Ford was founded in 1903 by Henry Ford, who created it after receiving $28,000 from five investors to develop the business. The Ford company gained fame as the first in the world to use the classic automobile assembly line. The first model produced by the company to gain widespread recognition was the Ford Model T, produced in 1908-1926.

About the car

The Ford Mustang is a Pony Car segment vehicle produced by Ford Motor Company.
The first version (1964/65 - 1973) was created on the basis of the Ford Falcon family sedan. The first production Mustang rolled off the assembly line on March 9, 1964 as a 1965 model (among collectors, the unofficial designation “1964 1/2 model” is used for Mustangs produced before the fall of 1964). On April 17, the car was presented to the public in New York, and on April 19, it was shown on all three American television networks. The promotion of the car was accompanied by an active advertising campaign. It was one of the most successful premieres in the history of the automotive industry. More than a million Mustangs were sold in the first 18 months.

The first prototype of the car under the motto Mustang (1962) was a two-seat mid-engine roadster in the spirit of European sports cars of those years with an extremely unusual, futuristic design.

However, there was little interest in the concept from the public, and the conceptually similar two-seater (more precisely, simulating two-seater due to the removable plastic fairing over the rear seat) Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster did not become a bestseller; But the sporty versions of the compact Ford Falcon, like the Falcon Sprint, turned out to be very attractive to consumers, combining the capacity of a family sedan with a brighter appearance and slightly improved dynamics.

1964-1973

Ford Mustang Convertible 1964

The first Mustang left the assembly line on the morning of March 9, 1964, and by the end of that year, 263,434 cars had been sold. In mid-1965, a fastback model was introduced, aimed at the rival Plymouth Barracuda and looking more harmonious than the base coupe. The car with a convertible body was also very attractive in appearance.

The stylistic “key” of the successful luxury coupe Continental Mark II of the mid-fifties was used as the basis for the design, with its characteristic proportions with a long hood and short trunk and plastic sidewalls with a break in the rear wheel arch area. However, in comparison with it, the appearance of the Mustang was less strict and more dynamic.

The design was considered very successful for its time, although unconventional for America - there were even opinions that in this regard, the Mustang, with its clean lines of a relatively compact body and a moderate amount of chrome in the trim, was closer to European, and not to mass American models of those years with their characteristic excessive size and excessive enthusiasm for shiny ornaments.

From a technical point of view, the car was not a revelation.
The base engine was a well-known six-cylinder power unit from the Ford Falcon in the USA, bored to 170 cubic inches (~2.8 liters), it was equipped with a three-stage manual or two- and three-stage CVTs.

The front suspension was generally borrowed from the same Falken, and was structurally a variant of the usual parallelogram suspension on two wishbones - in this case, the shock absorber in a block with a spring was moved out of the space between the arms and placed above the upper arm. This suspension (in America it is called “double-wishbone”) was slightly more compact than a conventional parallelogram, in particular, freeing up space for large V8 engines. An anti-roll bar was offered as an option.

The rear suspension was dependent, with longitudinal semi-elliptic springs and a rigid drive axle beam.

The base brakes were drum brakes on all wheels; a vacuum booster was offered as an option. The picture was completed by a worm steering mechanism with circulating balls from Falken with a large gear ratio (power steering in those years was a relatively unpopular option in this class).

As a result, although the car’s handling and driving performance were better than those of the base model, the Falken, due to a lower center of gravity and modified chassis settings, but not by much.

Ford Mustang 1965

In 1965, the standard Mustang interior added separate power-adjustable driver and passenger seats, an AM radio, and a floor-mounted shift lever. Also available as options were sun visors, a manual remote mirror control, a floor console and a front bench seat. Also one of the interior options was the “Rally-Pac”: a clock and tachometer mounted on the steering column.

In April 1965, buyers were offered the GT package, which included a tuned suspension, sharper steering, front disc brakes, dual exhaust system and special body paint.

Ford Shelby GT350 1966

A particularly powerful modification from the famous studio of racer Carol Shelby - the Shelby GT350 - was produced in a fastback body, equipped with a 289 V8 engine, boosted to 306 hp. and was sold in salons to anyone who wanted it.

Ford Mustang 1966

In 1966, the base Mustang began to be equipped with a 120-horsepower inline-six engine with a displacement of 200 cubic inches (3.2 liters). Three 289 V8 engines were available as options, with power ranging from 200 to 271 hp. The Shelby GT350 version was now available in four colors, with an automatic transmission and a Paxton mechanical supercharger, which allowed the power to be increased to 420-430 hp when the engine reached a certain speed. Also in 1966, the Mustang was one of the first to receive a mono AM/FM car radio, and sun visors became standard equipment.

When sales of the Ford Mustang began in Germany, it was discovered that this name had already been registered. A German company offered to sell the rights for $10,000. Ford refused and removed the "Mustang" badge, calling it the "T-5" for the German market.

1967-1968

Ford Mustang 1967

By the 1967 model year, the Mustang gained length and height, and most body panels underwent a transformation accordingly. The front end began to look more “aggressive”, the fastback was changed, in which the rear window and trunk lid were now located on the same line.

Ford Mustang 427 Drag 1967

The Ford Mustang GT 390, remembered by many from the feature film Bullitt, was created to compete equally with the Chevrolet Camaro SS 396. The market demanded powerful cars, and Carol Shelby could not help but respond and introduced the Shelby GT500 - an even more powerful modification of the Mustang. Under the hood of the new product was a 7000 cc V8 developing 335 hp. In 1968, the Mustang received a simpler grille and 427 engines producing 390 hp, which performed well on the street. In the same year, on April 1, Ford announced its one of the most famous engines - the 428 Cobra Jet, with larger valve plates and a Ram Air air intake system, which, with a stated power of 550 hp. easily developed all 610. From the same year, modifications of the GT350 and GT500 began to be called Shelby Cobra, and a convertible body became available. At the same time, modest six-cylinder models continued to be produced, offering a striking sporty appearance and image for reasonable money.

