How to wash the valve on the injector. Errors when cleaning the throttle valve assembly. Cleaning the throttle valve

When using the car for a long time, its engine may begin to work unstably - the speed decreases greatly, starting causes some difficulties, and when driving at low speed, the car begins to twitch. The cause of this is contamination of the throttle valve. This is what you should pay attention to when such symptoms appear, while many drivers first check spark plugs, injectors and other components of the fuel system. Cleaning the throttle valve will help you cope with such troubles, which can be done without turning to a professional mechanic.

Causes

The damper itself is necessary to regulate the volume of air consumed by the engine. When you press the gas pedal, a cable or electronic drive is activated, and the damper rotates, allowing air to enter the intake manifold. When the gas is released, the opposite effect occurs - the throttle valve rotates, taking its original position, and the volume of the air-fuel mixture supplied to the cylinders is significantly reduced.

Cleaning of this unit is required because crankcase gas emissions may occur during engine operation. In addition, at high engine speeds, “oil mist” can form, which also gradually settles on the damper. It is worth noting that, no matter how effective it is, it cannot retain 100% of moisture and dust coming from the surrounding air. This is why after some time oil stains and even large deposits form on the throttle valve, which disrupt the normal operation of the engine intake system.

Quick cleaning

If you want to temporarily restore normal operation of the damper to wait until a normal repair can be made, you can use the quick cleaning technique. To do this, you don’t need to dismantle anything - just remove the corrugated hose leading from the air filter to the intake tract and assess the condition of the unit. If you see heavy contamination and soot particles inside, you can be sure that the throttle valve is the cause of the unstable operation of the engine.

It is better to use special means

The throttle valve is needed to supply air to the engine intake manifold. The second function is to control the volume of the air mixture. After a certain period of operation, it becomes clogged, which reduces the efficiency of the power unit. To solve this problem you need clean the throttle valve what you can do yourself.

Signs of contamination

The main signs of deposit formation are changes in engine operation. However, this may not always be due to contamination. Sometimes the problem is caused by a sensor malfunction, drive failures, or incorrect settings of the on-board computer parameters. Diagnosis is needed to identify the exact causes. Often, improper throttle operation occurs due to two or more reasons.

Signs of clogging:

  • There is no stable operation of the engine at idle speed, it stalls.
  • The startup time of the power unit increases.
  • At speeds up to 20 km/h, the car jerks when pressing the accelerator pedal.
  • Dips in speed, up to a complete stop of work.

You need to visually inspect the damper. If there are no oil stains or coked build-up, the reason for the incorrect functioning is not due to contamination. You need to do a full diagnosis.

Causes of clogging

The formation of a build-up on the surface of the valve is an inevitable process. Its reason is the removal of crankcase gases, which is necessary for the normal operation of the lubrication system. As a result, some of the oil gets onto the throttle valve. Due to high temperatures, the oil layer hardens and gradually thickens.

An additional factor is that gas combustion products settle on the oil layer. A coked build-up forms. It is impossible to reduce their influence; it is recommended to use good quality oil with a minimum content of third-party impurities. You should also observe the frequency of its replacement.

Incorrect operation of the air filter is also one of the causes of clogging. Some dust and other elements enter the system. This leads to accelerated formation of a layer on the throttle valve. The solution is to monitor the condition of the air filter, change it taking into account the manufacturer’s recommendations and actual operating conditions.

Self-cleaning the throttle valve

The valve can be cleaned without taking off it, but only as a preventive measure. This will not help remove all contaminants, since there will not be full access to the unit. After stopping the engine, you need to wait 1-1.5 hours. Then remove the air duct. The throttle valve is in the closed position. A cleaner is applied to its surface. After it has dried, open the valve manually and process the internal elements.

How often to clean, depends on operating conditions. Dirt removal without dismantling is done every 5-7 thousand km. mileage With dismantling - 30-50 thousand km. But these are conditional indicators, the frequency is determined by the owner of the car after a visual inspection and the appearance of signs of contamination.

Removal

Before removing the throttle valve, check that the engine is cool. Otherwise, there is a risk of burns. Carry out work in a well-lit place. This is necessary for convenient disconnection of external components.

Procedure.

  1. Remove the air duct corrugation.
  2. Disconnecting the idle circuit wires.
  3. Disconnect the throttle position sensor.
  4. Disconnect the hoses. It is advisable to plug their pipes, for example, with spark plugs.
  5. Removing the unit. To do this, you need to unscrew 2 or 4 bolts. If the thread does not feed well, treat it with lubricant.

