Disassembling the ignition switch of a VAZ 2106. Ignition switch in a VAZ car: purpose, design, functions, repair and replacement. The procedure for connecting wires to the ignition switch

It is a device without which starting the engine will be impossible. The same applies to VAZ 2106 cars. Below we suggest you understand the main malfunctions of the device, as well as the process of replacing the lock and contact group with photos and videos.

[Hide]

In what cases is it necessary to replace the ignition switch?

Replacing the contact group and installing the ignition switch

Now you can find out how, in accordance with the wire connection diagram shown in the photo, pinout and installation of a new group is carried out. As practice shows, it is this element that often causes malfunctions in the ignition switch. For correct pinout and connection in accordance with the diagram. First of all, you need to dismantle the spring ring, so the group can be removed by itself.

Then it is necessary to install the new element to the system body so that the groove of the group is mounted on the rod as accurately as possible; after these steps, the group is fixed using the same spring.

After connecting the new component, you need to correctly install the lock itself; to do this, follow these steps:

  1. First, you need to install the key in the lock, and then, as we did above, turn it to 0.
  2. The fastener is clamped and the switch is installed in the latch.
  3. In accordance with the diagram for the VAZ 2106, the wires are installed and connected.
  4. Then the plastic lining is installed on the steering system; with the help of five screws, the two parts are securely fixed.

To do everything correctly, use the detailed video instructions (the author of the video is Sergey Romanov).

Sorry, there are no surveys available at this time.

A lot of problems can arise with the ignition switch on the “six”. This includes oxidation of wires, jamming of larvae and much more. To deal with this, you need to know how to remove and connect the VAZ-2106 ignition switch. In principle, there is nothing complicated here, now you will see for yourself.

Preparatory work

Before proceeding directly to removing the ignition switch, it is necessary to perform a number of actions. First of all, you need to disconnect the negative battery. This way, all electrical systems will be de-energized, and you can safely begin work. After this, it is advisable to remove the covers. This is not difficult to do - you just need to have a screwdriver with you and apply a little effort.

After the casing has been dismantled, it is advisable to clean the surface of the lock from various types of contaminants. If you look carefully, you can find the wiring harness block. It needs to be disconnected from the contacts of the VAZ ignition switch. All work must be done carefully so as not to damage the wiring. As for the tools, we only need a flathead and Phillips screwdrivers, as well as a multimeter to check the functionality of the device. Now you can proceed directly to removing the device.

VAZ-2106: dismantling

After all the preparatory work, you can proceed to the most important part. To do this, we must insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to position “0”. Next, we need to unlock the steering wheel: the anti-theft device is turned on, therefore, we need to turn the steering wheel left and right together with the key, after which it will turn off.

Take a Phillips screwdriver and unscrew the mount to the bracket. There are two screws: one on one side of the lock, the second on the other. After we remove the screws, we will see the lock retainer in the bracket. To get the device, you need to push in the latch and pull out the ignition switch of the VAZ-2106 by hand. At this point the work can be considered completed. Next we need to understand the electrical circuit, detect and eliminate faults in the wiring, since this is where they most often arise. For this we will use a pre-prepared multimeter.

Lock diagram and check

First of all, you need to deal with the wiring. In principle, there is nothing particularly complicated here. When the key is in position one, a contact called 30-INT turns on. He is responsible for lighting, windshield wipers, and washers. Also in this position, contact 30/1-15 is activated. The circuits turn on the heater, heated rear window, turns, the generator winding is excited, etc. The carburetor valve and ignition system are also ready to start working.

As for the markings, you can see them on the wiring. It is also schematically depicted on the castle. To check the contact group, you must use an ohmmeter. The probes of the device are connected to the terminals of the ignition contacts. This way the switching is checked. If everything is in order, then at key positions 1, 2, 3, the resistance on the ohmmeter should not be higher than zero. If something is wrong, it grows. It is also worth noting that if there are problems, the contact group must be replaced. This is the diagram of the VAZ-2106 ignition switch, and as noted above, there is nothing complicated here.

ignition VAZ-2106

If the fault is hidden in the contact group, then it needs to be replaced.

