Clean the throttle sensor. Cleaning the throttle body - fashion or necessity? How to tell when it's time to clean your throttle body

Files:

Rationale: problems with the throttle valve appear even after a short mileage (30-50 thousand km). The damper becomes contaminated with oil and carbon deposits carried through the crankcase ventilation system into the engine intake tract. The throttle valve should not close completely; a certain amount of air clearance is required when the engine is idling. Contaminants partially cover this gap and the system is forced to compensate for the lack of air, but only to a certain extent. If the air flow decreases more than the engine control unit can compensate, an error occurs, which appears as a check engine signal on the dashboard.

Exist two types of technology: with removal of the damper and directly on the car, and cleaning directly on the car is comprehensive. In this case, contamination is removed not only from the damper itself, but also from the entire intake tract, including the intake valves.

Cleaning with removal:

1. Removing the damper: Disconnect the cooling system hoses and the damper position sensor wiring. Unscrew the fasteners and remove the damper body.

2. Cleaning the damper: Place the removed damper in a suitable container. Spray aerosol on the dirt, art. 7578, let it work for a short time. In case of heavy contamination, wipe with a plastic brush and repeat spraying. Pay special attention to cleaning the starting gap and the damper shaft. Blow off any remaining dirt with compressed air or wipe with a rag. The valve in the housing should rotate without delays or jams.

3. Reinstall the damper, restore connections and communications.

Cleaning without removal:

1. Provide access to the throttle valve: with the engine warm and turned off, if necessary, remove the trim, remove the air supply duct. Provide easy access to the throttle valve.

2. Spray the cleaning composition (Liqui Moly Pro-line Drosselklappen-Reiniger or Liqui Moly MTX Vergaser-Reiniger) inside the throttle body, using approximately 100-150 ml of the composition. Let the composition act for 2-3 minutes.

3. Start the engine and maintain a speed of about 2-2.5 thousand min and continue spraying the remaining composition. If you use Liqui Moly Pro-line Drosselklappen-Reiniger with a long probe, it can be used to get as close as possible to the intake valves of each cylinder. The engine will emit white-gray smoke; this is normal and indicates that cleaning is proceeding properly. It is necessary to maintain increased engine speed and ensure that the engine does not stall.

4. Stop the engine. Restore connections, check engine operation and engine control unit errors. If necessary, erase errors.

It is convenient to monitor the effectiveness of the cleaning procedure using a gas analyzer; this is obvious. In our case, the concentration of CO decreased by three times, CH by five times. The check engine signal and jerks in engine operation have been eliminated.

Have you ever wondered why the engine reacts when you press the gas pedal? Thanks to the throttle valve, you can control the speed of the vehicle. Like any machine mechanism, the throttle can become dirty. If you allow this device to become excessively clogged, it will be more difficult for you to operate the machine. What should you do if the throttle valve in your car is too clogged? Let's discuss this issue.

Purpose of the throttle valve cleaner

Every car owner understands that the engine is the heart of the car. Since the engine is constantly in operation, it is prone to contamination. This is why engine elements need periodic cleaning. In particular, the throttle valve needs to be cleaned. To successfully carry out the operation, you need to use special products to clean the throttle. There are also craftsmen who use quite exotic means for these purposes. But there is no need to reinvent the wheel now.

You can use liquids that are made specifically for cleaning the throttle. Thanks to these products, the throttle valve will remain clean for a long time. That is, the next cleaning will need to be done not in a week, but after 50 - 60 thousand km. mileage A special product will not only protect the throttle from contamination, but will also not have any detrimental effect on the element. This will be true if everything is done correctly. The cleaners contain a solvent and various additives, which together will produce the desired result.

The Liqui Moly brand is a leader in the production of auto chemicals, in particular throttle valve cleaners. Of course, this company is not the only one of its kind, but it has still proven itself to be the best. If the nearest automotive chemical store does not have a product from the above-mentioned manufacturer, you can purchase a regular carburetor spray. Some people use WD-40 or acetone. These products remove oil deposits and dirt, but can cause irreparable damage to the throttle mechanism itself.

Using Throttle Body Cleaner

Liqui Moly Pro-Line is a liquid that is designed to clean the throttle body of a car. This product can dissolve various types of deposits, after which they can be easily removed. The cleaner will also be able to deal with particles of oil, glue, resin and other compounds. As for the properties of such a liquid, they can be divided into the following points:

1. Fast and effective removal of carbon deposits.

2. To superficially clean the mechanism, it does not need to be dismantled.

3. The product is very easy and convenient to use.

4. Excellent compatibility with catalysts.

Liqui Moly Pro-Line is suitable for cleaning not only throttle bodies, but also axles and intake manifolds. You can also use special aerosols to clean the throttle. They need to be applied to the surface, left for 15 minutes and the dirt removed.