You need to remember the dismantling order so that after the work there are no installation difficulties. Fold the individual elements.

Cleaning and installation

It is not recommended to use a container to completely immerse the unit. There are aerosol-type products that can treat the outer and inner surface of the throttle valve. Work is performed on a table or any other flat surface with good lighting. The room is ventilated, the temperature should not be lower than +5°C.

Cleaning stages.

  1. Treat the outer and inner surfaces.
  2. Check for dirt and build-up.
  3. Mechanical treatment only with dry rags.
  4. If necessary, repeat cleaning, waiting until the surface has completely dried.

Pay attention to the condition of the crankcase ventilation channel and the location of the needle. This is where dirt accumulates the most. Additionally, clean the idle air regulator. If the condition of these elements is unsatisfactory, there is play in the needle movement, the entire unit needs to be replaced.

Before reinstallation, the condition of the gasket is checked. It should not have ruptures or deformations. It is advisable to replace it with a new one. Installation is carried out in the reverse order, checking the reliability of fastening of the connections.

Facilities

Special products are used to remove dirt and build-up. They are aerosol type, sold in cans. Conventionally divided into specialized and universal. The latter can be used to clean carburetors and other car components.

Review of funds, how to clean it throttle valve at home:

  • Johnsen 4720. Effectively cleans contaminated surfaces. The advantage is a convenient valve, with which you can perform treatment in hard-to-reach places.
  • Hi-Gear. The composition includes anti-corrosion and lubricating components. They do not have a negative effect on the sensitive elements of the unit - oxygen sensor, flexible pipes. However, the manufacturer does not always use a high-quality spray can.
  • ZM 08867. Belongs to the category of universal products. One area of application is carburetor cleaning. The advantage is that it contains catalytic converters.
  • Mag 1 414. Effectively removes deposits; in addition to this function, it can neutralize organic plaque. Feature: large capacity.
  • LIQUI MOLY DrosselKlappen-Reiniger (LM-5111). The manufacturer has developed a composition for cleaning the throttle valve from all types of contaminants.
  • Mannol Carburetor Cleaner. Belongs to the category of universal means.
  • ABRO Carb&Choke Cleaner (CC-220). Allows you to remove all types of plaque and growths on the surface. The disadvantage is the small capacity of the can (220 ml).

The use of compounds not intended for this work can lead to damage to internal elements. Sometimes the above products are replaced with WD-40, acetone or other solvents. The danger lies in the possible negative impact on sensors and other sensitive components of the unit.

Possible mistakes

The first attempts to clean the throttle valve do not always lead to the desired result. In some cases, they can impair the performance of that machine component. The solution is to order a service from a specialized service or study the entire process in detail and choose the right, effective means.

Possible errors when performing cleaning:

  • Processing frequency is not observed. Frequent impacts may disrupt the operation of the damper.
  • Using rough rags or brushes will damage the surface.
  • Removing the molybdenum layer, which is necessary to reduce air flow resistance. The layer is often confused with an oil coating.
  • Throttle valve training is not carried out. This is necessary to set the idle speed.
  • After 30-40 thousand km. mileage cleaning is carried out only with dismantling.

To effectively remove dirt and deposits, you need to properly dismantle the unit, select the optimal composition and carry out work with minimal physical impact on the surface. The result of this will be long-lasting operation of the throttle valve and the entire vehicle.

During the operation of the vehicle, the throttle assembly inevitably becomes clogged and requires timely cleaning. During active use of the vehicle, the throttle assembly is constantly exposed to the influence of crankcase gases, small dust particles and working fluids. As a result, the carburetor begins to function unstably. Therefore, it is necessary to promptly diagnose and service the throttle assembly. According to most manufacturers, flushing the throttle valve should be carried out after a mileage of 50,000 km. In addition, it is necessary to carry out timely preventive maintenance, which involves partial disassembly and cleaning of the unit. Cleaning the throttle valve may be done prematurely when operating the vehicle in difficult climatic conditions. In this case, obvious symptoms will indicate contamination of the throttle assembly.

Signs of contamination of the throttle assembly.

If the car engine has problems transitioning from high speeds to idle, then the probable cause is contamination of the remote control. A striking example of throttle valve contamination is the case when, instead of gradually returning to the required speed, the torque rapidly drops and the engine stalls with characteristic sounds. At the same time, the car engine has great difficulty restoring the required torque. If this malfunction occurs, you must promptly begin cleaning the remote control. Flushing the throttle valve will save some money on vehicle maintenance and restore the productivity of the internal combustion engine.

