Lada Granta liftback technical specifications, which we will look at in more detail today, is a modification of the budget sedan Lada Granta sedan. In turn, these cars are built on the Lada Kalina platform, hence the common engines, suspension, transmission, and wheelbase. Of course, all components and assemblies have some features, more on that later.

So, the Lada Granta liftback or VAZ-2191 entered the assembly line in Izhevsk in the spring of 2014. Unlike the sedan, the liftback has original rear doors, its own bumpers, and a 5th door, which, according to reviews from car buyers, makes the car more practical. However, due to the design of the rear body, visibility through the interior rearview mirror is very limited.

If we continue to compare the liftback with the sedan, we can note a discrepancy in size, because the Granta Liftback is slightly shorter in length. According to the passport, the sedan has a larger luggage compartment, but if you fold down the rear seats, the liftback gets a fairly large loading space. Besides, luxury version Granta Liftback received improved sound insulation, a modernized suspension, about which more below. The manual transmission now has a cable drive, as a result, virtually no vibrations are transmitted to the gearshift lever. At the front of the liftback there are ventilated brake discs and a host of other improvements and options.

But let's start with technical characteristics of Lada Granta liftback engines. There are three power units in total, they all have a total working volume of 1.6 liters and consume AI-95 gasoline as fuel. 4-cylinder in-line engines have power from 87 hp. up to 106 horses.

Base motor VAZ-11186 has 8 valves with a power of 87 hp. with a maximum torque of 140 Nm. This engine is combined only with a 5-speed manual transmission and provides fairly good dynamics with moderate fuel consumption. Acceleration to the first hundred takes only 12.5 seconds, which is quite good for a budget car. Fuel consumption in mixed mode is about 7 liters. By the way, this is a very real fuel consumption.

The technical characteristics of the most powerful Grant Liftback engine of 106 horsepower are much better. Acceleration to hundreds takes exactly 11 seconds, and the average consumption is 6.7 liters. Excellent performance is ensured by the presence of 16 valves, 4 per cylinder. In the factory nomenclature, the motor is listed under the index VAZ-21127. Torque of 148 Nm and 106 horses are provided by electronically controlled distributed fuel injection. The engine meets Euro-4 environmental standards. According to the manufacturer, the maximum speed with this unit is only 177 km/h, but according to reviews from the owners themselves, this is not the limit. This engine is only compatible with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Engine Lada Granta Liftback, which is installed together with an automatic transmission, is also 16-valve, but with a power of 98 hp (145 Nm). The unit is called as VAZ-21126. A 4-speed automatic transmission means higher fuel consumption and less brisk acceleration. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 13.7 seconds, and average fuel consumption is 7.6 liters. According to the manufacturer, the engine pistons are coated with graphite, which ensures safe starting in cold weather.

It is worth noting that new liftback body much stiffer than a sedan body, in addition, the “luxury” version now has an upgraded suspension. The MacPherson-type front suspension has springs of a different stiffness. The strut itself is now gas-filled with changed characteristics, the trailing arm of the suspension has become much stiffer. And the anti-roll bar has a larger diameter of 24 mm instead of 22 mm. The same modernization was carried out on the rear suspension, the manufacturer increased the spring stiffness, the diameter of the stabilizer, and now they are installing new shock absorbers there.

In addition, on the “luxury” version of the liftback, the electric power steering mechanism received a reduced number of gear revolutions, to 3.10 (in the basic configuration this figure is 4.02). As a result, the car has become more stable on the road and handles more clearly, reacting more sharply to the steering wheel.


The production of Grant in a liftback body was based on the original version of this model, so their dimensions are almost identical. But, of course, there are still certain differences. Let's look at them.

  1. Body length reduced by 14 mm.
  2. The interior ceiling in the rear seat area has become slightly smaller, by about 8 cm.

As you can see, the parameters of the liftback and the sedan are almost identical. However, does this apply to the trunk? Let's consider the indicators in liters and in physical terms.

What are the dimensions of the trunk

The trunk of the Lada Granta is quite large and roomy. Before finding out its volume, let's first look at its dimensions. They look like this:

  • length from the door to the back of the rear seat – 1040 mm;
  • height from floor to ceiling (without rug) – 610 mm;
  • opening width – 1350 mm;
  • Width between lugs – 920 mm.


The trunk volume of the Lada Granta liftback is 480 liters. According to this indicator, the car is somewhat inferior to some competitors. For example, another popular car in Russia, Renault Logan, boasts great performance. Here the trunk volume is about 510 liters. However, this figure is difficult to consider reliable, since the manufacturer provides only a theoretical calculation. For the Lada Granta, the values ​​are reliably established.