Throttle Body Cleaning Procedure

It should also be said about the causes of pollution. Deposits appear on the throttle valve due to crankcase gases that carry oil dust. Gases enter the combustion chamber accidentally, leaking through the valve cover of the ventilation system. The crankcase gases include residues of the fuel mixture and its combustion products, as well as oil particles. It is the oil that creates a layer of contamination on the valve, and it is this that should be removed.

Signs of an excessively dirty throttle valve include:

- the engine starts with malfunctions;

Idle speed is uneven;

A failure occurs when switching from idle;

The car twitches when accelerating (at speeds below 15 km/h).

There are several ways to remove carbon deposits from a throttle body. Some people blow the cleaning agent into the mechanism while the engine is running. This option will not be very successful and gentle, and it is very undesirable to pour the cleaning composition directly into the mechanism.

It is difficult to dismantle the unit, but it is better to do so. Indeed, due to the excessive aggressiveness of damper cleaners, elements made of plastic and rubber may be damaged. It is in order to protect the rubber and plastic elements that everything needs to be disassembled. Under no circumstances should you spray the cleaner thoughtlessly; you should only apply it to the elements that need to be cleaned. If you use a cloth for cleaning, you will not only make everything neater, but also more thorough. Throttle cleaning has a number of features:

Before using auto chemicals, read the instructions for the product and follow the operating mode specified by the manufacturer. Always wipe the surface thoroughly to ensure that no threads or fabric lint remain on it. If present, blow the surface with compressed air. Foreign elements must not be allowed to enter the system while the motor is running.

Do not resort to using a brush, which will remove a thin layer of molybdenum from the surface of the parts - this is extremely undesirable, because this coating facilitates the passage of air. Be careful when cleaning - you may accidentally flood the throttle sensor, which cannot be removed.

It is highly advisable not to use cotton swabs, which will leave a lot of lint on the parts. To clean the throttle valve, proceed as follows: Remove the tube that pumps crankcase gases from the idle system. The tube needs to be cleaned, since it is directly involved in the combustion processes of fuel, which makes it susceptible to severe contamination.

Loosen the screw that secures the air filter pipe. Disconnect the fasteners located at the edges of the air filter cover. Then you can proceed directly to cleaning the throttle. Disconnect the tube that attaches to the vacuum valve.

Start the engine and leave it running until it warms up. This is especially important, since due to temperature the throttle cleaner will more actively perform its function.

Carefully treat the following parts with the product:

- intake manifold. Treat the walls by thoroughly spraying the cleaner on them

Air supply channel. It is located close to the throttle and ensures an increase in engine speed during warm-up. The air flows through an ellipsoidal opening. The channel must be cleaned very carefully so that no remaining dirt enters the system.

Next, clean the tube on the intake manifold. Treat it from the inside. There is a rubber tube going to it; a lot of dirt accumulates at the attachment point. The damper assembly itself.

The best cleaning effect will be achieved if you preheat the engine. Apply liberally to all the above-mentioned nodes, then wait 5 to 7 minutes. Thanks to this, particles of old dirt will quickly peel off. After this, start the engine again, process the components a second time, but just do not turn off the engine. So the result from processing will be the best.

Throttle valve- This is a damper that is directly connected to the gas pedal of the car. The throttle valves and gas pedals on modern cars are electronic.

Basic elements of the throttle valve

How does the driver control engine speed? By pressing the gas, he opens the throttle, increasing the diameter of the space through which the engine is supplied with air. The more air enters the engine, the more fuel the engine ECU (computer) supplies, while maintaining the required air/gasoline ratio. The large mass of the air-fuel mixture leads to an instant increase in speed (and power, respectively).

Why do you need to clean the throttle body?

Checking operation after cleaning

So, the throttle valve is a kind of “breathing organ” of the engine. Along with the air from the environment, dust gets into it, which managed to bypass the air filter.

The engine also contains a system such as a crankcase gas recirculation system. Gases accumulate in the crankcase, consisting of oil dust, exhaust gases, and fuel that has not had time to burn in the cylinders.

In accordance with modern environmental requirements, the designers decided to send these gases back to the cylinders for the purpose of afterburning them. The gases pass through the oil separator, but a small percentage of the oil still remains in them. Their path to the cylinders lies through the throttle valve.

