Final sale of Haval H9. My dear Chinese friend: test drive of the updated Haval H9 Dimensions of the Great Wall Haval H9 of the new generation

Among the new Haval models of 2017-2018, the updated frame SUV Haval H9, which underwent a planned and very serious restyling, was presented in the Middle Kingdom in early May. In our review there are photos, prices, configurations and technical characteristics (including the new diesel engine) of the Haval N9 2017-2018, a Chinese premium SUV.

The body of the large Chinese SUV has changed minimally after restyling. The designers gave the appearance of the updated model more shine, rewarding the front part of the Haval H9 with a new false radiator grille with 5 crossbars framed by a chrome frame and a redesigned bumper with round fog lights and a stylish relief.

From the side, the updated and pre-reform versions can be easily distinguished by the running boards. In restyled versions of the SUV, the running boards are hidden under the body and only when the doors are opened are they pulled out from under the bottom using electric drives (previously, conventional static running boards were installed, which worsened the geometric characteristics of the body).

The rear part of the body has acquired a slightly more strict bumper.

There are many more new parts in the interior of the updated Haval H9 than on the body of the SUV. There is a stylish and modern instrument panel with a large color virtual trip computer screen, a completely new central tunnel with a convenient automatic transmission control knob, a large panoramic roof 705 mm wide and 1180 mm long with a sliding front section. The quality of finishing materials, according to the manufacturer, demonstrates the high premium level of the SUV. Natural and artificial leather, decorative inserts made of valuable wood, steel and aluminum are used.

Advanced equipment includes adaptive cruise control with automatic braking, an all-round visibility system, a parking assistant, and systems that monitor markings and objects in the blind spots of rear-view mirrors.
For more comfortable placement of passengers on the second row seats, the length of the cushions has been increased by 50 mm.

Specifications Haval H9 2017-2018. There are a lot of innovations in the technology of the Chinese 7-seater SUV.
Firstly, the 6 automatic transmission has been replaced by the latest 8-speed hydromechanical automatic transmission from ZF.
Secondly, the turbocharged four 2.0 Turbo has been modernized and now produces as much as 33 more power (251 hp 355 Nm) than the engine of the pre-reform car.
Thirdly, a turbo diesel engine has finally appeared under the hood of the large Chinese SUV - a 2.0-liter engine (190 hp 420 Nm).
Fourth, the independent suspension with double wishbones at the front and multi-link architecture at the rear has also been upgraded to provide an optimal balance in comfort and handling.

Haval H9 is a large premium SUV and the flagship of the Great Wall sub-brand model range. The premium nature of the car does not prevent it from remaining a classic SUV with a full arsenal of appropriate equipment and a frame structure. In the design and behavior of the car you can see features of the notorious Toyota Prado. However, this is not the first Chinese car that is almost a copy (reduced in price, of course) of a famous car.

The car's world premiere took place at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show. At home, the car went on sale at the beginning of 2015, and reached us by the summer of the same year. Let's get to know the “ambitious Chinese” better!

Exterior

It’s clear that the car has its own “face,” however, something about it reminds us of that very Toyota LC Prado. The Haval H9 is larger in size: 76 mm longer in the body, and 10 mm longer in the base; wider by 41 mm and higher by 55 mm.

The car looks very decent. If you remove all the logos from it, hardly anyone will guess that it is “Chinese”. The high-set, discreetly chromed body is endowed with the proportions of a truly respectable SUV. Due to the poor layout of the lights, the rear of the Haval H9 looks very controversial. Otherwise, it’s a real flagship: an impressive front end with bi-xenon headlights, a massive radiator grille, “muscular” wheel arches.

Hospitality

For the car to unlock the doors, it is enough to pull the driver's door handle with the key (which is very solid) in your pocket. Simultaneously with the doors unlocking, the LED sill illumination turns on and the electrically operated rear-view mirrors unfold. Surprising considering it's "Chinese". But that is not all. When you unlock the car, a red Haval sign appears on the asphalt in front of the door. It is generated by lasers located in the side mirror housing. This is rarely seen even in the premium car segment. The car's hospitality is enhanced by wide doorways, comfortable footrests and grippy handles on the door pillars.

