Homemade bicycle with a motor. Making a bicycle with a motor with your own hands Installing a motor on a bicycle

Engine, today it has become much easier to do this. At the moment, there are already ready-made solutions for such modifications; for example, you can buy a ready-made kit and all you have to do is install it on your bike. That’s it, after this the “great” will turn into a small moped, capable of driving up to 50 km/h, or even more.

Such transport is beneficial for those who often go to the country, to fishing, to the village, to the garage, if it is far away. On such a bicycle moped, fuel consumption will be minimal; there is probably no other vehicle that would consume even less fuel. In addition, even if you run out of gas, you can get to your destination in the classic way, using pedals.

Another advantage of this type of equipment is that it does not require a driver’s license, because in fact it is still a bicycle, since you can only turn on the engine outside the city.

Specifically, this article will discuss how you can install a chainsaw engine on a bicycle. Many people have unwanted chainsaw motors or even old chainsaws lying around in their garage. A motor from a lawn mower is also perfect for this purpose.

Materials and tools for homemade:

1. First of all, you will need an engine. The more powerful it is, the faster the bike will go. On average, today there are chainsaws with a power of 1.5-2 horsepower, this power is quite enough to ride a bicycle moped at a speed of about 30-40 km/h.
2. Capacity for creating a gas tank. It is best, of course, that it be made of metal, it will be safer. But you can also use plastic containers.
4. Bicycle cable and throttle handle to control the throttle.
5. Wires and switch for connecting the engine ignition.
6. Bolts, nuts, elements to create a bracket with which the engine will be attached to the frame.
7. Pulleys, belts, chains and other elements thanks to which the bicycle wheel will be connected to the engine.

The process of equipping a bicycle with a gasoline engine:

Step one. Deciding on the type of motion transmission
Perhaps the most difficult thing in this homemade product is to transfer movement from the motor to the wheel. Here it is important to correctly calculate the gear ratio. If the gear ratio is small, the motor simply may not be able to handle such a load and the bike will not move. If the gear ratio is too large, the bike will ride very slowly, and the engine, operating at high speeds, will overheat.

You can calculate the gear ratio using the example of one of the authors who managed to assemble a similar technique. With an engine power of 1.78 horsepower and a speed of 12,500 rpm, it used a gear ratio of 1:26. The chainsaw used was a Homelite CSP3314 model.

The easiest way to transfer movement from the pulley to the wheel is directly from the motor, that is, according to the same principle as a dyno works. If you approach the process more professionally, then the rear wheel is equipped with an additional sprocket or pulley, and then connected to the engine using a belt or chain. Of course, it is best to use a belt drive, since the chain can fly off with such homemade products, and in general it is unsafe.

Step two. Clutch
Clutch is also a very important element in this type of transport. There are two options here on how to do it. The chainsaw already has a centrifugal clutch, that is, it is a clutch that automatically engages at certain speeds. So the wheel can simply be connected to this clutch, this is the simplest option.

Some other DIYers do not use the saw clutch, but connect it to a bicycle ratchet. This system works very simply: after accelerating and releasing the gas, the bike rolls by inertia, while the ratchet is not interconnected with the wheel. That is, having “turned the lawn” once, you can then roll in a straight line at idle for a very long time.

Step three. Installing a gas tank and connecting the control system

The gas tank can be installed directly next to the engine, but for safety it is best to place it on the frame. But in this case, you will need a hose that needs to be pulled along the frame to the engine.

As for the ignition, everything is simple here, you need to stretch the ignition wire from the engine, and make a switch on the handle so that the engine can be turned off if necessary.

Also, to control the engine, you need to make a throttle handle; it can be borrowed from mountain bikes (buy ready-made). You need to remove the lock from the handle so that it moves smoothly, and then connect the cable to the carburetor throttle valve.

