Toyota Camry oil volume 2.5. How to change the oil in a Toyota Camry V50 engine with your own hands? How often does it need to be replaced?

The Toyota Camry business class car is quite reliable and unpretentious, but at the same time, it requires qualified service. Fortunately, this applies to cases with serious breakdowns that only engineers can handle using special diagnostic stands, equipment, etc. As for smaller procedures, such as changing engine oil, they can be done at home. And indeed, as practice shows, even an inexperienced motorist can cope with changing the engine oil. But there is one more task, without which the oil change process is not possible. We are talking about the choice of lubricant, and everything that goes with it. So, using the Toyota Camry as an example, we will consider in detail how to choose the right engine oil and how much to fill it.

How often do you change the oil?

Toyota has developed an oil change schedule for the Camry, which is 20 thousand kilometers. But in some cases this figure can be adjusted downwards - for example, when operating in harsh climatic conditions. In this case, the replacement frequency will have to be reduced to 10-12 thousand kilometers. Thanks to this, the oil will not have time to become unusable, and the engine will last much longer.

In what cases is it necessary to urgently change the oil?

Let us highlight several main factors and signs by which you can judge the condition of the engine oil:

  • The oil has become unusable if it contains dirt deposits, soot, dirt and metal shavings
  • The oil has become unusable if it smells burnt and has a dark brown tint.
  • The gearbox is unstable, there may be delays when changing to the next speed
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • When you press the gas to the floor, the engine does not develop maximum speed
  • Noises and vibrations in the transmission and engine, shaking is transmitted to the steering wheel
  • The general perception of driving a car changes for the better and for the worse.
  • Unpredictable frequency of gearbox and internal combustion engine breakdowns
  • Increased oil consumption

How to choose oil and how much to fill it in

The Toyota manufacturer advises filling only original oil into the Camry engine, but in fact you can save money by using an alternative product. So, today we can already admit that the chemical industry has developed enough to not doubt the analogue oil. But at the same time, you should choose only from proven brands with a good reputation, of which there are quite a few. So, from them we can highlight Castrol, Mobile, ZIK, Lukoil, G-Energy, Kixx and others.

Since even when choosing an analogue oil, one should proceed from the parameters of the original product, in the future we will take them into account. Next, we will consider what kind of oil to fill and how much it is needed depending on the displacement of the Toyota Camry engine.

For engines 1AZ-FE and 2AR-FE (2.0 and 2.5 l respectively)

For these engines, the best oil is Energy Conserving with a recommended SAE viscosity of 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30 or 10W-30. It is advisable to buy universal oil. It is suitable for almost any weather conditions.
According to the API standard, universal motor oils of categories SL, SM and SN are suitable.

In terms of oil volume, a 2-liter engine requires 4.3 liters, and a 2.5-liter engine requires about 4.3 liters of fluid. If you do not take into account the oil filter, the volume is 4.1 and 4.0 liters, respectively.

For 2GR-FE 3.5 l engines

For 6-cylinder engines, Energy Conserving oil or universal ILSAC oil with viscosity parameters 5W-30 and 10W-30 are suitable.

  • Suitable API parameters for the 3.5-liter engine are SL, SM and SN.
  • The volume of oil to be filled, including the oil filter, is 6.1 liters, without it – 5.7 liters.

What is 15W-40

As an example, we will give an oil with the indicated designation. In this case, the number 15 and the letter W indicate the characteristics of the oil at low temperatures. The smaller the number preceding the letter W, the more efficiently and quickly the engine starts in cold weather. In this case, this oil is better suited for warm weather.

The next number - 40 - indicates viscosity at high temperatures. The higher this figure, the better the oil is suitable for high speeds or operation with maximum load.

It can be concluded that for warmer weather conditions, an oil with SAE 10W-30 parameters may be preferred, and for harsher climates, SAE 0W-20 or 5W-20 would be ideal.

Types of oils

Finally, let’s look at the three most popular types of motor oils.

  • Synthetic is a modern oil that is resistant to low temperatures. It has a high degree of fluidity, and due to this it never freezes in frosty weather. This fact allows you to use the oil not only in summer, but also in winter. Recommended for modern cars with low mileage. Ideal for Toyota Camry.
  • Mineral is the worst of all existing oils. It has a low degree of fluidity and is therefore suitable for older cars with a high risk of oil leaks. Due to its excessive thickness, “mineral water” will never flow out even through a microcrack. Perhaps this is the only advantage of mineral oil, along with its low price.
  • Semi-synthetic - includes a mixture of synthetic and mineral oils. It is suitable as a replacement for the mineral composition, as it is superior to it in many ways. This is a more modern and high-quality product. It can be recommended for modern cars with low mileage.
    So, for Toyota Camry it is best to choose synthetic oil, and semi-synthetic oil takes second place.