Interior and equipment

Once behind the wheel, you can note the high seating position, excellent visibility and a good sense of size. All this, as well as the doorways with handles, is strongly reminiscent of the Japanese prototype. The Chinese Haval H9 is also not inferior in equipment. In our latitudes it will be presented in a single configuration, called Elite. It includes quite a solid set of options. So that a large car can be driven without problems in a cramped city, it is equipped with front and rear parking sensors, a rear camera with tips, as well as a function for tilting the right mirror when reverse gear is engaged. And that is not all. If the front windshield wipers are operating, the windshield wiper located on the tailgate is activated when reverse gear is engaged. The car has two barrels of windshield washer - separately for the windows and headlights.

Thanks to the driver fatigue monitoring system, the car will be an excellent assistant on long journeys. The backlight can change color from blue to red. The car has a push-button engine start and an electromechanical parking brake. The driver's seat is equipped with memory. An air ionizer is located in the lid of the central glove compartment. The second row is very comfortable: adjustable backrest tilt, heated separate sofa and a separate climate system unit. The third row is quite comfortable, as for the third row of a premium car.

In the interior, you can see the features of Infinity, Mercedes and, of course, Toyota Prado cars. But all this variety looks quite attractive. The interior is very pleasant to the touch. The plastic on the instrument panel and doors is of very high quality, and the doors are also sewn into soft leather.

There is practically nothing to complain about in the seven-seater cabin: good design, comfortable fit, excellent fit of parts, high-quality finishing, and finally, perfect operation of all the knobs and buttons. Usually the “Chinese” ones faded in comparison to their prototypes, but the Haval H9, the photo of which erases all the clichés about the Chinese automobile industry that have formed in the heads of car enthusiasts, is frankly pleasing.

Weak sides

And yet, if you look closely, you can find the very features that distinguish the car from its famous prototype. The steering wheel reach adjustment range is too short for many. Whenever the driver makes any movement while wearing a seat belt, the belt buckle rubs against the leather of the seat, creating an unpleasant grinding sound. When you restart the engine, the music starts automatically.

The on-board computer display has excellent graphics, but the impression is spoiled by incorrectly translated phrases. For example, with the words “The gentle descent is ready,” the electronics informs the driver that the descent assistant has turned on. And the phrase “Kilometers in the void” tells the driver about the power reserve. And these are not all the “philosophical” sayings that electronics can please. The navigation system is also not far off - it barely distorts every street. The Chinese promise that these shortcomings will soon be eliminated.

To turn on the heated front seats, you must first press the corresponding button on the instrument panel, and then select the heating mode in the menu that appears on the touch screen. By the way, the display of the multimedia system itself shows a quite solid image, but due to the strong forward tilt in the sun, it is almost impossible to see its picture. The same applies to the climate control buttons. The sun visors are too small, and when the driver turns his head to the side, they do not always cope with their task.

Specifications

The Haval H9 SUV is equipped with a 2-liter gasoline turbo engine capable of developing 218 horsepower and 324 Nm of torque. A solid engine, but the Haval is no fluff either. The curb weight of the car is 2.3 tons. To accelerate this “pile of metal” to a speed of 100 km/h, the motor needs 12.4 s. The maximum speed of the car is 180 km/h. Overall, the engine performs quite well. In the city and on the highway, you can feel like you are far from being the slowest participant in the flow. There is enough traction for a confident start, overtaking and tight driving without forcing the engine. However, lovers of active driving will still have to “turn” the engine. The sport mode also comes in handy here, as it sharpens the accelerator pedal response and quickens the 6-speed automatic transmission. In normal mode, the gearbox is configured for comfort and economy. By switching the box to manual mode, you can change speeds yourself using the steering wheel paddles. The “Chinese”’s appetite is quite comparable to its status: 16-17 liters per 100 km in mixed mode, with a quiet ride.

Range of engines

A gasoline turbo engine is the first, but not the only power unit that the Haval H9 will be equipped with in the future. In the future, it should be increased to 245 horsepower and adjusted to an 8-speed automatic transmission. In 2017, the Chinese plan to create a 2-liter diesel unit with a capacity of 190 hp. With. In addition, 3-liter engines are also being developed: a gasoline engine with a capacity of 297 hp. With. and diesel with a capacity of 281 hp. With.