Using a bicycle for transport has a number of obvious advantages. It is inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and allows you to maintain good physical shape. With him, any trip turns into a pleasant walk. The daily route from home to work and back brings only pleasure, because the bike allows you to avoid traffic jams during rush hours and eliminates the need to storm crowded subway cars or buses.

But if your office is located at the other end of the city, the terrain of which consists of continuous ups and downs, then an easy walk turns into hard work, and every meter you walk reminds you of the torment of the first Christians. When you finally get to work, you feel tired and exhausted. Your body requires rest, but there is still a whole day of work ahead. The prospect of having to travel all the way in the opposite direction in the evening also does not help to lift your spirits. If you also don’t have the opportunity to take a shower, then the persistent smell of sweat will accompany you all day.

What to do if you don’t want to part with your bike, but looking for a job closer to home is also somehow out of your hands? In this case, you can purchase a bicycle with a motor or install a motor on an existing one. The industrially manufactured version does not require modifications, but is quite expensive and often has a not very attractive design. To reduce costs, manufacturers use cheap components and Hi-Ten frames in these bicycles. As a result, such a bike weighs more than 20 kg, and if the engine fails for any reason, it will be very difficult to move on it using pedals.

Apollo e-bikes

A homemade bicycle with a motor does not have these disadvantages. In the past, such devices were quite clunky and were used mainly by teenagers, but now the market offers a wide range of solutions with which you can turn an ordinary bike into a high-tech vehicle with your own hands. Such a modification will not require any serious technical knowledge, so you should opt for this option.

Bicycle engines

Before starting work, you should decide on the type of power unit you are going to use. When choosing, you should be guided by criteria such as weight and the preferred type of fuel used. There are only two main types, so you don’t have to rack your brains too much:

  • Internal combustion engine (ICE). For a long time, a gasoline engine remained the only possible solution available for installation on a bicycle. Most often these were converted chainsaws and lawn mowers. Nowadays, finding a suitable small-sized engine is not difficult.
  • Electric motor. More recently, he was a clear outsider, but the advent of compact high-capacity batteries allowed him to push the gasoline engine into the background.

Gas engine

The use of an internal combustion engine makes it easy to develop significant speeds, and this circumstance often becomes a decisive factor when choosing a power plant. However, do not forget that a bicycle remains the same bicycle, and its components are not designed for such high loads. It is necessary to constantly monitor its technical condition, otherwise it may simply fall apart at the most inopportune moment.

Typically, a gasoline engine is mounted on the trunk or attached to the frame. In both cases, transmission of torque from the engine to the wheel will require some type of transmission, which increases the complexity and weight of the structure. Don’t forget about the weight of the engine itself, as well as the fuel supply that you will have to carry with you. If the motor fails, riding such a bicycle with just pedals will be a very difficult task.

Bicycle with a chainsaw motor

The use of gasoline as fuel kills the very idea of an inexpensive and environmentally friendly form of transport. During a walk, instead of birdsong, you will only hear the sound of a motor, and if you decide to, your apartment will always smell like a gas station.

Another aspect that requires close attention relates not to the technical, but to the legal side of the issue. In many countries, the use of bicycles equipped with internal combustion engines requires registration and a license of the appropriate category.

The combination of all these circumstances allows us to safely exclude the gasoline engine from consideration. Indeed, why once again “reinvent the wheel” (or motorcycle) if the market is already full of affordable scooters and mopeds. Therefore, it is worth leaving the internal combustion engine aside and moving on to considering the second option, which is now a priority.

Electric bycicle

Although the idea of making a bicycle with an electric drive appeared at the end of the 19th century, the level of development of electrical engineering did not allow it to be fully used in practice. At the beginning of the 90s of the last century there was a surge of interest in such devices. Since then, the bike has taken a strong position among urban modes of transport, and its popularity is only growing every year.

Electric bicycle in Estonia

To convert a bicycle, you will need an electric motor, a battery, a controller, and control devices. All this can be easily purchased in a store or online. However, before installation, you should decide which type of drive is best installed on the bike.