Three-point seat belts were introduced for the first time in 1968. The "Rally-Pac" package was no longer offered as the new instrument panel already had a tachometer and clock.

1969-1970

Ford Mustang Boss 429 1969

By the 1969 model year, the Ford Mustang underwent repeated modernization, increasingly moving away from the original concept: with the same wheelbase, the length of the car increased by 3.8 inches (~10 cm), weight - by 140 pounds (~70 kg), and in the model line new versions appeared - the cheap E, the luxurious Grande and the sports BOSS and Mach 1. The Ford Mustang in 1969 became the first model to use a four-headlight headlight design; the headlights were placed inside and outside the radiator grille.

The BOSS 302 was built to compete with the Camaro Z/28 in Trans AM racing. Version with 429 V8 with 375 hp. intended for NASCAR and equipped with Ram Air-induction and special exhaust manifolds. Under the hood of the Mach 1 there was a 351 V8, and as an option it was possible to order a limited-slip rear axle differential and even a 428 Cobra Jet engine. Versions of the Shelby Cobra were available in fastback and convertible body styles and became increasingly luxurious, equipped with a 428 Cobra Jet V8 engine producing 335 hp.

Ford Mustang Boss 302 1970

For the 1970 model year, Ford took a wait-and-see approach and left the Mustang virtually untouched, changing only the front end and making a few other minor updates. This was the last year for the Shelby Cobra modifications, which remained virtually untouched from last year, unlike the base Mustang.

1971-1973

In addition to the Shelby Cobra, the BOSS 302 and BOSS 429 modifications also disappeared. The Mach 1 modification, equipped with the famous 351 Cleveland V8 engine with 285 hp. and was still available. The new BOSS 351 was introduced and was faster in the 1/4 mile than the 429 Super Cobra Jet Ram Air.

Ford Mustang Convertible 1973

Following the powerful versions, the decline of the Mustang itself came in 1973 - engine power ratings were again lowered, and it turned out that the base engine produced 95 hp, and the most powerful 351 cc V8 produced only 156 hp.

1974-1978

Ford Mustang 1974

This was already the 2nd generation of the legendary muscle car. Ford was revising the concept of the American Pony Car in the face of the gasoline crisis and changing consumer tastes. But, the car was much closer to the original 1964 concept than later first-generation models.

The car was small by American standards, even smaller than the original 1964 model, and had in its basic configuration an in-line four-cylinder engine bored out to 2.3 liters, developing a “shameful” for America 86 hp. The choice of power unit was determined by considerations of fuel economy. A 2.8-liter V6 Cologne engine and, since 1975, a small, by American standards, V8 with 140 l/s at 4.9 liters were available as options.

During the first four years of production, about 400,000 cars were sold each year.

1979-1993

Ford Mustang Cobra 1979

In 1979, the Mustang was based on the larger "Fox" platform (it was originally developed for the 1978 Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr). The interior has been restyled to accommodate four people more comfortably, despite the narrowed rear seat. Body styles included coupe, sedan, hatchback and convertible, and were classified by trim level into L, GL, GLX, LX, GT, GT Turbo (1983-84), SVO (1984-86), Cobra (1979-81, 1993 ), and Cobra R (1993).

Catering to the European fashion for small and low-power engines, Ford had to leave the big sport, but in September 1980 everything changed dramatically, even creating a special department SVO (from Special Vehicles Operations - literally, the Department of Special Transport Operations). Their “brainchildren” are special models of Mustangs for participation in the most prestigious and most exciting race - Trans-Am. The price of a racing car started at $25,000, while a standard car could be purchased for $6,000.

The third generation of the Mustang combined two different body styles. From 1979 to 1986, the car had a triangular front end and four headlights, referred to by enthusiasts as the "4-Eyes". Then, from 1987 to 1993, the “shapes” became more round, in the “Aero” style. In addition, in 1986, Ford introduced an EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) engine modification instead of a carburetor. There were three units under the hood to choose from: an in-line “four” and V-shaped six and eight cylinder versions. The four-cylinder modification, by the way, came with a turbocharger, which showed a pretty good result in road tests - acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 11.5 seconds, with a power of 88 hp. For comparison, the largest unit at that time, the 302nd block, allowed it to accelerate to 100 km/h in 8 seconds.

In response to falling sales and rising fuel prices, an all-new Mustang was developed in the early 1980s. It was to be a front wheel drive small block car based on the Mazda MX-6. But thanks to the objections of concerned people, Ford management did not change the traditions of the American muscle car, and the “Japanese Mustang” was not destined to see the “big world”. As a result, Ford Motor is making another facelift for the Mustang, and a creative version on the MX-6 platform was used in 1989 on the Ford Probe.

1994-2004

Ford Mustang GT Convertible 1994

In 1994, the Mustang underwent its first major redesign in its fifteen years. Codenamed SN-95, an updated rear-wheel drive version of the Fox-4 is being released. Patrick Schiavone's new styling borrows some of the styling cues from previous Mustangs. For the first time since 1974, a coupe (fastback) model was not available. Innovations include an anti-lock brake system and a 230-watt “Mach 460” music amplifier with a standard CD deck.

