BMW f10 dimensions. Car "BMW F10" (BMW F10): technical characteristics, test drive, photo. Equipment and configuration

Many say that the BMW 5 Series F10/F11 has exceeded the design complexity critical point. It's clear that the Munich-based automaker wanted to create a car that would be at the top of its class. And in many ways he succeeded. But after carefully studying the stories of the owners, it is worth recognizing that this BMW is controversial.

With the light hand of a Pole

The styling of the F10 was developed by Jacek Frölich, a Pole who has worked in the BMW design team for many years. The successor to the BMW E60 was supposed to be sportier and more elegant. This was a success, and sales were good from the first days.

The BMW 5 Series F10 has an absolutely unimaginable number of configurations. It is available in three body types. It was equipped with 4, 6, 8-cylinder petrol and 4, 6-cylinder diesel engines (with one, two and even three turbochargers). The power units were paired with a 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic transmission. The car can be rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Equipment mazes

Often, many BMW F10 owners are unaware of the existence of certain functions. For example, in the menu you can program the time during which the external lights should be on - the follow-me-home function (take me home) - to illuminate the area at night after turning off the engine. Some cars even have a thermal imager.

In addition to a very long list of options, it was possible to purchase bodywork packages: Shadowline, Modern Line or M-package. To help you get the most out of your driving experience: active EDC suspension, active anti-roll bars and intelligent Active Steering.

The most sought-after equipment on the aftermarket is the Professional navigation with a 10.2-inch screen and comfortable seats, while the EDC suspension with variable damping and the active steering system are not particularly valued. Active cruise control and Head-Up projection are common.

This dubious moment

Reliability and operation generate the most controversy. While the quality of the plastics and the precision of the fittings are good, the Nappa leather upholstery is disappointing. It's not as durable as you'd expect from a premium brand.

The BMW F10 has a lot of systems that need to be constantly taken care of. The ZF 8HP automatic transmission requires an oil change every 60,000 km. And all-wheel drive versions of xDrive need to update the fluid even more frequently - on average once every 40-50 thousand km.

Some diesel engines (in particular 6-cylinder versions with all-wheel drive) are equipped with a selective catalyst that requires topping up with a special AdBlue fluid. It is inexpensive (about $1 per liter), and the computer will inform you about the need to replenish it.

But the most important question: what about reliability? In response, owners have a lot to say. Mechanics reassure: while the car is under warranty, everything is not so bad. Some examples on the secondary market still have a warranty on important components and assemblies. As a rule, only cars from the Premium Selection program offer a full warranty package.

There are malfunctions in the operation of systems, the existence of which drivers sometimes do not even suspect. For example, a pedestrian protection system that raises the hood in the event of a collision (its sensor is covered by the service department). Sometimes there are complaints about cars equipped with active steering being pulled to the right. The problem can be resolved by updating the software. Noisy and expensive run-flat tires have come under widespread criticism.

Manual transmission failures occur: it is not possible to change gear or engage reverse. Repairs are quite expensive.

Engines

The two-liter N20 petrol unit suffers from one serious problem. After 70-120 thousand km, the chain drive of the oil pump fails - a howl occurs. Timely contacting service will help preserve the engine. To replace the drive in a regular service they will ask about 35,000 rubles. If you ignore the symptoms, the consequences will be sad - a major engine overhaul. Depending on the degree of damage, you will have to pay from 150 to 300 thousand rubles to restore the unit. In 2014, the problem node was improved, and the disease began to appear much less frequently.

Ailments are demonstrated by the catalytic converter (20,000 rubles with work) and injectors (from 5,000 rubles). The injectors are enough for 60-100 thousand km. If one surrenders, then the rest will soon capitulate.

A little later you have to change the thermostat (3-4 thousand rubles), and then the fuel pump (from 9,000 rubles). After 100,000 km, it’s time to lay the valve cover and the cover itself, where the crankcase ventilation valve is built. The cost of a new cover is 26,000 rubles. A little later, the radiator may leak (from 18,000 rubles).