In addition, Renault Logan costs significantly more, and in order to save money, some car enthusiasts are willing to sacrifice a relatively small difference in performance. Plus, if you're short on space, you can expand it very easily. This can be done simply by removing the rear seat of the car. In this case, the trunk volume will immediately increase to 960 liters, and this is a very serious value.

The Lada Granta was created as a people's car, accessible to all segments of the population, and soon became a bestseller. Low price is the main advantage of this car. One of the main features of the Grant is its large and roomy trunk, which is not inferior in practicality to its foreign analogues among budget foreign cars.

Features of the design of the Lada Granta trunk

The Lada Granta sedan has a trunk with a total volume of 480 liters, while its closest competitor Renault Logan has a capacity of 510 liters. French engineers provide this data based on theoretical figures, based on how many liters of liquid will fit in the trunk. Their Russian colleagues provide more realistic figures on volume.

Granta is purchased both for work and as a family car. The decisive factor when choosing is not only technical characteristics, but also the trunk, which is important for Russian car enthusiasts. A domestic car is often used to transport all kinds of things, and it must be suitable for transporting not only small, but also large cargo. The user manual contains no information about the dimensions of the Lada Grant's trunk other than the volume, but car owners took their own measurements:

  • length from the lid to the rear row of seats – 103 cm;
  • length from the lid with the rear seat folded – 164 cm;
  • height to ceiling – 48 cm;
  • opening width – 132 cm;
  • the distance between the torsion lugs is 94 cm.

The advantage of 480 liters is quite impressive. Grant's closest competitor in terms of cost, the Lada Kalina, has a luggage compartment volume of only 350 liters.

To expand the space, you can fold down or remove the rear sofa altogether. This will increase the volume to 720 liters.

Numbers won’t tell you anything without clarity, so you can use a standard bag of potatoes as a unit of measurement:

  • 480 liters allows you to fit 4 bags of potatoes;
  • 720 liters – 6 bags.

Based on reviews from car owners, up to 400 kg of payload can fit in the trunk. Another indicator of the dimensions of the luggage compartment is the ability to transport all 4 wheels.

Trunk Features

In addition to the traditional four-door full-size body, the Lada Granta sedan is also available in a liftback modification. The peculiarity lies in the reduced body length and increased ground clearance. Unlike a traditional hatchback, the trunk lid is combined with a large rear window, but the main advantage is not this, but the volume of the luggage compartment.

The luggage compartment volume in the liftback is 440 liters in normal condition. If you fold the rear row of seats, the figure increases to 770 liters. According to this indicator, even the most popular Volkswagen Golf hatchback remains far behind. Due to the decision to make a single base for both the sedan and the liftback, the engineers were unable to catch up with the Golf in volume with the seats folded down. For the German hatchback this figure is 1200 liters.

As with the sedan, the manufacturer does not provide information on the dimensions of the luggage compartment other than the volume in liters. As it turned out in practice, the large trunk volume is not quite as large as shown in advertising videos. The rear row of seats can only be folded if the front seats are moved as far forward as possible. The rear seat head restraints will have to be removed.

If necessary, you can remove the rear shelf, for example, when transporting large cargo. This will not increase the volume, but nothing will interfere with the load. There are niches on the right and left for transporting various things, for example, travel bags or necessary tools. Above these recesses there are hooks for hanging packages - now they will not get in the way in the back seat. There is a light in the trunk, but it only works when the headlights are on low beam. This is convenient in the dark and in cloudy weather; in other cases, improving the lighting will help.

Under the mat there is a niche for transporting a full-size spare wheel with a set of tools. The size of the recess allows you to transport a larger diameter wheel, for example, R15 or R16, in place of the spare wheel. Additionally, get a rubber mat, since the standard coating will quickly become unusable during the operation of the car.

Advantages and disadvantages of the trunk

For music lovers, the news about the difficulty of installing a subwoofer in the trunk will be unpleasant. It eats up a lot of useful space, and it will no longer be possible to transport bulky cargo. In addition, the subwoofer can simply be damaged. To lock the fifth door, you must press the button on the key. It does not open automatically, which means you have to lift the dirty lid with your hands.

The trunk handle is uncomfortable and looks more like a recess. When closing, the door does not make the sound of the lock clicking - due to inexperience, you will have to double-check whether the trunk is closed or not. The lid combined with glass is noticeably heavier than the usual fifth door of a hatchback, so you will have to make an effort to lift it.

Sometimes there is a malfunction of the lock - if the driver presses the open button from the passenger compartment, the lid then does not close. You have to press the button several times. All these shortcomings are minor, and given the price of the car, they can be neglected. But the opening turned out to be wide and cannot but please the owners. Engineers had to fit a large luggage compartment into a small wheelbase. They coped with this, although there were some minor flaws.