The first step is to exclude an engine with a friction transmission from consideration, since its low reliability and insufficient efficiency do not allow achieving any acceptable results when using it. That leaves two options: outboard and hub motor, and both have their pros and cons.

Outboard motor

Outboard bicycle engines have a number of advantages. They are supplied as a ready-made kit, the installation of which does not cause any difficulties; The motors are easily mounted on the frame or directly on the carriage, and are small in size and weight. There are also options for an electric motor integrated into the carriage assembly. Many of them allow you to change gears using your existing bike drivetrain. The design of some engines includes an energy recovery option, which significantly saves battery power. The power of such electric motors ranges from 250 to 2 thousand W, which makes it possible to develop a fairly decent speed.

Serial outboard motor

But this solution, in addition to numerous advantages, has one huge drawback - a high price, comparable in value to the cost of a factory electric bicycle. If we add here the costs of purchasing a battery, controller and other spare parts, then the benefits of this option become completely unobvious.

Cheap transport turns into very expensive, and not everyone will agree to incur such costs.

Bicycle engine from BOFEILI

An alternative to the factory kit is to assemble the power unit from available spare parts. Often, motors from various household appliances or power tools are used for these purposes. Installing such a motor with your own hands can be a non-trivial task, especially for people who do not have mechanical skills. Some of the problems have already been mentioned when considering the gasoline engine. Firstly, these are increased loads on bicycle components caused by increased speed. Secondly, the need to use a belt or chain drive, which complicates the design and increases weight.

Homemade transmission

It is difficult to advise anything specific to those who decide to take on such a project on their own, since each case is individual and depends on many factors. Only a few general considerations can be given.

  • First you need to choose an engine that is suitable in terms of power and dimensions. If it should only help pedal and reduce physical activity, then a small motor with a power of 200–250 W will do. If you strive for high speeds, then you will have to look for a model with 350 W or higher.
  • Then you need to carefully consider mounting the engine, choose a suitable place for it, correctly calculate the transmission parameters, the length of the chain or belt. Use already known, well-proven solutions. This will save you from serious mistakes and save time and money.
  • Don't get too carried away and try to make a revolution in technology. For some people, the process of technical creativity itself is important. They spend a lot of time constantly redoing and improving things. We can say with almost one hundred percent certainty that their unit, assembled from the most incredible components, will never be completed. Such “Frankensteins” are doomed to spend their entire life in the garage, and if they leave it for testing, they don’t go far and only for a short time, immediately break down and return to the workshop for modification and improvement.
  • Pay special attention to the strength of the structure. Your health depends on it, especially if you are going to install a powerful engine.

Bicycle wheel motor

The most popular and affordable type of electric motor for a bicycle is a wheel motor. This device does not have many of the disadvantages inherent in outboard motors. It is a DC electric motor mounted directly into the hub. Its power varies widely, making it easy to choose the version that suits your needs. It is much cheaper and practically does not change the appearance of the bike. Installing a motor wheel does not take much time, and anyone who knows how to read the instructions can easily handle it, and for the rest, there are a large number of drawings and videos illustrating the process in detail.

Kit with uncoated motor wheel

As a rule, the manufacturer offers two types of delivery: a bare motor and a finished wheel with spokes and a double rim. The first option allows you to insert the engine into an existing wheel, and the second is completely ready for use, all that is missing is a tire with a tube. Typically, the kit also includes a controller, gas and brake handles, connecting wires, fasteners and a charger. The battery most often has to be purchased separately.

Bicycle with a motor wheel mounted in front

When choosing a motor wheel, you should pay attention to the correspondence of the dimensions of its hub to the distance between the fork legs or frame stays. If its length is greater, then they will have to be moved apart, which is extremely undesirable.

Transforming a simple bicycle into an electric one usually takes only half an hour. The wheel motor is easy to install both front and rear. You can use two engines at once and end up with an all-wheel drive bike. Next, the controller is connected, the battery is attached to the frame or seat tube, and the gas and brake handles are placed on the steering wheel. All these components are then connected using wires. Each of them has an individual connector, so it’s impossible to make a mistake. That's all, you can get on your bike and hit the road.