Fuel injection pump 528 may require attention after 150,000 km. You will have to pay at least 25,000 rubles for a new pump.

The least problematic engine in the BMW 5 F10 is the 3-liter petrol N55. However, there is no talk of stability at the M54 level. By the way, it is also equipped with not the most durable fuel injectors.

V8 engines of the N63 series experience high thermal loads, since two turbines are installed directly in the camber of the block. The heat from superchargers leads to rapid aging of valve stem seals, which in turn increases oil consumption and coking of the rings. As a preventive measure, motorists recommend changing the caps after 20-30 thousand km, which will cost about 30,000 rubles. The constructive miscalculation is most clearly manifested in the charged “Emkas” with the S63.

Diesel engines of the N47 series still had a serious defect - premature wear of the timing chain. In most cases, the defect was discovered during the warranty period. When purchasing a car with such a diesel unit, the warranty for which has already expired, you need to be careful. Do not underestimate noise and clicking noises at idle.

Replacing the chain requires removing the engine or at least disconnecting it from the transmission. The cost to fix the problem will be about $1,000. The vulnerability usually occurs due to an indecently long oil change interval. Often, owners go for maintenance only when the on-board computer calls. And by this time the mileage on one oil sometimes reaches 20-30 thousand km. This is guaranteed to kill the engine by 70-120 thousand km! To avoid problems or delay them, the replacement interval should be reduced to 8-10 thousand km. It is worth noting that in 2013 the problem was almost completely eliminated.

In addition, there are malfunctions in the exhaust gas recirculation system and malfunctions of the fuel system. In the latter case, the high-pressure fuel pump (from 73,000 rubles) is most often to blame. It wears out, begins to drive chips and damages the fuel injectors (from 26,000 rubles apiece). Symptoms: difficulty starting, uneven engine operation and “check” on the panel. With high mileage, problems may occur with the exhaust manifold (cracking) or with the turbine (play or broken rotor).

Another drawback is the wear of the crankshaft damper pulley. The rubber damper delaminates and disintegrates. A characteristic symptom is a knocking sound in the engine compartment. The pulley will have to be replaced - from 11,000 rubles. After 100,000 km, the intake manifold and EGR valve become dirty (from 12,000 rubles). The USR cooler may also leak (from 30,000 rubles).

Since 2014, the BMW 5 Series has been equipped with a new B47 series engine, which has not yet shown so many ailments.

The N57 6-cylinder diesel engine is more durable and problems with it are extremely rare. However, after 200-250 thousand km, additional investments will most likely be required. If you change the oil according to the recommendation of the on-board computer, then troubles with the timing chain drive cannot be avoided here either.

The twin-charged N57 was installed in the 535d, and the triple-charged one in the M550d.

All diesel units are equipped with a particulate filter. He can also cause trouble. The DPF filter becomes clogged during frequent trips over short distances (for example, when operating in the city). Burning usually helps. In addition, the back pressure sensor may require replacement.

It is worth noting that maintenance and repair of a petrol V8 biturbo or diesel R6 triturbo is a rather difficult task, which affects the owner’s wallet.

Transmission

The most common complaint about the machine is jerking. They are often eliminated by updating the software. But some people had to repair the box after 100,000 (from 100,000 rubles). The clutches, torque converter and valve body were supplied.

The elastic coupling of the rear propeller shaft (3,500 rubles) wears out closer to 100,000 km. Sometimes the destruction of the rear universal joint flange is discovered (from 20,000 rubles). In the future, the rear gearbox seals may leak, and after 150,000 km, you have to update the silent block mounting the rear axle gearbox (5-10 thousand rubles including work).

In all-wheel drive versions of XDrive, after 80-120 thousand km, the outer CV joint of the front drive often begins to crunch. It can only be replaced as an assembly (from 26,000 rubles for an analogue). Jerks during intense acceleration will indicate that transfer case repair is approaching. A new transfer case will cost 250,000 rubles, and a restored one will cost 35,000 rubles. For the bulkhead they will ask about 100,000 rubles.