You can do this as follows. There is a special groove in the ignition switch housing. Using a screwdriver, we pry it up and remove the retaining ring. After this, we can remove the contact group without any effort. If there are visible defects on it, then we throw it away immediately. If there are contaminations, you can clean them and then check their performance again. You can also clean contacts that oxidize during operation.

Let's figure out how to set up a new contact group. To do this, we need to align the groove on the ignition switch body with the protrusion on the contact group. At the same time, you need to combine the grooves and protrusions at the ends of the parts. After this, the switch is installed in the bracket, then the wires are connected. A blue wire with black stripes is connected to pin “15”, to “30/1” - brown, “30” - pink, INT - black, and to “50” - accordingly, a red wire.

Conclusion

We figured out how to connect the ignition switch of the VAZ-2106. What I would like to tell car enthusiasts is that if the device gets jammed, it is not necessary to immediately remove the device. For example, if this happened in winter, then it is likely that the cause was moisture that got on the larvae. This problem is eliminated with the help of VD-40 liquid or by heating the lock using a household hair dryer or similar devices.

The VAZ-2106 ignition switch does not require additional maintenance, but periodically it is still necessary to check the condition of the contacts and also remove contamination. This will ensure that it will serve you well and for a long time. But if trouble does happen, then you know how to check and change the lock.

When getting into a car, any driver turns the key in the ignition to start the engine. This simple action ensures that the starter receives voltage from the power source, as a result of which the engine crankshaft begins to turn and the engine starts. If a breakdown occurs with the ignition switch, further operation of the vehicle becomes impossible. However, many problems can be fixed with your own hands.

Ignition switch VAZ 2106

At first it may seem that the ignition switch of the VAZ 2106 is an insignificant detail. However, if you look at it, the mechanism is an integral part in any car, since it starts the engine and powers the electrical network. In addition to supplying voltage to the starter, electricity from the lock is supplied to devices that allow you to control certain parameters of the car, etc. When the vehicle is parked, the device de-energizes systems and devices.

Purpose and design

If we describe the purpose of the ignition switch in simple words, then this mechanism prevents the battery from being discharged through the on-board network and provides voltage only when necessary, i.e. during operation of the car.

The main elements of the ignition switch are: 1. - locking rod; 2 - body; 3 - roller; 4 - contact disk; 5 - contact sleeve; 6 - block

The ignition switch on the VAZ Six consists of the following elements:

  • locking rod;
  • frame;
  • roller;
  • contact disk;
  • contact sleeve;
  • block.

There are many wires connected to the lock mechanism. They are supplied from the battery and connect everything installed in the car into a single electrical circuit. When the key is turned, a circuit is closed from the “-” terminal of the power source to the ignition coil. The current passes through the wires to the ignition switch, and then is supplied to the coil and returns back to the positive terminal of the battery. When current flows through the coil, a voltage is generated in it, which is necessary to create a spark at the spark plugs. As a result, when the key closes the ignition circuit contacts, the engine starts.

The ignition switch is connected to the electrical circuit using wires with connectors at the ends. If the wires are connected to the mechanism using a chip (large round connector), then there should be no problems with the connection.

If the wires are connected separately, you must adhere to the following connection sequence:

  • pin 15 - blue with a black stripe (ignition, interior heating and other devices);
  • pin 30 - pink wire;
  • pin 30/1 - brown;
  • pin 50 - red (starter);
  • INT - black (dimensions and headlights).

Below is the electrical diagram for connecting the lock:

Description

The ignition switch of the VAZ 2106 is made in the shape of a cylinder and consists of an electrical (contacts) and a mechanical (core) part. The mechanism also has a protrusion for fixing the steering wheel. On one side of the device there is a recess for the key, on the other there are contacts for connecting electrical wires. The two parts of the lock are connected to each other by means of a leash.

