Initially, the debut generation copied the characteristics of the KIA Sonata. Under the hood of the first version there were not the most economical units (2.0, 2.4, 2.5 and 2.7 liters). They worked with both a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. The 2.0 and 2.4 engines cover the first hundred kilometers in 9.7 and 9.3 seconds. respectively. The maximum acceleration of these installations is up to 202 km/h. Fuel consumption: in urban conditions 11.0-12.0 liters, on the highway 7.0-8.0, in mixed mode - 9.5-10.6.

- Stanislav, Orenburg. I have driven quite a few Asian purebred cars. Now I've settled on a 2002 KIA Optima with a 2.0 engine. I’ll say right away that there simply can be no complaints about its consumption. On the highway - 7.5 liters, but in the city no more than 10 liters. And it doesn’t matter whether the climate control or the stove is on.
- Sergey, Perm. Optima 2.4 on an automatic, built in 2003. I got the restyle. It seems to be old, but the appearance is not the most disgusting, and the proportions are normal. Although I am mostly pleased with the efficiency and practicality here. With a full interior, with air conditioning and traffic lights, I spend some 11-12 liters in the city. On the highway this figure drops by a third.
- Mikhail, Moscow. I won’t say that I enjoy the drive and speed, but my Korean quickly reaches 140 km/h. I took a 2001 model with a 2.0 liter engine on the handle. There are no special jerks or jolts when dialing or switching. It eats, as befits an average sedan, about 10 in a mixed rhythm.
- Alexander, Kirov. I bought an Optima in 2010 on an AT (engine capacity 2.4 liters). At that time, the car was 8 years old, but in terms of comfort it would not be inferior to some new budget foreign cars. Plus, cheap consumables, decent assembly and does not act up on 92-octane gasoline. In a slow city it consumes about 11 liters, but usually the consumption does not exceed 9.5 liters.
- Pavel, Balashikha. Optima I simply floats along the highway and does not destroy fuel very quickly. Engine 2.4 with automatic transmission, model year: 2003. On average, 120-130 km/h produces 8.5-9 liters. I would like to fit 12 liters in the city, but in reality even at 60-70 km/h without air conditioning and with one passenger it comes out to 13.2 liters. Perhaps the machine takes on a lot.

The new version was presented to the auto world in 2005. A diesel variation was added to the line of power plants in addition to the gasoline classic. The second generation reaches the 100 km/h mark in 10.2 seconds (for 2.0 l) and in 9.3 seconds (for 2.4 l). The maximum acceleration for the 2.0 and 2.4 units is 201 km/h and 210 km/h, respectively. The fuel consumption range in urban conditions is 9.8-10 liters, on the highway – 6.7-6.9, and in mixed mode – 7.9-8.4.

- Konstantin, Tver. I bought a 3-year-old Optima 2007 manual with a 2-liter engine. Considered a peer among the Japanese. In particular, I looked closely at the Toyota Camry. I chose the Korean, and I don’t really regret it. There are enough dynamics, and there are no questions about comfort either. The only trouble is winter consumption. It increases to 12.5 liters in the city, although in the summer it stays within 10-10.5 liters per 100 km.
- Mikhail, Moscow. Optima is extremely sensitive to driving style. I often go to visit relatives in the south. For example, moving from Krasnodar to Rostov (about 300 km) at 120 km/h took 18 liters. And exactly the same road to the opposite end, but at 150-170 km/h already took 25 liters. Build in 2008, 2 liter engine.
- Alexey, Cheboksary. The purchase was made in 2007. Optima II 2.4 liter automatic. Among the shortcomings: weak noise and sluggish acceleration from traffic lights. In terms of consumption, everything is neutral - 12.3 liters on city roads is not particularly pleasing, but not too upsetting either. Of course, if I traveled a lot, I would choose a more economical option.
- Dmitry, Voronezh. KIA Optima II 2009 manual, 2.0 liters. If you adapt the Korean a little to the terrible roads, you get a very interesting option. After the purchase, I immediately changed the struts and made a high-quality Shumka. There are no questions about consumption. I don’t drive on the highway (110-120 km/h) and don’t exceed 80 km/h in the city. That's why I fit in 10 liters.
- Evgeniy, Kazan. In 2008, I bought a new Optima for long-distance travel for work. As a result, I drove almost 90 thousand km in 2 years. To be honest, I loved the sedan with all my heart. It goes smoothly on the highway at 150-170 km/h, and holds the road excellently. By the way, 13.7-14.2 liters are spent at this rate. Not weak, but quickly and comfortably. Moreover, I drive most of the time at 110-120 km/h and here the consumption is exactly 2 times lower.
KIA Optima III
Technical data
The 3rd version of the Optima was demonstrated at the New York Auto Show in 2010. The main units are still considered to be 2.0 and 2.4 liter petrol units. The 2.0-liter unit takes off to 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds. Exactly the same Optima, but with a stronger “heart” (2.4 liters) reaches the same mark in 9.1 seconds. Maximum acceleration is up to 210 km/h in both cases. Fuel consumption: in urban conditions 11.2 liters, on the highway – 6.0-6.2, in mixed mode – 7.9-8.1.
Owners about consumption
- Vladimir, St. Petersburg. In terms of design, the car will give any competitor a head start. The range of options is also solid. I took the 12th year assembly complete with a 2-liter engine and AT. I'm glad it picks up the first 80 km/h. Then, however, the acceleration slows down a little. The Koreans apparently didn’t bother too much about the engine. Especially with efficiency. 10.7 liters crawls out in a mixed mixture, taking into account the climate and AT.
- Alexey, Ivanovo. Kia Optima 2.4 MT. I don’t want to complain, but such a sedan should not consume 15 liters per hundred square meters. Yes, even in a city with average traffic jams, even with winter heating and a stove, but 15 liters is too much. If we take the average figure, then it is around 12.4-12.7 liters. Not bad for a sedan with average capacity. Class of 2013.
- Sergey, Moscow. I took a 2013 Optima III on an automatic with a 2.4 liter engine. I drive aggressively and don't skimp on fuel. Lew is 95th, and on holidays even 98th. It never came out more than 14.7 liters. We can say that I get the maximum out of the engine, both on a smooth highway and in the city bustle. Previously there was a Lexus GS 350. So, the Korean “gives it a light” according to the speed data.
- Alexander, Rostov. Before I bought a 2-liter Kia Optima in 2014, I didn’t really like the Korean auto industry. The design is gorgeous, the trunk is huge, there are plenty of blind spot systems, etc. In terms of driving performance, the only thing that’s a little frustrating is the steering (it’s a bit heavy). And in terms of consumption, I like it better on the highway - 6.8 liters. Well, the city takes about 10.5 liters, if you don’t accelerate.