Dust settling

Dust settling

That's where it happens mixing oil dust with regular dust. This black, sticky mass settles in the throttle working space, through which air flows into the engine.

The resulting layer affects the diameter, and therefore the throttle capacity. This affects the operation of the engine, its response to sudden pressing of the gas pedal. In addition, the oily mixture can get into the IAC, which adversely affects the idle speed. Therefore, it is necessary to clean the throttle from unwanted formations inside it.

Symptoms that may occur when the throttle is clogged

  • When the throttle valve is clogged, there is some sluggish response to the gas pedal . An engine with a clean throttle body responds to the accelerator much more quickly.
  • Accumulated dirt in the throttle body restricts air flow and can cause Smooth operation of the engine at idle, speed “floats”.
  • May be observed car jerking at low speeds and speeds
  • If the degree of contamination is very high, unauthorized engine stops are possible, i.e. the car stalls .
  • Fuel consumption. The engine ECU (computer) detects too little air flow and increases idle speed, thereby increasing fuel consumption .

What to do to prevent the damper from getting dirty too quickly

Its condition will depend on the frequency of replacing the air filter, the use of high-quality internal combustion engine oil, and the serviceability of the oil separator of the crankcase gas recirculation system. In general, the cleaning procedure is not labor-intensive and not expensive. Therefore, if the above symptoms occur, or simply during maintenance, it is recommended to check the condition of the throttle valve. The resource of the node itself is very high, but it is worth keeping an eye on it, since it performs quite important and delicate work.

Fast throttle method

Conclusion

Throttle valve contamination is a natural phenomenon for it.. Cleaning the throttle, depending on operating conditions, is done quite rarely, approximately once every 100 thousand kilometers. The degree of contamination is easy to determine by eye, and if the metal inside is covered with a black, greasy layer of dirt, then it’s time to clean it.

Most domestic drivers are already accustomed to performing minor car repairs at home. Pumping the brakes, changing the oil - no self-respecting car enthusiast will deny himself the pleasure of “poking around” under the hood of his car. The same applies to such a simple operation as cleaning the throttle valve. We will discuss later in the article how to do all the work correctly and what tools should be used.

1 When to flush the throttle valve

Initially, we should understand the design of the throttle valve and its operating principles. This part is located in front of the car’s intake manifold and is responsible for the passage of air into it. Accordingly, the wider the damper is open, the more air passes into the car’s engine. Next, the air mass is mixed with fuel and sent to the combustion chamber of the car. Thus, the more air is mixed with fuel, the higher the vehicle’s power rating. By pressing the accelerator pedal, the driver steers. The car's gas pedal is connected to the throttle valve using a special cable and operates on a mechanical principle. However, today you can find cars on the market equipped with a manually operated choke.

The throttle valve is one of the few parts that may be needed extremely rarely. The period of operation of the element is equal to the period of use of the vehicle itself. It is necessary to replace a part only when it has received mechanical damage. Much more often the throttle valve needs to be flushed. This operation should be performed approximately once every 6–12 months. This need is directly related to the ingress of all kinds of gases and dust from the crankcase protection onto the body and inside the part, as well as a large amount of oil from other parts of the machine.

The first signs that your car needs throttle body cleaning are:

  • unstable starting of the car engine;
  • intermittent engine idling;
  • the car often jerks when driving in initial gears;
  • The car “fails” when operated with fast gear changes.

If you discover this behavior in your car, you should not immediately run to the nearest service center to replace parts. All we need to do is clean the existing throttle body. Every car owner can perform this operation.

3 How to flush the throttle valve

Cleaning the throttle valve does not require special equipment. An aerosol is best for this. Liqui Moly. This product perfectly removes dirt on the surface and inside the device. To wash the part, just spray it with an aerosol and leave for 15 minutes. After this, rinse off the detergent with a damp cloth and wipe dry.

Another good solution would be to use the product Carb Medic. It has a strong smell, so before cleaning your throttle body with this aerosol, you should wear a protective mask. Next, carefully spray the part with the composition and leave for 30 minutes. After this, wash off with a damp cloth.

As we have seen, there is nothing difficult in flushing the throttle valve. The main desire. And your car will reward you with good power and an enjoyable driving experience.

The injector throttle valve (IZ) is an essential component of the starting system for gasoline power units, which is designed to regulate the volume of air flowing into the engine. The need to clean it does not arise often, but it is worth knowing how to clean the injector throttle valve, because this can happen at any time on a used car.