In one article it is difficult to answer all the questions that may arise during the process of installing an engine on your favorite bike. Each of the listed modification options has its own advantages and disadvantages. We can only note that in terms of parameters such as price and ease of installation, the indisputable leader is the wheel motor. Apply a little diligence and ingenuity, and you will certainly succeed. In the end, you are not building a time machine, but just a bicycle with a motor.

Nowadays, among people who prefer a bicycle as a means of transportation, it is becoming popular to install electric motors. After all, they make driving much easier. An electric motor for a bicycle can be assembled and installed with your own hands.

Description

This bicycle accessory comes in several types:

  • motor-wheel;
  • outboard engine;
  • friction gear engine.

Just like cars, motorized bicycles can be:

  • front-wheel drive;
  • rear-wheel drive;
  • all-wheel drive.

Motor-wheel

This engine has many advantages, which led to its popularity among cycling enthusiasts:

  1. Easy to mount and remove the motor. Not requiring special skills.
  2. Possibility of installation on a regular bicycle.
  3. It is possible to create both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models.
  4. The device is practically invisible and looks like an ordinary hub.

The power of such an engine can be from 150 to 2000 W. This indicator determines which motor should be installed. With voltage from 24 to 48 V. So, depending on the selected indicators, it is necessary to select a suitable battery.

Reference! With such an engine, the bike can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h. In this case, the charge will last for 50–60 km on average. As you go uphill, the performance decreases.

Flaws:

  • increase in bike weight;
  • You may need to install a reinforced fork;
  • drive power restrictions.

Outboard engine

This type of engine is an independent part, attached to the bottom of the bicycle frame. A prerequisite for installation is the need to install a protective cover for the motor.

The engine transmits power through a chain drive to the rear sprocket of the bicycle. The engine is powered by a battery.

  1. The presence of a stepped gear selector.
  2. More efficient and economical.
  3. Increased speed performance. A bicycle with such an electric motor can reach speeds of up to 120 km/h.
  4. Can be installed on almost any bike.
  1. Installation may be difficult.
  2. Noisy engine operation.
  3. The bicycle frame must be strong to support the bulky structure.
  4. Increase in bike weight after installing such a motor.

Friction gear engine

This type of engine is very easy to install; you don’t even need to disassemble the bike. Operating principle: torque from the electric motor goes directly to the wheel. But this type has more disadvantages than advantages.

  1. Easy to install.
  1. Poor performance.
  2. Rapid wear of wheels.
  3. Engine performance deteriorates in rain.

Self-production

Making an electric motor yourself is very difficult. In this case, two options are possible:

  1. Remove the engine from the electrical appliance (chainsaw, washing machine, lawn mower, etc.).
  2. Buy a kit for an electric motor.

Motor from electrical appliance

Initially, for this you need to find where to get the motor. And it's not that easy. Basically, electrical appliances are designed for a voltage of 220 V. This means that in order to operate such a mechanism, a high-power battery will be required. And this, in turn, will make the bike very heavy.

The exact opposite situation may also arise. For example, you took the motor from a lawn mower. It may be too weak to even move your bike.

This means that you can make an electric motor yourself, but this is a rather time-consuming process. There are many factors to consider when selecting equipment.

Electric motor kit

If you don’t want to purchase a ready-made kit to improve your vehicle, you can buy individual parts and create an electric motor yourself. To do this you need:

  • controller;
  • engine;
  • batteries and charger for them.

The following batteries can be used for an electric motor:

  1. Nickel metal hydride.
  2. Lithium-ion.

Batteries can be attached:

  1. In a specially designated container.
  2. On the frame and in its compartments.

You can also purchase upgrade parts. For example, a battery charge indicator, which will also notify you about the speed of movement and the force of pressing the gas pedal.

How to install?