The base model had a V6 232 block (3.8 l) with a capacity of 145 hp (108 kW) in 1994, and starting in 1995 the same modest six-cylinder, but more productive 150 hp (110 kW) , and remained on the assembly line until 1998. The choice of gearbox was also not very wide, with only a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic available. There was a long-awaited surprise for lovers of big engines: on the Mustang GT and Cobra modifications, after almost thirty years of use (successful, I think), Ford is replacing the V8 302 block (4.1 l) with a new, smaller, but more productive V8 281 -m (4.6 L) SOHC. This small-block was originally rated at 215 hp (160 kW), but by 1998 it had been increased to 225 hp (168 kW), and thanks to the engineers of SVT (a reorganized SVO, now an acronym for Special Vehicles Team), they managed to “overclock” it to 305 hp (227 kW)!

Ford Mustang SVT Cobra 1999

For 1999, the Mustang received a new design with sharper contours and larger wheel arches, but its basic proportions, interior design, and chassis remained the same as the previous model. The standard 3.8 L V6 was rated at 190 hp (140 kW) and was available until 2004, while the Mustang GT with its 4.6 liter 8-cyl and 260 hp (190 kW) debuted During this period, it gained a steady pace of production. The most powerful of the factory modifications is the Cobra, its engine was rated at 316 hp (235 kW) at 6000 rpm, the transmission was a five-speed manual Tremec™ T45, which easily allowed it to accelerate in first gear to 72 km/h.

In honor of the 35th anniversary, Ford released the anniversary Limited Edition GT 1999, which was decorated with 17-inch alloy wheels, special side skirts, a sports spoiler, an aggressive air intake, chrome body parts and a silver leather interior. The car was offered in four colors: silver, black, red and bright white.

Original road test of the 4.6L Mustang SVT Cobra:
Drag racing 1/4 mile in 13.8 sec at 164 km/h;
Acceleration 0-100 km/h = 5.6 s;
Maximum speed = 240 km/h;

Original road test of the 4.6L Mustang GT:
Drag racing 1/4 mile in 14 seconds at 160 km/h;

There are also three alternative modifications offered in this generation: in 2001 Bullitt (modification included a black "running horse" emblem on the hood, fog lights, lowered suspension and no rear wing), in 2003 and 2004 Mach 1 (modification included unique alloy wheels , body applications, flat spoiler, open grille and functional hood scoop), power up to 390 hp (290 kW) and the legendary Cobra (the most powerful “civilian” modification).

2005-2013

Ford Mustang S-197 2005

At the 2004 North American International Auto Show, Ford unveiled a completely redesigned Mustang, codenamed "S-197", which was based on an all-new D2C platform. Developed under the direction of Chief Engineer Hau Thai-Tang and designer Sid Ramnarace, the fifth-generation Mustang's appearance is reminiscent of the fastback Mustangs of the late 1960s. Ford's senior vice president of the project, J Mays, called this style "retro futurism"

The base model is equipped with a Ford 4.0-liter V6 engine with SOHC gas distribution system, which replaced the 3.8-liter version used since 2004. The new engine produces 210 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 325 Newton-meters of torque at 3,500 rpm. This engine comes mated to a standard Tremec T-5 five-speed manual transmission. An automatic five-speed gearbox “5R55S” is optionally installed. The GT version of the Mustang features a 4.6 L SOHC Modular 3-valve V8 with variable injection controlled by VCT and produces 300 hp (224 kW). The 2005 version has an approximate weight-to-power ratio of 11.5 pounds per horsepower. Although the Mustang GT comes with the same automatic transmission as the V6 model, the optional Tremec 3650 5-speed manual transmission allows you to make better use of the GT's extra power.

Ford Shelby GT 500 2007

In 2006, the updated Shelby GT500 was released, available in convertible and coupe body styles. The Shelby GT500 differs from ordinary Mustangs in its specific appearance and color, as well as the presence of a number of elements of a sporty ambiance, while remaining a comfortable and well-equipped car with sports seats made of genuine leather.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500KR

And in the same year, 2006, the world premiere! Ford and Shelby are building a powerful sports car, the Ford Shelby GT500KR, with a 5.4-liter, 540-horsepower engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. There is an air intake on the hood for additional cooling. There is also a lower spoiler at the front with an air intake to cool the brake system. One thing is upsetting: the Ford Shelby GT500KR was released in a small batch, only 1000 cars. This is the embodiment of American ideas about what a muscle car should be in a modern guise.
In addition to standard modifications, Ford could not bypass the tradition of special, limited editions, which include:

DUB Edition

Ford has announced a new version of the Mustang sports model that should allow it to connect with an "entirely new" generation of buyers. This car was prepared with the direct participation of the Roush tuning studio and the editors of DUB magazine. The Dub edition model is equipped with a 3.7-liter V6 unit producing 305 horsepower (224 kW) and is available in both coupe and convertible body styles. The kit includes 20-inch TIS alloy wheels, Pirelli sports tires and a body kit from Roush.

Parnelli Jones Limited Edition

In 2007, the Parnelli Jones Limited Edition was first shown at the New York Auto Show. The color scheme is faithful to the golden era of Trans-Am racing. Engine power from official sources is 370 l/s (272 kW).

X-1 Edition

By special order of the US Air Force, a special version of the combat show car was prepared, codenamed X-1, equipped with a 4.6 liter 500 horsepower (368 kW) engine. There is only one place inside, located in the center. The instrument panel consists of three LCD displays surrounded by a variety of toggle switches and buttons. The displays broadcast images from night vision cameras installed on the body. The X-1 does not have a steering wheel in the usual sense; instead, a joystick steering wheel is installed on the central tunnel.

