The UAZ is in the garage, the only thing that stops it from working is the negative temperatures in the garage. At the same time, there are plans to install a wood stove in the garage, so as not to depend on electricity.

The weekend has arrived.

So what do we have? Auto and power steering kit.
We remove the steering wheel, the steering column switches, the old steering column, and disconnect the steering rod. We unscrew and knock down the steering bipod, unscrew and remove the steering gear.
Hurray, the place to install the new kit is ready.

It turns out that the sets are different. It flashed through my head: “Your car! Why do they make different steering gearboxes?” Upon further study of this topic, it was found that my kit No. 004–40 is for installation on a 409 engine.
I had to spend the weekend installing a new steering column and a new luxury gazelle steering wheel, connecting the steering column switches. I spent the remaining time reading the UAZbook website.

Well, this one doesn't fit - we'll look for another one. For some reason they were not available in the stores “Everything on UAZ” and “Planet Zhelyazyaka”.

I had to order 4x4uaz from the online store.

I picked up kit No. 004-20. Everything is in a box made of plywood. Upon inspection, the following was found:

Positive:
- there is a steering gear;
- there is a bipod for the steering gear;
- there is a cardan for installing a new type of steering column (a wedge is inserted on one side);
- there is a bracket for attaching the power steering pump to the engine;
- there is an adjusting L-shaped plate;
- there is a power steering pump;
- there is a power steering pump pulley;
- there is a tank with fasteners for the fender liner;
- all bolts and screws are present;
- there are fittings for connecting a high pressure hose;
- there are copper rings;
- there is a simpleton for the pump under the fan;
- there is a belt, a high pressure hose and a low pressure hose;
- there are normal hose clamps;
- there is a pulley for the second belt;
- there is a wedge for securing the cardan to the steering gearbox;

Negative:
- there is no mounting bracket for the power steering pump! (and without it there is no way to install the pump on the bracket securing it to the engine);
- no steering rod;
- with one copper ring the size was missed;
- the wedge for attaching the cardan to the steering gear does not fit (apparently they took it from the bicycle department).

On the agenda is the installation of a power steering kit 004-20 old model range, spring or spring suspension.

Taking into account the experience of the previous weekend, I tried to install the steering gear straight away. So, with a little wisdom, it was established that he was in his regular place. However, a small ambush was discovered at the initial stage, namely the small distance from the injection hose bolt to the engine gear cover.

Everything was once again postponed until next weekend.

Installation of power steering kit 004-20.

Step 1: Install the second pulley

We take a pulley to install the second belt.

We twist and turn and look. There is a peculiarity, no matter how it doesn’t get up right away, one of the holes is displaced. Therefore, we estimate the location or take a caliper and measure the distances.

Having figured out how to combine, we install and tighten the bolts (the original ones won’t fit, we need longer ones). The pulley is pressed onto the original crankshaft pulley.

Step 2. Installing the bracket on the engine.

The one sold in the store is not suitable!

Take the power steering pump mounting bracket from the kit.

and put it in place of the factory gasoline filter. Tighten the nuts.

So we have room left for the third fastening. But alas, there is no hole in the head with threads. We'll drill it ourselves. We mark the middle with a core. Remove the bracket. Remove the valve cover.

We plug the holes where chips can get in. We take a drill or screwdriver, a drill and drill a hole, cut the thread with a tap.
I have a technological boss in the cylinder head, on the inside, so the hole is not through.

Well, it's ready

We put the valve cover back and install the bracket through the washers to the cylinder head (so that the bracket does not press the valve cover).
We take the power steering pump, attach a pulley and bracket to it and attach it to the bracket that we screwed to the cylinder head. Don't forget to put an "L" shaped plate to adjust the belt tension.

We put on a belt.

We tighten it with the help of an “L” shaped plate.

Part 3. Steering gear (RR) and grinder-file.

Having read UAZbuki. I decided to sharpen the PP and the cap of the discharge hose fitting.

So, carefully holding the PP in a vice, I took a caliper and roughly outlined the intended area for removal. We will shoot from the side of the plane that is applied to the frame.

We take a grinder (small), sharpen it, and use a large file to level the areas. There is a lot of metal dust, so it is better to provide a respirator.

Here is a photo of the intermediate work, to show how much I ground off and put a file on top. It can be seen that about 2-4 mm have been ground off on the right. So we cut down the entire site.

Using improvised means, we also grind off the head at the fitting. I placed a bolt nearby for clarity; the head was the same thickness.

Step 4. Installing the PP on the frame.

We paint over the open areas with paint or something else. First, we attach the high-pressure hose (remember to put copper washers on the bolt, then the hose and the washer again, and only then into the body of the RR. Next, we install the RR from the bottom - from the radiator side and fasten it with bolts from the old RR.

Step 5. Installing the tank, hoses, bleeding the system.

So, we install the reservoir in a convenient place, taking into account that the hoses do not bend, and the upper oil level in it is higher than the power steering pump.

We connect the hoses, fill in the oil, and bleed it with the front wheels hanging up. We check for leaks.

If the oil in the tank foams when the engine is running, it means the system is leaking. Stop the engine, seal the hoses and bleed the system again.

The power steering itself is a part of the car and is powered by a pump. This also includes the steering column. The usual factory one does not fit here. There are many advantages of this system.