Another symptom indicating a malfunction of the throttle assembly is difficulty starting the engine system. As a rule, when the throttle is dirty, cold starting of the engine becomes more difficult. If the unit is heavily clogged, the hot start of the internal combustion engine may also be affected. As a rule, when the throttle is dirty, you have to turn the starter for a long time, and you may notice the smell of gasoline from the exhaust system. If you open the throttle slightly by pressing the gas pedal, the car engine starts. In this case, there is a need to diagnose remote control.

Do-it-yourself technologies for cleaning the throttle assembly.

To carry out the work we will need the following materials and tools:

  • Socket wrench 13.
  • Standard screwdriver set.
  • Carburetor cleaning composition.

One of the main safety requirements when performing work is a cold engine!

Stages of work execution.

1. The first step is to remove the plastic engine protection.

2. The next step is to remove the tank plug and loosen the clamps in order to reduce the pressure in the cooling system.

3. Now we dismantle the pipe ventilation conductor and carry out visual diagnostics for traces of oil. If traces of working fluid are found in the air pipe, most likely the narrow channel of the remote control is clogged.

5. Dismantle the tank ventilation hose and remove the remote control cable.

6. Now all that remains is to unscrew the throttle assembly holders and clean the system using a special liquid.

7. After successful cleaning, restore the system in the reverse order.

Cleaning the throttle assembly is a simple procedure that every vehicle owner can handle. High-quality cleaning of the damper will help get rid of problems when starting the vehicle and restore the productivity of the car’s propulsion system.

The injector throttle valve (IZ) is an essential component of the starting system for gasoline power units, which is designed to regulate the volume of air flowing into the engine. The need to clean it does not arise often, but it is worth knowing how to clean the injector throttle valve, because this can happen at any time on a used car.

Symptoms of remote sensing contamination

ATTENTION! A completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption has been found! Don't believe me? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also didn’t believe it until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

Typically, symptoms of damper contamination include the following:

  • the power plant speed drops and freezes, a complete engine stop is possible;
  • while driving, the engine functions unstably and unevenly;
  • in XX mode the speed fluctuates;
  • starting the engine becomes more difficult for no reason.

One of the main signs of a dirty valve is poor traction at low speeds. In addition, the car jerks while moving, especially when accelerating. Why is this happening?

How does the remote control become contaminated?

A lot of all kinds of deposits accumulate on the walls of the damper, which block the passage of air at small opening angles of the remote control. Obviously, this was not initially provided by the manufacturer. Engineers calculated the dynamics of the car based on normal indicators, for pure remote sensing, as they say. For this reason, as soon as the damper becomes dirty, traction begins to fail. After proper cleaning, all processes are improved, including fuel consumption.

Cleaning the engine protection is mandatory after washing the injector nozzles. In addition, the procedure is recommended for carrying out after the simultaneous appearance of 2-3 of the symptoms described above (maybe all together).

It will be useful to know that the main source of contamination of the remote control is the filtration (operation) of the crankcase. On older engines, oil deposits come out of the crankcase. The steam settles and cools, turning into deposits.

Do I need to check the remote control often? Yes, if the car is used, definitely. This must be done every time you service the power unit. If traces of carbon deposits are visible on the valve, as in the photo, it is necessary to urgently begin the procedure for cleaning the throttle valve.

If the car has a remote control and IAC, then the sensor also needs to be thoroughly washed.

What is throttle adaptation or learning

DZ can be washed at home, although this largely depends on the car model. For example, if the car has a cable-operated, mechanical gas pedal (standard), you can safely start cleaning. Not at all, if an electronic throttle is installed, the situation changes. Adaptation may be needed.

The adaptation is reset either from the scanner or forcibly when the accelerator pedal is simply pressed all the way and the accelerator pedal is lowered when the internal combustion engine is standing. Adaptation is nothing more than a decrease in throttle angle (throttle opening angle). Often, after flushing the electronic throttle, the throttle valve opens more than necessary.

There are people who claim that after several tens of kilometers the remote sensing system automatically adapts, but this is not so. There have been cases when, even after 200 km, the car remained at floating speed. They instantly disappeared after forced adaptation.

Here's how training (adaptation) is carried out:

  • the battery current is checked, which should be within 12.9 volts (with the engine standing);
  • the temperature of the antifreeze is checked (should be 70-99°);
  • the gearbox must be thoroughly warmed up and the steering wheel must be in neutral;
  • The car should be placed on a level surface, all consumers should be turned off.