Among the best brands of motor oils, we note Lukoil, Castrol, ZIK, Mobile, Elf, G-Energy and others.

Changing the engine oil is an important event in the life of every vehicle. Motor oil performs several important tasks, including:

  • Protection of the engine from overheating, as well as its components from accelerated wear.
  • Prevention of corrosion.
  • Removing from working areas such engine work products as metal shavings, soot, carbon deposits, etc.

Depending on the type of oil, it may contain various additives.
They promote self-cleaning of the engine while controlling oil viscosity.

Many motorists are interested in when the oil in a Toyota Camry engine should be changed. This working fluid oxidizes over time and, accordingly, loses its positive properties. Each driver can find the frequency of oil changes in the technical manual for their car. It is worth noting that this figure varies for European and CIS countries, so be sure to find the relevant data in the documentation for the car.

If for some reason you were unable to find this information, then it would be optimal to change the oil on Toyota Camry v40 and v50 every 10 thousand kilometers. You can reach 15 thousand, but this is a last resort. It should be borne in mind that this indicator is also influenced by several parameters such as:

  • Features of car operation (aggressive or calm driving style, frequent stay in traffic jams).
  • The quality of the fuel used.
  • Age of the vehicle.
  • Climatic conditions (in hot weather the oil life is reduced).

In some cases you will need to replace more frequently. Oil wear can also be determined visually. It is necessary to warm up the car to operating temperature, and then take a small amount of oil with a pipette, and then drop it onto regular or filter paper. When it is absorbed, you will see a small spot that consists of an outer and inner circle. If the outer circle is sufficiently blurred and has a light tint, then the oil is in good condition. If the outline of the outer circle is clearly visible and the color of the mark is close to the color of burning, it is recommended to replace it.

What happens if you don’t change the oil in a timely manner?

Driving on used oil carries with it several dangers, in particular:

  • Possible engine overheating. Old oil dissipates heat much worse.
  • Increased friction between moving engine components, resulting in accelerated wear.
  • Reduced anti-corrosion protection.
  • Accumulation of fuel combustion products inside the engine, which eventually clog the oil channels.

All this, at best, will lead to increased fuel consumption, and at worst, to a major engine overhaul.

Engine oil for Toyota Camry

Once you have figured out how often you need to fill in new oil, another question arises - what kind of oil to fill in the Toyota Camry. You can also find the answer in the technical manual for your foreign car. Oil from the car manufacturer guarantees maximum service life and safety for the engine. It is recommended to use original Toyota oils 0W20, 5W30 or 5W40.

The only drawback of such products is the fairly high cost. The market offers a wide selection of analogues. Products from Mobil 1, G-Energy, Valvoline, and Lukoil will be a good purchase. When purchasing, be sure to pay attention to the viscosity parameter. For gasoline and diesel engines, it is necessary to select the appropriate oil.

The manufacturer recommends using synthetic or semi-synthetic products. It provides better engine protection under loads and low temperatures, leaves virtually no residue on the walls of the unit, and generally extends the life of the engine. Also, synthetic oils have less volatility than mineral oils.

How to change oil on a Toyota Camry

Before making a replacement, you need to not only buy new oil, but also an oil filter. It is needed to cleanse the oil of soot and other harmful impurities. Replacing the Toyota Camry oil filter should be done along with changing the oil. On the market you can find both original and compatible parts from third-party manufacturers.

Changing the oil in a Toyota Camry includes the following steps:

Finally, start the car. Make sure there are no leaks anywhere. Now you can change the oil yourself and save money on car service. The procedure is not difficult and will take you no more than 20 minutes.

Having left the warranty, one of the conditions (not entirely fair, by the way) is to undergo maintenance at an official dealer; some owners prefer to perform basic maintenance operations themselves.

Indeed, changing the oil or air filter on most cars is not difficult, so this is not a matter of saving money, but of the desire to work on your own car and confidence in the quality of the work done with your own hands. And, indeed, changing the oil filter in a Toyota Camry is not difficult, let alone adding oil.

Selecting oil and oil filter

For the current body (V50), the manufacturer has established for all engines the use of low-viscosity energy-saving oils (ILSAC classifier - GF-4) with a viscosity of 5W-30 or 0W-20.

The second option is optimal for regions with cold climates. It would be a serious mistake to use common 5W-40 oils, even if they meet the required API quality category (at least SL), since engines designed for low-viscosity oil begin to actively consume thicker oil (thin oil scraper rings cannot cope with a more durable oil film on the cylinder walls). This is especially true for the 3.5-liter 2GR-FE engine.

