wheels. But at the same time, there is a difference between an ATV and a quadricycle. The devices are practically the same visually, but have different capabilities and registration methods. Read more about the differences in the article below.

Actually ATVs grew up from a buggy at one time– four-wheeled vehicles with high cross-country ability. This type of equipment was mostly used for sports competitions and looked like a simplified version of a car with a powerful engine and suspension designed to overcome difficult terrain. An ATV is more like a motorcycle on four wheels: they use motorcycle handlebars, a riding style, and are not equipped with a cab.

In turn, a quadricycle is a vehicle with an open cabin, full-fledged seats designed for the driver to sit inside. This device is controlled using a car steering wheel.

Important! An ATV differs from an ATV not only in the landing method, the cabin and the type of control. According to GOST, the weight of the latter cannot exceed 400 kg, in addition, the maximum speed of the quadricycle is 25 km/h. The maximum speed of the ATV can exceed 150 km/h, and the weight starts from 50 kg and ends under a ton.

To put it simply, an ATV is closer to a motorcycle visually and in terms of control type, and a quadricycle is closer to a car. An example of the latter would be transport for moving around the golf course. Many ATVs can have 2 or more seats, while an ATV is designed to carry a maximum of two people. There is a difference between the devices, and often buyers do not see the difference, but face problems when registering the vehicle with the traffic police. Quadricycles in Russia have the standard GOST R 51815-200, quadricycles - GOST R 52008-2003.

A quadricycle is a vehicle for transporting several people at a lower speed than quad bikes. Such devices are suitable for transporting cargo and overcoming difficult terrain, but they are not designed for competitions and performing extreme stunts, which is obvious based on their low maximum speed.

What is a tricycle

The tricycle is in a separate class. This is a kind of intermediate option, the design of which provides three wheels. In terms of size, all devices are approximately the same, but differences may appear depending on the subtype.

ATVs are divided into utilitarian, sports, touring and children's. The utilitarian type is closer in width and length to quadricycles. These are the largest devices, as they must not only transport a person, but also cope with the transportation of cargo. Sports and touring models are on par with a tricycle in weight, size and speed. It can be said that they average in size, since here the emphasis is on speed and maneuverability, and this is not very convenient for large sizes. Children's devices are the smallest.

The dimensions of the ATV can be very different. On average they reach 2100*1200*1500 mm (length, width, height). Such equipment has high ground clearance and is mostly designed for use outside the city. A similar situation is observed with quadricycles. The difference is the tricycles. They closer in design to a motorcycle and can be used for the city, but, as practice shows, such a technique is not widely used in Russia.

Features of obtaining rights

It was mentioned above that driving any of the listed types of transport requires a license. To drive any of the vehicles listed above, you must have a B license with category AS or MS. The first implies the presence of a car steering wheel and seat (quadricycle), MS - a motorcycle steering wheel and seat (quad bike and tricycle). They were introduced in 2013 after amendments were made to the law on vehicles.

Important! Category B1 gives the right to drive a tricycle, quadricycle or quadricycle with an engine capacity of 50 cc and a weight of up to 550 kg. If the equipment has smaller parameters, then you need to get a license of category M. They allow you to drive ATVs with an engine capacity of up to 50 cubic meters and are issued from the age of 16.

If you have category B rights, then B1 is automatically assigned, marked AS. If class A rights were previously obtained, then B1 MS is assigned. If you do not have any license, you will need to complete training and pass exams, having first submitted an application and passed a medical examination to obtain a driving permit. If license does not have B1 mark, then you just need to contact the traffic police and ask them to indicate it. You can get a license from the age of 18, but you can undergo training and pass exams from the age of 14. Then you just have to wait until you reach adulthood.