Noise insulation

What the creators of the “Chinese rogue” have succeeded in is noise insulation. The cabin is so quiet that it seems as if the car was wrapped in a thick blanket. The engine is barely audible even at high speeds; it does not remind of itself and does not resonate with the body. In cruising mode, you can completely forget about it. The body is also silent, and the only thing that spoils the impression a little is the sound of the massive tires.

The Chinese covered everything they could with a layer of soundproofing material. In the voids of the body you can find thick pieces of sound insulation. The same thing occurs on the back side of decorative panels and all kinds of covers.

On road

On the road, the car behaves as it should for a frame SUV with a high center of gravity and a continuous rear axle. It holds the “straight line” quite stably, and microsteering is only sometimes necessary. As for the information content of the steering wheel, it deserves an average rating. On sharp turns and during sharp lane changes, the feeling of predictable stability is slightly disrupted - the car rolls, especially if there are uneven road surfaces along the curve. There are no questions about the effectiveness of the braking system. When you press the brake pedal sharply, the hazard warning lights automatically turn on. It seems that this function is becoming a family trait among the “Chinese”, just remember “Cherry Tiggo 5”.

Despite the fact that the Haval H9 does not have adjustable shock absorber stiffness and rear air suspension, it copes well with our specific roads. The shaking of the car can only be felt in large potholes. And when the “Chinese” brazenly overtakes cars and crossovers on a rough road, it looks even more confident than the Toyota LC Prado. “Japanese” is definitely perceived as tougher on such a surface.

Off-road

This is where Toyota is clearly superior to its Chinese counterpart. It has permanent all-wheel drive with a limited-slip differential. The driver of a Japanese SUV can block the center or rear cross-axle differential. In addition, the gear ratio of the low transfer case in the Prado is higher than that of the Haval H9: 2.57 and 2.48, respectively. The list of off-road options for the Toyota LC Prado includes cruise control (off-road), disabling anti-roll bars, several electronic modes, and rear air suspension adjustment.

Haval H9 is equipped with simpler equipment. The front axle will be connected automatically, through an American transfer case with a multi-plate clutch, which constantly plays with traction. If you release the gas pedal on a descent or when coasting, the car becomes rear-wheel drive. When the driver presses the gas again, the clutch acts depending on the quality of the road and the selected electronic mode. There are five modes in total: “Sport”, “Mud”, “Sand”, “Snow” and automatic mode. You can select them only on a higher range of gearboxes. At a lower stage of the transfer case, the center clutch is not blocked 100% and lives its own life.

At the same time, the geometry of the body of the Haval H9, the characteristics of which we are discussing today, is quite conducive to off-road driving. There is enough traction, and the stabilization system simulates inter-wheel locks quite acceptable. The “burning” smell that appears after a long off-road ride indicates that the clutch is heating up. If you drive with fanaticism, most likely one day it will overheat. If you start on a slippery, sloping surface, the stern is pulled to the side. This happens due to the fact that the main amount of traction at start falls on the rear axle, and it arrives at the front axle with a delay. Off-road, by the way, the responsiveness of the accelerator pedal leaves much to be desired.

The approach angle of the SUV is 28, and the departure and ramp angle is 23 degrees. For the notorious Prado, these indicators are a little more interesting: 32.25 and 22 degrees, respectively. The minimum ground clearance of the Haval H9 model is 206 mm. The depth of the passable ford, according to the manufacturer, is 500 mm. Like the Prado model, the “Chinese” engine is raised as high as possible, there are no protruding parts. The aluminum transfer case and fuel tank are covered with thick protection.

Prospects

Even despite the rich equipment compared to classmates, which, however, is typical for Chinese cars, it will not be easy for the Haval brand in our market. Many people here know about Great Wall, but only a few know about Haval. Assembly at the Tula plant, which is still under construction, will reduce the price of the SUV and make it accessible to a wider audience. In the meantime, the Haval H9 car, the equipment of which is presented in one (quite rich) version, will cost the buyer 35 thousand dollars. The price is quite justified, but not everyone will risk paying that kind of money for a “Chinese” that has not yet managed to make itself known on the market. At the same time, the Great Wall mining company was in the same position at the dawn of its popularity. So the Haval brand has everything ahead.