Accordingly, when choosing an analogue of the original oil, you need to look first of all at the presence of the ILSAC classifier - for example, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy, Castrol Edge Professional A5 meet the requirements. Filling volumes: for a two-liter engine - 4.3 liters, for a 2.5 engine - 4.4 liters, a 3.5 engine will require 5.7 liters.

The 1AZ-FE engine (2 liters) uses a filter with the original designation 90915-10004. Its analogs are Mahle OC17, MANN W610/9, Champion COF100138S.

The 2.5-liter 2AR-FE engine is no longer equipped with a housing filter, but with a cartridge filter. The cartridge installation kit for vehicles not manufactured for the Japanese market is marked 04152-31090. Analogues - MANN HU 7019 Z, Bosch F026407098.

The 2GR-FE engine (3.5 l) also uses a cartridge filter with the same number and analogues.

Do-it-yourself oil change in a Toyota Camry engine

To work, you will need an inspection hole or overpass, a basic mechanic’s kit (for removing the crankcase protection), and for greatest convenience, an oil filter disc puller. Considering that on Camry engines the oil filter or cartridge housing faces down, it will be most convenient to use such a puller.

It is best to start working on the car when the engine is not sufficiently warmed up or cold: there is no need to heat up the low-viscosity oil, it will flow out just fine, but there will be no risk of getting burned. Also, changing the oil in a Toyota Camry engine will require a supply of rags and a container of suitable volume for draining.

Removing the crankcase protection is the same on all cars - the bolts around the perimeter are unscrewed, the protection is carefully moved down and to the side. At the same time, it should be cleaned of any dirt that accumulates on top.

First, the main volume of oil is drained from the pan - the drain plug is turned out, the stream is “caught” by the container, after which you can unscrew the filler plug - if you turn it out immediately, the oil stream will be stronger, and when it hits the bottom of the container, splashes will rise.

After draining the oil until it stops dripping, you can replace the drain plug and start changing the oil filter. A housing-type filter is changed traditionally - the old one is turned out, its mating surface is wiped, then the seal of the new filter is moistened with oil, and the filter is tightened by hand.

Having unscrewed the cartridge filter, remove the old cartridge from the housing, drain the remaining oil from the housing and insert a new one (plastic shank down).

Before installation, wipe the groove under the cartridge in the crankcase, making sure that the fibers of the rag do not get into the central channel (supplying oil to the engine).

Then oil is poured into the engine while simultaneously monitoring the oil level - it should be at the top mark or slightly above it. We start the engine, let it run a little and turn it off - during this time the oil pump will drive air out of the system. We especially note that neither the filter nor the cartridge needs to be pre-filled with oil - it is easier for the pump to drive the system through a dry curtain, rather than one moistened with oil, and air will remain in the system in any case.

In the time it takes for the oil accelerated by the pump to drain into the sump, you can have time to install the protection in place. Then the oil level is brought to the top mark of the dipstick.

Changing consumable parts on a Toyota Camry is a pleasure for the motorist. The engine oil filter is no exception. Just lift the front of the car, and right under the engine you will find both the drain plug and the filter housing. The filter is replaced together with an oil change. It is recommended to do this after 15,000 km, but this is an approximate number. If the car is operated under increased loads, this number will be reduced to 7,000 km.
So, let's begin.
1. Let's prepare tools and materials.
14 mm socket wrench – for drain plug;
a special key for unscrewing the plug at the bottom of the filter housing;
special key remover for the filter housing (indicated by an arrow);
container for collecting oil;
original filter;
oil (SAE OW 20);
paper towel, rags.

2.Important! Secure the raised machine before climbing to unscrew the plug and filter (they are indicated by arrows). Place the container, unscrew the plug (14 mm wrench) and drain the used oil.
Photo 2.

3. While the oil is draining, prepare a special key puller (green arrow). Let's check the condition of the sealing gasket on the drain plug. It can be cut from paronite. We wrap the cork.

4.Using a puller, unscrew the filter housing.

5. We took the filter out of the housing and checked the oil-resistant sealing ring. It comes with a filter (check when purchasing). Let's replace the ring and clamp it with a clamping plug (the plug and the place where it needs to be screwed are indicated by a white arrow).

6.And here is the top of the case. Replaced the rubber sealing ring of the housing. We insert the filter into the housing. Further operations proceed in reverse order.

7.Filter housing in place. Now you need to use special wrenches to tighten the filter cover and housing. There is no need to make excessive efforts.