In 2010, the model is undergoing a slight restalling; the body has become more aerodynamic. The base engine remained unchanged, but for the GT version the 4.6 liter V8 was revised, and began to produce 319 hp (235 kW) at 6000 rpm of the engine, when the maximum torque of 441 Nm was achieved at a lower load - 4255 rpm .

In 2011, the electric power steering is again replaced by a more reliable hydraulic one. There is a choice of either a 6-speed manual transmission MT82 or a 6-speed automatic 6R80. The updated aluminum 227 block (3.7 liters) weighs 18 kilograms less than last year. The 24-valve V6 now has a performance of 309 hp (227 kW) with a torque of 380 Nm and is equipped with a new dual exhaust.

The GT modification is equipped with a 32-valve 302 block (5.0 l) 412 hp net power and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The Shelby GT500 has a 5.4 liter engine with a power of 550 hp (410 kW) and 690 Nm of torque.

In 2012, for the Boss 302 modification, the engine produced 450 hp (331 kW) with a torque of 520 Nm.

2013 Ford Mustang GT

In 2013, the Mustang is being refined again, the design becoming more aggressive from year to year. The most powerful Shelby GT500 package is complemented by a new 5.8 liter V8 unit with a supercharger, producing 671 hp. (494kW). Both Shelby and Boss are available exclusively with manual transmission. 20-inch aluminum wheels and LED lights are now standard, rather than an option as before.

2014 - our time

The sixth generation of the pony car was introduced by Ford on December 5, 2013, and mass production began at the Ford Flat Rock Assembly plant on July 14, 2014. What distinguishes the updated Mustang from previous models is primarily a fully independent rear suspension for all modifications, as well as an additional four-cylinder 2.3-liter engine.

The most powerful Big Block, with a volume of 5.0 liters / 420 hp, a torque of 528 Nm, formed the basis for the most productive Mustang - the GT version. The standard engine is a V6 with 300 hp. A small four-cylinder 2.3 liter EcoBoost is presented for the European market, which, together with two turbines and a direct fuel injection system, has quite “adult” characteristics - 305 hp, torque 432 Nm, top speed 234 km/h and acceleration to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

Already installed in the basic configuration is the BLIS® traffic control system, which scans other road users and other obstacles at 360 degrees, a contactless ignition system with touch sensors on the doors, SYNC® - a media center with a touch screen that supports voice control, as well as an electronic system ETCS traction control.

Review of the updated Ford Mustang 2017-2019: appearance, interior, technical specifications, equipment, muscle car parameters, security systems and price. At the end of the article there is a photo and video review of the updated Ford Mustang 2019.

Review content:

If we talk about powerful cars, especially legendary ones, the American muscle cars Dodge Challenger, Chevy Camaro and, of course, the legendary Ford Mustang immediately come to mind. The latest muscle car can very often be found in both old and new films; we will talk about the new restyled version of the Ford Mustang 2017-2019 in the article.

The car dates back to 1964, when on May 9 the first production model rolled off the assembly line. Over the course of its existence, the manufacturer has produced a huge number of different variations and trim levels of the famous Ford Mustang, from coupes to convertibles and loaded muscle cars. One main and constant feature of the Ford Mustang was that the car was produced only in a two-door form factor, and a sedan option was simply not considered necessary.

Minor modifications to the exterior and interior of the legendary Ford Mustang were not considered a new generation, in principle, as they are now. Over the course of time, there have been six generations of muscle cars, the most famous being the first, second and fifth. The sixth generation is now on sale and has received only one restyling, but as for the third and fourth generations, they are less popular due to their not very successful design and technical nuances. Cars of these generations were of the same type, with minimal modifications.

The biggest breakthrough in design occurred in the fifth generation of the Ford Mustang (from 2004 to 2014 inclusive), some sources say that the fifth generation lasted until 2015, since several submodels were released two years before that. The sixth generation was quickly modernized, adding an “evil look” and strict body features, as well as updating the interior of the new Ford Mustang.

Exterior of the new Ford Mustang 2017-2019

There is no point in talking about exactly what details distinguish the fifth Ford Mustang from the sixth, since they are completely different, just as each submodel of a muscle car (or rather, sub-equipment) is noticeably different. Most of the differences are in appearance, since the interior is the same in many versions, with the exception of certain decoration details.

According to the body form factor of the new restyling Ford Mustang 2017-2019, the manufacturer offers coupe and convertible, with the coupe accounting for the lion's share of different trim levels. Among the most famous coupes are the Fasback, GT and Shelby trim levels. The changes in the sixth generation are clearly visible, most of all in the adaptive front optics. Depending on the configuration, the optics will be halogen or LED; the outer part is reserved for direction indicators and light lenses, but the inner part, closer to the radiator grille, is highlighted with three inclined LED daytime running lights. It is this part that most distinguishes the new 2017-2019 Ford Mustang from other cars. For the Ford Mustang Shelby GT trim, the outer edges of the optics will be folded up instead of down.

Changes also affected the radiator grille of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang muscle car; it was made as formidable as the front optics. The grille insert is often black mesh, but an optional chrome stack with chrome surround is available. To give a new “evil” style to the grille, two stripes were added from top to bottom, at a slight slope. As an addition to the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang grille, the manufacturer offers to install additional LED running lights that replicate the main ones in optics. The central part of the grille, depending on the configuration of the Ford Mustang 2017-2019, will be decorated with the branded emblem of the model in the form of a horse, or in the side part there will be an emblem in the form of a cobra (usually for the Shelby, GT trim levels).