The main disadvantage of the Granta trunk in a sedan body is the opening mechanism. Spring torsion bars in the closed position of the lid interfere with the transportation of goods; when loading a large load, the lid will not be able to close. The second drawback is the imperfection of the lock, which often jams. There is no provision for automatic lifting of the lid when opening, as in the hatchback body. The lid is not sheathed with anything, it is bare metal with paint with all the attendant problems of lack of sound insulation.

Do-it-yourself Grants trunk door trim

You can turn to specialists or buy material, but doing the work yourself will help save money. Sheathing is carried out using two methods:

Method 1

To work, you will need foamed PVC or plastic with a thickness of at least 3 mm, dark carpet, clips, a screwdriver, glue and a hair dryer. From the selected material, cut a piece corresponding to the size of the lid. It is recommended to make a rough version from cardboard, and then transfer the sketch to the selected material. After this, the carpet is glued onto the PVC (or plastic) using glue.

Next, the material is heated with a hairdryer to increase plasticity. On the metal stiffening ribs of the cover, future holes for the clips are marked with a marker, and an anti-corrosion coating is applied. After drilling and treating the holes with anti-corrosion compound, insert the clips. At the final stage, you can install the casing and secure it with plastic pistons.

Method 2

In this case, a similar set of tools will be required, only the material used will be splin or foamed foil penofol 8 mm thick. This method will save time. The revision process is simple and straightforward.

First you need to degrease the surface of the lid, then cut out a template from cardboard and transfer the design to the covering material. The cut penofol should be applied to the metal and the locations for the holes for the clips should be marked. After this, drill holes and treat with an anti-corrosion compound. All that remains is to glue the casing to the lid and secure the inside with clips.

The Granta trunk lid with trim looks attractive and increases sound and vibration insulation. For greater effect, you can make two layers, the first of which will be vibration-absorbing material.

Installing a trunk lock

Today Granta is available in three trim levels: “Standard”, “Norma” and “Lux”. Unlike the latter two, the standard version is not equipped with an electric trunk and hood lock. There are no buttons in the cabin, but the manufacturer has prepared everything necessary for installing the electric drive and has equipped the key fob with a button to open the trunk. By pressing this button and holding it for more than two seconds, you can hear the lock motor relay clicking. The only thing missing is the mechanism itself, which can be purchased at any auto store. The installation process is not complicated and can be done independently. The algorithm of actions is as follows:

  • Remove the inner lining of the trunk by disconnecting the 7 pistons and unscrewing the bolts securing the handle.
  • After this you can see the lock mechanism. To understand the principle of its operation in different positions, you should insert a key into the hole and turn it in different directions. In the closed position, the pusher should work idle; in the open position, press on the rod, which pulls back the lock tongue, opening the trunk).
  • Having understood the positions of the lock, it is not difficult to guess that it is enough to connect the actuator rod to the pusher.
  • Remove the washer and pusher. You will need a small thin metal plate into which the pusher and actuator rod will be installed. You need to make two holes in the plate. One is for the pusher protrusion (located in the center), the second is for the activator rod (on the edge in the lower left part). You will need to select a metal washer for the protrusion of the pusher.
  • Now you can assemble the mechanism; a plate is put on the pusher using the central hole. A washer and a locking ring are used for fixation. The actuator is fixed in the place provided by the manufacturer. Using rods, the plate is connected to the activator through the hole.

At the final stage, it remains to check the functionality of the mechanism and, if necessary, adjust the “closed” and “open” positions.

Modification of the lifting mechanism of the trunk lid of the Lada Granta

On the Granta sedan, torsion bars are responsible for lifting the trunk lid. Many people are not happy with them because they interfere with the transportation of goods. To get rid of this problem, you can install gas stops. To work, you will need a set of these spare parts, a bracket and several hours of free time.

To install the stops, you need brackets that you need to make yourself. Stainless steel 3 mm thick is suitable for this. You need to cut corners of the appropriate size from it. The next step is to remove the torsion bars and arches with springs.

Brackets with stops are secured with a rod towards the street - this ensures smooth movement of the shock absorber without beating. The gas stops are secured to the other side in the same way. Shock absorbers do not interfere with loading and, in the closed position, do not interfere with the transportation of goods.

For the design, you can borrow shock absorbers from the Niva’s rear door. But the force parameter should be taken into account. For example, when installing stops from a VAZ 2109, opening the lid will be smooth, but when closing it will have to apply significant force.

When you press the button on the key fob or in the passenger compartment, the trunk lock opens the lid, but it does not lift, which is not entirely convenient. This omission from the manufacturer can be corrected in just a few minutes. To do this, you will need to purchase two clutch fork springs from a “penny” VAZ 2101. They need to be hooked onto the technological holes in the trunk, and the modification is completed. If before this the cover was modernized and lined with sound insulation, then its weight has become greater, which means that stiffer springs will be needed. For example, from the rear brake pads of a VAZ 2107 and other “classics”. If necessary, the springs can be removed in a minute.