Competitors

The first opponent of the “Japanese” in the market of the former CIS countries will be the Korean car SsangYong Rexton. Don't forget about the Kia Mohave with its powerful engines. And, if you believe the “dry” indicators, then in terms of price and equipment, the “Chinese” Haval H9, the test drive of which we are considering today, can even compete with the Toyota LC Prado in the “Standard” version. Although the last thesis is very difficult to understand.

The car is just beginning to conquer our market, so it’s too early to evaluate its reliability; comfort and controllability are another matter. As reviews show, this car is chosen by those who do not want to overpay for the popularity of the Toyota Prado. The strengths, as you might guess, are the design and equipment, and the weaknesses are the lack of choice of equipment and the rather weak engine of the Haval H9. Reviews show that in terms of maintenance, at least at first, the machine is cheaper than its prototype. Let's see how things will be in the future.

Conclusion

The Haval H9 test showed that this car is capable of causing that very feeling called pattern breaking. Only the emblem indicates that the car belongs to the Chinese automobile industry. And considering that not every car enthusiast is familiar with it, the car makes knowledgeable people turn around and peer questioningly. The car demonstrates a completely new stage in the development of Great Wall. This can be seen in literally everything: driving performance, assembly, equipment, comfort, and unexpected attention to detail. As a result, no one doubts that the Haval H9 belongs to the premium segment. Owner reviews confirm this.

The Chinese company GreatWall presented to motorists a seven-seat all-wheel drive SUV Haval H9 2015-2016, which has a solid appearance and good technical characteristics.

Exterior Great Wall Haval H9 2015-2016

Externally SUV Hawal H9 2015-2016 looks prestigious and attractive. The massive chrome grille and narrow cut of the headlights emphasize the aggressive look, demonstrating that it belongs to powerful cars. The elegantly designed bumper houses the fog lights. Metal running boards, conveniently located along the doors, once again emphasize that the HavalH9 is a full-fledged SUV, and not a crossover.

Behind HavalH9 2015 (2016) looks no less decent than from the front. The taillights are located vertically along the C-pillars and fit harmoniously into the design of the SUV. On the rear door there is a neat box for a spare wheel, which increases the volume of the trunk, while giving the SUV an attractive appearance.

Interior Haval N9 2015-2016 from Great Wall

Technical characteristics of Haval H9 2015-2016

Today, the SUV is equipped with two types of engines: a four-cylinder petrol and a six-cylinder diesel. Customers also have a choice of two automatic transmission options. As for technical characteristics, then Hawal H9 2016 has good equipment, such as:

  • Two-liter sixteen-valve gasoline engine with turbocharging and a power of 218 horsepower. There are also models with a three-liter engine producing 330 hp. and also with turbocharging.
  • Six or eight speed automatic transmission.
  • Front independent and rear dependent suspension with disc brakes.
  • All-wheel drive with the ability to turn off.

Being equipped with such technical equipment, the HavalH9 SUV has the following fuel consumption:

  • In mixed mode, consumption is 12 liters per 100 kilometers.
  • In urban mode, consumption is 17 liters per 100 kilometers.
  • In highway mode, consumption is 9 liters per 100 kilometers.

Consumption is high for a passenger car, but quite acceptable for an SUV.

All-wheel drive and a locking rear differential allow you to travel off-road without much effort. And the suspension adaptation system allows you to operate the SUV in urban conditions without experiencing any discomfort.

Dimensions of the Chinese SUV:

  • Width 1926 mm.
  • Length 4856 mm.
  • Height 1910 mm.
  • Wheelbase 2800 mm.

The weight of the SUV is 2320 kilograms, such a large weight is compensated by powerful engines. This allows you to compensate for the costs of vehicle dynamics.

Safety is provided by two front airbags and side curtain airbags in case of a side impact. There is also ABS and an EBD system, which gives the SUV the ability to avoid skidding on slippery road surfaces.