The front bumper of the new 2017-2019 Ford Mustang muscle car is a completely different matter. If in the previous generation it changed with each trim level, now it will only be different in the Shelby trim level. The center of a regular 2017-2019 Ford Mustang bumper is allocated for an additional radiator grille, with characteristic slopes. Triangular aerodynamic vents with flat LED fog lights have been added to the sides. As for the Ford Mustang Shelby configuration, the lower grille will be smaller. More open rectangular openings appeared on the sides, with LED foglights. The shape of the foglights is shorter in length, but equally oblong.

The hood of the new Ford Mustang 2018 muscle car will change similarly to the bumper. As a rule, the standard option is a raised central part and slightly raised parts from the optics to the pillars. Due to this “mane”, the new Ford Mustang 2017-2019 looks much more intimidating than the 5th generation; in some cases, gills will be added for better engine ventilation. Despite such bends, the hood, as before, fits flush with the radiator grille and side fenders. The windshield, as standard, is heated in the area where the windshield wipers are located; optionally, or richer configurations will receive a fully heated windshield around the perimeter.

The side of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang muscle car received significantly fewer changes. The front and rear wheel arches stand out above the main part, and on the side there are two curved lines between the wheel arches, one at the level of the door handle, the second at the bottom of the doors. Depending on the configuration of the Ford Mustang 2017-2019, the lower part of the doors can be simple, decorated with a plastic molding, or have a plastic body kit in the form of a step.

As in the previous configuration, the new Ford Mustang 2017-2019 has a two-door design, with only two side windows on each side. The car doors are now frameless and do not depend on whether you have a coupe or a convertible. Engineers took into account and improved the errors of the previous generation, thereby improving noise insulation and raising the level of safety by an order of magnitude. To distinguish between the trim levels or the limited version of the muscle car, a nameplate or inscription may appear on the front fender.

The side rear view mirrors of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang deserve special attention. Although the designers have reduced their size and now they look rougher and stricter, the inspection of the situation behind has not become worse. The standard set of mirrors includes electric adjustment, heating and automatic folding. Optionally, they offer to add memory for several settings options and projection lighting on the roadway in the form of a car emblem.

The body coloring of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang is bright, as it should be for a muscle car:

  • orange;
  • bright red;
  • black;
  • grey;
  • blue;
  • burgundy;
  • yellow;
  • silver;
  • white;
  • Navy blue;
  • dark green;
  • cherry.
The main advantage of the body color of the new Ford Mustang 2017-2019 is the absence of any restrictions. In addition to the standard set of shades, the buyer is offered to choose a color to suit his taste; it is also possible to paint the lid and body in different shades. As for the decorations, for the GT and Shelby trim levels it is proposed to apply lines, patterns and other distinguishing marks to the body. One of the most non-standard color options is painting; for a fee, the new Ford Mustang 2017-2019 can be made completely individual upon special order; the price of such pleasure will depend on the complexity of the painting and is set individually for each order.

At the rear, the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang muscle car received minimal changes. Conventional feet were replaced with LED ones, with well-defined sectors. Between the feet, as standard, there is a black plastic jumper with the emblem of the equipment (Mustang or Cobra), and a rear view camera is also located on the plate. The trunk lid of the 2018 Ford Mustang remains the same small, although many owners have asked for a slight increase in the size of the lid. More noticeable changes were made to the rear bumper of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang; the lower part is decorated with a black diffuser with highlighted aerodynamic lines.

A reverse traffic indicator is located in the center, and on the sides of the diffuser are complemented by two chrome exhaust tips and two elongated LED fog lights. Decorating the rear of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang, you can choose a spoiler (for an additional fee or included with the car), rear window trim and many other chrome little things. As for the roof of the new Ford Mustang 2017-2019, it will be of two options: hard (for a regular coupe) and soft (for a convertible). Despite the expensive status of the car, the manufacturer does not provide a sunroof or anything similar. As a rule, the roof of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang is solid with stiffening ribs; the rear part of the roof is decorated with an antenna in the form of a small hump, but not a shark fin.

The appearance of the new sixth generation Ford Mustang 2017-2019 has become more strict and angry. In comparison with the fifth generation, the designers introduced modern technologies into the new product, thereby keeping pace with the trends of automakers, while, as before, retaining the recognizable features of the legendary Ford Mustang muscle car.

Interior of the new Ford Mustang 2017-2019

The interior of the new Ford Mustang 2017-2019 has not received as noticeable changes as the appearance. It would be better to say that these are decorative inserts, modified control parts and more modern systems. As before, the top of the panel on the passenger side is decorated with a small protrusion and a chrome model inscription on it. The central part of the panel of the Ford Mustang 2017-2019 has remained almost unchanged, the very top is reserved for three round air ducts, and below the panel there is an 8" touch display of the SYNC multimedia system. In most cases, the system works based on Apple CarPlay, allows you to synchronize your smartphone and display all the necessary information to the central display.

Below the display there is a whole set of functions for controlling the functions of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang. It is this part of the panel that will change depending on the selected vehicle configuration. According to the standard, the audio system panel is located from top to bottom, then the dual-zone climate control panel and the control panel for the main safety systems of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang, and here is the engine Start/Stop button. The central panel is completed with a small set of chargers from a USB port, a 12V outlet and wireless charging. Initially, the interior is not intended for smoking, so you will need to additionally buy a smoker package in the form of an ashtray-glass and a cigarette lighter.