The ignition switch provides not only rotation of the contact group rotation mechanism, but also locks the steering wheel when the key is removed from the lock. Locking is possible due to a special rod, which, when turning the key to the right, partially enters the device body. When the key rotates counterclockwise, the element extends, and when it is removed, the part enters a special hole in the steering column. The locking mechanism is accompanied by a loud click when the key is removed.

"The lock

Since each key has its own tooth shape, this is an additional measure of protection against theft. Therefore, if you try to start the engine with another key, it will not be possible.

contact Group

The contacts of the VAZ 2106 ignition switch have the form of a washer with leads for connecting electrical wiring. On the inside of the washer there are conductive contacts of these terminals, as well as a movable element that rotates under the influence of the lock mechanism. When the position of this element changes, certain contacts are closed, thereby ensuring power supply to the terminals of the product in question, connected to the closed coins.

How does it work

The ignition switch of the “six” is located in the car interior to the left of the steering column and is hidden by decorative elements. On the driver's side, the mechanism has a key hole. There are several marks on the front surface of the lock - 0, I, II and III. Each of them has its own purpose.

The “0” mark is a position that ensures that all devices powered by the ignition switch are turned off; the key can also be removed in this position.

Electrical devices such as a brake light, a cigarette lighter, or interior lighting operate regardless of the position of the key in the lock, since they are constantly supplied with battery power.

Mark I - in this position, power is supplied to the on-board network. Voltage is supplied to the headlights, dashboard, and ignition system. In this case, the key is fixed and there is no need to hold it.

Mark II - in this position of the lock, voltage from the battery begins to flow to the starter to start the power unit. In this case, there is no locking, so the driver holds the key until the engine starts. As soon as the engine starts running, the key is released and it takes position I.

Mark III - parking. In this position, all electrical devices connected to the on-board network are de-energized, and a latch is inserted into the hole in the steering wheel column, which prevents the theft of the vehicle.

Find out about the malfunctions of the VAZ-2106 instrument panel:

Ignition switch problems

Problems are possible with both the mechanical and electrical parts of the device.

The key won't turn

One of the lock malfunctions is a problem with the key, when it turns tightly or does not turn at all. Quite often the situation ends with the key breaking, as a result of which part of it remains inside the mechanism. A solution to the problem of a jamming lock can be the use of a penetrating lubricant, for example, WD-40. But do not forget that this is just a temporary solution and the switch will still have to be replaced in the near future.

Video: replacing a lock if the key breaks

Devices do not function

If such a problem is observed when the key is turned in the lock, but the instruments on the dashboard do not show “signs of life,” this may indicate damage to the contacts of the mechanism, as a result of which they do not fit together tightly enough. The malfunction is solved by replacing the contact group or simply by cleaning the contacts with fine sandpaper. It is advisable to check how tightly the connectors fit on the contacts - they may need to be tightened with pliers.

The starter does not turn on

If the lock is malfunctioning, problems with starting the starter may also occur. The reason is damage to the switch contacts or failure of the contact group. As a rule, the malfunction is typical for the contacts that supply power to the starter. The problem manifests itself as follows: the starter does not start or it takes several attempts to turn it on. To determine whether there is indeed a fault in the contacts, you can check the voltage at the terminals using a test lamp or multimeter.

If it is discovered that the contacts have become unusable, it is not necessary to completely change the lock - you can only replace the washer with the contacts.

Ignition switch repair

To carry out repair work or replace the lock, it must be removed from the car. Tools you will need:

  • Phillips screwdriver;
  • awl.

How to remove the lock

After preparing the tools, you can begin dismantling, which is performed in the following order:

  1. Remove the negative terminal from the battery.
  2. Remove the decorative linings of the steering column.
  3. To avoid confusion with the wires during reassembly, write down on a piece of paper or mark with a marker which wire should be connected where, and then remove the wires.
  4. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the lower fastener of the lock.
  5. Insert the key into the device and turn it to the “0” position, which will disable the steering wheel locking mechanism. Immediately, using a thin awl, press the latch, by means of which the switch is held in place.
  6. By pulling the key towards you, the lock is removed.