8. Using the recommendations for changing the oil, fill it as much as indicated in the table.

The first number is the top level. The second number is the lower level. They are marked on the dipstick. Place the car horizontally and fill with the upper level amount, then start the engine and stop it. Take the measurement again, the level will drop (the system will fill). Top up to normal and off you go.

Frequency of oil changes in automatic transmission Toyota Camry 2.5 l. V50 and other car models approximately once every 70 thousand mileage. The procedure is necessary in order to ensure better operation of the automatic transmission, extend the life of the mechanism, as well as the components associated with it. This stage of car maintenance is of great importance and should not be neglected.

How often does it need to be replaced?

During operation of the transmission of any car, especially if it is new, grinding of parts occurs, as a result of which a certain amount of chips gets into the oil. As it is produced, the fluid becomes more viscous and darker, and begins to interfere with the operation of the gears. That is why you should strictly observe the frequency of maintenance and update the oil on time. And therefore it is difficult to answer the question of how much oil is needed.

You can find out the exact number by looking at the service book, however, if the car is not new, the book may be lost. Different experts recommend different periods of consumable fluids - from 40 to 110 thousand km. The more often the oil is changed, the better, but for optimal operation of the gearbox you need to intervene no more than 70 thousand km. This principle is considered the most suitable, since it requires less financial costs, and the oil is not changed at the most critical moment, having time to remove contaminants without becoming unsuitable for further use.

Selection of consumables

Changing the Toyota Camry automatic transmission oil should be carried out not only regularly, but also with the correct fluid. To carry out the work, it is recommended to use original Toyota WS oil, which the manufacturer fills at the factory. However, this option is quite expensive and cannot always be found in stores. Most often, motorists use ATF Type-TLS-LV, which is its complete analogue.

The automatic transmission oil filter must be installed with a new one at every oil change. You can find both the original and cheaper analogues on sale; they are practically no different. It is worth paying attention to the fact that the Toyota Camry V40, regardless of engine power, is equipped with a gasket located in the gearbox. This part cannot be replaced with sealant; the gasket must be present.

In addition, the Toyota Camry V40 requires 4 liters for replacement, so it is more convenient to buy a large package at once, which will cost less than 4 1 liters.

How to replace it yourself?

Camry V40 2.4 and Camry 3.5 do not differ in transmission design, so they require the same maintenance. If you have certain skills, time and desire, you can change the oil in an automatic transmission yourself in a garage. However, it is worth warning that this is a rather labor-intensive procedure, and if you are afraid of doing it incorrectly, it is better to contact a specialized car service center where everything will be done according to the scheme. It is not possible to completely change the oil in a garage; this requires the use of specialized equipment. Many make do with partial replacement, which is quite affordable.

On a Toyota Camry, replacement should be accompanied not only by replacing the gasket and filter, but also by removing the pan. This is necessary in order to check the condition of the automatic transmission, remove dirt, and check for chips. Changing the gearbox oil on a Camry is partially quite simple. All you need to do is drain the old fluid and add new one.

Keep in mind that at home it will not be possible to drain more than half of the liquid. When the fluid in an automatic transmission on a Camry is partially changed, an average mass is formed, suitable for further use. However, if large metal shavings or a large amount of it are detected, it is necessary not only to completely update the consumables, but also to repair the box, as this is a symptom of a gear malfunction.

On a Camry, the number of partial replacements should be twice the number of full replacements, since only 2.0 liters of fluid are poured, and accordingly, it gets dirty faster.

Work order

On a Camry V50 2.5 l, the oil is changed in the same way as on a Camry V40 3.5.

  1. You need to work with the Kemri car by placing it on a horizontal surface that does not have slopes. The box must be slightly warmed up, as in the case of a manual transmission, when it is necessary to perform a similar operation. The transmission lever must be placed in all positions one by one, finally setting it to parking mode;
  2. After this, you need to measure the oil level in the automatic transmission; this procedure is also carried out after changing the oil in the Toyota automatic transmission. For this purpose, the design provides a special probe;
  3. in order to drain the oil, you need to pull out the plug; prepare a container in advance so that the waste flows there; keep in mind that it is hot and will take about 15 minutes to drain;
  4. after this you need to remove the gasket and unscrew the pan. Parts need to be washed and carefully inspected. You also need to unscrew the magnetic plug, wash it, and remove any chips, if any. There is no need to wait for the automatic transmission to cool down before adding new oil;
  5. you need to replace the filter and gasket, put the pan in place and fill it with fresh water. Afterwards, you need to start the Camry car, let the power unit run for 5-7 minutes, switch the gearbox mode, and turn off the engine.