The central tunnel of the Ford Mustang 2017-2019 is made in a more classic form. It will not stand out with any special features; the main parts include a gear lever, a mechanical handbrake, two cup holders and a small armrest with a middle compartment inside. As they say simply but reliably, this is exactly what the manufacturer positions about the set of tunnel and control systems for the 2019 Ford Mustang.

This is not to say that everything is done quite simply; optionally they offer to install the necessary control systems, add decorations and various inserts. According to the classic scenario, the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang coupe and convertible have two rows of seats. The manufacturer indicates that the cabin of the new product can accommodate 5 passengers, but in fact only 4, including the driver. There will be very little space for a third rear passenger, and the central tunnel is also very intrusive.

The front seats of the new Ford Mustang 2017-2019 are made in the style of American muscle cars. Sporty style, good lateral support and various adjustment options. Both the driver and front passenger seats can be folded down to accommodate second-row passengers. The second row of seats in the 2018 Ford Mustang, more commonly referred to as a sofa due to its limited seating capacity, offers the most a center armrest in the seatback. The side body linings for the second row of seats of the Ford Mustang 2017-2019 will be covered with soft fabric, this is done for comfort and minimizing the impact in the event of an accident. This arrangement of the main interior parts of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang is standard for both the coupe and convertible; similarly, there will be a minimum of differences in decorative details and additional buttons.

Still, there are advantages in finishing the interior of the Ford Mustang 2017-2019, starting from the basic configuration, only high-quality leather was used as the material for the interior trim. Also, for an additional fee, the seats and individual parts of the muscle car’s interior can be decorated with Alcantara inserts. The interior colors of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang are divided into standard and optional. Standard interior colors for the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang include:
  1. black;
  2. beige;
  3. brown;
  4. burgundy;
  5. dark blue with blue stitching;
  6. black with red stitching.
It is worth considering that such a standard color does not mean covering the entire interior of the Ford Mustang 2019, but only the central parts of the seats and headrests, while the remaining parts will be trimmed in black leather. Optional custom interior trim for the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang does not limit the buyer, but the price will accordingly be an order of magnitude higher. In this case, the manufacturer suggests upholstering the interior in light leather with decorative inserts of Alcantara or Nappa leather; the panel decoration is made of carbon fiber or polished aluminum.

One of the most significant improvements to the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang interior is the muscle car's instrument panel. In the basic configuration, it is classic, combining dial gauges and a color display, but more expensive configurations will have a large 12" color display. You can customize such a display absolutely the way the car owner wants it, there are hard-wired standard settings, and it is also possible change individual details. At a minimum, you can change the location of the devices, the backlight color and brightness.

Not so noticeable changes were made to the steering wheel of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang. As before, it is designed for three spokes, but after restyling, the designers directed the spokes upward. Only high-quality leather is used as upholstery material, starting with the basic version of the Ford Mustang 2017-2019. The decoration of the muscle car's steering wheel includes updated aluminum inserts on the spokes and the model emblem in the center of the steering wheel. The side spokes, as before, are reserved for functional control buttons, although a couple more buttons have appeared near the bottom spoke. They are responsible for managing mobile communications and a pair of active security systems.

Depending on the selected transmission (manual or automatic), paddle shifters may be installed behind the steering wheel of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang (automatic transmission only). Similarly, there will be differences in the functionality of the levers behind the steering wheel; the steering wheel itself can be adjusted in height and depth. From the interior decoration of the Ford Mustang 2017-2019, one can also note the LED lighting of the elements and the interior as a whole.

The conclusion about the interior of the updated Ford Mustang 2017-2019 is positive. Despite the angry exterior, the interior is softer in style; the designers combined new technologies while maintaining the recognizable features of a muscle car. In addition to standard interior decorations, the manufacturer offers a huge number of additional options, ranging from cladding to individual elements around the perimeter.

Technical characteristics of the new Ford Mustang 2017-2019

The characteristics of the Ford Mustang 2017-2019 are exactly the thing for which this muscle car is so valued among other cars of the company. Depending on the country of delivery and configuration, the list of engines changes, so there is always something to choose from. As expected for cars of this class, the engines are only gasoline. From economical, average power to the most charged ones with a good reserve of power under the hood. The engine is paired with a manual or automatic transmission. The manufacturer distinguishes two main types of engine, these are EcoBoost L4 and TIVCT V8.

There are also more powerful units for limited versions of the Ford Mustang 2017-2019, an example of which is the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R. This model uses a Ti-VCT V8 with a volume of 5.2 liters and a power of 526 horses. The engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.

As you can see, the characteristics of the new Ford Mustang 2017-2019 are quite good, although many say that the car is gluttonous, but in fact it is more economical than large SUVs. The suspension of such a muscle car is completely independent, and the main setting was to resist body vibrations. Due to this setting, the body always remains in a horizontal position in the event of sudden acceleration or braking.

For comfortable driving of the Ford Mustang 2017-2019, the driver is offered a suspension setting mode, electric power steering, as well as an improved braking system with 6 pistons in the front, Brembo brand and 4 pistons in the rear EcoBoost. At the owner's request, the brakes can be entirely from Brembo. Otherwise, the 2018 Ford Mustang is playful and still holds the position of a charged American car.