In 2015 in New York, the sedan once again pampered the public with a fresh appearance. Under the hood there is a good selection of mostly petrol units. The only diesel option is a 1.7 liter unit. If you don’t take into account the “charged kopeck piece”, then a regular 2.0 or 2.4 liter engine accelerates to hundreds in 9.5 seconds. Maximum acceleration is 210 km/h. Fuel consumption in urban conditions is 10.4-12.5 liters, on the highway - 5.8-6.3, in mixed mode - 7.0-8.1.

- Sergey, Kolomna. The fresh 2016 Optima 2.0 manual gave me mixed feelings. It seems to be beautiful and sporty, but there is no delight in turns and when avoiding potholes. Once I could barely hold my car after driving around a regular pothole at 80 km/h. And since the car is completely new, I don’t tear the engine. Therefore, I keep my consumption within 10 liters even in the city.
- Vladimir, Astrakhan. Optima 2016 with 2.4 AT. I love smooth, straight highways. Then you can turn off the gas and enjoy the speed. True, you have to pay at the gas station, because 14.2 liters per hundred square meters is quite expensive. A regular trip to work around the city takes 9.7-10 liters.
- Anna, Sergach. I never bothered about fuel. I looked more at appearance, comfort and control. In the new Optima IV, all these characteristics are at their best. Maybe the consumption of 9 liters of gasoline in the city is high, but I think this figure is normal. On the highway you get completely ridiculous numbers (6.2-6.5 liters). By the way, I almost forgot, I have a 2.0 liter engine.
- Anatoly, Kazan. Optima 2.4 liter (2016 onwards). Anyone who saves every penny and drives at 60 km/h should take a closer look at small cars. And my Korean is ready to take off, accelerate to 180 km/h and take turns at a decent speed. For this I feed him 98 fuel. I don’t regret 13 liters per 100 km. They are worth the buzz I feel.