Chassis

The suspension doesn't pose any particular problems. It is well adapted to Russian roads. However, the first major repair may be needed after 100,000 km. Repairs are quite expensive, which is the norm in the premium class.

You have to replace the front levers (from 4,000 rubles per lever), front wheel bearings (from 6,000 rubles) and front shock absorbers. A knock in the steering wheel can be caused by wear on the cardan at the bottom of the steering shaft (14,000 rubles). Sometimes the steering rack makes knocks and clicks.

Other problems and malfunctions

After a while, the aluminum inserts located on the inner sill trim come off. And cracks may appear in the lower part of the head optics. A new original headlight unit costs 26,000 rubles, and an analogue from Asia costs 11,000 rubles. Bi-xenon optics are much more expensive - 53,000 rubles.

Every now and then the heated driver's seat fails. The heating mat is sewn to the upholstery and can be replaced as an assembly - 60,000 rubles. But sometimes a broken wiring can be repaired - about 5,000 rubles.

The coating on the air conditioner fan speed control button wears off quite quickly. The manufacturer has provided new buttons, available only as a set for 6,000 rubles. In a well-known Chinese store you can purchase the required button for 700 rubles.

Sometimes the door locks don't work. For example, in winter, moisture gets into the cable of the front door locking mechanism and freezes. If the lock itself fails, it will have to be replaced (from 9,000 rubles).

Conclusion

Although the model is still young, many typical faults are already known. Unfortunately, there are too many of them. In addition, the design of the car is so complex that sometimes even official service specialists cannot cope with its repair. But when everything works properly, the BMW F10 surpasses all its rivals in terms of emotion.

Typical faults

  • - timing chain stretching N47 (2-liter diesel);
  • - howling of the oil pump in 2-liter gasoline turbo engines;
  • - damage to the air conditioner condenser;
  • - wear of the front axle shafts of all-wheel drive modifications;
  • - move to the right.

Advantages

  • - perfectly adapted suspension;
  • - fantastic dynamics and driving performance;
  • - rich equipment;
  • - the model is still relevant, which means ease of resale and a relatively small loss in price.

Flaws

  • - too high cost of maintenance;
  • - too many malfunctions, especially electronics and diesel engines;
  • - high risk of theft;
  • - many cars after an accident.

There are so many functions on a BMW that many car owners simply do not know about their existence. Let's list some of them.

The F10 has active steering. This is a Servotronic system with electric power steering. Let's add a powerful brake package here. It includes electronic assistants and disk units “in a circle”. Maximum driving comfort is provided by the Active Steering system (this is intelligent steering control) and active anti-roll bars/EDC suspension (the stiffness of the shock absorbers is adjusted). Through the menu, the owner can program the burning time of the external lights. The function is called “follow-me-home”. On many cars, the backlight stops as soon as the power unit “stalls”. On the BMW F10 it does not turn off at night. Lights up for as many minutes as programmed. Some models are even equipped with a thermal imager!

Options include Head-Up projection with active cruise control.

Car safety is at the highest level. Numerous test drives have proven this. As a result of testing, EuroNcap F10 received 5 out of 5 stars! Let us add that American experts also stated that among all business-class cars this car is the safest.

Additional equipment is a projector. It allows you to display important information directly on the windshield (!). The driver can study it without taking his eyes off the road. All-round visibility also ensures car safety. This system has been adopted by other automakers. It is found on brands such as the Nissan Patrol and Infiniti QX56, allowing the driver to see the car from above on the display. Therefore, all obstacles, from people to potholes near the car, can be immediately seen. Agree, this is a useful function, especially when the car starts moving.

Engine

The BMW F10 has different technical specifications. Let's review the engines.

Cars with a variety of gasoline power units are supplied to the market.

The base model is the rear-wheel drive 520i. The car is equipped with a two-liter turbo engine with a power of 184 “horses” and direct fuel injection. This allows the base “five” to accelerate to “hundreds” in 7.9 seconds, have a speed limit of 235 km/h and consume 6.8 liters in mixed mode. fuel per 100 km.