How to disassemble a lock

During the repair process, as a rule, the “larva” or contact group is changed. To remove the washer with contacts, you will need a minimum of tools: a screwdriver, a hammer and a tool. Disassembly consists of the following steps:

Getting to the core of the castle is somewhat more difficult:

Video: repairing the ignition switch on a “classic”

What kind of lock can I put?

On classic Zhiguli cars, ignition switches of the same design were installed, but it should be taken into account that cars produced before 1986 were equipped with locks with 7 pins, and then with 6. If you need to replace a lock or washer with contacts with 7 pins, and find they failed, you can simply buy the second option and connect two wires together (15/1+15/2), and then connect them to terminal 15.

Installing the "Start" button

Some VAZ 2106 owners install a button for ease of starting the engine. It is connected via the starter power circuit to the break in the red wire, which goes to terminal 50 of the ignition switch. In this case, the engine starts as follows:

  1. The key is inserted into the lock.
  2. Turn it to position I.
  3. The starter is started by pressing the button.
  4. When the engine starts, the button is released.

To stop the power unit, you must turn the key counterclockwise. A slightly different option for connecting the button is also possible, so that with its help you can not only start the engine, but also turn it off. For these purposes you will need the following parts:

  • headlight relay RS 711;
  • starter relay 113.3747–10 or 90.3747–10.

According to the diagram, when the button is pressed, power is supplied to the headlight relay, and after the contacts are closed, to the starter. When starting the power unit, the button is released, thereby opening the contacts of the starter relay and breaking its power circuit. If you press the button again, the contacts of the switching device open, the ignition circuit is broken and engine operation stops. The second option for using the button is called “Start-Stop”.

Even a car owner who is encountering such a problem for the first time can replace or repair the ignition switch on a VAZ 2106. To carry out the work you will need a minimum of tools and following step-by-step instructions. The main thing is to connect the wiring to the lock in accordance with the diagram.

Let's start with the fact that the ignition switch includes mechanical and electrical parts. The first is made in the body of the device, and the second part is made separately from the terminal block. In use, failures are associated equally with both parts of the ignition switch, with the terminal block accounting for a slightly higher percentage of failures.

Please note that any work on the electrical part must be carried out provided that the negative terminal is removed. This is especially important if you need to check the work of the consumer. Let's take a closer look at mechanical and electrical failures.

Mechanical part

Often, mechanical failure of the ignition switch is provoked by:

  • tight turning of the ignition key;
  • jamming in one of the positions. As a rule, such a problem leads to a broken ignition key, which, in turn, requires additional expenses for purchasing a new part.

Basically, these problems arise due to poor assembly of the ignition switch from unscrupulous manufacturers. So that the product does not have to be changed frequently, you need to install a reliable and durable part.

Electrical part

Even if the mechanical part of the ignition switch is fully operational, the terminal block still often fails. You can always replace it, since such a spare part is sold in any car store.

The terminal part often burns out itself or its contacts, which connect certain power supply circuits, burn out. It also happens that the central plastic insert melts, which opens and closes some contacts at different positions of the ignition key. This overheating is provoked by holding the key in the “starter” position for a long time, when the driver cannot start the engine of his vehicle for a long time.

In such cases, it is necessary to purchase a new terminal block, not an ignition switch.

It is very important that the connection remains unchanged. If this is your first time replacing, you need to look at the bottom of the ignition switch and sketch out the colors of the wire and the terminals to which they are connected. Each of them on the block has its own number, so it is very convenient to write down the wire color and terminal number so as not to confuse anything.

How to connect wires: diagram

To connect to wires, the terminal block has the following pins:

  • "15";
  • "thirty";
  • "30/1";
  • "50";
  • "INT".

Read also: How to change the steering column on a VAZ-2106

A blue cable must be installed on terminal “15”, and it must be double. At “30/1” there is a brown version, at “30” – pink, at “50” – red or purple, at the “INT” terminal – black and always double. Terminals “30” and “50” are responsible for starting the starter, which, if the lock fails, can be connected to start the engine in order to successfully get to a service station or auto parts store.