The first is the comfort of control, because you no longer need to turn the steering wheel as much as before. The second is reliability. The hydraulic booster practically does not fail. The third advantage is ease of maintenance. You will not have any difficulties when operating such a car. Even if the amplifier breaks, you can fix it with your own hands. Moreover, it is quite possible to get to the garage with such a breakdown. The only thing that will happen is that the ease of control will deteriorate. The steering wheel will become “heavy”. By the way, for the first time such an amplifier was installed on Gorky’s “Chaika”. GAZ-13 was the first car with power steering.

Disadvantages of modification

Among the disadvantages of installing power steering on a UAZ-469 with your own hands, it is worth noting the poor information content of the steering wheel at speeds of more than 60 kilometers per hour. If without a booster it becomes stiffer, then with power steering it turns just as easily as at 10 km/h.

What will we need to buy?

To do this, we need to purchase a power steering column, as well as a pump. The latter will create and maintain the necessary pressure in the control system. The operation of the element is carried out by a drive belt. We will also need a fluid storage tank and connecting hoses. The latter are divided into two types - low and high pressure. The first will drive “return” into the tank, and the second serves to circulate liquid in the system itself. As for the amount of liquid that is used in the system, it is not too much. For UAZ, 1.2 liters of special oil is enough. It differs from motor oil in viscosity and consistency.

How to install?

To do this you need to remove the steering wheel. Here you will need not just a set of keys, but a puller. You can't just remove the steering wheel. This puller looks like this:

It will be impossible to remove the wheel with bare hands - this will only damage the steering column. After removing the steering wheel, the column must also be removed. The nut securing the steering rod bipod is also removed. Next, unscrew the three nuts of the steering element. After this, a new set of bipods is installed on the column shaft with power steering. The latter must be connected to the steering rod and secured with cotter pins. When installing a new column “under the power steering,” the old mount will interfere with us. It is cut using a grinder. Next, install a plastic protective casing on the column. The screws for fastening are old ones. Next, a rubber ring, castle nut and washer are put on the casing. The penultimate one is secured with stepladders.

A small driveshaft is installed between the steering mechanism and the column, which will connect both elements and reliably transmit force. Drive a wedge into a wide hole (using a hammer, light blows). Two washers are mounted on the wedge thread - spring and regular. As a result, the length to the hinge should be 300 millimeters. Next, tighten the castle nut and mount the steering wheel. The power steering steering column (UAZ-469 - tuning object) has been successfully installed. But that is not all. We need to secure the remaining parts of the mechanism.

Installation of the pump and reservoir

Any hydraulic booster is driven by fluid pressure. To create it, there is a pump. But it works through a belt drive - from the crankshaft pulley. It is worth noting that there are different belts - for power steering on UAZ and for cars without it. We will need a longer element - for the hydraulic power steering. So, remove the drive belt, fan impeller and crankshaft pulley.

Next, unscrew the water pump. We attach the radiator impeller to the wheel hub. We will also need extended bolts “for the power steering” on the UAZ and a spacer (usually included in the kit). The belt is installed on a new one. The fuel filter bracket is also removed. The pump will be installed here. The bracket that comes with the power steering kit is mounted in place of the pump stud. Next, the pump is secured to the brackets. The bar and bracket are attached to the locknut. When installing the belt, it is necessary to set the correct tension. Adjusting the power steering (UAZ "Simbir" can also be upgraded) is carried out by tensioning a special roller. How to determine normal tension? The belt should not hang on the pulleys. If you press on it with your finger, it bends by 10-15 millimeters, while rotating at a right angle relative to the plane of the pulley. After we installed it on the UAZ, we install the fuel filter back. It is attached to a square hole. Next, we take a drill in our hands and drill several holes in the place of the left engine mudguard.

They are needed to secure the fluid reservoir. Here we will need bolts, nuts and a clamp. This element is connected to the pump using a polymer hose. The system operates on regular transmission oil. Once again we check that the parts are installed correctly and start the car.

Examination

With the engine warm and running, turn the steering wheel from side to side. In the first seconds, excess air should come out of the tank. If it starts to foam, it means the system is leaking and you need to look for a breakdown. After thoroughly sealing all the hoses, start the engine and check the operation of the amplifier again. The power steering installed on the UAZ “Bukhanka” from a foreign car must operate smoothly and silently. The belt does not whistle, there are no leaks of working fluid.

You will immediately feel the performance of this amplifier. The steering wheel turns much easier than before. During operation, regularly monitor the remaining liquid in the plastic tank. It needs to be topped up if necessary. Operating the hydraulic booster when the fluid level is insufficient can result in pump failure. The steering wheel will become much heavier.

Operational problems

Car owners often purchase ready-made amplifier kits from the Ulyanovsk plant. Their cost is relatively low, and they are not problematic to install. Ready-made kits can be purchased at prices ranging from 20 to 37 thousand rubles. But with frequent use, especially without the proper oil level, the amplifier begins to hum. This means that the pump or drive belt has been damaged. It is less likely to break on its own (it can leak at sealing points). It is not recommended to drive with such damage.

Power steering from BMW

The question of installing power steering (UAZ) from a foreign car, namely a BMW seventh series, is often raised. It would seem that these are two completely different cars. But the German power steering works quite adequately on the Ulyanovsk Kozlik. To do this, you will need a pump with 130 or more Bar and a flat pulley.

The latter can be turned by a turner to order. This is necessary for the alignment of the crankshaft pulley and the pump. Some install a two-stream element from the 24th Volga. The hoses for the tank fit without modifications. Otherwise, the installation is no different.