The BMW F10 523i has the same turbo engine, but with 2.5 204 hp. Therefore, there are some differences in characteristics. Acceleration to 100 in the 523i modification is slightly faster (7.8 seconds), the top speed is slightly higher (238 km/h), and fuel consumption is higher (7.6 liters). Let's move on to all-wheel drive vehicles. The BMW F10 528i xDrive is equipped with a 3.0 engine developing 258 hp. Therefore, the acceleration time is reduced to 6.6 seconds, the maximum speed increases to 250 km/h. The fuel consumption of the BMW 528 F10 engine increases to 7.8 liters.

The 535i and 550i xDrive models feature biturbo engines. The volume of the power unit of the first/second model is 3/4.4 liters, power – 306/407 “horses”. The speed limit of the modifications is 250 km/h, acceleration is 6/5 seconds, fuel consumption of BMW F10 is 8.5/10.4 l.

Diesel engines are also varied.

Here the “base” is the 520d sedan with a two-liter engine with a capacity of 184 “horses”. Acceleration of the BMW F10 2.0 diesel takes 8.1 seconds. speed limit – 227 km/h. Average fuel “appetite” is 4.9 liters. More productive similar installations are available on the 525d and 530d models. Volume 3.0, power – 204/245 hp. Acceleration time is reduced to 7.2/6.3 seconds, the speed limit is increased to 236/250 km/h, and “eating” diesel fuel is reduced to 7.2/6.3 liters.

The 535d model has more powerful equipment. The top variant is the all-wheel drive M550d. The BMW F10 has the best engine - a three-liter engine with 381 hp. reaches a speed ceiling of 250 km/h. The first three-digit number appears on the speedometer after 4.7 seconds. Diesel fuel consumption - 6.4 l.

Until mid-2012, the vehicles were equipped with 8 units (4+4). After restyling, their number increased. The engines are combined with a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission.

And some information about what kind of oil to pour into the engine. It is recommended to use synthetic products from the following manufacturers (the numbers indicate the viscosity of the product):

  • Castrol - 0W40;
  • MOTUL - 5W40;
  • Mobil ESP - 5w30.

The originals are BMW 0W30/40. The oil volume depends on the modification of the car and ranges from 5-8.5 liters. It is recommended to change the oil filter every 15 thousand km during normal operation. Among other characteristics of the BMW 5 F10, it is worth mentioning the suspension. The car is offered with a front double wishbone suspension and a rear five-link suspension. Both designs are independent.

The architecture of the “five” is borrowed from the “seven”. It is shortened, and the load distribution along the axes is ideal, 50:50.

Equipment

The basic equipment of the BMW 5 F10 is:

  • 8 airbags;
  • Climate control for 2 zones;
  • Audio system;
  • iDrive system;
  • Servotronic steering;
  • Bi-xenon headlights;
  • Heated/power front seats;
  • ABS systems, ESP and other "tricks".

The body design of the car may be different. Buyers are offered 3 package options: Shadowline, Modern Line, M.

The difference between restyling and pre-styling

In the spring of 2013, the characteristics of the cars were updated. BMW 5 VI F10 F11 F07 has undergone restyling. There have been changes to the exterior. New bumpers with a radiator grille appeared, wheel rims received a new design, and the optics were adjusted.

Restyling also affected the BMW interior, new power plants appeared, and the list of equipment installed on cars expanded. Let's take a closer look at what differences the BMW F10 has after restyling.

Taking a quick look at the updated models, it may seem that the changes are minimal. However, a careful analysis will reveal many updates. Xenon optics appeared in the front part. LED headlights are an option. The bumper is equipped with aerodynamic elements, giving the car an aggressive appearance. Separately, it is worth noting the BMW F10 performance body kit. It will make the car's exterior as expressive as possible. Please note that you do not need to select the details to change your appearance yourself. The finished kit, matching the BMW style, is developed specifically for the German car. It includes spoilers, bumpers, side sills, and other spectacular elements.