Prices and configurations Haval H9 2015-2016

The SUV's equipment matches its price, which is $35,500 for the base version with a two-liter engine and a six-speed transmission. In addition to standard options, such as full power accessories, air conditioning and electric windows, which no longer surprise anyone, the following options deserve special attention:

  • Three-zone climate control.
  • GPS navigation system with eight-inch touch screen.
  • Vehicle stabilization system.
  • Light and rain sensors.
  • Electrically adjustable front seats.

The SUV can also be equipped with two spare wheels, which are located at the bottom of the trunk and on the outside, in a box on the rear door. If the buyer wishes, the SUV can be equipped with a winch, which will be placed on the front bumper.

It should be noted that by producing cars such as the HavalH9 SUV, Chinese automakers are trying to occupy a premium class niche in the car market. And at the moment they are doing a good job of it, given the quality and rich equipment of the cars they produce.

Haval H9 is a Chinese crossover that has become a kind of manifesto for the company to achieve a high competitive level. The car is worth the money, although the price may immediately seem a little high.

The H9's interior is spacious, with high-quality faux leather and aluminum trim. You can feel the atmosphere of unobtrusive chic, tranquility and well-being. With its power and solid appearance, the H9 commands respect on the road.

Model specifications

In motion, the H9 is reminiscent of American SUVs of the 90s - large rolls when cornering and a light steering wheel with ephemeral feedback, and most importantly - a very soft and smooth ride. Even on serious off-road conditions, the car's suspension withstands shocks with dignity. The Haval H9 is equipped with a 4-cylinder power unit with a volume of only 2 liters, but thanks to a twin-scroll turbocharger, the engine confidently produces a power of 218 hp.

Compared to predecessors of the same brand H9 impresses with power and features: direct injection, variable valve timing on intake/exhaust, two balancer shafts.

Haval H9 can be safely classified as an SUV thanks to its heavy body frame and durable rear suspension with a continuous axle. The rear and front overhangs are shortened, while the ground clearance reaches 206 mm - excellent for a car of this class.

The popular new generation Haval H9 SUV was presented in China in May of this year. The new generation car received a slightly tweaked appearance and significant changes in interior design, and the engine line was replenished with a new diesel engine.

Exterior design of Haval H9 in a new body

Externally, the SUV has changed slightly, but has become more masculine and modern. The car received a new radiator grille of an original shape with horizontal chrome bars. The shape of the SUV's front bumper has also been slightly changed.

We can say that the appearance of the SUV has become more original and recognizable compared to its predecessor.

The silhouette of the car body has retained its impressive dimensions and correct proportions. If you look at the body from the side, it is distinguished from the previous generation by new sill steps that hide while driving.

The footrests extend automatically when entering the vehicle. This update made it possible to slightly improve the aerodynamics and cross-country ability of the car. In the rear part of the body, changes affected only the shape of the bumper. He became more strict and concise.

Interior decoration of Haval H9 2017-2018 model year

In the interior of the new product, the changes are much more significant than in its external design. The car received an updated dashboard with a wide full-color on-board computer display. The central tunnel and gear selector knob have been completely updated, and the front panel has been slightly modernized, the central element of which is a wide touchscreen of the multimedia system.

Premium quality materials are used for interior decoration - genuine leather, aluminum, valuable wood. The overall dimensions of the SUV allow it to comfortably accommodate the driver and six passengers. The third row of seats is already present in the basic configuration of the SUV. Compared to the previous generation, the width of the middle row seat cushions has been increased by 5 cm for maximum seating comfort for passengers.

Technical characteristics of Great Wall Haval N9

The technical part of the frame all-wheel drive SUV has undergone major changes compared to its previous modification.

The basic four-cylinder petrol 2-liter engine of the car in the new generation received increased power (251 hp versus 218 in the previous generation). The second gasoline engine remains unchanged - a 3-liter turbocharged six with an output of 333 hp. The new version of the SUV also received a 2.0-liter diesel engine with a power of 190 hp.

The 6-speed automatic transmission has been replaced by a new hydromechanical 8-band automatic transmission.

As in the previous generation, the car has an independent suspension architecture with double wishbones in the front and a multi-link mechanism in the rear, but its settings have been slightly changed to create maximum comfort and controllability.