Typically, the terminal block box will provide instructions that clearly explain how to connect the cables. By following all the rules exactly, you can do this work yourself, without contacting technical service. Those who find it difficult to understand the instructions will still have to turn to the experts so as not to harm their own car, since one wrong action can damage certain elements of the ignition system.

VAZ 2106 car and its ignition switch

Unit for car ignition system

Sometimes when operating a domestic VAZ car, the following situation arises: you get into the car, insert the key into the ignition, turn the key to position I, but the indicator lights on the dashboard do not light up. If you don't notice this and try to start the engine, the starter doesn't turn or even click. Experienced drivers in such cases immediately check the serviceability of the lock.

The VAZ classic ignition switch consists of two parts: a mechanical (secret) into which the key is inserted, and a contact group to which the wires are connected. The mechanical part is inseparable from the body, and if it fails, the lock must be replaced. The contact group is removable; it is inserted into the back of the device and secured with a spring ring. Due to the simplicity of the design, the ignition switch of a VAZ 2106 car breaks down extremely rarely, almost as rarely as the engine or gearbox.

There is only one malfunction that may require replacing the VAZ classic ignition switch assembly - a breakdown in the secret part mechanism. You can perform the operation of replacing the device yourself, even in an open field, in 10 minutes.

Removing a faulty device

To remove the ignition switch of a VAZ 2106, the following tools are required:

  • positive screwdriver;
  • slotted screwdriver;
  • awl.

Replacing the ignition unit

If you do not have an awl, to dismantle the device, you can use a long thin nail with a cross section of 1.5-2 mm with a wide head or a screwdriver to unscrew small screws from the body of mobile phones.

Before carrying out the main procedure, it is necessary to remove the negative terminal from the battery. Despite the fact that a 12-volt current is practically harmless to the health of an adult, when removing the device, you can accidentally short-circuit the wires, which, in turn, can lead to the failure of important electrical equipment of the car.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. To begin, insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it 90 degrees to the “0” position. This is necessary so that the pin that holds the steering shaft from turning fits slightly into the secret part and does not interfere with dismantling.
  2. Next, you need to remove the plastic steering column cover. To do this, sequentially unscrew the 5 screws connecting the lower and upper parts of the casing.
  3. Then carefully lift the upper part of the steering column housing and pull it up. After this, remove both parts of the casing to the side.
  4. Next, find and unscrew the screws securing the device itself. There are two of them, they are located at the bottom of the switch, on the right and left.
  5. Then disconnect the wires from the ignition switch contacts.
  6. Next, find a flat slot on the bracket to the left of the device, insert an awl there and forcefully press the latch with it.
  7. After this, you can remove the device from the bracket by prying it with a slotted screwdriver.

If, despite all the efforts made, the switch “refuses” to come out of the bracket, it means that the latch is not pressed all the way. You need to press the latch with an awl, and then move the key slightly left and right without turning it. The latch will compress completely, and all that remains is to pull out the switch.

Replacing the contact group and installing the ignition switch

Often the cause of a malfunction of the ignition switch is the burning of the contact group. Replacing the contact group is very easy. It is enough to remove the spring ring using a slotted screwdriver, and the contact group will fall out on its own. After this, you need to insert the new part into the device body so that the groove of the contact group fits exactly onto the rod of the secret part, and secure it in the device body with a spring ring. After this, you can install the ignition switch in place.

Installation algorithm:

  1. First you need to insert the key into the lock and turn it to position “0”.
  2. Press the latch and insert the switch into the bracket.
  3. Then you should connect the wires correctly.
  4. Install the casing on the steering column, fasten the upper and lower parts of the casing with screws.

Where should the wires be attached?

The hardest part about installing the switch is connecting the ignition switch to the wiring. Lucky are those VAZ 2106 owners whose wires to the switch are connected through a special block. This block can be connected with your eyes closed.

If your car does not have a special block, a colored wiring diagram will help you correctly connect the wires to the switch.