German engineers managed to reduce the Cx coefficient. For restyled models, aerodynamic drag has decreased to 0.25-0.32. The indicator depends on the specific modification. The stern was also given a sporty twist. The laconic rear part is equipped with a powerful bumper.

The most powerful model received R19/20 tires with low-profile tires. A new, two-liter 143-horsepower diesel unit has appeared, consuming 4.7 liters per 100 km in mixed mode. diesel fuel.

Restyling increased the body color range to 16 colors, and in 2014 metallic was added to the list. You can order colors by choosing the Individual package. Also, since 2014, the Black panels mentioned above and engines with a displacement of 3.5 appeared in the “base”.

The following year, NBT navigation began to be replaced with an updated version, the BMW NBT EVO F10. It makes it possible to more accurately indicate traffic routes and all kinds of traffic jams, and allows you to more comfortably adjust the multimedia system. The main difference is the presence of Interface Design 5. After the update, this device synchronizes the systems and interacts with the driver through microphones/ports, using monitors/iDrive controller.

The system's RAM and processor power have been increased. Therefore, the time to access cards has been significantly reduced. Now scaling maps and displaying the optimal size on the display takes a couple of seconds. Since 2015, all BMW cars have been equipped with this system.

Restyling did not change the dimensions of the “five”.

The BMW F10 is one of those cars that many people consider to be standards. Because most of the less famous manufacturers would do well to follow this model. This car is a representative of the fifth series of BMW. It was published in 2010. It took the concern four years to create the project for this machine and bring it to life. So, what can surprise us with this car?

External review of BMW F10

To the delight of most fans of the brand, BMW refused the services of Chris Bangle, who drew the previous fifth series, a car that had excellent characteristics, but had a very controversial design. Designer Jacek Frohlich and the company’s chief designer, Adrian Van Hooydonk, had a hand in creating the look for the new “five.” Pay attention to the rear lights, don't you think they resemble the BMW E34? The “seven” base makes itself felt, the car has significantly increased in size: the length has increased by 58mm, the width by 14mm, and the height has decreased by 18mm. “Smart” headlights automatically switch from high beam to low beam when oncoming traffic appears. For the sake of good weight distribution, the engine is moved behind the front axle, and the front overhang is very short - this gives it a resemblance to the third series.

The drag coefficient F10 is 0.28, low air resistance has a positive effect on dynamic performance, as well as efficiency indicators. The hood, front fenders and even the front doors are made of aluminum. The aluminum hood provides a softer “contact” with the pedestrian, and of course aluminum body panels are lighter than metal ones. Today, the BMW 5-series f10 is available in sedan and station wagon body styles. Depending on the installed engine, the Bavarian car is shod with tires measuring 225/55 R17, or 245/45 R18. The BMW 550 is fitted with wider and lower profile tires. It is expected that in July 2013 the assembly of modernized BMWs with modified headlights and bumpers will begin.

Equipment and configuration

Let's consider another interesting topic concerning the BMW F10, the photo of which is provided above. So, you should start with the iDrive system, which is included in the basic package. Thanks to it, you can change any settings - be it the radio or the chassis.

As an option, adjustable lateral support equipped with an electric drive is installed on the front seats. The so-called “extension” of doors may also be offered. The BMW F10, the photo of which shows a presentable and expensive car, boasts dual-zone climate control. Although, if the buyer wants, he can be noticed with a four-zone one. There is also a night vision system that projects the image onto the central display (its diagonal is ten inches). Thanks to the test drive, it was possible to find out that the system is able to recognize a pedestrian even at a distance of 300 meters (in complete darkness).

Technical part and characteristics of the BMW F10

The BMW 5-series F10 is offered with six different engines: diesel and four petrol. two of the petrol units are turbocharged. The least powerful is the BMW 523i with a 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 204 hp and 270 Nm of torque. Such a car reaches a hundred kilometers in 8.5 seconds. For comparison, the new Subaru BRZ sports coupe reaches a hundred in 7.5 seconds. The next most powerful is the BMW 528i with a 3.0-liter engine with a power of 258 hp and a thrust of 310 Newtons.