Symptoms of remote sensing contamination

ATTENTION! A completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption has been found! Don't believe me? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also didn’t believe it until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

Typically, symptoms of damper contamination include the following:

  • the power plant speed drops and freezes, a complete engine stop is possible;
  • while driving, the engine functions unstably and unevenly;
  • in XX mode the speed fluctuates;
  • starting the engine becomes more difficult for no reason.

One of the main signs of a dirty valve is poor traction at low speeds. In addition, the car jerks while moving, especially when accelerating. Why is this happening?

How does the remote control become contaminated?

A lot of all kinds of deposits accumulate on the walls of the damper, which block the passage of air at small opening angles of the remote control. Obviously, this was not initially provided by the manufacturer. Engineers calculated the dynamics of the car based on normal indicators, for pure remote sensing, as they say. For this reason, as soon as the damper becomes dirty, traction begins to fail. After proper cleaning, all processes are improved, including fuel consumption.

Cleaning the engine protection is mandatory after washing the injector nozzles. In addition, the procedure is recommended for carrying out after the simultaneous appearance of 2-3 of the signs described above (maybe all together).

It will be useful to know that the main source of contamination of the remote control is the filtration (operation) of the crankcase. On older engines, oil deposits come out of the crankcase. The steam settles and cools, turning into deposits.

Do I need to check the remote control often? Yes, if the car is used, definitely. This must be done every time you service the power unit. If traces of carbon deposits are visible on the valve, as in the photo, it is necessary to urgently begin the procedure for cleaning the throttle valve.

If the car has a remote control and IAC, then the sensor also needs to be thoroughly washed.

What is throttle adaptation or learning

DZ can be washed at home, although this largely depends on the car model. For example, if the car has a cable-operated, mechanical gas pedal (standard), you can safely start cleaning. Not at all, if an electronic throttle is installed, the situation changes. Adaptation may be needed.

The adaptation is reset either from the scanner or forcibly when the accelerator pedal is simply pressed all the way and the accelerator pedal is lowered when the internal combustion engine is standing. Adaptation is nothing more than a decrease in throttle angle (throttle opening angle). Often, after flushing the electronic throttle, the throttle valve opens more than necessary.

There are people who claim that after several tens of kilometers the remote sensing system automatically adapts, but this is not so. There have been cases when, even after 200 km, the car remained at floating speed. They instantly disappeared after forced adaptation.

Here's how training (adaptation) is carried out:

  • the battery current is checked, which should be within 12.9 volts (with the engine standing);
  • the temperature of the antifreeze is checked (should be 70-99°);
  • the gearbox must be thoroughly warmed up and the steering wheel must be in neutral;
  • The car should be placed on a level surface, all consumers should be turned off.

After that:

  • start the engine and count to five;
  • then quickly press the gas pedal all the way and release (repeat 5 times);
  • After that, count to seven, and then press the accelerator pedal all the way and hold it until the Check indicator starts flashing;
  • release the pedal after this, counting to three;
  • start the engine again if it stalls and count to twenty;
  • give gas and check that the speed automatically returns to standard in idle mode.

DIY cleaning

How do you clean the throttle valve on the injector? The easiest way is to use carburetor cleaner. The throttle body opens forcibly, and the liquid from the carburetor washes away all the dirt from the inside. You can also clean it with a piece of soft cloth.

If the DZ is removed, then you can clean it with anything: solvent, brush. The main thing is not to use harsh abrasive compounds or sharp, rough objects.

When using carburetor cleaner in an aerosol can, it is recommended to wear glasses. The liquid is under pressure; when washed, it scatters in all directions and can get into the eyes.

It is not at all necessary to remove the remote control. Cleaning can be done by car, although washing and removal gives a much more effective result. In addition, cleaning without removal is impossible if an XX sensor is installed on the machine and it is connected to the damper.

In practice, washing the protective gear without removing it is quite sufficient. There are also advantages to this procedure: there is no risk of breaking the sealing seal, which is located between the VC (manifold) and the damper, you can clean it on a hot engine, there is no risk of being scalded with hot antifreeze, etc.

If you decide to clean the remote control by removing it, you must remember to bleed the air. To do this, unscrew the cap of the antifreeze tank.

  1. Do not use excessive force when cleaning the ESD, even if you have a soft cloth or rags in your hands. The damper material is very sensitive, because it is coated with molybdenum for smoother passage of air, in addition, the TPS (sensor) can be easily damaged.
  2. Clean the damper only when really necessary.
  3. It is better to use soft cloths for cleaning, but not brushes. Even with soft bristles, they can easily remove molybdenum along with plaque.