The color of the arrows shown in the diagram corresponds to the color of the wires. Please note that the wiring of older cars may have an orange wire instead of a pink one. Good luck with the renovation!

Do-it-yourself installation of the ignition switch for a VAZ 2106 with photo

Like any car, the VAZ 2106 has strengths and weaknesses that are familiar to many car enthusiasts. Intensive use, bad roads, harsh climate do their job slowly but surely. As they say, nothing lasts forever - parts wear out, one way or another they have to be replaced. Many car owners prefer to do feasible repairs themselves. And everyone has heard about the periodic breakdown of a small but very important part - the ignition switch. If your lock is faulty, then it won’t hurt you to acquire such a useful skill as installing a VAZ 2106 ignition switch.

Zhiguli

It’s not without reason that they say: the new is the well-forgotten old. The VAZ 2106, the well-known “six”, has been one of the most popular and popular domestically produced cars since the times of the Soviet Union. Over the entire production period of this model, over 4.3 million cars were produced and assembled at various factories. A real workhorse, it’s not for nothing that she still has many admirers. Until now, lively “sixes” in large numbers plow the automotive spaces of the CIS countries and neighboring countries, as well as beyond. Of course, even an old woman can get into trouble.

Structure and purpose of the ignition switch

The ignition switch (lock) on all “classic” models, including the “six”, is absolutely similar in its structure and design. Let's consider its structure and principle of operation.

Ignition switch (lock) device:

Castle structure
  1. Locking rod
  2. Frame
  3. Roller
  4. Contact disc
  5. Contact sleeve
  6. Block
  7. Protrusion of the contact part.

The lock mechanism is connected to many wires. They continue from the battery, connecting all the electrical devices of the car into a single chain. When you turn the ignition key, the electrical circuit is closed from the “-” terminal of the battery to the ignition coil.

As a result, the current passes through the wires to the ignition switch, through its contacts it is directed to the induction coil, after which it returns back to the “+” terminal. As electricity passes through the coil, it generates high voltage, which it transmits to the spark plug. Therefore, the key closes the contacts of the ignition circuit, thereby starting the car engine.

The ignition switch, like all spare parts, requires repair or replacement over time. And any car enthusiast will be able to cope with this, having a minimum amount of necessary knowledge.

Removing the old ignition switch

Before installing a new lock, you need to make room for it by disconnecting the old one.

Tools and Precautions

To do this we need a simple set of tools: a screwdriver and an awl.

Tools

Before you start work, do not forget about basic safety rules - disconnect the battery (remove the negative terminal).

Disconnecting the battery

Removing the ignition switch

After preparing a safe workplace, we can safely get down to business.

Using a screwdriver, unscrew the 5 screws of the steering column switch housing. After this, remove the upper and lower casing elements. Unscrew the two screws that secure the ignition switch to the housing.

Removing the casing

We insert the ignition key into the lock and turn it to the “off” (0) position to unlock the anti-theft system. To remove the lock from its seat, we find a small round hole in its left side.

Unlock

We take an awl and insert it into the hole, pressing the latch with it. At the same time, remove the ignition switch, pushing it towards you with your hand.

We take out the lock

Disconnect the wires from the terminals. If the coil of wire ends with a chip, then this greatly simplifies the task. This means that you do not have to label the wires or remember the diagram of their connection to the lock terminals for later connection. So, just disconnect the chip with the wires.

Installing a new lock

The ignition switch is disconnected. Now we can start connecting the new one.

We connect the contact group of wires

If you are lucky enough to become the owner of a chip that closes the wires, then simply connect it to the new lock.

Connecting the chip

If there is no chip, then we connect each wire separately. We take the terminal block of the new ignition switch in our hands so that the only double terminal located on it is on the right and in a vertical position. The top compartment of the double terminal corresponds to the double black wire.