This car accelerates to hundreds in 6.7 seconds. The turbocharged 535i has a volume of 3.0, not 3.5 liters, power - 300 hp and thrust of 400 Nm, all thrust is available from 1,200 rpm. The most powerful BMW 550i “hides” under the hood a V8 4.4k supercharged with 407 hp and 600N.M, after the expected restyling, in the summer of 2013 the power of the 550i will increase to 445hp and torque to 650N.M. Diesel modifications are 525d and 530d, the volume of power plants of both modifications is the same - 2.9 liters, but the 525d produces 204 hp, and the 530d produces 245 hp.

For the “fives,” an eight-speed automatic transmission and a six-speed manual are offered. The BMW 550i differs from other modifications in having larger diameter brake discs; discs with a diameter of 374 mm are installed on its front axle, and discs with a diameter of 345 mm are installed on the rear axle. Depending on the power plant, the main gear is also installed; the 550i has the longest gearbox and has a gear ratio of 2.813:1.

Standard equipment includes a brake energy regeneration system. The body rigidity of the F10 has been improved by 55% compared to the E60. The Adaptive Drive suspension continuously measures longitudinal and lateral acceleration, wheel steering angle and speed. The suspension independently adapts to the road situation. The BMW base already includes ABS, EBV and Brake Assist.

Let's pay attention to the technical characteristics of the BMW 5-series F10 528i.

The price for a BMW 528i starts at $58,000, and you can become the owner of a BMW 550i for $100,000.

To summarize, we can say that BMW has brought to the market a very high-quality car that no longer bears the burden of a design created by Chris Bangle, and this increases its chances of commercial success.

General impression

Of course, this car deserves praise. And it was mentioned more than once in reviews and test drives. If we take Russia as an example, where, in fact, this car has become very popular, then it is worth turning to the most significant opinion. The most famous and authoritative test driver Eric Davidovich (who is also the founder of the largest car club in the Russian Federation and the CIS) said that this car (both for a BMW) is good both technically and in terms of design. However, the specialist also said that if we compare the Bavarian car with the new Audi RS6 model (the manufacturers also took an already produced car as a basis and made a new one), then there are no special breakthroughs in BMW. But, perhaps, this is the only negative thing that could be noted.

In November 2009, a new body was introduced for BMW fifth series models. The developers - specialists from a Bavarian company - designated it as F10 (for sedans) and F11 (Touring station wagon). Production of cars on this platform began in 2010 and continues to this day.

The appearance of the new BMW body was developed by a team of designers led by Adrian van Hooydonk. If we compare with the previous model of the automaker from Bavaria (BMW E60), it is necessary to note the more traditional features of the BMW style, the design in the best classical traditions of this world-famous company: a long raised hood, short overhangs, a smooth roof line, a radiator grille slightly inclined forward - the famous BMW "nostrils", a powerful sports rear and elegant lines of the side panels. The salon meets the main concept of the company – “driving pleasure”. Let's add - and in the cabin. Spaciousness, high-quality and stylish finishes, a reasonable combination of colors and materials, restraint and the absence of unnecessary elements - this is how you can characterize the design of the F10 interior. It is also worth considering that it has become longer and wider than its predecessor, and this gives additional comfort to passengers.

As for the engines, the new development has at least seven of them: six-cylinder petrol and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel. The main one is a 4.4-liter inflatable V8 with a power of 407 horsepower and a torque of 600 Nm. (engine N63 BMW 550i). Six-cylinder petrol engines are represented by modifications N52N (on the BMW 523i and BMW 528i), N53 in two versions of different power (BMW 523i and 528i) and N55 (BMW 535i). The range of eight-cylinder diesel engines consists of the N47 (BMW 520d) and N57 with 245 hp. and 230hp (BMW 525d, 530d, 535d).