- Sergey, Naberezhnye Chelny. I chose the Optima sedan with a 2.4 liter engine and an automatic transmission. Year of manufacture: 2014 (3rd generation after restyling). Optima doesn’t show anything special in terms of appetite. In the city it consumes 12 liters, but on the highway the consumption drops to 8.2 liters. I would like to come up with something else with the noise - acceleration to hundreds, and there is a decent noise walking around the cabin.
- Alexander, Moscow. Kia Optima III equipped with 2.0 MT. Build 2010. It quickly picks up 120-130 km/h, and then there is a slight dip. Not to say that I'm complaining, but I would like to easily accelerate to 160 km/h on the highway. By the way, at 130 km/h the consumption jumps to 10.2 liters. In the city the numbers are similar, but there it’s always 10.5-11.2 liters in 2nd-3rd gear, and on the highway if you don’t drive it it will be around 6-6.5 liters.
- Artem, Orenburg. I bought a sedan from a friend with a mileage of 115,000 km. Motor 2.0 AT 2008 (Kia Optima II updated). Despite the years, Kia still shows good speed talents today. At the same time, with air conditioning and an average speed of 75-80 km/h, the car consumes up to 10 liters. No problems in winter either. -25 degrees is not the limit for Optima. True, it takes 10-15 minutes to warm up, and this is an extra consumption of up to 12-13 liters in the city.
- Victor, Chelyabinsk. I have an old Optima 2001 with a 2.4 MT engine (149 horses). Even in the first generation of the model, the Koreans did a good job on the engine - I did not expect such agility and at the same time economy. I fill up 20 liters in the city. They are enough for more than 220 km. Well, on the highway the sedan shoots up to 120 km/h seconds, probably in 10-12. Consumption on the highway is around 7-7.5 liters.
- Nikolay, Astrakhan. Restyled Kia Optima III (2.0 manual, 150 hp, 2015). There is a feeling that the Asians made a little mistake with the steering. Somehow the car turned out to be clumsy. But the acceleration is impressive. And your wallet doesn’t empty out so quickly. With a full load (5 people) in a hot climate, I spend 12.5 liters in the city. At the same time, I still load the trunk to capacity. Well, when empty it takes 6.3 liters on the highway and about 10.4-10.9 liters in the city.
- Vladimir, Kazan. I came across an Optima 2.4 automatic, 2016, fresh. Last generation, fourth. Previously, there was a Camry with similar characteristics, but the Korean turned out to be no worse. Is that the suspension is a bit harsh. In the most extreme conditions, Optima eats up to 15 liters. On average, consumption does not exceed 12 liters per hundred. On the highway at 120-140 km/h, about 9-10 liters are consumed, but this is still a break-in.
- Sergey, Moscow. I took a 2-liter diesel engine for a 2007 MT. Restyle (2nd generation). The car is clearly not for racing, but it’s a shame for an ordinary car enthusiast to complain about the dynamics. I have never pressed the pedal to the floor yet, yet I overcome 100 km/h somehow imperceptibly and quickly. I like driving on the highway. Here the consumption is close to 6.5-7 liters. In the city cycle with leisurely driving, sometimes I fit in 8.5 liters, but this is still more than in the passport.
- Oleg, Voronezh. I once drove an Optima, but it was still the first generation. Engine 2.0 MT 149 hp, restyling. I don’t want to scold the Germans, but the competitor, the Passat CC, is inferior to the Optima in terms of consumption, and there is almost no difference in speed. In the combined cycle I poured about 10 liters per hundred and did not complain. The car is not particularly picky when it comes to fuel.
- Mikhail, Nizhny Novgorod. Kia Optima II (2.0 MT 2010). Still, winter adds costs. Moreover, on this model this figure increases by 2-3 liters in the city. It seemed that the Koreans were one of the most economical, but in reality it was nothing special. The car takes its 10-12 liters. And if you want speed, you will have to spend up to 14 liters.
- Dmitry, Chelyabinsk. I bought a 2.4-liter Kiu Optima with AT for my wife as a gift, built in 2010. The brand new second-generation restyling initially showed itself to be excellent, but the assembly was disappointing (there were a lot of creaks). Well, about those. The data is all pretty decent. (2016-2017) along with a number of other Kia-Hyundai models is assembled at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad. The updated four-door has significantly increased body rigidity, increasing the share of high-strength steels from 20 to 51 percent. Along with this, the car’s engine range was revised, which in the new specification includes three gasoline engines.
The role of the base power plant is assigned to the well-known 2.0 MPI unit with a power of 150 hp. (196 Nm). The Nu series engine with distributed fuel injection is combined with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The first tandem accelerates the car faster (acceleration to 100 km/h – 9.6 seconds) and saves fuel a little better (average consumption – 7.7 liters).
The second in the range of Kia Optima engines is the “four” 2.4 GDI with an aluminum block, direct injection and a variable intake timing system. The output of the unit is 188 hp, torque – 241 Nm. The engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
At the top of the engine line is the 2.0 T-GDI turbo unit of the Theta II series, which is located under the hood of the most powerful modification of the car - the Kia Optima GT. Peak output 245 hp. and a maximum torque of 350 Nm, maintained in the range of 1400-4000 rpm, allow the sports version of the sedan to accelerate to “hundreds” in 7.6 seconds. Similar dynamics are also provided by a 6-speed automatic transmission, which differs from automatic transmissions designed for naturally aspirated 2.0 and 2.4 liter engines. In this case, a box with the factory index A6LF2 is used, which better handles high traction.
The front suspension of the Kia Optima is MacPherson strut mounted on a subframe, the rear is independent on wishbones with a stabilizer bar. The steering is equipped with an electric power steering, mounted on a rack in the GT version (in other modifications it is installed on the steering column).