If you decide to purchase a ready-made electric motor and install it yourself. It is better to buy a wheel motor, as it has good performance and there will be no difficulties during installation. This engine can be installed on both the front and rear wheels. The most common option is the second one and we will consider it.

Important! When purchasing a kit, the main thing is to accurately select the size of the wheel motor for the bicycle fork.

If everything is selected correctly, you can begin installation:

  1. First, remove the rear wheel.
  2. Install the wheel motor with the drive to the left and the sprockets to the right.
  3. Mount the entire circuit, but do not fix it too much.
  4. Connect the wire according to the diagram.
  5. Install the chain and center the motor.
  6. If there is no noticeable beating in the motor wheel, fix it.
  7. Next, securely fix all the parts and insulate all the wires.
  8. Check the operation of the improved unit and you're done.
Reference! If you have any problems when installing the electric motor, it is better to contact support. This will save you from breaking the entire system.

If replacing a wheel was not part of your plans, then it is better to give your preference to an outboard engine. Installation is somewhat more complicated than in the previous version.

Briefly, installing an outboard engine goes like this:

  1. You need to remove the rear wheel.
  2. Connect the chain and the motor together.
  3. Install: motor block; battery; control unit and adjustment knobs.
  4. Connect all the elements of the set together.
  5. After this, check the correctness and reliability of the installed elements, as well as the operation of the unit. With low engine power, pedal stimulation may be required.

An electric motor for a bicycle can greatly facilitate your movement, especially if this is your main mode of transport. During operation, this device will not bring much trouble. Your main task will be to monitor the battery charge level and prevent excessive moisture from entering the motor.

From this step-by-step instructions you will learn how to install a gasoline engine on a regular bicycle, that is, make a motorcycle out of a bicycle that can cover more than a hundred kilometers on one liter of gasoline.

Step 1: What you need to create a homemade gasoline-powered bicycle.

To make a homemade motorcycle from a bicycle we will need:

  • screwdriver;
  • two clamps;
  • Grubee 66cc engine;
  • petrol;
  • hammer;
  • throttle;
  • emergency switch;
  • muffler;
  • star;
  • chain;
  • chain squeezing;
  • fuel line;
  • oil;
  • warm workplace.

Step 2: Installing the gasoline engine on the bike.

Mount the motor above the carriage using clamps.

The motor is mounted above the carriage simultaneously on two frame pipes. If the motor mounts do not reach the frame pipes, then brackets will be required. To achieve the ideal engine position, first mount it as low as possible on the seat tube and then attach it to the down tube.

Step 3: Install the second chain and sprocket.

The rear sprocket has a center hole diameter of 35.9 mm and is mounted perpendicular to the axle on the left side. Spin the rear wheel and check if it is loose - this could cause the chain to fly off.

The rear sprocket on the hub should have its convex side facing the wheel.

Cut a rubber spacer to protect the area around the spokes and axle. Attach it with nine bolts to the steel locking plate that usually comes with the sprocket.

On some bicycles without a coaster brake, it may be necessary to install an insulator on both sides of the sprocket to align the chain.

The rear sprocket must correspond to within 0.5 cm with the sprocket on the engine. If necessary, shorten the chain to the required length. To remove excess links, you will need to squeeze the chain. Ideally, the tension of both chains (the chain from and the chain from the motor) should be approximately the same.

Remove the protective panel from the left rear side of the motor.

The motor comes with a sprocket that matches the chain included in the kit. If you are not satisfied with the standard bicycle chain that comes with the kit and want to replace it with a biker chain, for example, 415 HD, then you must also replace the sprocket on the motor. Instead of a narrow sprocket, buy a sprocket with wider teeth.

Using a wrench and spark plug, turn the engine sprocket to pass the chain around it.

To achieve the required chain length, measure it and remove excess links. The drive chain is the correct length when the top portion can be deflected 0.25 to 0.5 inches while the bottom portion is tensioned.

Reinstall the chain lock and protection panel on the engine.