The BMW F10 suspension repeats that already tested on the seventh series. Minor changes in the design are determined by changes in the size of the wheelbase. The front suspension is double-wishbone, the rear is a proprietary multi-link. I would really like to note the shortcomings inherent in the new development of BMW specialists. But... apparently we won’t succeed. Everyone who test drove F10 models notes only positive aspects. And no matter how they talk about the BMW F10 cars - “enlarged three” or “reduced seven” - they remain BMW “fives” with all the inherent advantages of the 5 Series, which were appreciated by more than 5.5 million car enthusiasts around the world.

Technical characteristics of the BMW 5 series / BMW 5 series

  • The history of the BMW 5 Series dates back to 1972, when the first five rolled off the assembly line in the E12 body. Even then, the company's engineers paid special attention to the technical characteristics of the car and tried to introduce the most advanced developments in the automotive industry of that time.
  • In 1981, the second generation of the five in the E28 body was released, the car became larger, the front and rear optics changed, and injection engines appeared.
  • Sales of the third generation E34 started in 1988. In the 90s, in Russia, it was the most gangster car, they tried to bypass its owners and not enter into conflict with them, at that time many deciphered the abbreviation BMW as the Thief's Combat Vehicle.
  • In 1995, the fourth generation of the popular sedan was released, in the E39 body, the wheelbase was increased, the body rigidity was increased, and from that time on the car's suspension was made of aluminum. In 2004, the fifth generation was released in the E60 body, many criticize this car for its unusual design, uncharacteristic of previous models. But we can say with confidence that the E60 has made a big leap forward in terms of technology, overtaking its competitors from Mercedes and Audi.
  • In 2010, the sixth generation of the popular model in the F10 body was released, the designers decided to return to the roots of the BMW style, the five was made in the same stylistic solution as the BMW 3 Series in the E90 body.
  • In the spring of 2017, the seventh generation BMW 5 Series in the G30 / G30 body goes on sale. The car embodies all the most advanced developments and technologies used in the BMW 7 Series. Externally, the car is very similar to the flagship BMW 7 series.

In the fall of 1995, the fourth generation of the popular German BMW 5 sedan in the E39 body was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The wheelbase of the car was increased, the front and rear overhangs of the body were significantly reduced, and aluminum suspension elements were introduced. The use of aluminum can significantly reduce the unsprung mass, which has a very good effect on handling and smoothness. Plus, the rear suspension was self-steering. In 1999, restyling was carried out; external changes affected the front and rear optics, bumpers. All engines were replaced with new ones that meet EURO 4 requirements. All engines have a VANOS camshaft control system, which allows increasing torque at low engine speeds.

In 2003, the 5th generation BMW 5 Series in the E60 body went on sale in car dealerships around the world. Davide Arcangeli worked on the design, the appearance of the car turned out to be very unusual, slanting headlights rising onto the wings, rounded body shapes. Unlike previous generations, the E60 was ten years ahead of its time; BMW had not previously allowed such a revolutionary approach to design, which caused a barrage of criticism against the E60. But despite this, it became the best-selling model in the line and sold almost 1.4 million copies.

Technical characteristics of the BMW 5 Series in the back of the F10 2010-2017

In 2010, the sixth generation of the BMW 5 series in the F10 body was released. Compared to its predecessor, the car has grown in size, the wheelbase has increased, this happened largely because the platform from the BMW 7 series F01 was taken as a basis. Thanks to this, it became possible to introduce the latest technical solutions used in the BMW 7 Series. The design is made in the traditional BMW style, where strict forms predominate.

Technical characteristics of the BMW 5 Series in the back of the G30 2017

Progress does not stand still; at the beginning of 2017, BMW is releasing a new five in the G30 body. The car is built on a completely new Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform, which made it possible to increase the wheelbase, reduce weight, as well as introduce a lot of innovations and significantly expand the possibilities for using various electronic systems. In particular, this made it possible to combine an integral control system with an all-wheel drive system, which was previously not possible.

Briefly about the model

Before delving into the technical characteristics, design and other nuances, I would like to briefly talk about the model itself. Well, it replaced the previous famous car, known as the BMW 5-series E60. The new product was built on the modern 7-series F01 platform. It is interesting that the “five”, like the “seven”, is assembled at the same plant.