Wiring pinout by color

Next we move counterclockwise. The next one to connect is the pink wire, followed by the double blue one, then the brown one, and the last one is the red one. In addition, you can figure out the location of the wires on the terminal block using the digital marks that mark the block itself. There is a designation near each terminal; let’s look at how the terminals correspond to the colors of the wires:

  • 1NT – black double wire
  • 30 – pink wire
  • 15 – double blue wire
  • 30/1 – brown wire
  • 50 – red wire.

The lower part of the double terminal remains empty - as it should be. Contacts are connected.

Back of the castle

We install the lock in place and finish the job.

Now it's time to lock the new lock in its original position - to the left of the steering wheel.

So, insert the key into the lock and fix it in position “0”. Then we take the lock and insert it into its original position, while “sinking” the side lock with your fingers. Now the lock is in place, so we can tighten the mounting screws and install the decorative protective cover.

Checking the operation of the new lock

The installation work is completed. Now you need to make sure that everything in the car is working properly. First we connect the battery. If the system is operating correctly, when the key is set to position “0”, all systems must be turned off. In position “I”, power is supplied to the engine management system, generator, headlights, warning lamps, washers and wipers, power windows and control devices.

In position “II”, voltage is supplied to the same systems, and in addition, the starter starts. If the lock is operating correctly, the locking rod of the anti-theft mechanism will extend and retract when the key is moved from position “0” (off) to position “I” and back.

As you can see, there is nothing supernatural - you can replace the ignition switch yourself, without turning to a car repair shop for help. The main thing is a little patience and knowledge, and you will master simple car repairs. And the “six” will delight you with its faithful service for a long time. Good luck on the roads!

Ignition switch VAZ 2106: how to remove, install

The ignition switch connects and services many of the vehicle's electrical circuits. The operation of entire groups of voltage consumers depends on its serviceability. The device performs several important functions:

  1. Controls the operation of the ignition system;
  2. It is part of the anti-theft system;
  3. When transporting a faulty vehicle in tow, it allows you to turn on the hazard warning lights.

Owners of the “six” are most often interested in the following issues related to the lock:

  • ignition switch connection diagram for VAZ 2106;
  • replacing the ignition switch on a VAZ 2106;
  • how his contact group changes.

Let's look at these topics in order.

Ignition switch circuit

  1. Battery
  2. Starter
  3. Generator
  4. Relay in mounting block
  5. Egnition lock
  6. Start relay

The electrical wiring connected to the mechanism works according to the following scheme:

There are four lock positions.

Zero position. With it, all electrical networks are turned off, except for two terminals, indicated in the diagram in dark color.

First position. Dimensions, windshield wipers, and heater fan receive power.

Second position. Additionally, power is supplied to the ignition system, indicators and buttons on the dashboard, turn signals and starter.

Third position. Only the dimensions, windshield wipers and horn continue to receive power.

The lock mechanism interacts with several electrical circuits that combine the vehicle's electrical appliances into a single circuit. When we turn the key, voltage from the negative terminal of the battery is supplied to the ignition coil.

Since the lock mechanism is regularly used by the driver, some of its elements wear out and fail. Sometimes all you need to do is spray the lock cylinder with WD-40. However, the effect may not last long and repair work will still be required in the near future.

The ignition switch is designed as follows:

The simplest thing is to replace the faulty lock with a new one. The cost of this part for the VAZ 2106 car is low. The replacement must begin with the process of removing the old mechanism.

How to remove the lock

If the latch cannot be fully pressed, you need to simultaneously slightly turn the key left and right, without turning it all the way. This will allow you to find a position in which the latch will be squeezed out completely and the lock will easily come out. Please note that anti-theft may also interfere. It moves with the key. If you turn the key to the starter position, it will take the most convenient position for removing the lock.

Another important tip: mark how the wires were connected. This will help you avoid any confusion when installing a new device.

Replacing the contact group

Sometimes there is no need to completely change the lock mechanism. It is enough just to change the contact group.

It is located on the back of the mechanism. Attached to the body with a spring ring. You can try to remove it by hand or using a screwdriver.

We film the group itself. It consists of two plastic rings that have built-in current-carrying tracks. There is a spring inside the ring.