After that:

  • start the engine and count to five;
  • then quickly press the gas pedal all the way and release (repeat 5 times);
  • After that, count to seven, and then press the accelerator pedal all the way and hold it until the Check indicator starts flashing;
  • release the pedal after this, counting to three;
  • start the engine again if it stalls and count to twenty;
  • give gas and check that the speed automatically returns to standard in idle mode.

DIY cleaning

How do you clean the throttle valve on the injector? The easiest way is to use carburetor cleaner. The throttle body opens forcibly, and the liquid from the carburetor washes away all the dirt from the inside. You can also clean it with a piece of soft cloth.

If the DZ is removed, then you can clean it with anything: solvent, brush. The main thing is not to use harsh abrasive compounds or sharp, rough objects.

When using carburetor cleaner in an aerosol can, it is recommended to wear glasses. The liquid is under pressure; when washed, it scatters in all directions and can get into the eyes.

It is not at all necessary to remove the remote control. Cleaning can be done by car, although washing and removal gives a much more effective result. In addition, cleaning without removal is impossible if an XX sensor is installed on the machine and it is connected to the damper.

In practice, washing the protective gear without removing it is quite sufficient. There are also advantages to this procedure: there is no risk of breaking the sealing seal, which is located between the VC (manifold) and the damper, you can clean it on a hot engine, there is no risk of being scalded with hot antifreeze, etc.

If you decide to clean the remote control by removing it, you must remember to bleed the air. To do this, unscrew the cap of the antifreeze tank.

  1. Do not use excessive force when cleaning the ESD, even if you have a soft cloth or rags in your hands. The damper material is very sensitive, because it is coated with molybdenum for smoother passage of air, in addition, the TPS (sensor) can be easily damaged.
  2. Clean the damper only when really necessary.
  3. It is better to use soft cloths for cleaning, but not brushes. Even with soft bristles, they can easily remove molybdenum along with plaque.

During the operation of a car, various problems arise with the engine, but as long as the engine is in good working order, car owners try not to touch the car, for fear of disrupting the stable operation of the power unit.

However, there are some nodes that require periodic preventive maintenance. Cleaning the throttle valve must be done regularly; if this is not done, the internal combustion engine will begin to malfunction after a certain time and operate in violation of the normal operating mode. Why the throttle assembly is cleaned and what it gives will be discussed in this article.

Types of throttle valves of a modern car

The throttle valve (DZ) is an element of the internal combustion engine intake system; it regulates the supply of the air-fuel mixture or air into the intake manifold. Depending on the type of power unit, there are different types of throttle valves - with a mechanical or electronic drive; on a carburetor engine, the damper is an integral part of the carburetor.

The damper itself is usually attached to the axle with two screws; when it opens, the engine speed increases. Maximum speed is reached when the throttle is fully opened, but the throttle valve never closes tightly - if you close the throttle completely, the engine will stall, since the supply of fuel and air to the intake tract will stop.

In engines with distributed injection, the throttle regulates the air supply to create the required proportion of the fuel mixture; in carburetor engines, a dosed mixture is supplied to the valve from the carburetor. In mechanically driven systems, the throttle is turned by pressing the gas pedal, to which a cable is connected. In electronic throttle units, there is no mechanical connection between the axle drive and the damper itself; the rotation of the damper is “commanded” by an electrical signal supplied to the unit.

How often should you clean the throttle body?

There are no clear recommendations on how often to clean the throttle assembly; many car owners turn to a car service center only when any problems arise with the engine. There is an opinion that the throttle should be cleaned of soot and slag after 40-50 thousand kilometers, while others believe that cleaning the parts is necessary after 30-40 thousand kilometers.

The throttle body becomes clogged with black soot due to low quality fuel, and oily deposits can also form on the throttle body. If the valve becomes coked with soot and oily impurities, this means that there are problems with the piston group or the crankcase ventilation is clogged.

If the throttle body is clogged with slag, the motor begins to operate unstably; the main signs of a clogged throttle assembly are:

  • ICE idle speed floats;
  • the engine does not immediately respond to pressing the gas pedal;
  • The car drives jerkily and changes speed on its own.

If the throttle axis is covered with tarry deposits, it begins to jam, and then the accelerator pedal is pressed with force. To accurately determine the cause of the clogged throttle body, it is necessary to remove and disassemble the unit; the degree of throttle contamination is determined by external inspection.