Owners of a liftback know about the problem of all hatchbacks and station wagons - in dirty weather the rear trunk door gets pretty dirty. Opening the door with its automatic raising will be very relevant for such cases.

For modification, you will need to buy two rigid springs, for example, from valves. The upgrade process is as follows:

  • the upper mountings of the rear door shock absorber must be removed;
  • insert a spring of suitable size onto the rod with two washers on both sides to prevent damage to the paintwork;
  • repeat the procedure on the other side.

Since the springs are quite stiff. The force of their decompression should be enough to throw the trunk lid to a height where it will be caught by the gas stops and raised to the end. To close the trunk, you will have to apply a little force due to the installed springs.

AVTOVAZ is preparing to launch a long-awaited new product – a five-door version of its bestseller.

According to AvtoSreda’s own information, the length of the LADA Granta hatchback will be 4247 mm, width – 1700 mm, height – 1500 mm. Thus, the five-door will be 13 millimeters shorter than the sedan. The width and height of both modifications of the model are the same.

The minimum volume of the hatchback luggage compartment is 440 l, the maximum is 760 l. According to the manufacturer, the trunk volume of the Grant sedan is 520 liters.

Like other Ladas, the Granta hatchback will be available in three versions: “standard”, “norm” and “luxury”. The last two trim levels have a couple more versions. It is likely that the number of equipment options for the five-door Granta will increase in the future.

As AutoSreda learned, buyers will be offered a hatchback with three gasoline engines.

87 hp engine equipped with the cheapest “standard” equipment and one of the “norm” versions; 98-horsepower engine with automatic transmission - only for the top-end luxury version; unit with a power of 106 hp – for “norm” and “luxury”.

The maximum speed of the LADA Granta hatchback is 166-177 km/h, depending on the version.

The basic package of the five-door Granta will include: tilt-adjustable steering column, central locking, driver airbag and audio equipment. The back of the rear sofa is indivisible, but, unlike the “standard” LADA Granta sedan, even the cheapest hatchback has bumpers already painted in body color.

Both “standards”, according to “AutoSreda”, are supplemented by ABS + BAS, a separate rear seat, a front suspension with increased caster, electric power steering, an instrument cluster with on-board computer functions, an outside temperature display, front electric windows, an electric tailgate lock with control from the salon.

The difference between the two “normal” configurations is that one has only audio preparation, the other has an audio system with USB, SD card, Bluetooth and Handsfree.

In the “luxury” hatchback LADA Granta, to the main options of the “normal” version, according to AvtoSreda, the following have been added: modernized suspension and additional sound insulation, rear electric windows, passenger airbag, central locking with remote control, electric tailgate lock with remote control and control from interior, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, electrically heated and side turn indicators, fog lights, climate system, multimedia system with a 7-inch touch screen, USB, SD card, Bluetooth and Handsfree.

One of the luxury versions also has a navigation system, the other has an exchange rate stability system (ESC), parking sensors, rain and light sensors.

Both luxury models have 15-inch wheels, the rest of the trim levels have 14-inch wheels.

Prices, the start date of mass production and the date of appearance of the LADA Granta hatchback in showrooms have not yet been officially announced. As previously reported, IzhAvto will produce a five-door modification of the most popular model in Russia. Perhaps the Izhevsk plant will begin production of the hatchback this spring.

The parameters of the sedan are very similar to the liftback. Accordingly, there is plenty of space. Now let's figure out how much a car can hold.

Trunk volume and actual roominess


The trunk volume of the Lada Granta sedan is 480 liters. These are quite impressive figures in comparison with many other cars. For example, another AvtoVAZ product - Lada Kalina - boasts only 350 liters. As you can see, the advantage is quite impressive. If we compare with foreign cars, then as a standard we can take the Renault Logan car, which is also very popular in Russia. In this case, the figures are 510 liters. The difference in this case is not so great. But the cost of the “French” is much higher than that of a domestically produced car. Is it worth paying extra for a relatively small difference?

If this space is not enough for you, then you can increase the volume by simply removing the rear seat. In this case, the volume will be 720 liters. However, numbers remain numbers and they simply won’t mean anything to many people. Therefore, it is much more effective to consider the dimensions of the car in actual size. In this case, we can consider a universal value: a bag of potatoes. An ordinary, standard bag weighing about 35 kg. Under different conditions, the Grant will fit:

  • with a volume of 480 l - 4 bags of potatoes;
  • with a volume of 720 l - 6 bags of potatoes.


In addition to bags of potatoes, you can transport other things in Grant. The capacity of the trunk allows you to transport a wide variety of cargo. It has been experimentally proven that free space can be filled with things with a total mass of approximately 400 kg.