It is also noteworthy that when developing this model, the Bavarian concern decided to abandon the services provided by Chris Bangle. After all, it was he who “drew” the entire fifth series. Undoubtedly, the car had excellent technical characteristics, but not all BMW fans were pleased with the appearance. But Jacek Frohlich worked on the appearance of the new product together with Adrian Van Hooydonk. So this time the design of the car turned out to be very successful.

The rear lights of the BMW F10 are somewhat similar to those found on Plus, the base of the Seven has made itself felt, since the car has become much larger. Its length has increased by 58 millimeters. The width has increased slightly - only 1.4 centimeters. But the height has decreased by 1.8 cm. The model also boasts “smart” headlights that automatically switch to low beam from high beam if oncoming traffic is approaching.

To achieve good weight distribution, it was decided to move the power unit to the front axle. By the way, the front overhang is quite short, which gives the impression that the BMW F10 is very reminiscent of a third series car.

Manufacturers have also achieved low air resistance. Thanks to this, the dynamics have become significantly better. And efficiency has increased, which is good news. The hood, like the front doors with wings, is made of aluminum. Due to this, it was possible to reduce the weight of the car, which also had a positive effect on the dynamics. Depending on the power unit, it is also determined which tires the car will be “shod” with. This can be either 225/55 R17 or 245/45 R18.

Equipment and configuration

Let's consider another interesting topic regarding the F10, the photo of which is provided above. So, you should start with the iDrive system, which is included in the basic package. Thanks to it, you can change any settings - be it the radio or the chassis.

As an option, adjustable lateral support equipped with an electric drive is installed on the front seats. The so-called “tightening” of doors may also be offered. Another photo of which shows a presentable and expensive car boasts dual-zone climate control.

Driver amenities

In addition to the above, the BMW F10, whose characteristics are quite impressive, can please its owner with a convenient and ergonomic console. It is made in the manner of more “adult” cars. Its development specialists decided to turn towards the driver. And the rotation angle was seven degrees.

They also did a good job on passenger safety. Test drives, as well as EuroNcap and NHTSA tests, have proven this fact. Moreover, American researchers and critics made a statement in which they asserted that the “five” is the safest business class car.

As additional equipment, the experts decided to add a projector, thanks to which important information for the driver is displayed on the windshield. Also, the BMW F10 receives positive reviews mainly because this car has one important feature - an all-round visibility system. This is an analogue of the one installed on the Nissan Patrol, as well as on the Infiniti QX56. Thanks to this system, the driver can see his car from above - just look at the display. This way he will be able to notice all the obstacles near the car (and these are people, curbs, holes, etc.). A very useful and convenient feature.

Specifications

Perhaps one of the most important topics regarding cars. The BMW F10 is offered to potential buyers with 6 different power units. There are both petrol and diesel versions.

The “weakest” model is considered to be the BMW 523i, under the hood of which there is an inline 6-cylinder 2.5-liter unit that develops a power of 204 horsepower. This car accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds. Next in terms of power is the 528i. Its engine has a volume of three liters. This unit produces 258 hp. With. This car accelerates to “hundreds” in 6.7 seconds. But the turbocharged version, known as the 535i, has a three-liter volume and a power of 300 horsepower. And finally, the most powerful version is the 550i. Under its hood is an 8-cylinder 407-horsepower unit.

But there are also two diesel models - with a 2.9-liter engine (there is an option with 204 and 245 hp). By the way, potential buyers are offered an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 6-speed manual transmission.

Now let's look at the cost. F10", the price of which was quite high at the time of release, will now cost a potential buyer a lot. And all because of the crisis. Even if you take a used car made in 2014 (naturally, in almost new condition), it will cost 3,700,000 rubles. in fact, this car is worth that kind of money. It is worth noting 449 hp, 4WD drive, automatic transmission and, of course, a full package of equipment. If you want to become the owner of a luxurious, comfortable and powerful car, then you should choose this models.