The chain tension is adjusted by moving the rear wheel. If you can get both chains to have the same tension, then you won't have to install the idler pulley. If you were unable to tension the chain to the motor as tightly as the chain to the pedals, then you will have to install an idler pulley.

Install the supplied chain guard by attaching it to the motor and frame tube.

Step 4: Tank.

Attach a fuel drain cock to the tank. Use Teflon tape to seal the threaded joint.

Connect the fuel line to the tank and carburetor. Use a quality fuel line, such as GoodYear. The included clear plastic fuel line becomes hard and rigid over time.

Since the engine is a two-stroke engine, motor oil must be mixed into the gasoline. At first, until you use up the first four liters of gasoline, you should maintain a ratio of 18 to 20 parts gasoline to one part oil. In the future, this ratio can be increased to 20–25 to one.

Step 5: Clutch, throttle, kill switch and spark plug.

Install the clutch lever and thread the cable into the engine lever. Pushing the clutch lever disengages the motor from the rear wheel so it can start. Cut off the rest of the cable so you don't get hurt by the very sharp end while pedaling. Make sure you tighten the screw well so it doesn't get lost.

Remove the old handle from the bike and use an Allen wrench to install the throttle on the right side of the bike. Pull the cable from the throttle to the carburetor so that slight resistance is felt when the cable is pulled.

Connect the red wire from the throttle to the frame, and the black wire to the white wire that comes from the motor. When you press the emergency kill switch, the engine should stall, not just stop.

On the engine, there should be a white “spark plug” on the cover of the black box with the wires coming out of it. Connect the black and white wire to the black, the blue wire to the blue.

Step 6: How to start the engine.

Before starting the engine of your homemade motorcycle, press the fuel button and open the carburetor. Pull the clutch all the way down and start until you gain at least a little speed. Then release and turn the throttle. Rotate the pedals until the engine starts. Then, using the throttle, you can simply regulate the speed of the bike.

A bicycle is a vehicle that allows you to simultaneously get to the desired point, take care of your physical fitness and turn every trip into a walk. There is no need to stand in traffic jams or crowd into a crowded subway car on your way home from work. It is environmentally friendly. But it also has a drawback: not everyone can overcome long distances. Still, physical fitness may not allow you to travel several kilometers without stopping. But a solution to the problem can always be found. In this case, you can make a motorbike with your own hands.

Peculiarities

Motorbikes can be purchased at the store. But they are quite expensive, and the appearance is far from desirable. And this design weighs about 20 kg. This weight will make the journey much more difficult if the engine fails and you have to pedal. Such disadvantages can be avoided if you make a motorbike with your own hands.

This type of transport was widely popular among teenagers during the Soviet Union. But modern capabilities and tools make it possible to significantly change an ordinary bicycle and create an original means of transportation. Experienced DIYers, when asked how to make a motorbike with their own hands, will answer that it is very simple. Almost anyone can cope with such an activity.

Types of engines

When getting started, you need to decide which motor is best for your bicycle. They come in two types:

  • Electric, which with the advent of compact but capacious batteries are becoming increasingly popular.
  • Internal combustion engines, which are the traditional option.

To create homemade motorbikes, gasoline engines can be used from a lawn mower, chainsaw and other tools and units.

Engine selection

Most often, an old chainsaw is used as the basis for making a motorbike with your own hands. Or rather, its engine. But here there are some restrictions. You should not take engines from small and light saws. They have too little power. Suitable for a bicycle is a motor whose power is above 2 liters. With. (or 1.5 kW). And the higher this value, the better it will be. But even at this value, the bike will be able to accelerate to 30-35 km/h.

When choosing an engine, you should also pay attention to the volume. In accordance with the Vienna Convention, this value should not exceed 50 cubes. Only in this case, a license and registration of the vehicle will not be needed. The motorized bicycle will fall into the category “bicycles with a suspended engine.”