Over time, carbon deposits form on these tracks, which leads to failure. There is no point in messing around with this soot. It's easier to buy a new group in the store. Its cost for a VAZ 2106 does not exceed 50 rubles.

Please note that there are different models. On some, the starter contact is attached so that when you turn the key, the contact bends. This leads to quick breakdowns. It is better to choose a model on which the contact is rigidly installed.

Installing a new part is easy. Alternately move the wires from the previous part, choosing the correct contacts. Place the key in the zero position, turn the top of the group to the left until it stops and insert it into the lock. Make sure that the blade inside the body fits into a special groove. Snap and slide on the snap ring.

Installing the ignition switch

After you have replaced the contact group or bought a new lock, it needs to be returned to its place. And this needs to be done as correctly as possible. We offer the following sequence of actions that will help you easily connect the ignition switch on the VAZ 2106:

After all the work has been completed, you can connect the negative terminal to the battery and check the functionality of the mechanism. Do not forget that when replacing the ignition switch, the VAZ must be disconnected from the power supply.

The ignition switch contact group is the connection point for many of the vehicle's electrical circuits. Therefore, if it malfunctions, entire groups of consumers may fail at once. Let's figure out how to change this part on the VAZ "six".

Contact group of the ignition switch on a VAZ-2106

The contact group on the VAZ-2106 is inserted into the ignition switch at the rear. It is secured in the lock body with a spring ring, which, entering a special groove, tightens the group and prevents it from falling out. Pulling it out of the lock is very simple - you just need to disconnect the spring ring with your fingers or a screwdriver. It is very important to disconnect the battery before doing this! Otherwise, it’s inevitable, and it’s not far from a fire. Another important fact is that it can be extremely difficult to put the ring back on, so it is advisable to remove the group with the lock removed. Read about this in the article:. Here we will deal only with the contact group.

The spring ring is easiest to fix with the ignition switch removed

After the spring ring is removed, the contact group can be pulled out of the lock body. It consists of two plastic rings with current-carrying tracks and a spring inside. During operation, carbon deposits may form on the tracks and their contacts, which causes the group to fail. In addition, there have been cases of abrasion of the metal tracks in just one year of use! In this case, the group is full of sawdust, and the surface of the tracks has deep grooves from the contacts. Question to the manufacturer...

A new contact group for the VAZ “Classic” (and it is the same for all classic models) is inexpensive, about 50 rubles. In this case, it is advisable to choose a group in which the starter contact is mounted rigidly on the track. There are contact groups with a starter contact in the form of a floating strip of metal that bends every time the key is moved to the starter position. The problem here is that this strip breaks off within a few months. Determining the starter contact is very simple - when purchasing a group, turn its upper part until the moment of resistance begins (a spring comes into action, which returns the ignition key from the starter position), and then turn it further (the starter is turned on). The contact, which closes only in this position, is the starter contact.

In the depths of the lock you can see the same “spade” that should fit into the groove of the contact group

Installing the group into the lock is very simple. One at a time, move the wires from the old group to the new one, without mixing up the contacts. Turn the key in the lock to a position where it can be pulled out. Turn the top of the new group as far to the left as possible and insert it into the lock. Inside the lock body there is an axis with a flat blade, which transmits rotation from the key to the upper disk of the contact group. It is necessary that this blade fits into the groove on the disk. If the contact group has entered the lock so much that the groove for the spring fastening ring is visible, then the blade is connected to the groove and the ring can be snapped into place.

As mentioned above, if you install a new group without removing the lock, you will have to suffer. It is very difficult to snap the ring into place, but it is still possible. The main thing is to make sure that the ring actually fits into the groove and does not touch the contacts of the group.

Before connecting the battery, be sure to put the car in neutral gear. This will protect you from accidentally turning on the starter and moving the car. After connecting the negative terminal to the battery, check that all equipment is operating correctly in accordance with the positions of the key in the ignition switch. If everything works correctly, then the replacement of the ignition switch contact group on the VAZ-2106 was carried out successfully.