Safety and comfort Ford Mustang 2017-2019

Much of the safety of the new 2017-2019 Ford Mustang was based on technical characteristics; by improving them and refining the body, the manufacturer increased the level of safety to a new level. You shouldn’t expect a ton of active safety systems on board the new 2017-2019 Ford Mustang, since this is primarily a sports car rather than a premium or family car. The main list of systems includes:
  • front airbags;
  • airbag in the driver's knee area;
  • active seat belts;
  • side curtain airbags (Fastback only);
  • central locking;
  • standard alarm system with autonomous power supply;
  • electronic steering wheel lock in case of theft;
  • ABS, ESC;
  • downhill start assistant;
  • emergency braking;
  • tire pressure monitoring;
  • electronic brake force distribution;
  • ISOFIX child seat mounts;
  • key with personal settings;
  • Rear View Camera;
  • all-round viewing system;
  • parking sensors;
  • light and rain sensors;
  • blind spot monitoring.
According to the manufacturer of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang, this is the minimum safety list. Comfort features include active cruise control, a 9-speaker audio system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated and cooled front seats, a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat, including 2-way lumbar adjustment. They promise that the new Ford Mustang 2017-2019 will be replenished with active safety systems. But they have not yet specified which systems will be installed on board the car.

Options and price Ford Mustang 2017-2019

There is no standard quantity for the new Ford Mustang 2019, as variations will vary depending on the country of delivery and the needs of the buyer. Still, there are 9 main configurations. The 2017-2019 Ford Mustang configurations differ minimally from each other, but in terms of technical data they are completely different, as well as in functionality.

As standard, all trim levels of the 2017-2019 Ford Mustang muscle car are equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission; an optional 10-speed automatic transmission can be installed. The exception to the rule will be the Shelby GT350 and GT350R; for these models, only a 6-speed manual, regular or reinforced TREMEC, is available.

There will definitely be a reason for a buyer to choose a Ford Mustang 2017-2019, the main nuance is the amount you are willing to pay for such pleasure. As the manufacturer indicates, the maximum configuration will be a two-seater (Shelby GT350R), depending on the technical features and body structure. The legend has received updates, but at the same time remains desirable among many fans of American muscle cars.

In this article, we offer a brief history of the legendary brand, through which you can trace all Ford Mustang models from 1962 to the present.

1960s

In the early 60s, global automakers were faced with the question of what to offer the post-war baby boom generation. For this purpose, Ford decided to create a special model of a personal car based on the Ford Falcon. A competition was announced within the company, in which the winner was the project that laid down the canons of the future “pony style”: sharply defined sides, a long hood and a shortened rear end.

The first Mustang was the Mustang I concept model, introduced in 1962. The two-seater sports car was named after the legendary World War II era stormtrooper P51 Mustang. The second generation of Mustangs was shown to the public at the New York Auto Show in 1964. The car was equipped with a 170 in³ 6-cylinder engine, three-speed transmission, closed wheel covers, original instrument panel, bucket seats and carpeted interior.

The first production version of the Mustangs was the Wimbledon convertible, whose sales exceeded all expectations. Already 12 months after its release, almost 420 thousand copies of this car were sold. By the end of the 60s, “pony cars” were almost universally recognized as the highest achievement of automotive design.

1970s

With the advent of the 70s, Ford stopped producing original Mustang models based on the Falcon platform. But during this period, the largest versions of the Ford Mustang appeared, created on the basis of the GT350/GT500 and Boss 302/429. They were almost 600 pounds heavier and 1 foot longer than the first models. The Ford Mustang Mach 1 was also presented to consumers with an impressive range of power plants, the most impressive of which was the 429 Super Cobra Jet (SCJ) with a power of 370 hp.

In the mid-70s, Ford introduced the second generation of Mustangs with a completely new design and a line of Cobra II engines. The car was equipped with a non-functional air intake on the hood, front and rear spoilers. In versions with a V8 engine, American engineers installed a 4-speed manual transmission.

1980s

During this period, tightening environmental restrictions forced many manufacturers to reduce engine power. The Ford company was no exception with the Mustang model - the 4-cylinder was removed from the line, the car received a new aerodynamic body. The convertible body, which was produced in the 60s, also returned to the assembly line.

1990s

This time became an era of design and technical progress for the Ford Mustang. In honor of its 30th anniversary, the car was significantly modernized and its already excellent performance characteristics were improved. 1330 of the vehicle's 1850 components were replaced. The fastback body was no longer produced, leaving only a convertible and a 2-door coupe. For the first time, a driver's airbag was included as standard. All cars in the basic version were equipped with an improved 4-cylinder engine.

The fourth generation of the legendary pony car received sharply defined lines, a new hood and grille, stylish wheel arch trims, updated headlights and fascias. At the same time, the manufacturer launched a small batch of the exclusive SVT Mustang Cobra model with improved performance and original style. In 1993, a limited number of racing versions of the Cobra R sold out before production began.

2000s to present day

In the new millennium, the Ford Mustang remained virtually alone on the market. Pontiac Firebird's closest competitors are essentially not developing and are not pleasing consumers with updates. At this time, Ford is producing the 300 millionth Mustang and celebrating the 40th anniversary of the popular model.

Although Mustang production at the famed Dearborn plant ceased in the 2000s, models assembled at other plants were put on the market. First of all, it should be noted the Mustang Shelby GT model, an exclusive version of the Shelby GT500 with a 500 hp turbocharged power plant, a limited edition Mustang Bullitt.

In 2013, the sixth generation Ford Mustang was presented in convertible and coupe bodies. In April 2014, the legendary model celebrated its 50th anniversary. During this time, more than 9 million copies of the car were sold. Half a century has passed, but the Mustangs have retained the easily recognizable elements of the classic design and their character, for which they are idolized by numerous fans around the world.