Another advantage of such an engine is the absence of the smell of gasoline. The motor has virtually no smell, which allows you to store the bike at home. But there is also a drawback. It consists in the characteristic sound of a working chainsaw. The sound of a running engine will accompany you throughout the entire trip.

Connecting individual parts to the frame

To create a motorbike, you can use any rusty, folding one. A motorbike requires only a strong frame as a base. If one is not available, you can make it yourself. To do this you will need several pieces of metal pipe.

The motor is attached to the frame at the junction of the lower and seat tube. This is the most optimal, but not the only option. Sometimes you can see a motor mounted on the trunk. The main thing is that the fastening is reliable. During operation, vibration will be felt, due to which the motor may fall if it is poorly secured. It is recommended to use metal clamps for fastening. A set for a motorbike may include special perforated mounts. But their use is not at all necessary.

In addition to the engine, it is necessary to attach the battery and fuel container to the frame.

Connecting parts

Attaching all the parts individually to the bike frame is only half the job. Next, you need to connect all the elements into one system. Otherwise, a homemade motorbike will lose all its new capabilities.

The first step is to connect the motor so that it transmits rotation to the wheels. A special mechanism must be provided for this. There are two options for these mechanisms: with pulleys or chains.

Includes a pulley system. This is a simpler option. One pulley fits onto the motor shaft. The second is attached to the rear wheel hub. A tension belt is put between them. The disadvantage of this option is the shorter life of the belt (which stretches faster) compared to the chain. It is worth noting that V-belts in terms of their characteristics (service life) are not inferior to chains.

In the case of a chain drive, rotation from the engine to the wheel comes through the chain. On one side it fits onto the rear wheel sprocket. On the other hand, on a gear mounted on the motor shaft. Chain drives are more durable than belt drives. But it requires regular care.

The battery is connected to the engine ignition and brake handle. Next you can install the exhaust pipe. You can do without it, but the exhaust fumes will spoil the trip.

Electric motor installation

Using a gasoline engine when creating a motorbike with your own hands “kills in the bud” the idea of an environmentally friendly vehicle. Therefore, models with electric motors are becoming more and more common. The development of modern technologies makes it possible to do this.

The principle of installing an electric motor is similar to that of gasoline engines. For this you will need, in fact, the motor itself, a battery, control parts, and a controller.

Motor wheel

Another option that can be chosen when creating a motorbike with your own hands is installing a motor-wheel. This option is suitable for those who are versed in electrical engineering. Connecting a motor-wheel requires certain knowledge, without which it will be difficult to assemble an electrical circuit.

The sales kit for the wheel motor includes controllers, front and rear brake handles, the “Pass” system, and a charger.

The battery produces direct current. The controller converts direct current into alternating current, which, in turn, will drive the wheel motor. When the wheels begin to rotate, the electric motor is activated. This is noted by the “Pass” system. There is a microswitch on the brake levers. It is necessary in order to cut off the power supply from the motor to the wheels during braking.

Performed according to the following steps:

  • The bicycle turns upside down. The rear wheel is removed. In its place will be a motor-wheel. It is attached in such a way that the outgoing wires are on the left (when looking in the direction of movement of the bicycle). Due to this, the direction of rotation of the wheel is adjusted. If the sides are swapped, the wheel will “travel” in the opposite direction.
  • The controller and battery are attached to the frame. The controller must be well isolated.
  • Next, the remaining parts are installed and connected.

When assembling an electronic circuit, it is important to remember that the battery is connected through a fuse (20 A is enough). It will protect the system from fire in the event of a short circuit.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are several ways to make a motorbike with your own hands. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. Installing a motor on a bicycle does not interfere with riding in the usual way (pedaling). To do this, you just need to turn off the motor and clutch of the motorbike. This is very convenient when you want to take a leisurely ride and work on your physical fitness. The option of a bicycle equipped with an engine (regardless of its type) is a good option for people choosing an active lifestyle. It is both a recreation and a way to get around the city (and beyond).