How to clean the throttle body

Many car services clean throttle assemblies; there are car repair shops that specialize in certain brands of cars (Ford, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen, etc.). If desired, the car owner can clean the throttle valve himself - in general, the procedure is not too complicated and does not require much experience or special knowledge.

The cost of cleaning at service stations may vary, it depends on:

  • on the complexity of the work (on some car models it is difficult to get close to the remote control, you have to remove a lot of parts);
  • level of car service (at a large service station, servicing a car is always more expensive);
  • region (in large cities they charge more money for work than in regional centers).

For example, in St. Petersburg, cleaning the throttle at a mid-level car service center will cost from 1,500 rubles; the service costs approximately the same in the capital region. Diagnostics of the throttle control costs approximately 600-800 rubles; car services also carry out throttle adaptation. Adaptation (learning) is performed so that the electronics “remembers” in what position the damper is open and closed. This procedure is carried out in the following cases:

  • when replacing or cleaning the throttle;
  • after the battery is completely discharged;
  • after changing the electronic accelerator pedal.

In order to clean the throttle assembly, parts must be removed; some perform cleaning without removing the throttle, with partial disassembly. But incomplete disassembly in many cases does not solve the problem, since when performing work the DS axis must also be cleaned, and this is almost impossible to do on site.

In order to clean the throttle valve with your own hands, you will need the following:

  • car instrument;
  • a special cleaning agent, most often carburetor cleaner is used;
  • soft rags.

Let's look at how you can clean an electronically controlled ignition sensor on a Nissan car. We carry out the work in the following order:

  • open the hood, just in case, pull off the terminal from the battery;
  • unscrew the clamps of the air filter pipe;
  • disconnect the plugs from the throttle assembly, the outlet hose of the ventilation system;
  • dismantle the air filter receiver assembly with the pipe;
  • Using a 5 mm hexagon, unscrew the 4 fasteners of the throttle valve;
  • remove the throttle as carefully as possible, trying not to damage the gasket;
  • all dirt and soot from the throttle must be cleaned off;
  • take the carburetor cleaner Carbcleaner, put a tube on the bottle, and spray the composition onto the surface of the damper;
  • if there is little dirt, it itself begins to corrode under the influence of the jet;
  • We try to apply the cleaner composition alternately on one and the other side of the device;
  • wait until the Carb Cleaner is absorbed into the soot and the liquid dries;
  • after drying, repeat the procedure, wipe the damper with a rag;
  • Also, don’t forget to wipe the insides of the intake manifold in the place where the manifold connects to the DZ. If there is only a little soot on the metal, it is not necessary to spray it from a can; just moisten a cloth with the cleaner and wipe the surface;
  • Having thoroughly cleaned the soot, we put the part in place and connect the air pipe.

We start the engine, but if high speeds appear after cleaning the throttle valve, throttle adaptation is necessary. We “train” the damper as follows:

You must act strictly according to the stopwatch - if you make a mistake by a few seconds, adaptation may not work. If the internal combustion engine does not stall at the last start, the entire adaptation should take from one and a half to two minutes.

If the speed still does not return to normal after training, you can try not waiting 3 seconds after the warning light comes on - immediately remove your foot from the pedal and start the engine.

The damper does not need training in all cases; if there is little soot in it, adaptation may not be necessary. Car owners should also know that training should be performed with a charged battery in the car.

Just 15-20 years ago there were few compositions for cleaning throttle bodies in stores, and many car enthusiasts cleaned carburetors and injectors with various improvised means. Now there is no need for this - there is a wide range of auto chemicals on sale.

It’s not worth saving on a cleaner - you won’t be able to save a lot of money, and you may not achieve the desired result. Among the most well-known manufacturers of chemicals for throttle valves and carburetors are the following companies:

  • Hi-Gear;
  • Liqui Moly;
  • 3ton;
  • Yamalube;
  • STEP UP;
  • Abro.

Using cleaners, you can not only clean the throttle, but also the PCV ventilation valve (crankcase gases). Hi-Gear (“Synthetic Formula”) does not contain substances that destroy parts of the fuel system, so the product will not cause any harm. High Gear carburetor cleaner is available in cans with a capacity of 354 and 510 g; a large bottle is usually enough for two or three cleanings. The only serious drawback of Hi-Gear products is the rather high price.

STEP UP carburetor cleaner is cheaper, but in quality it is almost in no way inferior to High Gear. The cleaner comes with a regular and improved (synthetic) formula; the product has a very mild odor.