The Ford Mustang is an American classic pony car produced by Ford Motors Company. The prototype of the brand is the Ford Falcon Sprint. Launched in 1963 as a two-seat concept car, it went into production the following year with minor design changes under the unofficial name "1964½". The car was so well advertised that within eighteen months of its release over a million units were sold. The entire Ford Mustang lineup.

The Mustang created a car that was uncharacteristic of American cars of that time - restraint in size and chrome trim. The car introduced the fashion in America for “pony-class” cars - stylized as a sports car, with a powerful but serial engine and a coupe-shaped body with long hoods and short rear ends. The Ford Mustang inspired many American and even foreign manufacturers to release similar models.

Background

Full-scale production of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was launched five months after the first versions went on sale. And, although the company officially names the release date as 1965, in fact the first cars began to be produced starting in March 1964.

Mustangs became larger and heavier with each model year, but early in the next decade Ford brought the car back to its original size. The 1974 concept has since seen several generations of the platform and design. Although some other pony cars have gone through many iterations, the Mustang has retained its distinctive look throughout five decades of development and production.

First generation (1964-1973)

To reduce development costs for the Mustang, it was largely composed of components, many of which were already in production for other Ford models. This use of common components reduced assembly and repair training time for workers, while allowing dealers to accept the Mustang (1967 Ford Mustang) without forcing them to spend huge amounts of money on replacement parts to service the car.

However, over the next nine years of production, the designers made a lot of changes to the appearance and design of the car. The result was a much larger and more luxurious car, but this often did not bring with it any increase in power or handling.

The Mustang gradually evolved from a fast and powerful car into a large and heavy luxury design. As a result, the press wrote: “Mustang has grown fat and lazy.” Sales began to fall, buyers began to give preference to competitors' cars.

Second generation (1974-1978)

The new model, called the Mustang II, was released two months before the first (1973) oil crisis. Its reduced size allowed it to compete successfully with imported cars. The car turned out to be even slightly smaller than the first generation car, but became less playful.

Third generation (until 1993)

The third generation Mustang had two body styles. For the first seven years of production, the car was somewhat angular. Later, from 1987 to 1993, the front end was made more aerodynamic. In addition, from the second half of the 80s, engines with injectors came to replace carburetor engines.

Fourth generation (until 2004)

In the fall of 1993, the Mustang underwent its first major redesign in fifteen years. It was based on an updated version of the platform called Fox-4. The silhouette of the new car includes some motifs from earlier Mustangs. In its sixth year of production, the Mustang's contours became sharper and its wheel arches grew larger, but it remained easily recognizable in both design and construction.

During production, the car was equipped with more and more powerful and improved engines, starting from 154 hp. With. on the first cars and ending with 390 hp. With. inclusive.

Fifth generation (until 2014)

Ford first introduced the redesigned 2005 Mustang in 2004. The car is designed on the original D2C platform. The car, depending on the configuration, was equipped with various power units up to 304 hp. With. power.

The first generation Ford Mustang was first shown at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964 and made a great impression on spectators. The initial version of the car with a 2.8-liter engine (102 hp) accelerated only to 150 km/h. But the list of options included V8 engines with a power of up to 380 hp, an automatic transmission and a lot of other equipment. The first Ford Mustang was offered in three body styles: coupe, fastback and convertible. Over the years of production, it has lengthened from 4613 to 4923 mm.

The production of the first models continued until 1973. In total, almost three million first-generation cars saw the light of day. The "base" version was priced at $2,368 (roughly $18,500 these days).

2nd generation, 1973–1978

The second Ford Mustang, shortened to 4445 mm, developed on the basis of the compact one, was released in 1973. The cars were equipped with a 2.3 liter four (89 hp), a 2.8 V6 (106 hp) or a 4.9 liter V8 (131-141 hp). The car was offered in two versions: a two-door coupe or a three-door hatchback

Despite poor dynamics and poor handling, about 1.1 million cars were sold until 1978, with prices starting at $3,134.

3rd generation, 1978–1993

The third generation Ford Mustang lasted on the assembly line from 1978 to 1993. At this time, it was again lengthened to 4562 mm, and lighter materials were used for production. The previous engine range was supplemented by a 2.3-liter turbo-four (118 hp), and more powerful (up to 203 hp) engines with fuel injection began to appear under the hoods of Mustangs only in 1983.

The result of the restyling of the “third” Mustang in 1986 was the Mustang SVT, boosted to 238 hp. "eight" 4.9 liters. In just 15 years, 2.6 million third-generation cars were produced. The car was also sold on the American market under the name.

4th generation, 1993–2004

GM's plans to revive the model prompted Ford to develop the fourth generation Mustang in 1993. The new car was based on a strengthened old platform. The wheelbase increased slightly, the brakes became disc brakes in the “base”, and ABS was installed at an additional cost.

The “basic” version of the “fourth” Mustang was equipped with 3.8-liter V6 engines (147-193 hp), and the GT, Cobra and Mach I versions were equipped with 4.9 V8 engines (218-243 hp) and 4.6 liters (264-390 hp). From that time on, only models with coupe or convertible bodies began to go on sale. The starting price increased from $10,810 to $13,365 (about $22,000 today).

In 1998, during the restyling, the car's exterior was redesigned in the spirit of the New Edge design, sound insulation was improved, a traction control system appeared, and the top versions of the Cobra received an independent rear suspension. Production of the fourth generation Mustang ended in 2004, by which time approximately 1.6 million vehicles had been produced.

5th generation, 2004–2014

The first copy of the fifth generation Ford Mustang was released in 2004. The new cars had a simplified suspension and interior; the cars were based on their own D2C platform.
